It takes off fast. It is brilliantly edited storytelling that takes off like it is going to rip your hands off. You could read over a weekend, but why let the pure enjoyment slip away?
This should be offered to all those non-reading teens who insist they love the NBA. This could very well make readers out of them all!!!
I enjoyed staying up to 3 a.m. several times to read this one. It was truly enjoyable reading, and the kind of book I hope to find more of. The author really needs to come out with more books. This one really picks up toward the end, too, pushing buttons, sparking memories of NBA great moments, players, seasons, dynasties, and educates on the off-court things that us non-players never see.
I will definitely recommend this one to many friends. Author Tom McEachin was smart to recognize the storytelling ability of Rod Hundley, his place in U.S. basketball history, and capture it all in the former player turned announcer's words.
Finding any error was difficult, but finally, a few extra spaces and tossed out helping words were missing toward the end -- other than that, it is a major hidden sports literary treasure. I think a number of non-basketball fans would find it enjoyable, too.
I grew up a Utah Jazz fan and loved watching Utah Jazz games with Hot Rod's brodcasting along with Ron Bune. Now Hot Rod is radio only so I flat out refuse to watch Jazz games anymore I don't care if the Jazz game is on TNT, ESPN it doesn't matter and when Hot Rod retires (or passes away which ever comes first) That is a sad day for me because that is the day I will stop caring about Utah Jazz basketball siriously. The book is a must for Utah Jazz fans and Hot Rod fans he talks about his favorite moments while broadcasting for the Jazz. He gives his excellent insight on the great NBA teams and players from the early days to the late 90s. He has entire chapters on John Stockton and the Mail Man Karl Malone. There are also some funny stories he tells from both his playing days one involves being on the team plane on the way home whtn they have to make a emergancy landing in the middle of a corn field in the middle of nowhere that was so funny. He also tells about some funny moments he has had as a broadcaster. He even has a chapter where he focuses on teaching the reader the fundamentals of the game and gives some helpful tips so you can work on your game. He talks about how he became a broadcaster when he was new at that job Chick Hern offered him some great advice to help him do the best possible job at calling the play by play. He told Hot Rod when you're giving the play by play describe it the way you would describe it so someone who is blind because your radio listeners can't see what is going on. As someone with low vision I love listening to Hot Rod's call he has mastered that skill and I always know what is going on on the floor and exactly where the basketball is that's another reason why I am hooked on Hot Rod. Get Hot Rod's book I really hope you enjoy it and You gotta love it baby! Hey if anyone knows if this book is out on CD please leave a comment on this review let me know where I can get it thanks.
