I expected it to be funnier, but the humor was light.
Other than that, the facts seemed pretty true as far as I've seen italians myself, and most of them are also suited for Romanians :)

Best taken with a large grain of salt, it's a pleasant diversion, nothing more and nothing less. Of course, the whole point of the book is to stereotype, and if one picked it up thinking something different, one is a f***wit.

A very entertaining read; as an Italian I can say that some things are very true, stereotypical they may be! I especially loved the part about the politics and bureaucracy, which is unfortunately very true. Highly recommended for a good hearty laugh, but also to understand more about some odd Italian quirks, such as the "bella figura", "l'arte dell'arrangiarsi" and of course the general obsession with food and beauty, which is so imprinted in the Italian psyche.

Un libro che ci inquadra, noi italiani, in 86 misere paginette. C'è dentro tutto: dalle barzellette sui carabinieri alla Lega Nord, dalla famiglia Agnelli al campanilismo, dalle veline ai figli di mammà, dalla burocrazia al Corriere dello Sport.
Se lo traducessero in italiano, lo regalerei ad un sacco di gente.

we are all that. Although there were no subtitles of the national anthem for the matches of the national team: we do not like subtitles, and we are not used to them. All our movies are dubbed. It has to do with the literacy, I suppose.

Simple and interesting
Gives a fair amount of information that clarifies bits and pieces of Italian behavior. Some are very funny. Hopefully some Italians will read this lets us know if it is truthful.

This book contains insights into Italian life, tips on how to blend in and... quite a delightful degree of political incorrectness!
The book is small and divided into chapters denoting different areas of life which is quite handy if you're looking for specific information.
The tone of the guide is lovingly ironic - of course, the author himself has lived in Italy for years and is married to an Italian signora. Martin Solly describes the nation's faults as well as good qualities and gives valuable advice on how to deal with day-to-day life situations.
My favourite part of the book is about regionalism - the predominant feature of all Italians (speaking of paradoxes..). Solly also ponders why Italian men are their mummas' boys, what makes love life in Italy so special and how not to cut una brutta figura in front of your friends.
I recommend this book not only to those who are interested in Italy (for you, fratelli, this is a must-read!) or europhiles but also as a pleasant past-time to everyone who enjoys a witty and concise read.

It's scary how much truth there is in this little book...
The part about kissing other people... Jeez, I'm one of the few Italians who actually hates that. Christmas time is usually a torture for me with everyone wanting to kiss my cheek and me trying to retreat. And going to France to visit relatives is even worse.
My Finnish big brother once said about me: «You look Italian but you don't act Italian!» and that's true. I have a Mediterranean look - dark skin, dark hair, dark eyes - but I act like a North European...
The part about the school is also extremely true. The dental care part, as well. Sometimes I think Italians prefer expensive dresses to perfect teeth and it's sad. I noticed the same in Japan, though: beautiful girls with fashionable dresses but crooked teeth.
I'll slowly read my way through the whole series of books.

O brosura sumara a felului de a fi al italienilor. E mult spus ca sunt xenofobi, au intr-adevar niste tipicitati mai dificil de tolerat sau inteles, dar ce individ nu are? Indiferent de natie. Am inceput sa o citesc in contextul in care in ultimii ani am interactionat cu italieni in mod constant, zilnic si intr-un mod obositor de cele mai multe ori. Nu zic ca vine cu cine stie ce concepte acest ghid, dupa cum ii spune si numele, nu are cum sa cuprinda istoria, cultura si civilizatia Italiei. Are insa niste puncte care stau in picioare si care te trimit, daca esti curios sau interesat, spre aprofundarea unor idei.
Recunosc faptul ca am avut cateva momente in care am gandit "aha, deci asa se explica cutare lucru", sau " fix asa fac, deci fix asa, la naiba" insa cumva am ramas si cu cateva idei de abordat in conversatiile cu ei. Pe scurt, e cat trebuie cat sa nu te plictiseasca si sa te trimita unde trebuie daca reuseste sa iti trezeasca interesul.
Recunosc faptul ca am avut cateva momente in care am gandit "aha, deci asa se explica cutare lucru", sau " fix asa fac, deci fix asa, la naiba" insa cumva am ramas si cu cateva idei de abordat in conversatiile cu ei. I have read a few other books in the Xenophobe's guide series, and this one is so far one of the best. It have lived in Italy and found that pretty much everything described is accurate, and everything a first-timer needs to know is included. I just wish that these Xenophobe's guides were more than a mere 86 pages long.

An instant cure for political correctness.
Found it in my partner's house when the whole bunch of housemates got evicted. I will never part with it!
It's currently in my living room, being shown to all my acquaintances as a quick guide for handling us Italian expats. Hilarious. Also, sad but mostly true.

An amusing read, although my Italian (or should I say Sicilian) husband did not share my enthusiasm! Anyway, the book surely resonated with my personal experience of living in Italy for a while and of Italian life and culture.

Not a very good book. It was missing two things: anecdotes + statistics. Anecdotes are what make this type of book FUN. Statistics are what make this kind of book USEFUL. This book has very few of either. But still, it's a book, and hey, I've never written a book, so who am I to judge? Two stars.

Simpatico, su tanti aspetti l'autore riesce a inquadrarci perfettamente, ma alcuni li ho trovati semplicemente falsi. Purtroppo Solly non riesce a tenere alto l'interesse e il divertimento per tutto il libro, pur breve, e a tratti sopraggiunge la noia.

Ksenofobio estas eble la plej grava morala krimo en la nuna okcidenta mondo, kie la moralaj leĝoj ĉiam pli relativas. Tamen nome tie aperis la tuta serio de la “ksenofobiaj gvidlibroj”, nur du pecoj de kiu ĝis nun estis esperantigitaj. Mi ĝuis ambaŭ.
Priskriboj sinceraj, sed amikecaj
Mi tuj klarigu al la toleremega kaj politike korektega esperantistaro, ke temas kompreneble pri nura ŝerco, ebla en la ankoraŭ ne tiom striktaj 1990-aj. Ni povas diri ion ajn, sed ĉiu nacio/etno havas specifajn kutimojn kaj tradiciojn, kiuj por eksterulo povus esti strangaj, amuzaj aŭ eĉ frenezaj. Tio neniel rilatas al naciismo aŭ rasismo, ja temas pri neeviteblaj kulturaj diferencoj kiujn oni konu por kompreni kaj akcepti. Mi ne certas, ke la malkaŝa rasismo en Ukrainio estas preferinda ol tiu kaŝita en Usono, kiel tion esprimis la afrikdevena usonano, plene ĝuinta ambaŭ. Sed mi ŝatas ironion kaj sincerecon, ja se bonkoraj ili ne povas damaĝi ies ajn sentojn.
La supremenciitaj libroj estas bona ekzemplo de tia aliro al la problemo. Ili prezentas la koncernajn popolojn ne idealaj, sed ĉarmaj, jen amuzaj, jen stultetaj, jen saĝaj, sed ĉiam vivaj kaj realismaj. La aŭtoroj devenas de ekstera medio, sed dum pluraj jaroj loĝas en Italio kaj Nederlando respektive, do perfekte konas la priskribatan medion kaj rimarkas ĝiajn specifajn trajtojn, kiuj por lokanoj estas memevidentaj, do nevideblaj.
La tradicioj kaj psikologiaj trajtoj estas prezentataj sur ties historia fono, kiel rezulto de certaj sociaj, kulturaj kaj politikaj procezoj. Jen ekzemplo el la ĉapitro “Nordo kaj Sudo”:
“Nord-italoj rigardas sudulojn kiel koruptajn, duon-arabajn kamparanojn, kiuj toleras Mafion, kaj vivtenas sin helpe de enspezoj generataj de la laborema Nordo. Sud-italoj rigardas nordulojn kiel senkulturajn duon-aŭstrajn aŭ duon-francajn kamparanojn nelavitajn, kiuj, pro hazardo de la naskiĝo, loĝas en la plej riĉa parto de la lando, kaj vivtenas sin helpe de la enspezoj generataj de suduloj, kiuj laboras en iliaj fabrikoj aŭ kultivas ilian teron”.
La delikata aŭtoro tuj aldonas, ke “ambaŭ bildoj estas troigoj” – la rimarko apenaŭ bezonata, ĉar evidenta.
Legante pri la italoj mi ĉiam sentis min iom embarasita, ĉar pluraj psikologiaj trajtoj estas propraj ankaŭ al mia nacio, do al la rusoj. Tion kaŭzis similaj socio-politikaj cirkonstancoj, pro kiuj homoj konsideras la ŝtaton sistemo fremda kaj ofte malica, do koncentriĝas je privata vivo kaj klopodas ajnaforme eviti renkontiĝojn kun tiu ĉi stulta monstro, kies interesoj havas nenion komunan al la niaj.

Mi ne legis ŝiajn beletraĵojn, sed povas nun imagi ties stilon.
Unue mi ne komprenis, kio stumbligas min, sed poste divenis ke tion kaŭzis la purisma, zorgeme selelktema lingvaĵo, iom diferenca de la ĉiutaga Esperanto, kiun mi vidas en sociaj retoj, gazetaj artikoloj, libroj kaj amikecaj babiladoj. Mi ne povas diri, ke tio grave ĝenis min, ja similaj ekzemploj haveblas ankaŭ en la rusa literaturo, ĉefe inter adeptoj de la tiel nomata “vilaĝa skolo” aŭ “la patriotismaj verkistoj”. Fakte mi nur sentis ke krom la sencaj kaj stilaj celoj la tradukisto strebas porti al la leganto ankaŭ iun kroman ideon, enkudritan inter la legeblaj alinejoj. Cetere kiel jam montris historio de la rusa lingvo, klopodoj kontroli kaj purigi la lingvon estas ne tre fruktodonaj.
La libron pri la nederlandanoj tradukis iu Simon Davies. Lia traduko estas senriproĉa, almenaŭ mi, kiu ne konis la originalon, sentis neniun duarangecon foje propran al la tradukaĵoj.
Ambaŭ eldonaĵoj estas tre simplaj. Poŝa grandeco, kartonaj kovriloj, pure blanka papero, folioj algluitaj kaj kaze de la itala libro ne tre forte. Ĉu tio estis hazarda koincido aŭ plia pruvo de la itala senzorgemo? Hm, evidente mi devas plani vojaĝon al Italio...

Miła lektura na jeden wieczór, napisana lekkim językiem i z dużym przymrużeniem oka. Sporo stereotypów, ale też trochę ciekawych informacji.
