Forsaken Dreamscape

Rate this book
Forsaken Dreamscape is the second book in Lani Lenore’s Nevermor trilogy, a dark fantasy based on the legend of Peter Pan.

Four years have passed since Wren left Nevermor – since Rifter promised that he wouldn’t forget her. Now 19, Wren is shut away in an asylum, accused of madness and of murders she didn’t commit. When Rifter finally comes for her, it is not a moment too soon, and in her absence, Nevermor has changed. Under a cloud of mysterious darkness, the land has died.

At Rifter's request, Wren sets out across the broken world to gather the Wolf Pack, now separated, so that they might take back the land that is rightfully theirs. Out of love and trust, Wren agrees, but she finds out quickly that things are not all as they seem, and everyone has a different story to tell.

Lani Lenore is a writer of gothic horror and dark fantasy. In addition to rewriting well-known fairy tales with a twist, she also writes original stories in a style she calls ‘dark fairy tale’, which uses fantasy elements to build horror stories. Most of her tales, though horrific at times, have a subplot of romance. She loves to keep readers on the edge of their seat and immerse them in worlds of beauty and terror.

Lani currently lives in Tennessee with her husband, two dogs, and four cats.

Mini Review: OK, WHAT WAS THIS BOOK???? That mind bending plot twist just blew me away, mostly because I did not predict that AT ALL. God, I love Lani Lenore and this book, despite the fact that it drove me crazy. The world of Nevermor was darker like she promised, the characters had grown tremendously and the writing remained beautiful and flawless.

Anyways, I loved this book much much much more than the first one (and I gave the first book 5 stars, which speaks volume about my love for this series). I would also like to add that it was these books that have finally rekindled my interest in reading YA fantasy again after getting tired of the genre a while ago. Also, Lani Lenore remains my indie publishing hero, who made me realized that I don't have to sit and wait around agents to reject my books and I can achieve my dreams with little more boldness and courage.

All in all, I think its a very underrated series, that was written beautifully. Lani Lenore definitely deserves MUCH more attention than this. I hope you guys check out these books, they are awesome!

This is one of my favorite books of all time. The plot, the pacing of the relationships, the relational tension and the atmosphere are all immaculately executed. It's the kind of book you want to read again immediately after finishing to find all the hints and signs you missed the first time through.

It's not without its faults. The beginning is slow and the story/writing doesn't feel truly locked-in until about 20%. And the cover makes it look like a middle-grade novel. But don't be fooled, this book is dark.

It's been years since she returned from Nevermor, and Wren is now in a mental institute because of a crime she didn't commit, but cannot prove her innocence. She's nearly lost all hope before, all at once, a mysterious figure comes for her.
When at last she makes it back to Nevermor, she finds it utterly changed— the land is sick and dying... and, even more shocking: The Rifter has grown up.

The Rifter has lost his Wolf Pack's loyalty, and he needs Wren to travel its desolate lands and convince the now scattered Wolf Pack to return to him in order to help heal the land. What caused them to scatter? Why has it been years since Rifter came for her, when he promised to come sooner? Why is the land dying? Wren has to piece together the truth for herself on her dangerous journey.

I'm a sucker for both the Unlikely Allies and Enemies-To-Friends/Lovers tropes, and this is one of my absolute favorite executions of them. In Nevermor, Nix was the thorn in Wren's side. But Forsaken Dreamscape sees them forced together as they seek to unite the Wolf Pack and attempt to find truth in a hostile, untrusting land.

Our Wolf Pack is back, but, like the land, they are very changed. We get to the heart of each of them more than in the first installment, and each character is wonderful. Nix. Finn. Toss. SLY. And Wren finds she is the glue that holds them all together in a tenuous alliance— their allegiance now belonging to her, no longer to the Rifter.

I revisit this series every couple of years at least— and always love it just as much as I did the first time. <3

So I finished Forsaken Dreamscape!

Forsaken Dreamscape is the second book in the Nevermor trilogy. If I was to describe this series, I would call it a dark Young Adult adaptation of Peter Pan. I really enjoyed this addition to the series. I think the concept behind this book was fantastic! As a fan of the original Peter Pan story, it’s amazing to me that I’ve never envisioned what would happen if Neverland/Nevermor somehow became a corrupted and sinister place….but Lani Lenore did. And frankly, I think it’s a genius idea!

In the beginning of the book, we learn that it has been four years since Wren left Nevermor and we also learn that she has committed to a mental hospital after being wrongly accused of a horrible crime. From there Forsaken Dreamscape jumps right into things and just keeps going! Nevermor is no longer the same land that it was back when we first encountered it. It has become a desolate wasteland of sorts that has mutated into some kind of nightmare world…and those that live there have begun to change with it.

In short, I envisioned it like this: If Neverland and Nightmare on Elm Street had a baby. That baby would be the creepy version of Nevermor.

This book definitely has a more serious tone than the first one. I feel like since there was SO MUCH going on in this book/so much that was “revealed” towards the end, I’m probably going to go back and reread it again just to be sure that I’ve fully grasped what occurred/happened in this story - especially now that I know how it ends. It was quite a mindf*** to be honest.

5 stars! I thought it was very unique and enjoyable addition to the series. I’m only sorry that I’m going to have to wait to find out what happens in the final book!

P.S.- This book would make a fantastic graphic novel! Just saying.

After that lovely cliff hanger in book one, I couldn't wait to lose myself in Nevermor again!

I absolutely loved how this second installment in the Nevermor trilogy started out. We get to delve a bit deeper into Wren's character and world.

And yes, she is less a hero and more a damsel-in-distress, but I actually enjoy that. It's refreshing as most YA female leads are all becoming unoriginal to me. I understand the underlying message of "girl power!", but to me it's unrelatable. And I feel there's no shame in feeling complacent to be as a "stereotypical woman" ( I, myself am very happy in that role currently).

What I'm saying is, I feel like every (fantasy) book I've read has a young female lead who hits up her castle guards to train her to fight, I then endure chapter after chapter of drull said training, she takes on a big brute of a guard (i.e.: 200lb, 6ft tall man vs adolescent girl) bests him *eye roll* and then becomes some lethal badass killing machine. Um okay. That's cool and all.....................

It is. It's cool. Redundant. But I get it.

Wow. Anyway....back to Forsaken Dreamscape. While trying not to spout any spoilers....The plot here definitely held my attention just as well as in book one.

I found it to be an unpredictable ride. With a nice plot twist or two that had me like, "No shite!" I also enjoyed the advancement & changes of the characters' personalities as well as relationships as appropriate to the story line.

My favourite quote from this book: "Let there be chaos". And I shall say no more there.

At the end, we are left with another lovely (not sarcasm there) cliffhanger, in which compels you to put it down and meditate there for bit. For a night perhaps. Mull over it whilst you wait for sleep to come (all positive here). And then immediately start the last installment the next night!

I like read right before bed, you see, in hopes that my dreams should be greatly influenced. This has worked well for me, as I dreamt of Neverland whilst reading this series. And it was amazing.

Again, do yourself a favour and give this a go. I am greatly enjoying Lani Lenore's writing style and character development. And upon finishing this brilliant trilogy, I am in great anticipation of discovering her other works!

No one reads Lani Lenore’s books and I don’t know why.

The thing is, she is self-published without publicity but her cover artist is great and the stories are too so I don’t get it. Does no one ever bother recommending these books to their friends?

Forsaken Dreamscapes is the sequel to Lenore’s first Peter Pan- inspired novel, Nevermor. I loved Nevermor, so expectations where HIGH.

The time skip from book 1 to book 2 really helped the plot in this one, as we see the characters, four years older and wiser, with more experience on their backs.

I loved it! I can’t really say much because it would all be a spoiler, there were so many twists and turns.

Personally Lenore’s rendering of the Peter Pan story and characters are the most life like I have seen. Many adaptions and retelling shy away from the brutality of the source material and fall short. Forsaken Dreamscapes is a lot darker than its predecessor and creates a very dense world to step into. Once I was past the first 25%, I read the rest in one sitting even though I should have been sleeping.

I think the character development was very believable in this one, as well. I already have the third volume so I will start reading as soon as I can.

It's been about a year since I read the first book in the Nevermor trilogy so going into this second part, my facts were a little fuzzy. But, that certainly did not stop me from thoroughly enjoying this second book. I had read this book in its original fan fiction form about two or three times already. However, after having already fallen in love with the way Lani Lenore formed each individual character coupled with the beautiful world she created in the first book, Forsaken Dreamscape suddenly took on much more depth than it had as simply a fan fiction of Peter Pan.

Nevermor was a land of beauty, adventure, and dreams in the first book and now, four years later, Wren returns to find it has become a darkened, corrupted place of nightmares. It's a place where she can't trust anyone not even Rifter for whom she still has strong feelings. Although this book is definitely a lot darker than the first book, there was so much excitement, twists, and thrill that it was most definitely hard to put down.

My favorite part of this book was the characters. A lot of books that I've read recently have characters that are similar to one and other and don't have distinct voices. However, in Forsaken Dreamscape, each character has their own unique personality and voice that separates them from each other and I love how they interact together. Every character is fleshed out as individuals so well, each with their own story and agenda that by the time you've reached the end of the book, they've all poked their way one by one into your heart and settled in for the long run.

I really, truly cannot wait for the last book of the trilogy Spoilerespecially after that cliffhanger ending. In the meantime, I definitely intend on purchasing physical copies of both these books to add to my shelves (and reread a bunch of times). Why is 2015 so far away?!

5/5 stars (and well deserved!)

this book definitely met each of my expectations and totally exceeded them. if you know me, you know how picky i am while reading peter pan related stories. i was surprised enough when i ended up loving nevermor. how could i think i would end loving forsaken dreamscape even more?

everything is darker than in the first book, but still respecting so well the characters and the spirit of this fantastic world. you will follow wren in her mission to retrieve the wolf pack all over nevermor, in an incredible journey throughout this dark world. and let me tell you, you're in for a ride! everything you think you know will be changed times and times again the more you read the book. lenore really wrote it well, in a way that you get as surprised as the characters themselves during plot twists that should have been obvious for the reader. and i adored it! the pages just fly by themselves and you can't but want more and more.

i'd definitely recommend this trilogy to anyone that likes a dark retelling! you definitely don't have to read the original peter pan to read that one, but if you did, you will enjoy it even more!

If I should choose which book is my favorite, I would choose Forsaken Dreamscape!

I also love Nevermore and Shadow Sun, but I felt more thrill from the plot and twist in Forsaken Dreamscape. I wasn't expected about Rifter especially from the first moment I read until he finally gave a cue.

Overall, it's a great story! I could imagine how Nevermor would be like whether before or after the place was collapsed by the darkness. I really hope this trilogy could be made into movies :D

REREAD IN DECEMBER 2015 FOR SHADOW SUN.

5 stars. Always. This sequel is full of action, mind-blows, darkness, friendship and love. I hold my breath from the first page to the last. Rifter and Wren...I will go down with this ship. Seriously. (PETER AND WENDY FOR LIFE.)
This trilogy needs more recognition, but at the same time, its my baby so...MINE. MINE. MINE.
