Laura Catherine is an indie fantasy author, specialising in cozy fantasy and YA fantasy with queer representation.
They are a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, an ADHD disaster, and hail from Melbourne, Australia. When they are not writing, Laura can be found raising two beautiful children with their partner, spending time outdoors camping, and snuggled up with their cats on the couch with a good book.
First off, I was a beta reader for Laura, whom I met at a writing course, and this is her debut novel, Djinn. Kyra is a girl on the run with her father. Who they're running from, she doesn't know. So when the pursuers finally catch up and kidnap Kyra, she learns that everything is not as it seems. Her world is about to change big time, because she's a genie, and not everyone is happy about her return. But with her mysterious and dreamy trainer, Will, Kyra will have to find a way to adjust to her new life, because no one is coming to save her.
I love Kyra's strength as a main character. Her life is by no means easy, even after she discovers she's a genie with super powers. This is a fast paced, easy read, with equal parts action, romance and world building. There is a strong cast of supporting characters, each with their own flaws and secrets, and a very strong/lusty love plot.
Fans of Amanda Hocking's Switched series will find Djinn an interesting Young Adult Paranormal Romance along the same lines, that doesn't exactly follow a mainstream path of including vampires, angels, faeries and so on. And that in itself is refreshing for this genre. Djinn is also the first book in a series, and because of this there will be plenty of unanswered questions lingering in your mind, long after you put the book down.
Djinn is a story of mystery and intrigue, it's a story of adapting and changing, and of finding love. There is much left to learn and quite frankly, I need to read Blooders now!
This book was the most wonderfully written story I have had the pleasure of reading so far so thank you very much for the chance to read this wonderful book the characters and story line was a truly wonderful get away and loved ever minute of this book as you can see the book was so very hard to put down once I started to read it I couldn't stop so now I would love to know when the next book is coming out and also my thanks go to the author Laura and most say you go girl and keep them coming and keep smiling and happy reading tou all with love from wee me
A teen shouldn't have to live a life on the run, with constant moves and training in self-defense. Kyra and her father have always lived this way, and though she resents it, it is what she knows. But everything she knows shatters when a boy named Will and his team of supernaturally-powered friends kidnaps her and takes her to the community of the Djinn. She learns her true past as a noble daughter of the Djinn, a magical people with fantastic powers, and she discovers the true identity of the man she thought of as her father. Can she rearrange her whole perspective of reality to fit in to the place they say she belongs? Can she adopt their strange culture and master the supernatural powers she possesses? Can she ignore her heart and reject the tempting Will because of their different classes in Djinn society? Laura has worked long and hard on Djinn. One of my first "web friends" through our blogs, I have seen her grow and mature as an author. I know how much we writers need to learn so we can hone and craft great books. Laura is miles ahead of me as a young writer, and I am honored that she let me contribute to her efforts! Laura's new slant on the Genie is a lot of fun. Her world and her characters have a vivid life to them and the feelings she addresses bring them to life. The exploration of prejudice and classism she explores through the story and the protagonist perspective has a fresh perspective in the contemporary work. The book still could use some work with active writing, verb variety, and variety in sentence structure. Some overcomplicated or overlong sentences remain, as well as a few confusing paragraphs. The way Laura wrote the book, the language might work much better as an audiobook or a movie. Some of the dialogue took a little analysis to follow the meaning. Kyra's tough girl character with a solid connection to her emotions was refreshing. She represented just the right mixture of soft and tough so that I didn't want to smack her for being a wimp, but also didn't consider her heartless. Laura thought a lot about how her characters would react to the strange surprises in their lives and that enhanced my experience as a reader. I can't wait to see what Laura will come up with next! Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own. Holy heck, was this book amazing or what? It went right off the chart for me. I’ve read my fair share of YA books, but never have I been so infatuated and enthralled by one than I was with this one. Let’s face it, most YA books are either dystopian, have vampires, werewolves, witches or zombie and they all feature at least one tortured soul and a love triangle. But not Djinn.
I loved this book and I started raving about it to people around me and on Facebook while I was still reading it. The plot was completely different from what I expected, the characters leaped off the pages and invaded my life throughout the time I spent reading this book. Hell, the characters became a part of my life.
Kyra our protagonist and extremely kick-ass heroine, is just that: KICK-ASS. I adore a strong female character and Kyra is exactly what I look for when reading. She knows how to look after herself, can kick butt from here to Mars, she’s independent and stubborn and she prefers to do things her way, but she’s not afraid to ask for help when she needs. She’s protective over those she cares about and my heart broke when I found she was betrayed by the one person she’d always loved the most. She’s tentative to show people she cares and loves them, because she went out of her way not to let people get close to her, but when she does, you can actually feel what she feels. It’s been a while since I admired a female character like I do Kyra.
I would go on and on about the male characters featured in this book, but I’m sure the minute I show people which guy I’m rooting for, the world will come down on me and slash me to pieces. All I can say is that the guys in this book are all amazingly written and well-rounded and they all sound super hunky!
This book was such an experience to read and I still get heart palpitations thinking about the ending, which, by the way, how could you, Laura Catherine?? I could go on raving about this book and dissecting every word of it until I’m blue in the face and my fingers fall of from typing, but I won’t because YOU HAVE TO READ IT!!!
Just finished Djinn! There were parts of it I LOVED and parts of it I didn't love. Honestly though, there really wasn't anything technically or structurally wrong with this book. No complaints in the grammar department, and everything was formatted right. What made this book a 3.5 versus a 4 or 5 was the fact that it's a classic YAPR (YA Paranormal Romance or as I like to call them: yappers).
I loved the world building! The Djinn society, their affinity for dogs, all the different magical powers, and most everything's explainable! I felt for Kyra when she found out the truth about her life, the descriptions were spot on, and really liked the moments when we were learning about the Djinn and their enemies.
Personally and this is just my opinion, I wasn't feeling the romance. I didn't like who she was with, didn't really see the appeal or connection. It wasn't quite insta-love, but almost. And the way Kyra acted about Will and her's relationship was just ridiculous. Also! I won't give any spoilers away, but something major happens and IMO this major event was overshadowed by the stupid relationship! I was so angry on the major events behalf! But really I couldn't get too angry cuz that's the nature of yappers. Oh, also the author is British, and it's set in America, but some words/spellings are still British. I didn't mind at all, but this may throw some readers off.
But if you like YA Paranormal Romances, not gonna lie this is a really solid and great book! Props Laura Catherine!

I LOVED reading Djinn! The writing was good, the characters were great, and the cover is perfect! Once I got done with the opening scene I knew it was going to be good.
Kyra and her father have been on the run for her whole life. He trains her to fight and to observe her surroundings. Kyra takes what her father teaches her and although she questions it she feels that he is just protecting her. She even goes through great lengths to not really get close to anyone. Suddenly everything that she has known was nothing but a huge lie. I don't want to give anything away so I'm just going to leave it at that :).
Will is just the perfect gentleman *swoons*. Although he is the perfect gentleman he can still kick some major butt. He fell in love with Kyra from the moment he saw her but because of his background she is forbidden to him. I loved reading Will's character.
The plot was very interesting and thought out. This was one of those books that you have to finish reading once you start. There is no stopping.
The only thing that I would have to say is that to me the ending felt rushed a bit. Other than that it was a great read. You cannot read this book and not read the next one. Questions were most definitely raised at the end.
Rating 4.5 Recommend? Yes

There were moments in Djinn where I was all "pfft, that's obvious." Other moments were I was all *blink* "did not see that coming ... "
And then the moment where I was all "OH MY GOD, NO!! WHY?!"
And while I understand the reasoning behind that moment, why it was necessary and how well the author handled it ... I'm still back there wondering if I could have done anything differently. What I, as a reader, could've done I'm not sure ... but there you have it.
What I liked:
Djinn, while it had it's moments of predictability, was different. I like different. It was YA urban fantasy world that has not only a plausible reason for it's denizens, but a caste system and something to fight against. A lot of somethings, actually. I found myself turning the pages as fast as my reading skills would allow, desperate to know what would happen next.
What I didn't love: The fact that Nate never got to tell Kyra that thing near the end ... I was looking forward to the fall out from that.
Oh, and that thing that I couldn't change.
But, really, one of those will be addressed in book two (or three or ... well a later book) and the other was, as I said, necessary.
And there were a couple of wonky word errors, but nothing serious.
Who I'd recommend it to: Fans of UF/PNR looking for a fresh spin on things that's dark without being too dark.
*I was given a copy of this book as a gift from Stephanie's Book Reports in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book in the Djinn series, and it is Kyra's story.
Kyra has been on the run with her dad her entire life. She has no idea who it is they are running from and why she is in danger. When she is finally captured, the information she receives turns her entire world upside down. What do you do when everything you thought you knew about yourself and your family turns out to be a lie, and the one person who is supposed to protect you no matter what turns out to be an impostor?
While this book does fall within the paranormal genre, it is definitely an original and unique story. When I first started reading this book, I must admit that I wasn't too thrilled about the concept, but it really turned out to be an enjoyable read. The characters are all well developed and easy to relate to. The story progresses at a steady pace, and it is filled with many twists and turns. I am always pleasantly surprised when a book completely draws me in allowing me to escape reality and get lost within it's pages, and this book certainly did that! If you are looking for a paranormal series that stands out among the rest, this is the one for you!!
This book has a couple of great things going for it. The biggest is that it isn't about zombies or vampires--it's something truly unique and original. The story is compelling, absorbing, and has some great twists to it. And the characters are so well-done, you get a feel and a sympathy for all of them, even the ones you don't like so much.
Laura Catherine manages to succeed in something that a lot of writers can't do--and that's to seamlessly transition her character through several changes. In the first part of the story, Kyra is living with her father in the "normal" world. Then she's kidnapped and taken to the Djinn world--a world very similar to ours in some ways, but drastically different in others. In that world, Kyra goes through other changes--learning how to fit into the djinn world, training to find her abilities, falling in love. All of it is engrossing and enthralling. This is definitely a page-turner, and I can't wait to find out what happens in the next installment.
I absolutely LOVED this book! It's well written, funny, romantic, and intriguing! I'm also in love with the cover (: I really liked all of the characters in this book. Will is such a gentlemen, which is pretty rare anymore. In a lot of books I've been reading lately the guy is always some huge bad ass with a soft heart. Will can kick some ass, but he is very caring and sweet. Kyra is an awesome heroine. She can handle herself, she's smart, and even though she's been through a lot, she never let's it get her down for long. The plot is very intriguing and tons of characters to fall for! I really enjoyed this "genie" world and can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

Djinn, another list to my favorite books. From the start up to the last, everything is perfect. The concept of the story is really good. It's not boring and it definitely is unique.
The characters, they are easy to love and like. Kyra, she's cool and I love her character. I love that she's not a wimp and she knows how to fight. Will on the other hand, even though he's a fighter, I love his gentleness. The other characters, Mia, Pyke, Nate and others.. They are also easy to relate with and like. I love the uniqueness of each characters, and the way Mia is...gahh...
The story, it's great and I love how interesting it is. It's not boring and the way the story ended.... Gah!! I cried!! This really is good... Can't wait to read more on what will happen next to Kyra!!
A very interesting concept. I was really intrigue on how the author would introduce the world of "Genies" in the story. I find the plot really good, it was really compelling, and the twist was very unexpected. I was really thrilled and bedazzled.
Kyra's character is a mixture of soft and strong. I felt her confusion, anger and pain. The only thing that I didn't get about her is that, she easily adapt to her new world, I mean, emotionally in regards with her Dad(Malcom).
Will's character is a rare one (for me at least... I've been reading to much bad-boy-outside-good-boy-inside). I'm really looking forward to see him fight for want he really feels.
The story is all in all, GREAT!! I liked the action, the twist, and the new idea of the world of Djinns.
Well, I read this book all the way to the end! Mainly because it was free for a review.
I must say for a debut this was very good.
It had lots of action, a great story line, and romance! It was laid out and written extremely well.
I would have read it just because I loved the cover.
I looked at some of the other reviews and apparently my opinion is not like the rest. I liked it. I did not love it. I probably would have put it down after 1/4 the way through it out of boredom. A lot was very predictable. I would recommend this as an easy read, but overall it wasn't for me. I go out and buy the actual book so I can read it over and over again. I will not be doing that with this one. One time was enough.
I loved Kyra -- she kicked it in all the right ways! I've never read a story about Djinn before, but I guess I will have to look into reading more. Loved the romance aspect and the parrallels to interracial.intercultural relationship issues. Plenty of hot guys to crush on in this one.
That said, there were a few problems with the book like missing words here and there, and I skimmed in a couple of places because it got dull (or maybe it was too late to be reading and I was just tired?). Very good by the end, however, so if you want a good, quick paranormal book that is about something other than werewolves and vampires you will probably like it.
Djinn is one of those addictive paranormal romances that you just can't put down until you finish it. This is a fabulous first novel for a debut author. I loved all the characters, but Pyke... I can't say why I am not happy about the ending, you will have to read it to find out. If you loved Touching Smoke by Airicka Phoenix and Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead you will love Djinn by Laura Catherine!
I bought this book for my kindle after reading the synopsis. An interesting concept! I really enjoyed this book as it was a light fun read. The writing was great and the character development was spot on. You get action, adventure, romance, mystery, and humor. If you like cheesy teen movies and throw in ancient middle eastern folklore, then this book is for you. I only wish the ending didn't feel so abrupt. That being said I can't wait for book two!!!
It took me ages to get through the first part of the book but at chapter four the story started and after that it was great fun. It's a nice, well thought out world, and the heroine, Kyra, as well as the hero, Will, are both very likable. The plot is intriguing too but I didn't realise it would end on a cliffhanger! I'll definitely look out for the second half as I'd like to see how it ends.
I was a Beta reader for this book and I cannot wait to see/read the final product!! It's a unique and exciting story, I wish book 2 was already out as I want to know more about what happens. I haven't read a book about Djinn before so it was really good to read something new!!
I had the pleasure of beta reading this book for Author Laura Catherine. I was drawn immediately into the story and by the end it left me wanting more. I look forward to the release of this book to add officially to my collection and for the next book in the series. Well done!
It has an interesting premise: Djinn and the implied folklore about them. But it would’ve been better if their world was more fleshed out, their history better explained instead of “she learned their history”, and more emphasis placed on who the bad guys are and why they are a threat to “normal” Djinn.
The societal structure reminded me a lot of “Vampire Academy” and the Earth Kingdom in “Avatar: The Last Airbender” – but the rules weren’t clearly explained to Kyra who is entirely new to this way of life, which causes conflict that doesn’t build systematically and is over in a flash.
The problem(s) with this book: a serious lack of proofreading (missing words, misspelled words, missing apostrophes, etc.), lack of consistency (she tries to escape at gas station, yet later bemoans the fact that she didn’t try, etc.), lack of logic (too easily believes what they tell her to be the truth – negating a lifetime of beliefs in less than a chapter), the romance isn’t believable, some characters feel like they’re only there to move the plot forward, the main character doesn’t believe in regular showers – which means that after reading a couple of chapters I need to take a shower to feel clean (but that’s a personal thing and not a technical issue with the book).
But despite all of these issues, it is interesting. There’s something there that made me want to push through all the things that pulled me from the story and get to the end.
The ending is a bit abrupt, but I’ll see if the next book makes up for it.
Djinn started at a breakneck pace and didn't slow from there.
Very much a YA book with the protagonist being all of 16 having her life and who she trusts most, completely flipped right of the (ahem)..blue and then catapulted into a new world with new people, new social rules and new expectations.
the book manages to give each character their own voice and each place had it's own distinct feel.
I liked the book concept but the writing style felt more like young adult fiction which might not be a genre I enjoy. The characters' decisions toward the end were frustrating and the predictable twist of her marrying into royalty.
Very creative and interesting urban fantasy. A unique version of an old classic. I just wish the world building and character development were a little better.
Djinn is the very first book I ever self-published. It was born from an idea I had about genies while working in a Barker's Delight bakery back in 2012.
The story of a headstrong girl who discovers she is not a normal teenager. Throw in magic, shapeshifting, politics, forbidden love, fights for equality and that probably about sums up Djinn.
*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Kyra has been on the run with her dad her entire life. Trying to live a stable life and actually staying in one place seems very complicated. Kyra has nightmares that are so vivid they seem so real to her, almost as if they are part of her.
With Kyra and her dad's guards down the men looking for her show up and take her to a secret compound where her nightmares become a reality. Everyone has the same color of beautiful gold eyes as her and she learns that she is not as normal as she thinks.
Will finally returned Kyra to her parents and now must teach her the Djinn way. Teaching her the customs of their ways proves to be hard when Kyra does not believe in all of them, including that the boy she loves is actually forbidden.
I knew when I read the synopsis that I was going to like this book. What I didn’t realize was that I was going to love this book. Kyra is your typical teenager that just wants a normal life, but meeting Will and learning all of these new secrets brings out the feisty side of Kyra. Will really tries his best to play by the rules but finds himself questioning the rules as well.
This book is very well written. The author keeps you turning the pages to find out what is going to happen. I cannot wait to read more of this series.
Thank you so much for the chance to read this wonderful story.
My Favorite Moment: One of my favorite moments was when Kyra found out what she really is.
“I’m a Djinn,” I repeated for the sixteenth time, and still didn’t believe it.
“Yes, darling,” Isabelle said, pouring three cups of tea, though no one had asked for any.
“I’m a genie who grants wishes and lives in a lamp?” I cocked my head at her, in the hope she’d realise just how insane she sounded.
First a quick thanks to the author for giving me a copy of the book when I won a giveaway! I love winning books and this was a great prize!
Cover! I think this cover is really awesome. The colors are great and it gives an air of mystery, but once you read the story it all comes together.
I went through emotions in this book just like Kyra did. At first everything was happy and then - BOOM - your life turns upside down. I went up and down with her and I was confused during part of the book -wondering where these plot turns were going to go. However, things progress nicely and I enjoyed how time moved pretty quickly. If something wasn't important then we didn't hear about it, which is how I like my books to go. If there's a three week period and only one event goes on then I don't need to hear about all three weeks, which is something that Laura Catherine does nicely.
I admit that I was shocked that the ending was the ending. I went to turn the book and...nothing. I was pretty sad that it ended! Remember how I said that there were ups and downs? Make sure to grab some tissues towards the ending, you're going to need them.
If you guys like romance (you have to if you're here right?) then you'll be in for a treat. At one point it looks like not a love triangle, but a rectangle...although not really? You'll just have to read this to understand.
I loved all the mythology that was in the book. I've never really looked in the Djinn so it was really interesting to look at something that isn't as popular as say, vampires are. Very original content and I was super pleased! Book two next?!?
Very different from the normal "vampire and werewolves" fare. That is why I was drawn to this book. I recently read the Forbidden Trilogy by Karpov Kinrade(I may do a post on it soon), and this kind of reminds me of that series mixed in with one I love, but have yet to finish, called The Significance Series by Shelly Crane.
Kyra is a very strong character. Very strong-willed, smart, resourceful. She analyzes her situation and tries not to get too emotional.
I don't want to give any of the twists and turns away at all, but this is probably one of the least predictable YA novels I have ever read. You think you know where it's going and WHAM! a new twist. That is probably why I was up until 3 a.m. last night finishing this book. Characters aren't stereotypical, events aren't what they seem. Very refreshing in this genre.
I found myself wishing this book was longer. I wanted to know more about the Blooders, the history of the djinn and their wars. I guess if this is going to be a trilogy, there is more to come.
I also like the social commentary. Most of the time I try to ignore that, but the commentary in this book was written in such a way that it wasn't preachy, it wasn't political. It was just part of the story and events weren't contrived to get the point across. It was woven more naturally into the story.
This is strictly YA fare as well, I would be comfortable recommending it to a younger teen. I wish books like these were written when I was younger!!!
Djinn was a great read! I really enjoyed how the book started off. Laura kept the book at a nice fast paced read and it was very interesting. Not everything was revealed to the reader and we learned things at about the same time the main character did, which was nice because then there was still mystery and a need to keep reading.
The book was really well written. I loved that there was a prologue at the beginning that helps you understand some things further down into the story because it clears a lot of confusion up. I also found that the story was very original. Laura was able to make you believe one thing and then turn the whole story around.
I really loved the way the characters were written. They weren't too revealed, which left some good mystery in there, and it was fun to see all of the different reactions certain characters had when things were revealed. I also liked that we got a basic run-down on the character's appearances from the main character's point of view without too much description.
I found that the storyline was really well planned out. Every piece fit together perfectly which made for a well structured story which I really enjoyed. I liked how the book ended, and I'm super excited to read the next book in the series, as well as the novellas that will go with them. I have to give this book 5 out of 5 stars. You wrote a fantastic book, Laura!
