Ever wondered what goes on while you're asleep? Find out in this fun flap book, exploring a night time world in a city, out in the coutryside, in a desert, under the sea and on an African savannah. From truck drivers delivering your morning milk and bakers preparing pastries, to sharks hunting in a pitch black ocean, you'll be amazed at all the people and animals that are awake through the night.
Emily Bone grew up among the rolling hills of Hampshire, writing stories about the ants and birds in her garden. After studying English at Cambridge, she found her dream job at Usborne in 2007. Since then, she's written about many weird and wonderful creatures, along with books on space, fashion and food.
This gorgeous lift the flap book caught my eye at the library mainly because of the beautiful art on the cover, in particular the owl as I love owls! On opening it I discovered it was so full of flaps to lift on the pages that I just had to borrow it to read with my two grandchildren (age almost 4 and 18 months).
Look Inside Night Time is all about what goes on at nighttime when everyone is tucked up in bed. It’s starts with ‘as the sun goes down’ which shows a double page of people getting ready for bed at home surrounded by a forest and a big tree with the owl peering out of the tree trunk. There are so many flaps to look under that it kept my eldest grandchild engaged throughout the entire book. My younger grandchild enjoyed the flaps but the detailed illustrations didn’t quite engage him so much. So I’d say this board book is better for slightly older toddlers up to (and probably beyond!) the ages of 5 or 6.
The next double page scene is called ‘a city awake’ and again there’s so many flaps and the art is superb! I can honestly say this is the most beautiful board book I’ve seen in a while. Following this we have ‘journeys through the night’ showing nighttime movements of a variety of vehicles going about their business. Again, lots of detail and a huge array of flaps of different shapes and sizes to investigate.
The double page of ‘desert nightlife’ was so colourful with its gorgeous purples and pinks and starry night sky. This page isn’t my granddaughters favourite as there’s a huge spider lift the flap which she wasn’t keen on and neither was I, I will admit!
Following on with a snowy nighttime scene, with so much nature, then ‘under the dark waves’ with multicoloured sea life and again loads of flaps to lift. At the end the sun rises and we’re back to the original scene of people’s homes and the tree and landscape. There’s lots of short text and various speech bubbles to read aloud which ties the scenes together beautifully.
This really is a fantastic educational book which is full to the brim of learning and discovery. Highly recommended! (If you’re kind of ok about spiders, of course!)
