The Get to Know series by Nancy I. Sanders is a great way to introduce Biblical characters and history in an age friendly way – with full color illustrations and pictures and fun informational facts along the way. I chose to review the book, Jesus, which even though most children know about Him still don’t know the historical facts surrounding Him and the times during which He lived and ministered. This 122 page book covers more than just facts about Jesus such as what it was like living under Roman rule as a Jew, what festivals and why they were celebrated, along with information about his miraculous birth and His death and resurrection. The only thing I disagree with is on page 36 when the author states “Jesus had sisters and at least four brothers. His brothers’ names were James, Joseph, Simon and Judas.” – I’ve not seen Scriptural evidence that shows that Mary had other children, not that it would be horrible if she did, but I don’t think it’s been proven as Biblical or historical that Jesus had earthly siblings except for Brothers and Sisters as they are related to Him through a new birth.

That said, this book is really great, the full color illustrations and pictures, some from historical places and paintings from famous painters add a real glimpse into what was Jesus’ life like and also about Him as a person. I enjoy that the author does include the fact that archeologists even acknowledge the fact that there are real evidences found that the stories told in the Bible including Jesus are proven fact in the archeological record. There are quotes by those who study the Bible including the historian Josephus and maps that show how the Temple would have looked during Jesus’ life and where Roman control was centered. There are several icons through out the book such as, Scripture (these tell you where to find more information in the Bible itself), Bible hero, Eyewitness Account, Did You Know and a word bank – all these help children in understanding more about Jesus.

At the end there is a timeline of Jesus’ life and comparing it to world history, which puts things a bit more into an understandable time frame for children, a glossary of all the words from the word bank, selected biography, source notes and student resources. The back cover of the book also makes note that the book is aligned to Common Core Standards which may be good for those children who are in schools that align to common core. I know this will be enjoyed by my children for a long time to come and can’t wait to read the others in the series which include Mary, King David and the Apostle Paul – hopefully there will be more to follow – a great way to write a report on Jesus and make understanding His life a bit easier.

My Review:

All these years I have bought biographies for my children to write reports from and to learn more on a specific individual but I recently come across and author that writes biographies based on Biblical figures. Now we can have these type of books around for our children to write papers on. The people discussed in the Bible really did exist so why not right a report on David or Daniel? Well now they can! Nancy Sanders has written a series called the "Get to Know" series and each book contains a multitude of information on each Bible figure. And there is plenty of information there to create all sorts of resources for projects and reports.

In Jesus (Get To Know), you will find many facts about our Saviour as well as maps and timelines that explain his life and ministry. Full of interesting facts, Bible knowledge and very intriguing photographs these biographies will be all you need to learn about Jesus and so much more. Geared toward the 6-10 age group and a very short read.

Sara's Review (A review by a 10-yr-old)
I liked this book because it was easy to understand. It had pictures of artifacts from Bible times like leather sandals with captions next to the pictures that helped to understand some of pictures better. It also had a word bank that gave the meanings of the bold face words like "I Am This Word" which is a special name for God, meaning "He is Alive Forever". I especially liked the "Did You Know" parts and loved being able to see Jesus' family tree without having to read all those long lists of names in the Bible. I really loved learning things about Jesus I didn't know

I really, really, really recommend this because it is a way cool book to learn about Jesus.

My Review:
As a grandmother I love reading and reviewing children’s Christian-based books because I am always looking for books to help keep my grandchild rooted in God’s Word. We often read and review them together.

This time my granddaughter specifically asked for the book “Get to Know JESUS”. When I asked why this book, her reply was, “You can never know enough about Jesus”. She is 100% right!

As I read this book, I was amazed at how much information was packed into 113 actual pages, not to mention the help pages at the end. It is written in easy-to-understand language with short but content filled events that will not overwhelm your child. All throughout the book there are pictures, scripture, fun facts and maps to further explain each event. One of my favorite parts of the book was the timeline of Jesus. It is from the time of his birth to the time London was founded.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. Every parent or grandparent should take the time to explore this book with their children or grandchildren. It is truly a factual book of Jesus from birth to becoming the man who changed history by giving us the plan of Salvation through his birth and death. I am so proud of my granddaughter for choosing this book.

Disclosure: I was given a copy of this Book by the publisher, ZonderKidz, for an honest review. I was not required to write a favorable review nor was I compensated for my review. The opinions in this review are my own.

An Outstanding Biblical Resource for Kids

I was very excited to read Nancy Sanders’ Get to Know books, including this one about Jesus. The whole series is excellent. In this book, Nancy does a really good job of helping kids understand the context of the life of Jesus, both culturally and Biblically. I like how photos and maps are included. She also provides extra helps, such as definitions at the bottom of pages and in a glossary at the end of the book. Information boxes are included on many pages that tell about Bible people, ideas, or events that tie in with the story. A timeline and a list of additional resources are given at the end of the book.

Nancy places Jesus’ life in the context of the whole Biblical picture from Genesis to Revelation, describing the problem of sin that began in the Garden of Eden and how Jesus was God’s way of taking care of that problem, and reaching all the way to the end times and Jesus’ part in those.

The book includes chapters on Jesus’ birth, childhood, role as a teacher, parables, miracles, role as Son of God, and, of course, his last week and his resurrection. Nancy’s style of writing is clear and easy for children to understand.

The book (and also the others in the series) include references to archaeological evidence and eye witness accounts as helping to substantiate the truth of the Bible. I did not personally find that as helpful as the rest of the book, because for me Biblical truth is a matter of faith, not proofs. But for those who want that kind of information for their children, the books can be a good reference.

I recommend JESUS highly!

It's time for summer reading and what better book to read with my son than Get to Know Jesus: A Full Color Biography for Kids. As a new reader at six years old, Reed can be easily intimidated by books. I think the beautiful images in this book make it less so and ads to the story so much.

I love that this reaches kids on their level and is so much more down to earth and relatable for them than the Bible. It's based on the Bible and Biblically accurate; just interpreted more for kids.

I actually really enjoyed reading this with Reed because of all the amazing images, maps and diagrams that really brought Jesus's life, to life!

The large print helps little ones read it and the vocabulary defined at the bottom of the pages helps them understand words that aren't used in their everyday life like "ark" or "Savior." The need for this was dead on because so often Reed would ask me what something meant and there it was for him at the bottom!

So much of Jesus's life as an adult is what Sunday school typically focusses on and I like that this shows him as a boy, just like my Reed, that had a normal life of school and church and learning and growing. It's important for my kids to see him that way; as a human being just like them, to find him more relatable.

Get to Know Jesus: A Full Color Biography for Kids is great for little ones to learn about Jesus in terms and images that they can really understand.

GET TO KNOW: JESUS is a very good book. It tells all about Jesus all the way from His birth to His death and resurrection. I learned that God can do anything, even conquer death. The pictures are very well done by a good artist.

Bad points: the facts were not presented as facts. They were presented in manners such as “Many scholars believe…” which seems to imply that it may not be true. It is gospel, so it is true.

GET TO KNOW: JESUS includes eye-witness accounts, and definitions and did you know facts, and includes information on other Bible heroes. Recommended for those who want to know more about Jesus in an easy to read format. Christian school libraries, church libraries, homeschools…

4 stars. Available in paperback. 128 pages.

This book is a special book…
not only does it give many interesting facts about Jesus, but it also follows the Common Core Standards!

The author did an amazing job including many beautiful 4-color maps and photos, along with relative scripture references and lots of fun facts.

For children, I would imagine this book would be very exciting to read… and believe me, it is very easy to read

The eyewitness accounts and word bank makes the story of Jesus even more interesting...

And the chapters are very descriptive – the important plan, the miracles, the unexpected news… even the timeline is full of pertinent information.

The author does a great job of writing the book about Jesus, telling about his life even before his birth, with many signs recorded of the coming of the Messiah.

All in all, an informative book, and one you might want to read yourself, before reading it to your children.

I was given a free copy of this book in advance from the BookLook Blogger program in exchange for an honest review.

Get to Know Jesus is a biography for kisd by Nancy I. Sanders. What a great book! The book makes it easy for children to understand who Jesus is. I love the vibrant and beautiful pictures.
In addition to the colorful pictures, there are sections of the following:
Did You Know? - Which tells of small tidbits of information or facts
Eyewitness Account - Which is of historians of the time of eyewitness accounts that tell of Jesus
Word Bank - This is on most pages that tell the meaning of certain words. These words are also included in the Glossary of the book
Bible Hero - Tells of certain heroes from the Bible scriptures
Timeline of Jesus - Shows an approximate dates of Jesus's life and what was going on around the world at the same time
I think this book is great for kids and adults, as well. I enjoyed reading it. I was quite impressed with it. I look forward to other books in the Get to Know series.
I definitely recommend it to children so they can learn about Jesus.

The comprehension level of believing in someone that lived over 2,000 years ago is difficult. Nancy I. Sanders’ presents a detailed and mesmerizing account of Jesus in the Get to Know Series with such expert storytelling skills our young readers may not even realize they are learning (which is a good thing). Included in the same format as the other Get to Know Series a timeline, scripture, bible hero information, eyewitness accounts, did you know facts and word bank will have your young muses jumping at the chance to learn more facts with each turn of the page. A must have for Christian households and religious centers.
