All right folks, I, apparently, am the first on GR to review this book here. That is a little fun.
As a Scandinavian, Norse myths have always interested me.

I quite adored this book. It was cohesive to the tale prior, and I liked that. Some books like these are all over the place and I did not get that feeling while reading it.

It gave me a sense of reading fairytales.
It was very easy to get into, it held beautiful illustrations, and the writing was a bit larger than regular.
All of the above made it very enjoyable, and super quick to finish.
It only covers some of the very large and wellknown myths, so if you expect a full rundown on the mythology this is not it.
However it is a stunning book, it is educating, and interesting, and quite frankly a wonderful little read. It is a very good book for "beginners". If you find yourself intrigued by myths & mythology but feel overwhelmed with the whole "textbook feeling" this book is a good choice.

A spectacular introduction to Norse Mythology. Shallow as I may be, it was the encasement of the book in it’s finery that had me dying to see what was inside, and it did not disappoint. I have attempted mythological books before but this was the first one I finished. The storytelling was effective in not reading as non-fiction. Nor was it dry. The stories were to the point but told in fairytale/folklore language making it informative and easy to read.

The set of characters were interesting, although for a short-ish book, the character development did not go too far beyond primary motivations (heroic, scamp-y). The gods were kind and to a degree had the best interests of the world in mind, so long as they could live in their magical home in the sky. Having said that, they did have slaves, such as the dwarves, who would weld/fabricate/make (I lose masculinity points now) enchanted weapons, like Thor’s hammer. As usual, I couldn’t help but side with the villains: the giants. So they tricked the gods and ridiculed them a few times, but so did they. At the end of the day, mythology doesn’t need to make sense, and I just went with it, and the ride was fun.

Rating justification: interesting topic, well-selected stories, great imagery, and a star down for some of the repetitive style of writing.

This was an acceptable introduction to Norse mythology but I was frustrated by some portrayals of some gods such as Odin (only being viewed in a positive light) and Loki (only being portrayed as evil or bad).

The story that frustrated me the most was the retelling of Sif’s hair getting cut by Loki.

I wish it had more details and deeper explanations for the characters, what each story meant, and where they came from originally. But I enjoyed this book nonetheless!

Está bien. Había leído anteriormente el de Neil Gaiman hace bastante tiempo y ese me parece mejor. Mitos nórdicos.

Pd: la estética del libro 5 estrellas.
