A damaged soul. A madman plotting in the shadows. The city won’t stand for long.
With the armies of undead slowly encircling Greendown, James Holden doesn’t have much time to get behind its walls before the witches and vampires of the northern mountains finish closing in. He’ll have to get his lich-cursed apprentice and the rest of their party through hundreds of miles of ghoul-infested forest before it’s too late to save the city.
Burning through the limits a mortal should have is catching up to James, and unless he can find a way to repair the damage, his magic is as deadly to him as it is to his enemies. In a world where only the strongest get to make the rules, he can’t afford to be left behind. He’ll need to find a way to keep pace with those he’s training, even as the planet’s most powerful warriors hunt for his head at the behest of the gods.
It’s time for the Judge to do something different. James Holden might have to pass Judgment by Jury.
Michael Head is the author of the Threads of Fate series. He was severely injured while serving in the military, and used his time recovering to rediscover his love for books. After medically retiring, Michael went back to college to finish his degree and become a professor. When the coronavirus shut down his school, his wife encouraged him to finally take the leap and try writing his own books. He found his experience in combat allowed him to write detailed and realistic fight scenes. Those battles, combined with his attention to detail and ability to plan vast, elaborate, and comprehensive worlds, make for fast-paced and thrilling books. With, of course, the occasional touches of humor and sarcasm thrown in the mix.
He currently lives in Texas where his wife, who is still currently serving in the military, is stationed. His days are filled with hiding from their three daughters, two dogs, and three cats. He is also losing an ongoing war with the neighborhood squirrels, but he will continue to fight until the bitter end.
Usually, I would not write a review but I am getting tired to see Roberto Flores pushing down another good book while getting so much visibility, often ranking among the top reviewers of the LitRPG genre. After a look at his profile, it appears that he consumes approximately 1.5 books per day, (39 books read in February alone), most falling within the LitRPG category. It's hardly surprising that his ratings appear arbitrary, vacillating between extremes of 1 or 5 stars, with no middle ground. One must question whether bingeing on this genre distorts one's critical judgment, assuming he actually read these books. If you've ever stepped into a perfume store, you'll get my point: after just 10 minutes inside, I wouldn't trust myself to buy anything.
About the book: it is good, it is original, the characters are interesting and well fleshed. The MC can make mistakes, which should be an essential trait for any well written main character. Compared to the previous volume, the writing quality has significantly improved. I recommend the book, it brings something fresh to the LitRPG genre.
The story is severely stilted. Without the set up from book one to prop it up, it had stalled considerably. The main character seems like a different person than who was in the first book. A very lacking, very sloppy, very unimpressive character. The overall plot is contrived and the book falls flat from all these issues. This was a major disappointment after the potential book one had.
Not a bad book, OK storyline, MC, and power progression. my only issue is the MC caring and knapsack, this is a RPG where is the dimensional storage for the MC after all he goes from world to world. My only other issue is for a MC who supposedly is this judge, why does he make such silly mistakes. I will keep reading the story and hopefully things with the MC will get better. Like I said the MC‘s OK but I’m not totally impressed. But I’ll give it a chance.
This series has some great human moments as we see just how James survives the chaos and challenges from this latest world. With having such an unknown history, Head can change how his growth and consciousness reflects on the previous visits. For a random idea, the world building and growth of our MC shows we have so many high ratings on his books. My only negative is this series won't be a massive long one, which would give me something to get my teeth into.
I read at the end of book one that the author thought that this would be s trilogy, but for the love of god don't let this series end at book three. There is so much potential and the main character really makes this series shine. There is no way everything could be answered in book three, who's behind the world hopping, does he ever make it home, will anyone ever get his jokes? Please don't let this end at book three.
Contrary to some reviews, I didn’t see any major differences in character personality from book 1 to book 2. It was still a great read.
I loved the final showdown between Greasy and James, but I wonder at the purpose of Greasy’s continued existence in this series. Mainly because he’s being given so much airtime, but he’s a failure with little to no impact on the story. I’d call him “comic relief” if his cameos weren’t so revolting, harmful, and dark.
The undead of this world are going to prove a problem for James Holden. He barely survived his first major encounter with them and that was only a portion of the army. Now, another wing of the army has their undead eyes on the city of Greendown. James and his team will have a lot of work ahead of them with this siege. That’s no even accounting for the powerful Green Wardens hunting for him or the deranged White Wardens.
I am really enjoying this series! It’s always fun to see an overpowered character encounter something new that they can’t immediately overcome. The new characters are very interesting and I do hope that they appear again in the next book! Neil Hellegers did an excellent job with the narration.
As the title says, another blow it up, much it down, shoot'em if you got'em doozy.. Highly recommend JD Glasscock Author of the Series Blood Brothers and the Dream and Embers n Ash and Nocturne
4.5 stars. The MC's assholery was reined in this time around making it a much more readable book for me. It loses half a star for another recurring villain who simply won't die, but at least in this case it appears they, much like Gollum in LotR, may have a role to play before the end.
I almost put this in my DNF pile, it took me weeks to finish. I gave the first book 5 stars, I really enjoyed it! This book was tedious and didn’t keep my interest at all.
I enjoy the book. Very much disliked the chapters about Gleason. Crap character who I am not interested in reading about. I would skim his chapters until dialogue to make sure I didn't miss anything. I didn't. The first book was amazing with very little missing I would have liked included. Second book? Yeah, not sure how I feel, just wild, rough, choppy. I will likely get the third book.
