Whoever you are, wherever you are, and whatever your -experience has been with pornography, you can change. Whether this is your own struggle or the struggle of a family member, friend, or ward member, the Mighty One of Israel can make all things possible.
In a world ruled by the Internet and mass media, the adversary has refined a powerful and devastating pornography. Countless self-help books examine methods of overcoming pornographic addiction, but very few offer additional help for parents, spouses, and Church leaders seeking to support the addict who is struggling to conquer this desperate personal battle. Author G. Sheldon Martin draws upon his years of experience as a mental health counselor, teacher in the Church Education System, and bishop to help readers learn to identify and address addiction in a loved one. He shares ten practical tips that will help families and others gain strength and overcome this challenge,
Teaching and understanding sacred sexualityRemoving sources of pornographyLearning to do good and to serve God—not just to stop doing evilReinforcing the hope of forgiveness through the Atonement
This book is an uplifting and inspirational guide to navigating the thorny path of addiction—a loving reminder that no matter the individual or circumstance, pornography can be overcome. Through Christ, all things are possible.
Terrific resource on this important subject. Main takeaways: 1) People Can change, especially with the help of the Savior, the support of compassionate loved ones and, in some cases, the experience of professional counselors. 2) Telling someone with a pornography addiction to 'stop thinking about pornography' is less helpful than helping them find their own reasons to reject those thoughts and fill their minds with virtuous thoughts. When tempted by Satan at the end of His 40-day fast, Christ didn't pretend that He wasn't hungry, He explained the Reason that He wouldn't misuse His power to turn stones into bread. The reason, more than sheer willpower or denial of His feelings, was what empowered Him to overcome the temptation. Therefore, we must help those facing addiction to find and remember the reason that they want to change.
I read this book with the intent on becoming more informed about the addiction to pornography and then sharing some of what I learned with my family. There are great quotes from church leaders scattered throughout the book which I really liked, and at the end of each chapter are different applications geared toward spouses, parents and leaders. This book would be great for those struggling with addiction also.
