In the kingdom of Kōsaten, the poor live by the mantra of “pair or perish.” Outsider Macella should already be scraping to feed a family of her own, doing her part to keep the societal structure intact. Done with adhering to archaic expectations, Macella sets out on her own. Armed only with words and a thirst for change, she faces a perilous world, one where the veil between the mortal realm and that of gods and demons grows thinner every day.In her pursuit of the stories she knows can incite a renaissance, Macella takes what work she can. But everything changes when, on her first night of brothel work, an Aegis—one of the kingdom’s sworn protectors—requests her company. Aegises are known to be emotionless brutes, no better than the monsters they kill. But despite her fear, Macella is entranced by Aithan of Auburndale. When Aithan begrudgingly allows her to travel with him, Macella convinces herself that their companionship is one of convenience, and that there is no deeper, more dangerous desire involved. But being around the Aegis is changing her. The voices in her head are no longer characters from her stories, but something far more real and infinitely more sinister. And she’s not the only thing changing—monsters are entering the realm more freely, attacking more strategically. Something terrible is coming.Yet Macella cannot walk away. Not when the world needs her—and Aithan does, too. Not when she finds herself wanting her story…to include him.
A.J. grew up voraciously reading her grandmother’s Harlequin romance novels alongside Madeline L’Engle and R.L. Stine. She has remained an avid reader, whose book choices are as eclectic as her personality. As an anxious, Black, chaotic bisexual, A.J. Shirley writes spicy fantasy romance that is unapologetically inclusive.
Sugar, spice, and everything.. spice. Whew! What a ride this book has been!
Where do I start? This book checked off all the boxes. I just spent the last few nights reading until my eyes couldn't soak in any more words.
I feel as though it had the right balance of plot, action, and spice [and oh my, the spice was good!] It moved at a steady pace. There was never a moment where I felt my mind wandering away from the story. This is absolutely a must-read for anyone who already enjoys, or is looking to explore, Romantasy w/ spice.
Mark you calenders for February 12th when this book is set to release!
You have no idea how grateful I am that I signed up for this ARC. To say that I absolutely loved it would be an understatement. If you are a fan of The Witcher,as I am,you will really enjoy this book. The world building, the action, the plots are absolutely amazing. The relationship development between the main characters,Marcella and Aithan, and their growth throughout the book is remarkable and heartwarming.
I can honestly say that this has been the easiest 5 star review that I have made this year.
Thank you to @ajshirleyauthor for the opportunity to read this book.Head over to her page to pre-order A Saga of Shields and Shadows which will release on 12/02/2024.
Oh,before I go,have I mentioned that this book is quite spicy? The good quality,spicy 😏 You’re welcome ♥️
This book is perfect if you’re a fan of the Witcher! It also had great LGBTQ+ rep and was very action packed! My qualm is that I felt there could have been more flesh to the characters to allow us to connect to them more, they felt very one dimensional at times but otherwise, a solid read if you want some fantasy and spice!
Amazing storytelling. So engaging. Hooks you from the beginning and keeps you reading into the wee hours. And the spice is very, VERY nice! Looking forward to reading many more stories from AJ Shirley.
Thanks to the author for sending me an ARC copy of this book ❤️
This book is very spicy, and I can see people who enjoyed the witcher but also were hoping for more smut scenes enjoying this. For me personally, the story progressed a bit too fast at the start, and I wish we could explore the characters more before things started happening, but that's just about my preference.
Definitely pick this up if you're looking for smut, grumpy x sunshine and adventurers kind of tropes ✨
Macella is a poor young woman who has never known love. Her family, with numerous children they could barely keep fed, mostly just finds her a bit of a burden. Struggling to find work, she accepts a job in a brothel as a sex worker as she seeks her Fate. There, she meets Aithen, an Aegis — one of the kingdom's sworn but ostracized protectors from monsters. Aegises are perceived as emotionless brutes, akin to the monsters they combat, and avoid romantic entanglements. The two decide that they had enough fun to travel together for a while with no strings attached.
The two travel together: fighting monsters, saving towns, and falling in love. The two fall in love quickly and their relationship blooms into something so healthy and perfect, it was lovely to read. I typically like slow-burns, but this allowed for a more complex and natural feeling relationship as they grow together. They accept one another and they're not afraid to be vulnerable. It's just beautiful and healthy and accepting. The author's acceptance and inclusion really shines through in this book.
The entire thing just made me outrageously just... content. Meanwhile, this has so much smut - like chapter one and then sprinkled throughout - but it's all pretty short scenes so it doesn't take away from the plot. It was pretty perfect, actually. And there's a friend that joins them at one point, which is also beautifully written. There is also wonderful world-building, a great story, and I am eagerly anticipating the next book.
TL;DR: Do you like The Witcher? How about an emotionally available Geralt paired with a Jaskier-type scribe who is a black, bisexual woman? Yep, thought so. Then, read this. It is truly something special.
Thanks to the author for the advanced copy. This is my honest opinion.
Tropes and Features: 🛡️ Romantasy with LOTS of 🌶️🔥 🛡️ 3 some 😏 🛡️ Found Family 🛡️ Gods, monsters, prophecy 😈 🛡️ Fated mates ❤️🔥 🛡️ Touch her and 💀 🛡️ Queer and BIPOC rep!! 🏳️🌈✊🏿 🛡️ He falls first (and fast) 🛡️ Mythology from around the world 🌍
Where do I even begin. This book has shown me how much I enjoy reading romantic fantasy. The story telling is amazing. The spice is spicy. It’s the best of both worlds. Macella is a young girl trying to figure out her fate. Aithan is an Aegis trying to protect the kingdom. The rollercoaster of events we go through while reading this is something else. I didn’t want to put this book down. Every word pulled me in further and further. I could feel Macella and Aithens emotions and love towards each other with every word Shirley wrote. I highly recommend this book if you’re wanting something that has thrill, secrets, and spice
This book is truly special. I jumped at the chance for a ARC mostly because of the author's wonderfully spicy quotes on IG, and yet this story has SO MUCH MORE than just hawt seggs to recommend it. Think The Witcher, but replace the bard with a badass heroine who’s at least ten times more interesting. There’s also spice (that threesome scene!), inclusive and intriguing worldbuilding, gorgeous prose, not to mention characters that are refreshingly mature in a way that made me never want to read YA again (no offense, YA, but also, I’m so tired of angsty jealousy/pettiness and there was absolutely ZERO of that here, hallelujah). Macella was a wonderfully complex and fleshed-out protagonist, and I found her particular blend of kindheartedness and badassery to be unique and compelling. Aithan was both sweet and hot AF. Even hotter was the sheer amount of love and respect these two had for one another—big shout out to the author, AJ, for writing a relationship that is actual, real-world #goals. We so rarely get that in fiction. Basically, I loved everything about this book and highly recommend it, can’t wait for the next one!
The world building, original characters, and storyline were beyond what I expected when going into this book. The steamy chemistry between MMC and FMC, including adventures, animosity, and stories told, had my heart pounding with each word.
I love Fantasy because you can get lost in this incredible world the author creates, but this time, it was the characters I truly got lost in. I shed tears. Goosebumps were raised, and audible gasps from different twists and turns.
This is a book that will be a top recommendation for years to come.
This book was amazing! Think the Witcher but more focus on the romance.
Wonderful world-building and complex characters! I was hooked from the beginning! This story is action-packed, with both kinds of action (if you know what I mean...). There was a few moments I even gasped out loud!
I was a little afraid of the cliches at the beginning of the book but I love that it went a completely different direction! I like to be surprised when reading and this one kept me guessing!
The romance was really refreshing to read. There wasn't any annoying fantasy miscommunication or jealousy. Just mutual respect, fluidity, and growth! And a good amount of spice! I love the way Macella and Aithan interacted from the beginning. Macella was so sure of herself to start and that isn't sacrificed in the name of love/romance.
I also really appreciated that this book ended with readers wondering what is going to happen next but not a crazy cliffhanger. I am certainly excited to see how the story develops in the sequel!
If you are looking for a grown-up romantasy this is it!
overall based on the fact i did really enjoy this it gets 4 stars. it took me a bit to get through it but once i got to the political intrigue i couldn’t put it down.
i like the attraction and the fated mates idea between Aithan and Macella and I love seeing them both come into their own.
There were a few instances I did feel like things went too fast and a few spots where I felt like the pace was a little slow but i’m interested to see where the series goes and how our lovers will get themselves and the crown out of the pickle they’ve found themselves in.
if you’re a fan of the witcher, asoiaf and wheel of time, definitely give this a go!
4.5/5! What a story so far! Oh my, I was thoroughly captivated by the story. Talk about SPICE!!! The ending makes me want to immediately jump into the next book!
A Saga of Shields and Shadows made my heart race and body tingle in all the right places. Just wait for the bisexual threesome. I got lost in the action, suspense, smut, and romance. The characters were lovable and likable, and I was rooting for their success and happiness. The fantasy took me to another world, and the storyline kept me on my toes and held my interest, and I don’t like reading! I’m so happy I picked up this book. It was the perfect escape. It consumes way too much of my headspace since reading it. It’s a book that’ll stay with you.
*ARC READER REVIEW* OMFG!!!! This is one of the best fantasies I’ve read in a long time! Seriously, A.J you out done yourself and gave us a excellent book with everything we wanted… hot characters, really good spice, powers, fight, royalty and so on! I really loved this one and hope a lot more people read it because they will love it! This need to go viral now! I was ARC reader and thank you so much to give me the opportunity for that! I just want to read the following book! So excited ❤️❤️⭐️
A Saga of Shields and Shadows throws you headfirst into a thrilling, spice-filled adventure from the very first pages. The storytelling keeps you turning the page, and the second half truly delivers with the action.
At the beginning, I wish there was more character development for Macella and Aithan but as the story continues, I see why it was important to wait. I PROMISE you will see the development not only in their relationship but also in their personal stories. While the initial whirlwind romance might not be for everyone who enjoys a slow burn, the character development unfolds organically throughout the story.
The story starts with a bang and maintains a thrilling momentum, reminiscent of action-packed fantasy series like The Witcher or that of a DnD campaign. The second part delves deeper into the central conflict, offering a satisfying payoff.
Be prepared for some steamy scenes, particularly in the first half (🌶🌶🌶🌶!).
The groundwork laid in A Saga of Shields and Shadows promises an exciting and well-developed world for future installments. Like omg the ending!!!!!!
Overall, this is a thoroughly enjoyable read for those who crave a fast-paced adventure with a lot a bit of spice. With a captivating world and well-defined stakes, this debut promises an exciting series to come. Readers who appreciate a slower burn for character development might want to consider this a heads-up before diving in. I, for one, am so ready for book two!
Love, love, loved this debut romantasy novel by AJ Shirley! I already can’t wait to read the sequel so the author better get to writing. 👀
Tbh, I’m not a huge fantasy reader so I was nervous that the lore would be hard for my decision-fatigued brain to absorb. However, I found that the pacing of the reveals of the lore and world-building was perfect for me. It was complex enough to keep me guessing but I didn’t need to check the glossary or re-read passages to understand what was going on.
Now romance novels, that’s my jam and this was a very satisfying read for my hopeless romantic self. Great spice, lots of quotable lines to make your heart flutter, and a compelling narrative with a hot, bisexual main character! The spice 🌶️🥵 my word, was satisfying, creative, and swoon-worthy.
Truly, this book is so much more than a combo of the fantasy and romance novel. It’s a story of brutal traditions built for survival and sustained by the elite, healing generational trauma, and storytelling as a powerful weapon to change the world. This book touched my heart. I look forward to reading more about the adventures and fates of Macella and Aithan.
Note: This is a voluntary review left of an ARC. 💜
first of all, i would like to thank A.J. Shirley for giving me the opportunity to read this book. i feel so grateful to be on your arc team. 🫶🏻
secondly, i’ve been looking for a good romantasy book to read (yes 2024 is my romantasy era) and i finally found it. 🥹
it took me a little while to get into this book but once i did i was completely immersed in the fantastic world this author has created for us. the pace was perfect and engaging. the plot twists and turns kept me glued to this story.
the characters were also amazing. our fmc, macella is a fierce, smart, and brave woman. i adored her so much. just like macella, i fell head over heels for aithan. he’s SO sweet and protective of her. 🥹 ughh their chemistry was literally off the charts !! fated mates is one of my tropes ever and it’s done perfectly here.
i can’t wait to see what happens next. LIKE GIVE ME THE SECOND BOOK RIGHT NOW. LOL. just kidding, i love you A.J. Shirley!!! i will be waiting here patiently for the second book.
i would absolutely recommend this book to every romantasy reader out there. go read this book and thank me later ✨
This book was sent to me as an ARC by AJ Shirley so I can give my honest opinion and share a review.
The book at first got me a little confused, it seemed simple, almost insta love, and I thought the main characters were ready to walk to the sunset together and finish the story, but as you follow through their journey, the plot becomes more robust and slowly introduces the obstacles that the MCs need to face together.
I loved that the love and trust between the MCs is undisputed and is the base of the plot. They are stronger together as they are apart. The side characters starts to matter towards the second half of the book and they’re instrumental to the development of the plot.
AJ wrote an inclusive story with characters from all shapes and sizes. Even the mythology is a blend of representation from different cultures that one don’t see often portrait in romantady books.
This was the perfect first book of a saga, introductory to what will definitely be an action packed sequel.
I was completely engrossed in the world of "A Saga of Shields and Shadows " from start to finish.
The intricate societal structure of Kōsaten, the mysterious Aegis, and the looming threat of monsters kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book.
Macella is a strong, determined protagonist who defies expectations and fights for change in a world that is resistant to it.
The dynamic between Macella and Aithan was both captivating and complex. Their relationship evolved in a way that felt natural and organic, adding an emotional depth to the story that I appreciated.
The blend of romance, action, and supernatural elements made for a compelling read.
The writing was beautifully descriptive, painting a vivid picture of the kingdom of Kōsaten and the dangers lurking within it.
The pacing was perfect, with plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing until the very end. Can’t wait for the second installment of this series!
I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a thrilling and thought-provoking read.
I love LOve LOVE this book and the fantasy world created by A.J. Shirley!!!!!!! This is the perfect blend between fantasy, action, suspense, romance, hot adult scenes 🌶🌶🌶🌶 and an adventure of self-discovery. I love the diversity of representation in the characters; as well as how the story keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what’s going to happen next.
From the moment you meet Macella you’re instantly drawn to her story and rooting for her success. The chemistry between Macella and Aithan just oozes from the pages, and I’d be lying if I said I haven’t had a daydream or two about reenacting some of those skills displayed in those scenes 😏.
A.J Shirley has a way of keeping the reader engaged while constantly wanting more. This is a must read page turner and I’m so excited there’s more books to come!!!!!!!!
I received this book as an ARC. Thank you to A J and her team.
I absolutely loved this book. Aithan and Macella are so fantastic together. Without giving too much away…
Macella meets Aithan in a brothel. They’re instantly fascinated by each other. Aithan takes a chance on taking Macella with him. Aithan is magical, gorgeous, and strong. And…
He falls first. Don’t you just love when that happens?
Macella is an incredible character. She’s smart, creative, and willing to do whatever it takes to make Aithan’s life, and the world in which they live, better.
The writing in this book is remarkable. I couldn’t put it down, constantly desperate to know what happens next.
If you like strong, intelligent FMCs, mystical / magical happenings, and a hot guy that knows how to hold his… sword, then you must read THIS BOOK!
I DNF'ed the book about half-way through, which says a lot: it's not bad, just really not worth any more of my time. The story doesn't make sense, everything is just basted and not actually stitched into a fabric (Example: )
The sentences are often short and choppy, and so is the general style of the writing. It gives an impression of a well-edited draft, not an actual book ready to be published

Review: GIVE ME ALL THE WITCHED VIBES BECAUSE IM HERE FOR IT!! Loved this book, the adventure, the intrigue, the storyline, the spice. 🥵🌶️ I love that Aithan is an aegis that named his horse Cinnamon lol. Marcella is a SMART FMC, is calculating before she jumps head first into any situation. Loved the scene with Shelby, Aithan & Marcella!
If you're into "The Witcher" and all that magical, action-packed world vibes, you've got to check out this book by A.J. Shirley.
And get this, it has some really cool BIPOC rep🏳️🌈
The writing is top-notch. Shirley has a way with words that isn't just about telling a story; it's about making you live in it.
It starts off fast, like super fast. But then it settles into this cozy, fantasy romance vibe that's just chef's kiss. It's all about the journey, seeing these characters grow and learn about each other in the most magical way.
This was fun!! I thought the characters were intriguing, their development was great, the story was gripping, only downside is having to wait till October for the second book! I kind of wish it was longer but what we got was awesome and it didn’t feel rushed. The world building wasn’t too much, just the perfect amount to keep the imagery going in your head. I loved the fmc and mmc’s relationship and the building toward it! Almost a cozy spicy fantasy with a hint of The Witcher vibes!!
I wish that I never had to put this book down. It is incredibly fast paced and easy to follow while also being intricate and immensely engaging. Between the world building, the mythological monsters, the romance and the secrets that are revealed, there is not a dull moment. The relationship between the main characters is such a pleasure to read about. It’s a fast burn romance and surprisingly sweet and mature, no dancing around each other or miscommunications! A Saga of Shields and Shadows is truly unlike anything else I’ve read. I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2!
*ARC READER* 3.5 ⭐️ wow. This book reminds me of the Witcher (i’ve never read the book. this statement is solely based on the tv show).LOTS OF SPICE. TONS AND TON OF SPICE. i found the story and plot very entertaining. the wording/phrasing/verbiage was awkward in some places, and at times the pace felt choppy but it was still good!! Very entertaining and good for a debut novel!!! And what a surprise at the end! Can’t wait for A Saga of Sovereigns and Secrets!!!!
When I say wow 🤩. The book starts off with a scene of spice that blew my mind. I was immediately drawn in. The story was character driven with action, intrigue, the love of a developing relationship. Oh and did I mention spice? I loved it so much I ordered a copy for my husband and my best friend, because I don’t share my books that I know I will read and reread. I NEED the second book!!
I was so glad I quickly signed up to get the ARC of this book, it actually blew me away, I fell in love with this book!
I’m a huge fan of fantasy and the moment I heard about this book I knew I had to read it, I was so drawn in I was able to read the whole book in a day, I highly recommend to anyone who’s in love with fantasy, mythology this is the book for you!
