Sujatha
303 books1,368 followersSujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.
As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

I had no idea what I was supposed to get out of this book; it was like a CRIME PATROL episode, and I'm glad it was only 90 pages long because I wouldn't have been able to stand the torment for another 200 or 300 pages. Seriously, what was the point of it all?

சுஜாதாவின் முதல் கதை. சுஜாதாவின் முக்கிய கதாநாயகர்கள் கணேஷ் - வசந்த் combo'வின் லாயர் கணேஷின் அறிமுக கதை. 1960 இல் வெளியானது. பரப்பர பக்கம் புரட்ட வைக்கும் புனைவு. Plus points ஏராளம்.
என்னடா கதைக்கு சம்பந்தம் இல்லாமல் டைரி குறிப்புகள் ஒவ்வொரு அத்தியாயத்தின் தொடக்கத்திலும் வருகிறதே என்று யோசித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தேன். அதையும் சரிக்கட்ட சுஜாதா தன் வழக்கத்தையோத்த signature ending கொடுத்துள்ளார். மற்ற கதைகளில் வசந்த் ஜொள்ளு வடிப்பார், கணேஷ் கடுமையாய் பரபரப்பார். இதில் வசந்த் வேலையும் கணேஷ்'க்கே :P
அடுத்து வசந்தின் அறிமுக கதையை படித்தே ஆக வேண்டும். :D
சுனந்தா மரணத்திற்கு சரியான தண்டனை "நிஜகுற்றவாளிக்கு".

The very first Sujatha novel is fairly impressive because of the unconventional approach to a mystery. Imagine you witness a murder and peek at the murderer in first chapter. Then the police suspect two people who visited the victim on the day and have a motive. Enter their lawyer (a more relaxed Ganesh) who saves the day and moves out of the scene.
Then another police officer finds out the actual mystery from the logical points raised by the defence lawyer.The book isn't exactly a cerebral mystery, more of a drama and yet it was a refreshingly different from the golden age of mystery books.
I also liked the actual courtroom discussion which got missing in the later and well known books. The hat-tip to perry mason was something I enjoyed. I wonder why he never wrote more courtroom novels given his heroes were actually lawyers.

நம்மக்கு பரிட்சயமான கதை களம், தமிழ் திரைப்பட உலகில் பல முறை வெளி வந்த கதைதான் ஆனாலும் சுஜாதா ஸ்டைலில். 1968ல் வெளி வந்த கதை ஆனாலும் இன்று படித்தாலும் fresh ஆன நடை. கதையோட்டத்தை கையாண்ட விதம் சிறப்பு. சுனந்தா என்று நிழலாடும் கதாபாத்திரத்தின் மனதுக்குள் சென்று அவள் என்ன யோசித்திருக்க வேண்டும் எதனால் என்று "psychoanalysis" 1968ல் இவர் செய்ததை பாராட்டியே ஆகவேண்டும்.

சுஜாதாவின் முதல் புத்தகம் இது ! கணேஷ் தோன்றும் முதல் நாவலும் இதுவே ! கணேஷ் மட்டும்தான். வசந்த் இல்லை. ஆனால் வசந்த் இல்லாத குறையும் இல்லை. கணேஷே வசந்த் மாதிரிதான் நடந்து கொள்கிறான்! :D அடுக்கு மாடி குடியிருப்பில் ஒருவன் விபரீத முறையில் இரண்டு கிடக்கிறான் , தவறான ஒருவனை கைது செய்கிறது போலீஸ் ! கணேஷ் தன்னுடைய அபார வாத தன்மையால் அவனை காப்பாற்றுகிறார் . உன்மயான குற்றவாளி யார் , சுனந்தா எதனால் தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டாள் ? என மிகவும் சுவாரசியமா செல்லும் நாவல் இது !

A good Debut thriller from my favourite Author Sujatha's introducing Ganesh, a brilliant lawyer (who continues his role in all Sujatha's thriller Saga). But he comes in the first half of the story and he does his role well.
A womaniser strangled to death in his own apartment and finding the killer is the story.
A simple, short, revenge thriller!

This was Sujatha's first published book and it read like one. A simply murder-mystery with some revelations being a bit convenient.
His trademark humour made it a better read. And clearly, his stories have improved from this one.

Come on, let us test our own morals by diving into page turning novel of Sujatha, 'நைலான் கயிறு'.
1965 இல் எழுதப்பட்ட இந்த நாவல் சுஜாதாவின் முதல் நாவலைப் போலவே இல்லை.A complete page turning crime novel. முதலில் பக்கங்களை திருப்பும் போது கொலை நடந்தவுடன் சுவாரஷ்யம் துவங்குகிறது. ஆங்காங்கே வந்து போகும் சுநந்தாவின் டைரி இன்னும் ஆர்வத்தைத் தூண்டுகிறது. இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் மாதவன் முதலில் வாசிப்பவர் கண்களுக்கு, Sherlock Holmes போல ஒளி அளிப்பதும், பின்னர் வக்கீல் கணேஷ் வந்து குட்டையைக் குழப்புவதுமாகக் கதை நகர்கிறது. கணேஷின் கோர்ட் வாதம் இஸ் சிம்ப்லி பிரில்லியண்ட் because of our Sherlock's nasty loop holes in rushing the hearing of the case to the court. பின்னர் வரும் Retire ஆக இருக்கும் அதிகாரி ராமநாதன் , நம்ம படையப்பா ரஜினி மாதிரி வயஷானாலும் Style illa but துப்பறியும் திறமை மாறாம வலம் வருவதைப் பார்க்க முடிகிறது. Yaar kolai seigiraan/seigiraal enru koorinaal swaarasiyam irukaadhu allava? ரயில் பயணம் தொடங்கும் போது படிக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். சுமார் இரண்டு மணி நேரம் கழித்து பெருமூச்சு விட்டேன்.வேறு விதமாக சத்தம் கேட்டது. சற்று, சுற்றி முற்றி பார்த்தால் Compartment இல் அனைவரும் உறங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். நான் கேட்ட சத்தம் வேறு ஒன்றும் இல்லை, உறங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்த மனிதர்களின் குரட்டைகளின் சங்கமம் தான் அது.

வாத்தியாரின் முதல் நாவல்.
பம்பாயில் நைலான் கயிற்றால் கழுத்தை நெரித்து ஒரு கொலை. கொலை செய்யப்பட்டவன் ஒரு வுமனைஸர். சில ருசுக்கள் கிடைக்கிறது. போலீஸ் தீர விசாரிக்காமல் தேவ் என்பவனை மாஜிஸ்திரேட் நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்கு விசாரணைக்கு கொண்டு வருகிறது.
தேவின் வக்கீல் நம்ம கணேஷ். அசால்ட் ஆறுமுகமாக கேஸை உடைக்கிறார். வாத்தியார் ஒரே வரியில் கணேஷை பிளேபாயாக வர்ணித்து விடுகிறார். பின்னாளில் குருவை விஞ்சிய சிஷ்யனாக வஸந்த் வருவான் என்பது வாத்தியாருக்கு தெரியவில்லை போலும்.
சில தினங்களில் ரிட்டையர் ஆக போகும் போலீஸ் அதிகாரி கொலையை மேல்விசாரணை செய்து கொலையாளி யார் என்று கண்டுபிடிக்க முயற்சி செய்கிறார்.

Nylon Rope is a whodunit by ace writer Sujatha Rangarajan published in the year 1971 (His first novel).
Within 115 pages the writer has given a good crime thriller which still gives a crisp read and keeps us engaged even after these many years.
Lookout for the pages that appears in random pages in the middle of the novel containing handwritten letters of a character that makes you feel irrelevant to where the story is going but see later how the knots are tied to Sujatha's signature ending.

The moment I come to conclusion that Indian authors are not worthy of writing.... My whole house of cards gets shattered by one book... This time it was "nylon rope"...
Translated version of Nylon Kayiru gives you package of emotions in just 100 pages. That's the skill of author, I admire. You get baffled, get anxious, feel alleviated, feel at ease and then suddenly outraged.... Oh God (if there is any), I may be a changed man after this book... I'm sure if it!!! (Though the change may be temporary... Haha)

Superb story...well written :) Thrilling till the end..Never dyu get the feel that this is the first book of Sujatha.
Really, he is a genius and a very good story teller!!!!:D

நைலான் கயிறு - சுஜாதாவின் முதல் நாவல்.
சமீபத்தில் இதன் மறுபதிப்பு காப்பி ஒன்று கிடைத்தது. அதன் முன்னுரையில் சுஜாதா, "இந்தக் கதையின் அமைப்பில் இப்போது இதை நோக்கும் போது பல திருத்தங்கள் செய்யலாம் எனத் தோன்றுகிறது. செய்யவில்லை. காரணம் இதை எழுதும்போது இருந்த என் இளமையும் தமிழில் புதியதாக பல முயற்சிகள் வசன நடையில் செய்து பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்கிற ஆர்வமும் இப்போது எனக்கு இல்லை" என்று எழுதியிருந்தார்.
இந்த புத்தகத்தை பல வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு எப்போதோ படித்திருக்கிறேன். கணேஷ்-வசந்த் கதைகளுக்கு அஸ்திவாரமாக கணேஷே கணேஷாகவும் வசந்தாகவும் வந்த முதல் கதை இது. ஒரு பாஸ்ட்-பேஸ்ட் திரில்லர். அப்போது அதை ஒரு பேஜ் டர்னராக மட்டுமே ரசித்துப் படித்த ஞாபகம். இந்த முன்னுரையை படித்ததும் இதை சுஜாதா கூறிய "வசன நடையில் புது முயற்சி" என்கிற பெர்ஸ்பெக்ட்டிவில் ஒரு முறை படிக்கலாம் என்று படிக்கத் தொடங்கினேன்.
கதையின் தொடக்கத்தில் ஒரு கொலை, அதன் இன்வெஸ்டிகேஷுனை சுற்றி படு வேகமாக நகரும் கதை என்று ஆரம்பித்த பத்து வரிகளிலேயே கதை சூடு பிடிக்கத்தொடங்கி விடும். மும்பையில் ஒரு வீட்டின் ஐந்தாவது மாடியில் வசிக்கும் கிருஷ்ணனை கொல்ல வருகிறான் கொலைகாரன் "மிஸ்டர் x". இந்த சேஸ் சீனில் நமது ஹார்ட் ரேட்டை எழுத்துகளை வைத்தே ஏற்றும் விதம் அபாரம். குறிப்பாக, கொலைகாரன் கிருஷ்ணனின் வீட்டிற்கு வந்து விடுகிறான். லிப்ட்டில் ஏறி 6-ஐ அழுத்தினான். பின் அருகில் இருந்த மாடிப்படிகளில் மெதுவாக ஐந்தாவது மாடிக்கு

Sujatha is widely known for his unique style of writing and presenting the crime thrillers in a crisp and very engaging manner. It is so refreshing to see his books being translated in English and thanks to Sugandhi Krishmachari for the same. Even though it was a translated book, the essence of the book was not lost at all, the credits should completely go to the translator for the same.
Hats off to Sujatha, the way the story unravels no one can predict how the story goes and keeps us the readers very much intriguing to know what will happen next. The best part of his writings is his simplicity in the language in which he conveys such an intense message.
A must read for all book lovers of short stories and Indian authors.

My first by the author and am regretting reading this in English. Perhaps the original would have been more interesting...
The book started really well and had some nice comic moments as well but the plot was too simple and too pat for words. Having heard a lot about the author, it is possible that my expectations were sky high and ergo the disappointment but I don’t think it is as simple an explanation as that.
Will definitely read more of the author before I make a final assessment. Of course, those will be in Tamil for sure.

மிகவும் விறுவிறுப்பான நாவல் அதுவும் ராமநாதன் entry பிறகு கதை நகர்வதே தெரியவில்லை. Excellent ஆன நாவல் திரும்பவும் சுஜாதாவின் எழுத்து திரன் பிரமிக்க வைத்துவிட்டது.

சுஜாதாவின் வசனங்களை நாம் பல தமிழ்த்திரைப்படங்களில் கேட்டு இரசித்திருக்கிறோம். அவரின் எழுத்து நடை மற்ற எழுத்தாளர்களை விட முற்றிலும் வேறானது என்பதை நான் கண்டு சொல்ல வேண்டுமா என்ன? புத்தகம் படிப்பவர்கள், படிக்கும் வரிகளை மனத்தில் காட்சியாக உருவம் கொள்ளச் செய்வர். ஆனால் சுஜாதாவின் எழுத்திற்கு அவரே உருவம் கொடுத்திருப்பார். படிப்பவரின் எந்த முயற்சியும் இன்றி எழுத்துக்கள் இயல்பாக உருவம் கொண்டு எழுந்து நிற்கும். எடுத்துக் காட்டாக "மாடிப் படியில் இறங்கினான்" என்பதை அவர்,

கொலைகாரனைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க ஆவலோடு இருக்கும் காவல் துறை கண்காணிப்பாளர், கொலைகாரனிடம் - "செஸ் ஆட்டத்தில் வெற்றி கண்டவன் அவனிடம் ��ோற்றவனுடன் நடந்த ஆட்டத்தை விமரிசனம் செய்வது நம் சம்பாஷணை" என்று கூறும் பொழுது, இவர்கள் இருவரில் வென்றவன் யார் தோற்றவன் யார் என்பதைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க எனக்குச் சில மணித்துளிகள் தேவைப்பட்டன.
"நண்பர், உங்கள் *தந்தி* அரை மணிக்கு *முந்தி* தான் வந்தது என்றார் தற்செயலான எதுகையில்" என்ற இயல்பான வரியில் கொலைக்கதையின் இடையில் இலக்கணம் பேசுகிறார் சுஜாதா.

"சிவப்பு விளக்கு எரிகிறது. அதிகம் ட்ராபிக் இல்லாதபோது, போலீஸ்காரன் இல்லாதபோது சிவப்பு விளக்கை மீறுவதில்லையா?" என்று மக்கள் குற்றவுணர்வின்றி செய்யும் அன்றாட வழக்கத்தை அடிக்கோடிட்டுக் காட்டுகிறார். 1968ல் எழுதிய அந்த வரியை இன்று படிக்கையில், அன்றும் மதித்ததில்லை இன்றும் மதிப்பதில்லை என்றும் நாம் இவ்விதியை மதிக்கப்போவதில்லையா என்ற கேள்வி எழுகிறது.
"கணேஷ், நீ வரிகளுக்கு நடுவில் படிக்கிறாய்" என்ற வரி மீண்டும் மீண்டும் படிக்க வைத்தது. ஆனால் நூலில் சில இடங்களில் சுஜாதா வரிகளுக்கு இடையில் எழுதுகிறார். அதென்ன வரிகளுக்கு இடையில் எழுதுவது என்று கேட்கிறீர்களா? நான் சொல்லமாட்டேன். அதைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள நூலைப் படியுங்கள்.

Nylon Rope by Sujatha begins as a seemingly straightforward murder. Krishnan, a man in his thirties is strangled with a nylon rope by J, who seems to be a known acquaintance.
But what’s the motive? Here’s where the book actually begins. Dev is falsely accused and his fate is nearly sealed by weak circumstantial evidence and institutional indifference. However, thanks to his suave defense attorney, Ganesh, he escapes an unfair verdict.
Then there’s Ramanathan, Superintendent of Police. On the brink of retirement, Ramanathan takes up the case with gusto and his integrity, persistence, and near-obsessive attention to detail form the emotional core of the novel.
The narrative’s rhythm is punctuated by apparently unrelated excerpts from a teenage girl’s diary. These diary entries begin as innocuous fragments of her musings and complaints but gain relevance soon. Sujatha aligns the stories like a puzzle slowly coalescing, each piece mundane until it finds its place.
Sujatha, whose real name is S. Rangarajan, comes from a background in science and engineering, which shows in his analytical reasoning in plot structure, and in the characters’ thinking. Published in 1968, the book offers a fascinating blend of psychological intrigue and procedural sharpness. Sujatha wrote like a scientist, observed like a novelist, and thought like a detective.
The translation was adequate but lacked the charm of some of the Ponniyin Selvan translations I’d read.
Nevertheless, Sujatha’s charm persisted and I would love to read another of his mysteries.

A GOOD CRIME THRILLER THAT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME!
I picked this novel only when I found out that it was Sujatha’s debut novel written in late 60’s and I thought why I wouldn’t read it to know how Sujatha’s writing had been during his formative years as a novelist. I would say that with his debut novel “Nylon Kayiru” he had tried to bring about a big change in novel writing. The story was written in a very common voice unlike its contemporaries. In my knowledge, Sujatha was one of the first persons to use catchy english words and phrases in a Tamil novel breaking the stereotype.
The plot is super simple. “Nylon Kayiru” is a crime thriller which revolves around the investigation of the murder of one Krishnan, a womaniser. The police, being misled, falsely implicates an innocent for whom Ganesh, a brilliant lawyer manages to get an acquittal on the score of want of evidence. Subsequently, a senior police officer, who’s in the evening of his retirement, takes up the case to unfurl the mystery for his professional satisfaction. Whether he nabbed the killer, what was the motive behind the crime and what ensued thereafter is the rest of the story. For the modern reader, this novel may seem quite simple but I presume that for the readers of sixties and seventies it must have made a very suspenseful crime thriller.
Postscript: This is the first novel in which the famous Ganesh appeared. Hence, this novel deserves to be read for merely this reason, if not for others.

This being the first novel of sujatha sir written way back in 1968, it requires some contextual knowledge and settings around the time to understand the book better. Story is about a womanizer being murdered, a police office on the last days of his work want satisfaction in finding the actual killer. What happens does the police man find the person and how does it unfold is the climax.
Glimpses of sujatha's future writing could be seen in this book. Ganesh looks more like vasanth in this book, the inspector character seems to be more like future ganesh. You can understand the change in sujatha sir's writing graph if you read this book. Even though this is his first book, he could bring the gripping feeling that he is a master.
I would say the story line is very weak compared to other books of him. The explanation and intelligence that he provides for small things is missing in this book. At times the clarity of presentation was missing. If you are sujatha's fan and would like to see his initial writing, to understand the difference of flow that sujatha as a writer could gain in future, then the book is for you. If not you can ignore it.

என் அபிமான எழுத்தாளர் சுஜாதாவின் முதல் நாவல். குமுதம் வார இதழில் தொடர்கதையாக வந்தது. இந்த நாவலுக்கு அவர் வைத்த பெயர் 'சீட்டு மாளிகை'. குமுதம் ஆசிரியர் நைலான் கயிறு என்று பெயர் வைத்தார். மர்மமாக கொலைசெய்யப்பட்டு இருக்கிறார் ஒரு நபர். சந்தேகத்தின் அடிப்படையில் ஒருவரைக் கைது செய்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் சரியான சாட்சி இல்லாததால் விடுதலை செய்கிறார்கள். ஓய்வு பெறப்போகும் காவல் துறை அதிகாரி ஒருவர் உண்மையான கொலையாளியை கண்டுபிடிப்பதே கதை. Really enjoyed this one. Proper classic whodunnit, where pulling one thread keeps leading to another one. Particularly enjoyed the prose and the humor on display.

Good basic investigation story
The author really put in some effort to learn and implement lots of medical terms. It's a one-shot go story. I liked the way the story progresses seamlessly; I didn't feel any disconnect or missing parts. Especially, I enjoyed the train scene and how the protagonist's thoughts are shaped by others' conversations.

A Racy & Engrossing Thriller !
Apparently, this happens to be the first published novel of Sujatha, one my most loved authors. This was published in 1970's and still hooks up the reader, thanks to the layered story narration & casual conversation style.
