Full disclosure, I DNF'd this book at 85% NOT because it wasn't good but because I lost interest.

Here's the deal, I can usually finish a book of this length in less than 2 days. I am currently on day 4 and I literally have no desire to finish it. With that said, you are probably like bitch if you didn't finish it, how you gonna give it 3 stars?!?!

Let me explain, this book started out very good. I was super excited about the action, the strong female leads, the terminator robots, the the theme of overthrowing your oppressors. There were a lot of good moments. I got the following vibes - Woman King, Linda Hamilton aka Sara Connor, and John Wick BADASSNESS.

I thought the introduction of a sadist female villain was a unique choice as well. But things got weird and lost and confusing. Our FMC is annoying, the obsession with tit talk is getting old, the emotional relationship between the FMC and her sisters is seriously lacking, and now our FMC has been forced to undergo a Bionic Woman makeover with a Kim K ass.

I just can't ya'll. I never thought I'd say this but I need this book to be longer so that the author can fill in the gaps and do better transitions. Half the time I don't know how our girl got from Point A to Point B.

Three stars for me means it's a good book. I do believe this has a lot of good elements. But I can't continue myself to read this as my ADD can't keep up with all that is going on.

The books starts out a bit confusing and slow, but if you can keep going for about 4 chapters, you gain a ton of understanding of the main character: Aida & even her history with her mother and sisters.


The writing is so vivid. The story is so good & I just love how this book is about reclaiming your power through the true magic (Ns) within you. I love how relatable the characters are; their fight to do more then just exist. Aida is more than just a survivor.

This book made me not want to read anymore - at all, & I felt like I couldn't "DNF "it because it was an ARC from NetGalley.

Ultimately, I had to stop reading about 38% of the way in.
I found it hard to connect with the story being told even though it focused on very important subject matters - racism, female empowerment, family dynamics, to name a few.

I enjoy dystopian/anarchistic & horror/thriller writing for the most part, but the interesting concepts created by the author just did not hit or flow in any way.

This is set an an alternate universe very different but not quite so different from our own. They have special powers and abilities in these three girls who are also triplets and trained warriors especially the oldest girl Aida. They get caught and sold like chattel they’re bought by this woman who is very rich and after Aida breaks a vase while cleaning up a man’s office after he made her and her sister dress in sleazy dresses when her younger sister takes the blame Aida is then forced to watch as the woman bash’s her sisters head in. Unfortunately this is just the beginning of Aida‘s nightmare and although she is waiting for the chance to escape until she does she will be working very closely with the rich lady Irma. Will she ever see her other sister again more important than that Lucy ever see home again? I thought in the beginning of this book it was going to be really good but they had special abilities and I couldn’t wait to see how that played out when she was made a slave unfortunately once she gets caught that’s pretty much always say not only that I really am getting tired of these books where are these horrible characters say the most terrible things in this book there was one scene where Irma the rich lady is telling off people of her staff telling them they should use common sense and she understands because they’re people very rebellious and she tells them all the stuff about they shouldn’t fight the system because they’re not going to win but she’s telling them this as a preamble to her security guards shooting them to death I gave it three stars cause far as good versus evil this was a pretty good story but I was just let down by Aida who had all these special abilities she was a warrior none of that was put to use I just didn’t get it but it was worth getting through because I did enjoy the last third of the book and I do think for those who like good versus evil alternate universe stories you’re probably will totally enjoyed this book for the most part I did there were just some things I had questions about an other things I’m just getting tired of seeing in Books. I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

I'm really torn about this book. I'm not sure what I was expecting when the first line of the description, and honestly the part that sold me, called it Attack on Titan meets Django Unchained.

I enjoy a historical novel that can blend modern things seamlessly without reading as terribly anachronistic. This managed to do that a little more than half the time. Aida was a sympathetic and empowered view into a world that echoes the past in some of the most heart wrenching ways.

Definitely check those trigger warnings. It's a very hard read at times. Oddly, the thing that bothered me the most is how many "big breasted" there were and the language used to describe them. It was dehumanizing in a way that felt intentional but overdone.

The concept was pretty unique, and I agree that it's thought provoking. The plot seemed confused on what it wanted to be. This is genuinely not a bad book by any means, but I have to say it just wasn't for me. I would still recommend it to anyone who is interested in the social issues that are covered.

What did I Just Read?

When I read the blurb for this book, I was under the impression that it would be about a dystopian society. I figured it might be a bit disturbing. I was not ready. Some parts of the book were just downright outrageous. Also, I'm not sure what was going on with the weird large boob obsession, but it felt unnecessary. There were just a lot of parts that made me uncomfortable. I wish I had more to share about the book. Truly, I'm glad it's over.

The story came out with a lot of description of the environment and people. One thing I’ve not been a fan of in the past is books that jump from past to present, but this book has the chapters from the past clearly labeled which I valued.

An interesting take on classism, racism with a mix of historical fiction and science fiction. This was not the type of book I’d normally pick up but I am glad I did. Overall I do think it was a good book, although the end left me wanting to know a bit more.

I really wanted to like this book, but it did not work for me. Throughout the book, there were strange moments that did not flow at all and took me completely out of the story. One of these was the weird obsession with boobs... There was also a sense of villainization of gay people that I found disappointing. Though I appreciate the themes and important topics this book touches on, it didn't seem to be executed in a way that made sense to me, and I think more world building would have helped. In spite of that, there was some beautiful writing and prose that I wanted to read more of.

This book is very interesting and has many concepts that are very unique to explore. In the first few chapters, you are very confused and have no idea what’s going in, which is normal in a sci-fi/fantasy book, you’re introducing the world, the characters and the conflict. My problem with this one in particular was that it doesn’t explain things that well and you have to figure it out by yourself. Also, there are too many things happening at once, the dialogue is kind of funky and it you can’t tell who is talking to who or why. The conversations are pretty weird and strange. I do understand that the way the world being colonized by the Mycelans is very different ethics, beliefs and structure but still, I was also very confused because I felt like we didn’t understand what was going on with them and their reasoning.

I do feel like if you want to read this book, be mindful that there are many, and I mean MANY scenes where there is torture, very descriptive explicit scenes and, rude vocabulary, racism, slavery, abuse, gaslighting, violence, mistreatment of women and children, etc etc. For example, many “big breasted women” were hurt in inexplicable ways by their “master” who is a sadistic animal. Even though this is very disturbing, it shows the reality of how many people who have undergone slavery and torture, especially women, have been treated and how horrifying it truly is. I appreciate that the author took into explaining and giving details about the conditions of the places they live in and how much it can change a person in this situation.

I didn’t love our main character but, I do understand that her mother puts a lot of pressure on her and how that affects the way she has to lead her life, her beliefs, and how she views the world; also, how she treats her younger siblings. Her mother is a big influence on her and her sisters (Zala and Yona) but, being the oldest, the pressure is way worse and there is more at stake. I did like how they portrayed how much a parent can affect their children with how they view the world and how they treat them. Also, I like how the main character is exploring the world and her new reality as a slave (and why she is) through other characters and their stories. There is so much she doesn’t know about the world and the enemy. I thought she was gonna use her power more, and that we were gonna see her become a bad bitch but, we didn’t really see that much of her ability; I do hope we see more in the future and also, her sisters.
