When there’s no safe place to hide you on Earth, witness protection sends you to another planet.

Tori
That’s how divorcing a crime boss landed me across the galaxy. Unlike the other women here, I don’t want to marry one of the…okay, fine—gorgeous—Mitran males. After I’m called to testify at my ex’s trial, I’m getting back my life on Earth. But Ruzak, the aloof warlord who holds himself apart from the throng of males hoping for a bride, needs my help identifying a spy who may not be as human as she appears. One Ruzak is much more interesting than he appears.

Ruzak
In exchange for breeding females from Earth, we must allow some humans to stay on Mitra who are not here to find a mate. It’s a small price to pay to give our struggling population a chance to survive. Tori is spitting mad to be here, but the fact that she isn’t here to find love makes her an ideal choice to find the Dessican spy I know is in our midst. Tori sparks my long-dormant desires, but falling for her comes with a I will have to let her go, no matter how fiercely I wish to claim her.

My books have consent and HEAs, but no cliffhangers or cheating. Thank you for reading and enjoy!

🛡️ Audiobook Review: Ruzak’s Claim

Series: Mitran Warlord Protectors
Genre: Science Fiction Romance
Narrators: Dani California and Eric Michael Summerer.

🦸🏼‍♀️ Heroine Spotlight: Tori (a.k.a. Riley)

Tori thought she’d married a successful businessman. Instead, she’d unknowingly tied herself to an interplanetary crime lord. When she discovered the truth, she didn’t hesitate—divorce, testify, survive. But survival came at a cost: her ex tried to have her killed, and Earth was no longer safe. Enter witness protection… galactic edition. Tori is shipped to Mitra, a distant planet where she’s the only woman who doesn’t speak the native language, still wearing the blood-stained suit from the day her life imploded. Unlike the other women aboard—who came seeking mates—Tori’s mission is silence and survival. She’s meant to return to Earth for the trial, but until then, she must blend in and stay hidden.

🦸🏻‍♂️ Hero Spotlight: Ruzak

Ruzak is a Mitran warlord with a city to protect and a race on the brink of extinction. Forty-eight human women arrive, each potentially a lifeline—or a threat. One is different. One is temporary. One unsettles him. Ruzak instantly senses that Tori is the one in need of protection, and though he’s the only Mitran with a translator, he tries to keep his distance. But when his second-in-command struggles to communicate with her, Tori demands that Ruzak step in. Their connection begins not with sparks, but with necessity—and tension.

📃 Plot Pulse

Mitra doesn’t use universal translators, and Tori’s crash-course in survival didn’t include language lessons. While the other women had six months of cultural immersion, Tori was a last-minute addition—shell-shocked, unprepared, and emotionally raw. Ruzak, intrigued yet cautious, delegates her care until communication barriers force him to engage directly. Their dynamic is built on friction, guarded vulnerability, and the slow unraveling of secrets. Meanwhile, the looming threat of a Descant spy among the women adds a layer of suspense that keeps the stakes high.

💘 What Hit Home

• 🌍 The world-building was immersive, with rich detail about Mitran society and its eight cities.
• 🛡️ The witness protection twist was refreshing—no abduction trope here, just a heroine with agency and grit.
• 🕵️‍♀️ The spy subplot added intrigue and delivered a satisfying surprise.

🧐 What Fell Flat

• 💔 The chemistry between Tori and Ruzak felt muted. Their emotional connection never quite ignited, which made the romance arc feel more functional than fiery.

🎧 Narration Notes

Told in dual POVs with dual narration, the audiobook features Dani California and Eric Michael Summerer.

• 🎙️ Dani California’s voice is pleasant, though her delivery leans more “reading aloud” than “immersive performance.”
• 🎧 Eric Michael Summerer brings depth and clarity, with expressive pacing that adds weight to Ruzak’s chapters. He was the standout for me.

📝 Final Takeaway

A sci-fi romance with a unique premise, solid world-building, and a heroine who refuses to be a victim. While the emotional payoff between the leads didn’t fully land, the political tension and survival stakes kept me invested. If you’re looking for a futuristic twist on witness protection with a side of alien diplomacy, this one’s worth a listen.

Quickish Review

I really enjoyed the Heveian series, so I dove into this book head first. It just left me feeling meh but I’ll tell you why.

The bones of a good story are here, the characters had promise and I was ready to suspend disbelief. But the FMC is a bit too passive in her own journey, and worse the romantic chemistry was a bit off from the beginning. The ILUs seemed to come fairly quickly, only to be trashed just as quickly in favor of the “mystery” spy plot, which wasn’t a mystery. It’s painfully obvious from the beginning who it was.

So that plot didn’t work for me, and the MMC essentially talking about their love in the past tense almost immediately after the accusations came in? Big turnoff for me. There’s an attempt to explain why he did, but by then I was over him. The big save from characters that I actually liked also fell flat if only because it was so shoehorned in.

In the end, this series didn’t have as strong a start as the last, so while I’ll probably grab the next book, this one is only ok at best for me.

This was very instalove and the pacing of everything was a little too fast in my opinion.

I wanted them to know each other better or just have more plot before the conflict at the end, so it was just ok for me. Perhaps I’ll read the rest to see if the series gets more complex as it goes!

I’m gonna have to say I love alien romance. They are trope-y and similar most of the time, so I’m not expecting the next great American novel.
And i REALLY liked the premise of this book. I mean who wouldn’t? A woman on the run from her ex husband, spirited away the same day he hired a hit man to kill her? Yes!
But this book should have been twice as long minimum.
We needed to develop the relationship between the two MCs. She literally just divorced her mob boss ex. As in LITERALLY the day she came to this planet.
Was she abused or wasn’t she? Dialogue makes her out of traumatized, but she doesn’t act traumatized. She acts passive. Which is a trauma response I suppose, but she was already supposed to have been spying on her husband and feeding info to the cops. Passive women don’t do that. That takes strength and will and bravery. None of which she really displayed any of.
She doesn’t know him. Then is in love with him after 2 conversations and a dance.
He loves her, never felt anything like this, she’s his forever, she will never be apart from him again. Until five minutes later when, without any proof he actually seen with his own eyes, he’s told she is the spy and he lets them drag her out of his bed, naked! No fight, no demand to even see the proof himself. Nothing. Just a “I hope not or I’ll kill you”. And you want me to believe this is better than the ex husband who also tried to kill her for betraying him???
Only difference being she ACTUALLY betrayed her ex, so he actually had a legitimate reason? (Do I read too many mafia romances? No you can never read too many lol).
So she left a man who treated her badly and didn’t love her. Who, from her own words, told her he would protect her and then discarded her, only to end up with an alien who did the EXACT SAME THING? Ugh. No. I read these books because I want to experience romance with a man who burns the world down for you. Who would literally off someone for just looking at you wrong (when he immediately said he was gonna ship the bitchy girl home? YES, that is the energy we like!). Not to have a man disappoint me like so many in my own life have.
Didn’t even bother to read the rest but I’ll take a guess that the actual spy is Lisa and hmmmm she’s probably being controlled somehow? Thats why she gets the headaches? Feel free to tell me if I’m right in the comments lol (a cool plot twist would be for the bitchy one to be the spy and Lisa to just have a migraine condition that some hunky alien fixes with his magic dick)

Read it for the words

I own other books by this author but must not have read them yet so I was surprised by how this read. The story was short, the plot has been done before but the book is not a formula book. Normally I only highlight names and descriptions in order to keep them straight in my mind. Occasionally I'll highlight an odd sentence but here I really enjoyed how many of the scenes were described. The principal's sex scenes followed the traditional path that you always get, one of my sons does a funny parody on it. The difference is you aren't getting a blow by blow discretion with the same-day old clench sentences. Instead you almost get poetry describing the same experience and you can see the bounding process that the characters are experiencing. What they're doing almost doesn't matter. Quite a few other kinds of scenes do the same. It made me experience them differently. Real life is always unique not formulaic and for the most part neither are her scenes or her characters.

Tori is a strong woman that has to get out from under her mafia husband. He is set on ending her life and she needs to stay alive long enough to at least testify at court against him.
In the time when aliens are in space protection from bad ppl means leaving earth till it’s time to testify. Going to an alien planet where you don’t even know the language makes hiding out with a group of women sent to the planet harder than just hiding out.
Ruzak is the leader and it’s his job to protect his people. That includes the new woman from earth sent to hopefully marry his males. They need to preserve their people and breathe new life into their dying race.
He didn’t want to take any woman as his but is it going against his word if she wasn’t meant to be there in the first place? What will happen when his female is being accused of killing an elder and killing this chance his people have at gaining mates?

This book had everything that I love and adore about Ella Blake's writing. From unique worldbuilding and an interesting alien culture to an authentic romance with some sizzlin' spice, I seriously could not put this book down! Tori and Ruzak's bond had a fated mates feel to it. While their connection is strong, trouble from the past and present shakes things up quite a bit. I had a feeling that the bad person was the spy, but was not expecting the vicious twist in all of this. At the end of the day, I'm glad that Ruzak listened to his heart and intuition through it all. This is all to say, I've already downloaded book two to devour. If you're looking for an alien romance with some romance, spice, FMC on the run, some action and an MMC that will chase the stars for his mate, then this is the book for you!

DNF 68% Cheesy, implausible, and formulaic.

By about 30 - 40% I was skimming, A LOT. It wasn’t bad, just very predictable and so formulaic, that I was bored.

Though, if I wasn’t so familiar with the genre, it’s probable I would have enjoyed the beginning more.
But this isn’t an older book, or a first for the author, so it was very disappointing that they would just rehash something done a thousand times already.

Once I reached the point where the MMC talks in the past tense about how he trusted, believed, and loved her (and only hours after he first told her all of this, and they had, had sex…), I was done.

He turned on her so quickly!
I went and looked at other reviews and saw it only got worse.
Not for me.

Technically it’s well written.
Character, plausibility, and plot wise though, hard fail.
Others have already appropriately detailed how and why.

Ruzak’s Claim surprised me in the best way, it’s a sci-fi romance that balances action, intrigue, and steamy tension perfectly.

I loved the setup: witness protection that literally blasts the heroine off to another planet, where she has to navigate a world of alien politics and power plays.

Tori’s sharp wit and refusal to play the typical “earth woman looking for a mate” trope made her instantly relatable and refreshing.

Ruzak, the aloof warlord, had just the right mix of mystery and vulnerability. Their dynamic is full of slow-burning sparks, but also real teamwork as they unravel the spy mystery. The blend of suspense and romance kept me flipping pages late into the night.

The story didn’t just rely on passion, the espionage subplot gave it real stakes and depth.

If you like your romance with a side of galactic adventure , Ruzak’s Claim is definitely worth the ride.

Heavier than I thought

I thought this would be a light read, but it ended up being darker than I had thought.

Tori was rushed off the planet to hide from her ex-husband, an intergalactic arms dealer and murderer. She had agreed to testify against him, so he put a hit out on her. The ship was full of women, headed to a planet to be mates with the aliens there.

Ruzak is the warlord of his territory. He knows Tori is not part of the mating program, but he's intrigued by her.

Without giving any spoilers, I was very disappointed with Ruzak when he believed she did something that she didn't do. It might have been just for a little while, but it still irked me. That being said, it was a very good book.

I was so excited for the first book in this new series. I loved the Hevians and now we get a look at the Mitrans! Tori is sent to Mitran as a part of Witness Protection to keep her safe until she testifies against her crime lord ex-husband. The Warlord catches her eye at the same time he sees her. There is an immediate attraction and they are helpless to resist each other.
That starts a chain of events that are full of love, lust and betrayal. With a beloved couple popping in from the other series to basically save the day, it was a great read. I loved the world building and the characters. Ella Blake, I love you!

Going from adoring your husband, to finding out he's a very dangerous arms dealer and more, divorcing said husband and going into witness protection is enough to mess anyone up. But when witness protection takes you to another planet - wow. This is what Tori is going thru.
Then we meet Warlord Ruzak and his people. There are very few Mitran females left and the need for compatible women is the start of the alien bride program with Earth. The first ship arrives with possible brides and he sees Tori.
With wonderful characters Ella brings this tale to life with her plot twists, danger, intrigue, lies and love. And I do love a HEA.

Tori and Ruzak
This story is very entretaining and vere fast reading. I liked how we get a general description off the past events and then the story unfolds in the alien world. The alien world seems like paradise and I would love to visita. Tori is running from her psyco/ arms dealer/ mobster/ intergalactic bad guy, ex husband but not all is as safe as it looks and we get there soon. Ruzak is a warlord and he completly forgets he doesn't want a human female the moment he sees Tori. They are so cute together.

Not great

It was alright. I liked the hevian stories better.

I didn't like how he didn't believe her. He said he did but his actions and how he kept saying stuff in past tense didn't show it.

Also why would someone who was supposedly a spy keep a journal. Where would she have gotten these journals since she came with nothing.

Also how did his grandfather and the guard get tricked into thinking someone was their mate? Aren't mates supposed to be something their "soul" recognizes immediately.

Ruzak’s Claim

Ruzak’s claim starts where we left off with the Hevians. Ruzak is the warlord of the mitrains and is head of the program to bring women to his planet from earth.

I really wanted to like this story but there was a big disconnect in the relationship with the MC’s. I just wasn’t convinced they loved each other and then the moment she is blamed for something he just lets them take her away and doesn’t believe her at first. The narration was great as always though.

WOW! What a ride! This is the first Warlord of Mitra book and it is excellent! Tori is on Mitra not to find a mate but to hide until she can testify against her ex-husband. Ruzak is not interested or planning on taking a mate..well until he meets Tori. This story is action packed with the right amount of heat. There is some mystery and a ton of action. There is love and anger and even a psychopath which really heats things up. The world building is outstanding! The characters are so real and so clearly written. The story is amazing!! I loved it!

This book was a great read! I loved Ruzak; he was caring, observant, and an all-around great alien. I know I would have loved having him around, too. And, Tori, she was a strong, resourceful, and willful person. To say this book was exciting, entertaining, romantic, and spicy is just some of it. I blasted through this book and loved every minute of it. This was a first read for me of Blake's writings, and it won't be the last. I highly recommend this book!

I was waiting for this story to come out when I first met them in one of the Heveian's stories. Ruzak was like a magnet who couldn't help but be attracted to Riley/Tori. These two certainly made me feel many emotions, but relief was most pronounced when the danger passed. I'd say Ruzak is a great warlord. I couldn't fault him for his actions; I admired him for the things he did and was willing to do to save his mate.

2 & 1/2 stars rounded up.
The story had potential to be really good, but there were so many plot holes & places that were rushed, & then it was insta-love after seeing each other 3 or 4 times for short periods of time, that it hurt the story overall. This definitely read like a Novella (though Amazon says it’s 218 pages), by not enough character development, not enough of the plot holes filled, not much world building…definitely won’t continue with the series…

Meh

Strangers to in love after meeting maybe half a dozen times? No, obviously not, because that love became past tense the moment she was accused of crimes. She didn't even get mad at him over it. He never had to grovel. She gave up when things looked bleak, then just went along with things when he changed his mind. The sex was meh, the villain was cartoonish, and every single character was an impulsive idiot.

Great start to a new series

I couldn't wait to hear Ruzak's story and it did not disappoint. Poor Tori!! She really had a rough time and it almost undermined the whole mate program. Ruzak's a great character and getting to have Dani and Wulfrex join the story was very cool too. I love Wulfrex and I'm all for guest appearances in continuing stories. Very surprising who the actual mastermind was, although it shouldn't have been. Nicely done.

There she meets Ruzak the local Warload. He realizes that she is his fated mate. Can he protect her when she is arrested for murder. Good steamy story. HEA.

Ruzak’s Claim is the first book in the Mitran Protectors series. Human Tori is in the witness protection program and is sent to Mitra under the disguise of a Bride exchange program. Ruzak is the Warlord of Mitra, falls instantly for his fated mate while trying to find a spy. I enjoyed this fast paced fated mates, he-falls-first sci-fi romance. I can't wait to read more of these Mitrans.

This charming read had me from Chapter One! The chemistry between Tori and Ruzak is exactly what makes this book so special. The world building is solid and I can’t wait for the next book in this series. This series is fresh and right out of the box gets you hooked. I would like to have had a little more story because it ended to soon for me. ❤️❤️

Easy to read

I had a hard time empathizing with Tori. This didn't come across as domestic abuse. More like she knowingly married a ruthless man. than she was approached by the authorities. Than she instantly fell for the next one. Yes she was set up. Yes the first one was ruthless. I just didn't like her much.

A unique premise for the heroine in a "Mars needs women" trope! A fun start to a new series, and I was able to enjoy it without having read the series this is spun off from. The contrast between "primitive" culture and technology was interesting and I look forward to reading what's going on in the other Thrails (cities) where the human delegates were sent.

Witness protection, or not?

She goes to the planet expected a safe haven until she has to go back to earth to testify.
Unfortunately it was not as safe as she hoped.
Personally I enjoyed the story. There are a few no way moments. Ignored it and just enjoyed the break from my real life.

I usually love and recommend her books

This story was choppy, glossed over introducing the new world and the plot was painful to read after 50%, everyone was so stupid not seeing what was going on. I've seen other reviews that say the other books in series are better so I'll try the next one, every author can have a one off!

GREAT SPINOFF!

The Mitran were introduced in Craving the Heveian series.
Ruzak was the main contact with the Renegade crew. When he needed help he turned to 2 of that crew, Wulfrex and Dani!

This can be read with first series, I think it’s important for you to know the bigger picture first. If not the whole series definitely the last book.
