Thick as Thieves

Rate this book
They say your life flashes before your eyes right before you die. Finnick Hollins might be finding that out the hard way. With a gun pointed at the back of his head, he retraces his life starting as a child running cons with his father and ending in a stranger's house with a dead body at his feet and the chilling feel of cold steel pressed to his skull.

"Never buy something you can steal. My father used to tell me that all the time."

Crime is truly a family affair for Finnick Hollins (NOT Phil Collins!) He was raised in a den of thieves; taught to con, cheat and steal from an early age, and boy, does he ever make his daddy proud.

Finn enjoys a life of leisure, taking, and sometimes borrowing, what he needs from neighbors...only if they're NOT home, of course. Groceries, clothing, DVDs are all his for the taking, and the owners never seem to miss a few cans of soda or a t-shirt or two. But Finn is destined for bigger scams and before long his capers are making the papers, and he's been assigned a really lame nickname.

This was a fun read and the only reason it gets four instead of five stars is because the main character/narrator's astonishing arrogance annoyed the hell out of me. (If I want to hear a story from someone who thinks they're better than everyone else, I'll phone up my mother-on-law...)

Fieldgrove provides detailed instructions for breaking and entering, lock picking and starting a car without keys. He also describes the framework of several cons. If you're tempted to try one, apparently Mormons are extra gullible. (There was even one a couple years ago who thought he could be President.)

"My dad said scamming Mormons was easier than falling off a log.
...they'd be wise to remove that extra M in Mormon."

A hilarious book that will capture your attention from the very start!! The first person point of view makes you wonder if Mr. Fieldgrove and Finnick might in fact be one and the same as far as personality goes! lol

Finnick and his father Alex are the ultimate old school con men. Con men with a code. Con men with ethics, if you will.... Not all con men have those standards!

When Finnick and his father have to face a problem that resurfaces from their past, he takes you back to where it all began. Conning people runs in his blood. A family trait that has been passed down for generations. At an early age Finnick pulls his own con while going door to door for a school fundraiser. From there his father starts to teach him the ropes. Showing Finnick that stealing isn't just about taking stuff, but about doing it wisely. Take your time, study your surroundings and get to know your mark. But if you're going to take on a partner, you better stick with family. Some people won't think like you and you could end up with a bullet through your skull!

Soon after finally finding a woman who holds his interest, one that he might actually be falling in love with, strange things begin to happen. Suddenly a detective is at their door, and Finnick feels like he is being watched. Can this relationship work out if he can't tell her who and what he really is? Or will the con man be the one who gets conned? (DUUUN DUN DUUUUUN)

This book was such a well written and funny story, that you really hope there will be more, turning this into a "must read" series! I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a laugh at every turn!!

I liked this book. Easy to read and follow. It starts off with a bang (pun intended)and it kept me interested to the very end. This is a work of fiction, but you could think it was an autobiography by the way it was written. Maybe this IS an autobiography and Mr. Fieldgrove pulled another con. This was a fun book to read.

The writing was pretty good. About 75% of the book I was annoyed at how self-centered and full of himself the main character was but if you don't mind that kind of character at all please read the book as the other 25% were pretty good. I liked the dialogues at the end and how the beginning and the end fit together.

I do think the story would have benefitted from summarising a lot of the earlier jobs the main characters describes and possibly fill in more of a back story or make this shorter in general. I can see this author writing great stories in the future though so I might give the books he's published after this one a try.

Funny, engaging characters, fast paced plot... What more could you ask for? Our anti-hero is witty and informative, and will have you cheering him on in his life of crime. I immediately started reading another one of the author's books. Highly recommended.

5 stars despite some complaints

Fun read. There are errors and rough spots but quite honestly it was a very fun read. I read the book in one session and that is something I never do. This is a unique book and this is so refreshing to me it earns the five stars.

Starts off in a refreshingly casual manner, then becomes more crass and bumbling as it goes on until the fairly predictable conclusion. It’s a decent airport read but it sounds like something I would have written in high school. I’m more than a bit flummoxed at its 4+ rating
