This is delightful. How did Scholastic become the twin (of St. Benedict) whose love was deeper (famous story from St Gregory’s Life of Benedict)? Through a form of storytelling called midrash (Jesus’ parables are midrash), Sister Carmel creates a Life of Scholastica that recognizes the monastic tradition received from the desert and the many stories of small communities of women ascetics. This is an easy read. All Benedictine Oblates should read this.
This is a beautiful little book. It's one of the most informative works on St. Scholastica I've ever read. Author Carmel Post, SGS spells out how she came to create this hagiography of St. Scholastica. It does great service, not only to increased knowledge of a great saint, but also is a contribution to the acknowledgment of the role of women in early Church hagiography. Well done!
