Rate this book

3.5 stars - While I think the connection between the MCs could have been stronger, I really liked the plot and world building in this one. It's cool to see how the other books tie into the investigation the FMC was trying to complete, and I am hoping the MMC's best friend is a future hero

These are always pretty fast and enjoyable, but this one fell a little flat for me.

Malaya and Kronos are matched up when she’s falsely accused of murder and trying to uncover corruption in a judge. Kronos runs a sector of the prison she’s sent to.

I did like the prison organization and how they felt very unique.

It made sense that the plot revolves mostly around the judge’s corruption since Malaya’s life depends on it, but to me, it was rushed and the romance wasn’t there.

They don’t have many moments of getting to know one another and I feel like we’re told more than shown how their feelings develop. We get some spice but to me it would’ve been better if we saw their emotional connection build and maybe if the events of the story took place over a longer period of time!

Regine Abel can worldbuild like Edward Elric can transmute

Easily and enthrallingly.

Here we are, 10 books later and she can still surprise me when it comes to creating a culture, original background and engaging plot.

This was easily my fave book of the series so far. I loved the complex and biased alien court system and the difficult legal and political battle Malaya found herself embroiled in. She had a razor sharp tongue when provoked, but a good heart. Kronos (did anyone else think of The Incredibles when reading his name?) was rigid and stuck up, but not purposefully cruel. They became a sort of power couple in their own right. Their romance progressed more rapidly than I was anticipating based on their meeting, but it worked for them.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: violence, death, gore, animal attack, envenomation, falsely imprisoned, murder, mentions of slavery and trafficking, vague references to torture, waking up partner to intimate touching without prior consent given, drug cartel

I love this series and was so excited to see the release of a new book!

After being set up and sentenced to a prison deadly planet by the corrupt judge she was investigating, Malaya is losing hope of her own survival until the PMA arranges a marriage between her and one if the prison's Wardens.

The Good
I love Abel's take on Incubus and how she made them into their own alien race with aspects taken from their lore but warped in a unique way. I like the idea of them feeding on all strong emotions while also being able to emit emotions to those around them. The world-building in this book was top tier and I loved it. Malaya's story was really interesting and I liked how it tied into the other stories in this universe.

The Bad
I think because I'm not interested in solving mysteries and investigations this story's plot didn't appeal to me like the other one's have. Not to say it wasn't interesting at all. The concept of a corrupt judge in a species know for its justice is cool especially paired with this prison system. But I just don't enjoy investigation mysteries and crime solving stories, especially when I am reading for the monster/alien romance aspect. I felt like the romance wasn't was developed as I would've liked.

Tropes:
— Marriage of Convenience
— Alien Romance
— Wrongfully Accused

Horn Level: 3/5🌶️
Format: Ebook

The Rating
I give this book a 3/5🌟 rating. I usually love these books but this one didn't move me as much. The alien politics are always an interesting and fun part of these books but it felt like it took over for the romance in this installment.

Meh, I wanted to give this series another try because I did really enjoy them in the beginning, but this is just not my thing. The way he is pissed his soulmate is a criminal and not trusting the empaths who say she is innocent, but once he sees her soul and can tell for himself she's innocent, he immediately becomes charming? A little ick.
Also the power dynamic is soooo out of whack. Now, boss-subordinate power differences are one thing-- still weird but we appreciate a boss who recognizes and tries to minimize the power imbalance-- but warden and inmate??? ehhh no good. ESPECIALLY when he's all "Give me reasons to want to keep you forever..." so at the end of 6-months he doesn't throw her in prison where he literally just said she wouldn't survive. Wow yeah... so romantic... this is totally the guy she has to f*ck later to consummate the marriage. Won't that be awkward as hell? Luckily for the heroine she is... reassured??? that he even married her which means there is a chance she *double checks the book* can stay married to her soulmate ergo not tossed into hell.

Besides the ick I'm getting, the rest is just kind of boring probably because I don't believe the plot-- problem, set up, or solution.
An entire population can see souls and yet no one has noticed the judge is corrupt as hell? Nevermind the fact no one has looked at the souls of all the innocent people he has sent to the hell prison... yeah... totally.

This was much more politically focused than the previous story I have read in the series. Our FMC is wrongly accused of murder and sentenced to the darkest Quadrant by a corrupted judge. As an investigative journalist, she has stumbled upon quite the sinister deeds undertaken by high ranking officials, but before she was able to expose them, she was caught in the clutches of the very villain himself.

When the Prime Mating Agency matches her with the dashing Obosian Hell Lord,Kronos, in an attempt to save her life, Malaya finds herself in an unexpected situation as her new husband is rather suspicious of her innocence.

I liked both characters, their marriage may not have started in the traditional sense as such, but they did work together to bring those corrupted individuals to justice. It was a bit disappointing that those wrongdoings were not exposed to the public, but considering the rigid hierarchical structure, I suppose it was inevitable. Change takes time and at least the Council was willing to work towards the greater good of the community.

Overall, this was lovely story to follow and I did enjoy Kronos and Malaya's journey of n their path to justice, freedom and of course, true happiness in the arms of each other.

The series overall is five stars for sure.
Alien looking aliens with alien genitals and powers, universe that feels populated, problems solved by communicating, consistent tech and politics. No overarching humans-as-lesser stuff. Mars Needs Women, but for beneficial galactic policy changes orchestrated by adorable bird people, not baby making.
These books (especially this one) can feel too short or rushed when you reach about 75%. They are quick reads but sometimes the major plotline is sacrificed on the altar of Make it Less Than Three Hundred Pages. The romance is never shortchanged. The problem with that is liking these characters so much you wouldn't mind the books being a little longer.

Could’ve been much better, everything felt pretty rushed and expedited. We didn’t spend enough time with the characters and the way the villains were handled was ridiculous, what is the point of you trying to have a case on him for this case to be handled by someone else off screen/page? It was pointless and rushed. I’m disappointed

This series is my guilty pleasure…

This series is my guilty pleasure, and the second a new addition comes out I always drop everything to read…

📔 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼: I Married an Incubus, part of the Prime Matinf Agency series by Regine Abel.

📚𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Sci-Fi romance, opposites attract, arranged marriage.

𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Malaya is wrongly convicted of a crime and sent to a prison planet, hurting her ability to continue her expose on a corrupt judge. The only thing keeping her out of the worst portion of the prison is marrying Kronos, an incubus with a hard line for honor who sees her as a convict before he reads her soul and finds out she’s much more.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: This series is always a good read. It’s the ultimate distraction… simple, quick and non-human.

Regine Abel is so good at writing these. I love the alien/human learning curve, the uniqueness of the worlds and the.. uh… alien anatomy. It’s all fun and swoony and makes you want to live in space.

🔮 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝗲: I’m not a huge sci-fi reader and I find them easy to understand. Very much like IPB.

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 3/5 ⭐⭐⭐

Original rating: 3 stars

3.5 ⭐️ Upon further deliberation this definitely constitutes a bump in the star rating (I really wish Goodreads allowed half star ratings 😭). 3.5 rating usually means that it was okay and didn’t really stand out, but I liked it nonetheless. While it wasn’t my favorite, it was definitely a book I enjoyed and could potentially reread sometime later in the future.

The fmc is Filipino, and it was really cool to see the emphasis on human wedding traditions from other cultures. I never knew about the importance of the dress and the actual difference in ceremony, so this was refreshing and interesting to read about. I also appreciated that the mmc was respectful of this even though he was skeptical about the fmc being a “criminal”.

The conflict of this book was pretty good, but I really wish we had more scenes of the MCs bonding more and learning more about each other’s thoughts. A lot of the actual bonding seemed to happen off page. Tbh the actual relationship between the characters was somewhat lacking and I really think this book could have been better had we seen at least a chapters worth of actual romance and affection between the characters.

I will say that the culture and world building that this author is able to do with each of these novels is honestly crazy to me. She has created a whole universe where everything is connected and actually makes sense. I’m in awe of their mind. Truly amazing.

I also really enjoyed that this book wasn’t insta lovey but the characters had really good chemistry. While I’m not someone that really puts emphasis on spice (after you’ve read so much of it, it tends to get repetitive and uninteresting), the smexy time between these two was very well done.

POPSUGAR READING CHALLENGE: A book where the main character is 42 years old

...I'm not quite sure what I just read. LOL. If you are new here hiiii my friend and I put together an entire list of random books based of the popsugar reading challenge prompts and then we randomly pick from the list using a number generator to buddy read!

I had no idea what was going on in this book ⚰️. It was a bunch of other worldly politics and names, with spice randomly in it....and that's bout it.

Yeah.
So.
All I'm going to say is at one point the main character goes "Blast it! I can't believe this." And that should be all the context yall need ⚰️⚰️⚰️.

With a title like "I Married An Incubus", I think it's fair to expect a LOT of smut, right?

______________

Well, Regine Abel went for a lot of PLOT instead, with a few scattered sex scenes here and there, but not as many as you'd expect. Since the plot was pretty good though, I'll let this slide; but, at the same time, I can't lie by not admitting that it feels an itty bitty bit like false advertising--just a little.

And, like other reviews have been saying, the hero and heroine just needed to spend more time together for their relationship to feel fully developed. Again, I didn't think the plot was boring, so it's not a bad direction, but it IS a little bit of misdirection.

Still sweet though, and I'm always up for Kayog's smugness at being right. Like, seriously, can this guy at one point just openly declare, "I have a 100% success rate"?

I seriously love this series. So glad it didn’t end with that Wonjin novella.
Not gonna lie. My favorite character is Kronos’ dad. He’s a sassy grump and I just love how he shows affection. Hilarious. And what Malaya said about how Kronos’ mom handles him…🫢🥹 Even funnier.

Just...eh I guess

Debated on rating, honestly. While, for the most part, I enjoy the series (outside of a few issues with a couple books), this one felt almost more like her novella add ons than its own book. And Kronos' behavior didn't make any sense. And the plot hole from Dryad was never addressed. We discover that Obosians have their own internal "cattle prod" energy. How did a shock collar work on him then? He could have zapped it right off! And what would the evil cats want from him to keep him captive? Nothing he did could be chemically reproduced as an exploited narcotic. It was never explained last book, never explained this book. In fact, his captivity is only mentioned 3 times, and only in connection to his wife's trials. Outside of a rescue scene, their wedding, and a handful of steam scenes Kronos has no real role outside his duties in this book. And Obosian society outside of Molvi is never really touched on. We don't learn much about them as a people. They all have the ability to "see souls" and yet an entire bad operation goes unchecked for decades? Too many plot holes, too little character interaction outside contrived steam scenes, his 1 ability is one I find distasteful as it basically could be used to exploit, and the whole of Molvi is contradictory: is it rehabilitation or punishment? And there's talk about not allowing cruelty but yet they completely condone it in the Q4 zones. There are a couple of books I really like from this series. This book is going to rank right down there with Beast I'm sad to say. Honestly, if half stars were a thing it'd only get 2.5. I'm not sure whether author is losing the spark or the series is just winding down, but between the pitiful additions of the novellas and 2-3 of the books, it's starting to lose luster.

Compared to the previous books in the series, this one is kinda disappointing. Like, there's not anything inherently bad about it. It just kinda sucked. That's all.

Malaya is a journalist who is accused of murder and shipped off to Molvi, the prison planet, because of the conspiracy of a corrupt judge. To get her out of this mess, our ultimate matchmaker, Kayog, does his magic again.

We already met Kronos in the Dryad's book in this series. He is that Obosian that got rescued from that slavery ring (he is the perfect demographic for a sex demon with electric power, btw).

Even then I had hunch that we'd get a book on the Obosians. And frankly, I was looking forward to it.

However, it fell short.

Malaya was not really the annoying heroine type as I have read way way worse (that literally gave me PTSD). But she seemed kinda dumb at times. And to be honest, her character was boring as fvck. Especially, in her last scene with the Conclave, she should've seen the final verdict coming from a mile away right? I mean, everyone is praising her "professionalism" and "competence" to the high heavens after all.

Kronos was a bit more interesting compared to her. But that was a low bar on the first place. His alienness is mostly what made him intriguing. Otherwise, he was a literal douchebag one moment and a simp the next.

The romance was also hella insta. Like, all the major shit went down within two days. And both already believed that they were soulmates. So I didn't really see any proper romantic plotline or chemistry here. Even the filler smut scenes in the Epilogue was giving trying-too-hard.

Honestly, I'm being generous and biased here by giving it 3 ⭐. Even the alien politics seemed a bit too much for my liking. I liked the previous books so so much and for that, I maybe a bit biased.

Overall, bingeworthy, I guess...
