Rate this book
Good Design, Down to the LetterPackages on store shelves, posters on building walls, pages of a website-all contain information that needs to be communicated. And at the heart of that communication is visually interesting, interactive, expressive and captivating. Each letter must come alive; therefore, each letter must be carefully crafted or chosen. A solid foundation in typography, as well as an understanding of its nuances, will help you optimize your visual communication-in whatever form it takes.By breaking down the study of type into a systematic progression of relationships-letter, word, sentence, paragraph, page and screen-award-winning graphic designer and professor of communication design Denise Bosler provides a unique and illuminating perspective on typography for both print and digital media and for designers of all skill levels.Through instruction, interviews and real-world inspiration, Mastering Type explores the power of each typographic element--both as it stands alone and as it works with other elements--to create successful design, to strengthen your skill set and to inspire your next project.

Fundamentals of Designing with Words would be a more apt title for this beautiful and hefty book that spends as much time on lettering and graphic composition as it does on type and typesetting. Type actually seems to be the weak point for Ms Bosler, who (justly) takes issue with Adobe calling the alley a ‘gutter’ but wrongly equates a straight quote with a prime and conveys only a very hand‐wavy explanation of differing font standards.

Anyone seeking guidance on type‐driven book design would be better with the more nuanced (and easier to carry!) The Elements of Typographic Style , but this is solid starting point for one interested in the design of brochures and posters.

This was an interesting primer on typography... good enough for me, but it may drag on for someone more experienced.

I read this for my class, and I loved it. Bosler really did a good job of explaining everything about typography. It was easy to understand and I love the examples and pictures used for each section. My favorite part of the book would be the interviews with the different designers. Definitely give this book a go if you're a design student.
