Overall Series Review: 4.9/5 stars
The Assassin's Blade: 5/5 stars
This was my second time rereading The Assassin's Blade and I just forgot how much I enjoyed it when I read it the first time and I think reading it before the rest of the books helped too because then I was reading things chronologically. I really loved the characters, they made me happy and I loved getting to see Celaena again and Sam and Yrene before the Yrene we know now. Each of the stories ends up becoming more and this book was just definitely needed.
Throne of Glass: 4.85/5 stars
Every time I read this one, I'm always more of a Dorian fan than a Chaol fan. Before knowing who Celaena actually is, I always thought that she would make a great queen and that her and Dorian would have been great together and would have the relationship that I had always wanted for myself where both were avid readers that could talk about books all the time. The competition was always something that I enjoyed reading and it was great to come back to it.
Crown of Midnight: 4.8/5 stars
This book I guess has always been my least favorite of them all just because of the fact that I was never a huge Chaol fan. I was okay with the fact that Celaena chose Chaol out of him and Dorian, though. I loved getting to see more of what happened in the castle and I loves watching the relationships build when I reread this book and I just really loved rereading the series.
Heir of Fire: 4.9/5 stars
I really really loved meeting Manon and Aelin who are probably tied for favorite characters in this series, if not ever. I just loved Abraxos and the wyverns and seeing how the Ironteeth witches worked, but still watching Celaena accept who she is and building a relationship with Rowan, and still getting to see what happens at the castle with Dorain and Chaol and Aedion.
Queen of Shadows: 5/5 stars
Queen of Shadows has always been my favorite because of all of the things that happen. Manon and Elide and also Manon and Dorian, but then also everything happening with Aelin and her court including saving Aedion but then reuniting with Rowan and Lysandra and just the more relationships that happened and grew between characters that weren't necessarily romantic.
Empire of Storms: 5/5 stars
I loved Empire of Storms so much because of the fact that Aelin was kicking ass and so much was happening and it was just magnificent and I couldn't get enough of it. This book ended up making me cry so much because of everything that happened and it was just so great.
Tower of Dawn: 4.68/5 stars
I was conflicted about reading Tower of Dawn just because Chaol was not my favorite character and I didn't want to read a whole book about him, but I enjoyed it so much more than I originally expected too and he grew on me. I loved getting to experience a new part of the world and meet new characters.
Kingdom of Ash: 4.96/5 stars
This book was so good. Everything came together, it made my cry and laugh and I just couldn't get enough of it. It was just what I needed and I finished it so much faster than I was expecting to, but it was just so good. The only reason it didn't get a 5/5 stars was because I left still wanted a little bit more in the ending because I figured we would get a little more of the characters after the war was over, but it was really good regardless.
Main Characters:
Celaena Sardothian/Aelin Ashryver Galathynius is the main character that the story is revolved around and I love her with all my heart. She inspires me so much and her strength has encouraged me to do things that I never thought that I would have been able to do.
Dorian Havilliard is a man that quickly stole my heart with his charm, but then his love for books just killed me. He is so amazing and his growth throughout the series was just something that I couldn't get enough of. Especially when he is getting close to a certain golden-eyed witch.
Chaol Westfall was not my favorite character, but he was still a good man and he did everything that he could to protect Dorian and all that he did was because of his brotherly love for Dorian and so I have quite a bit of respect for him, regardless of how much I like him.
Rowan Whitethorn is just one of those characters that just made my heart happy with the love that he had shown Aelin when they were together and the dedication and care that he had for her in Kingdom of Ash just made me so happy. He loved all of Aelin and not just certain parts of her and it was just an amazing relationship to watch unfold.
Manon Blackbeak is one of my favorite characters ever, she is just so badass and I couldn't get enough of her character growth, I just love her so much.
Lysandra was good for Aelin and just a good character in general. She was a great friend to Aelin and was willing to do so much to help her friend and I think that that is what counts in their relationship.
Aedion Ashryver was kind of an asshole, but I did enjoy his character. You could definitely tell how much he cares for the ones he loves as well as his soldiers and he was smarter than people gave him credit for.
Yrene was just a lovely character to read about, I love her so much, and the fact that she was pregnant and still could kick ass, was just amazing.
Nesryn deserved so much more and I'm really glad that she found it with Sartaq.
Elide was such a strong character that was just so fun to read about. She was so smart and she cared so much, and she deserved so much more.
Lorcan was kind of a big asshole, but I do like him with Elide.
Other Characters:
Sam Cortland deserved so much better.
Arobynn Hamel deserved so much worse.
Kaltain Rompier deserved so much more than what she was given, but she was detrimental to the story.
Nehemia Ytger was not my favorite, I really didn't care for her. I understood why she did what she did, but she still wasn't my favorite.
Fleetfoot brought me so much joy, I love her so so much.
Asterin has been through so much and I'm glad that she finally got to avenge her baby.
The Thirteen was such an amazing group of witches and I loved them all so much, I cried to so hard when they Yielded.
Abraxos is like a dog and I love him so much, I really really want an Abraxos.
Maeve was the worst, I hated her more than I did Erawan.
Erawan was such a smart being to be able to come up with all that he did, but he was so so twisted and I hate him.
Mother Blackbeak is just a monster and I despise her, she deserved everything that came to her in the end.
King of Adarlan really wasn't that bad of a guy once you got the Vlag out of him. He really did care for Dorian and what he did with the Key just made me cry.
Fenrys was like a puppy and I love him so much. I want one. I love how he was there for Aelin in Kingdom of Ash.
Gavriel was such a great character and I loved them.
Other characters made me happy like Sartaq and Hasar and Kashin and Renia and so many others. This seried just had so many great characters. Rolfe and Ansel and so many others where great and I just enjoyed all the characters so much.

There are no regrets here. Arguably my absolute favorite book series, and that throws Harry Potter to #2 on the list (<--that is not a title I strip down lightly from its throne). You will love the characters. You will love the plots. You will love the twists. And you will love the joy, anger, sadness, and absolute heartbreak this series brings to the table.

The former review was a place holder until I had the time to sit down and write this.
Alright. This was a journey of about I can't even remember how many months for me. Well over a year, though. Not because they were dull or difficult to get through (except for Assassin's Blade), but because I enjoy sipping and savoring books.
The best way I can describe this series to someone is like 7 seasons of really good TV. The first season is confusing and characters are being established, the audience is getting their bearings, etc. Then the second book has steam to build off of the first, and then the third season things were apparently not complicated enough and there's some random chick ripping throats out of some farm hands for some reason which, honestly, kind of had me feeling a certain way and then that character goes on to be the lock screen on my phone. One of the later seasons was a bit of a reach, a bit of a filler (looking at you, Tower of Dawn) but there was still a little bit of plot to be had there. And then of course, we have the grand finale.
I just came off of reading Kingdom of Ash over the weekend. It took me several months to read it. In fact, I reckon since January and we are now closing out April. Again, no rhyme or reason, but I wasn't going to read it if I didn't feel like it. And there were times where I read it because I felt forced to (I make content with books sometimes) and I felt like the experience was diminished because of that. For example, when the 13 die, I wasn't as emotionally invested in that as I could have been had I been reading because I wanted to. So I put the book down with a little less than 100 pages left to go and didn't pick it back up for weeks until I was ready. And as I flew home from a quick trip to San Diego, Mount Rainier poking above the clouds, the sting of a new book/ACOTAR themed tattoo on my leg, I watched as Fenrys stabbed Maeve from behind. I felt the despair and sadness and healing of Dorian discovering his father's name. I heard the roar of thousands of voices chanting Yrene's name led by a blood splattered Aelin raising her flaming sword to the sky. I smelled the spring air as Aelin saw the Kingsflame growing once more in Terrasen. And that, my friends, was the best possible scenario I couldn't have conceived for myself where I closed out the journey of this magnificent series.
Was I totally happy with the ending? I don't know. What I *did* feel is after Maeve is killed and Erawan is defeated it seemed to drag on a bit but at the same time, I wanted to have a little epilogue for each of our characters to see how they were fairing. But at the same time, I like that it's up to us to imagine where they are and what they're doing. Does Manon actually settle down and marry Dorian? I don't think she would; it seems against her character, and honestly - I don't think Dorian would want her to feel pinned down either. I do suspect that there are some substantial booty calls getting made tho.
Chaol and Yrene. What was the point of binding their lives together in such a show of importance if they don't end up dying in the final battle?
I find it interesting that Avengers Endgame came out a year behind Kingdom of Ash's release. When there's the surprise portals and the hidden Fae army is released to fight Morath, I was raising an eyebrow in the moment. But then I looked it up and it seems that Marvel took a leaf from SJM's imagination.
There were A LOT of nods to Lord of the Rings throughout the series. "To Whatever End", for example, is used by Theoden as they're about to fight at Helm's deep. The battle of Anielle felt like reading a higher fantasy version of the battle of Helm's Deep. I'm not mad about this at all, and perhaps that's why it read so well; it's just an observation I've made.
The mention of Vaughan at the end there was sort of comical to me as he literally plays no role in the entire series, so like... why bother?
Overall, I'm glad I read it. I think Kingdom of Ash has so much investment in characters that you feel every blow as it lands. I thought that it was a well paced, well timed ending to the series and I didn't think SJM was reaching in any of the ways she closed us out as I've seen in a number of television shows.

I don't think she would; it seems against her character, and honestly - I don't think Dorian would want her to feel pinned down either. I do suspect that there are some substantial booty calls getting made tho.
Chaol and Yrene. What was the point of binding their lives together in such a show of importance if they don't end up dying in the final battle?
I find it interesting that Avengers Endgame came out a year behind Kingdom of Ash's release. When there's the surprise portals and the hidden Fae army is released to fight Morath, I was raising an eyebrow in the moment. But then I looked it up and it seems that Marvel took a leaf from SJM's imagination.
There were A LOT of nods to Lord of the Rings throughout the series. "To Whatever End", for example, is used by Theoden as they're about to fight at Helm's deep. The battle of Anielle felt like reading a higher fantasy version of the battle of Helm's Deep. I'm not mad about this at all, and perhaps that's why it read so well; it's just an observation I've made.
The mention of Vaughan at the end there was sort of comical to me as he literally plays no role in the entire series, so like... why bother?
Overall, I'm glad I read it. I think Kingdom of Ash has so much investment in characters that you feel every blow as it lands. I thought that it was a well paced, well timed ending to the series and I didn't think SJM was reaching in any of the ways she closed us out as I've seen in a number of television shows.

EPIC fantasy series! This is an undertaking but well worth it. I read TOG 1st, then followed a reading order where the Assassin's Blade novellas are split up, and I read Tower of Dawn and Empire of Storms tandem. I enjoyed this reading order but if you want to keep it simple AB could be 3rd and no tandem. It would be great either way. This series has everything you would want in high fantasy. Not much spice - some in books 5 and 6, but the romance is great. My only gripe was how battle heavy the series was, but that's to be expected in a fight between good and evil. I highly recommend.

This review is solely for Throne of Glass, not all 8 books.
Reading this and then finding out that the book was the first book Sarah J. Maas wrote had me freaking out because it was really good. I did not know what to expect going into this series especially being that I read A Court of Thorns and Roses first, but the mystery of Celaena Sardothien really had me interested in knowing more about her story and what was coming next. The love triangle in this story had me enthralled fully, and had me excited to know what would become of the relationships. The story of a teenage girl being a sinister and ruthless assassin was also something unexpected because of her sheer age and the fact that she was pulled out of a prison at the start of the story. I cannot wait to continue on to Crown of Midnight and find out what is next for Celaena and how the story will progress in the series. If you have not read this yet, this is your chance to jump into the world of fantasy reading, and being me I thought I would never read it but here I am sucked into the magical vortex of these ALL too interesting books.

Oh my, 4 and 5 were good books. Other than that, wow. I kept waiting...for the author to understand her own characters!!! From a cousin that was fully devoted to main character treated like feces the entire series, and huge lead ups, just abruptly ended with lack luster. All the hook ups. Everyone gets paired. Cheesy. It's crazy, I connected with Manon and Abraxos the most Lol!!! They were powerful. Won't go back to this author, too fustrating.

I don’t think I’ve ever read anything so expertly woven in my whole life. Not since Harry Potter have I read any series that left me so beyond words just from the sheer thought put into the plot. There were endless characters and places but I never once felt lost or confused. It was truly glorious. Maas has found a fan for life.
I will say that the first book is a mite but slow BUT if you can get past that then hold onto your Aesterion horses because this book will blow your braids out. (References to the book I promise 😉)

I finished it. I finally finished the series…
The first time I’ve actually felt emotional finishing book(s) over - although I am new to fiction series.
That series has been a place of distraction and somewhere to channel my feelings in the beginning so definitely helped heightened the intense experience of this intense series.
The beginning of this series is my favourite and as it progressed on I was less in love with it. So many new characters came along the way and I just wasn’t that interested in them so I didn’t really care what happened. They definitely don’t hold a soft spot like the beginning lot.
The progress in this series is very impressive. It turns into a whole new story as we go along and most find it great but I liked it less tbh but honestly finishing it and looking back does make me feel emotional and proud of how far the characters have come. Especially from how dystopian the series is.
I’ve never felt so emotional towards a book before and this series is insane for emotions. You will no doubt feel them strongly. It’s a love and hate relationship from me.
Some of the writing drove me insane. Like how some stuff just didn’t add up, make sense, or came out of no where. The story in queen of shadows I believe references back to heir of fire from a deleted chapter so the reader is left confused. However, as the series goes on, the writing gets better. Makes sense as she was 16 when she wrote this. So many beautiful golden nuggets of writing in heir of fire and others that leaves you so emotional. She is very talented.
Anywho I now need a break from this to recover…

Review of book 1:
Book 3 actually made me quit for...8 years, it would appear. But in my fantasy binge for 2022, finally got around to reading the rest. And it definitely gets better. I think book 1 and especially book 3 are just very generic and show the protagonist at peak unlikable tedium mode.
I still don't really like any male characters besides the love interest who dies in book 0. Largely due to the abundance of arrogant cranky alphas. My #2 male is maybe Falkan, because of his quest for my fave rather than any aspect of his actual personality which is...fine.
And all the female characters I like are introduced in the prequel novel: Lysandra of course, Yrene, Ansel sometimes, Aelin sometimes. Lysandra after her big step up in character development in book 4 is treated too often as a convenient plot device/weapon aside from that blah romance, but personality wise she remains great; she doesn't let the blah man she loves sap it away, which happens a lot in these kinds of series.
Because Yrene is such a big part of the climax, I do think it makes sense for book 6 to be a full novel; it would be weird and deus ex machina-y if the big savior only previously appeared in a short story and a novella. Even if we have to endure the secondary romance of that book. And all that Chaol; she does fix him into tolerability, so there's that.
The plot armor after book 2 is kinda unbelievable. None of the main non-demonic characters die; there are some sad deaths, but they aren't really integral to the overall story. It lowers the stakes. And neither of the final showdowns quite live up to the buildup, partially in how they go down, partially in the villains not being as interesting as I would like.
Even with the full journeys of Manon and Elide having their moments, I still feel a lot of pages could have been cut there. But then I feel the same way about Chaol and Dorian who are mains since book 1, so just overall there's a lot of trimmable fat.
Most of the time, the emotional Wham moments pay off well. So the big storytelling beats hit when they absolutely need to.

Oh, there are so many things I can say about these books. But I'll try to be brief.
One is that they're a complete and total waste of time.
Two is that if you were looking for an engaging, diverse fantasy novel with likeable characters, you'll be severely disappointed.
Three is that I've read most of SJM'S books, and I'll say this: SJM is utterly incapable of writing an unproblematic book.
Some issues that I feel qualified to speak on are these two specific ones:
- The handling of Aedion's bisexuality. Being in the queer community myself, I hate when things like this are written this particular way. Personally, reading all throughout the books, I never would've known he was bi because his attraction to men is never mentioned in his pov (or even by other characters) until he says so to Lysandra at the very end of the last book. And to make things worse, he's constantly referred to as "Ardarlan's Whore". (He's also the only lgbtq+ character, except for the gay fae couple in book 3 that were more token diversity points than actual characters.)
- The toxic masculinity within Aelin and Rowan's relationship, as well as the age gap. Rowan's a 100+ year old fae and Aelin's like, what, 19? 20? I will never understand how people can deal or tolerate this trope because to me it just makes me feel extremely uncomfortable and disgusted.
I'm not going to go extremely in-depth about the other issues because I think that other people from other reviews and accounts can and have explained them a lot better.
I read these books when I was younger and only picked them up again quite a few years later to analyze the problems on them, and throughout I was constantly wondering how I could've ignored these problems; how I missed the multitude of issues within all 8 books.
Personally, I could've done without reading these books in my entire life. Someone could tell me "you're cursed to never see another sjm book again!" and I'd be like "that's fine with me". I'm not usually the kind of person to say "I hate this book" but to be frank, I hate all of these books. I don't like the author either.
If you're like me and want to read up on more problems with SJM'S books, I'd suggest looking up the "anti-sjm" tag on tumblr, or watching the few YouTube videos on why SJM'S books are problematic. Such as: https://youtu.be/woq2HzBOqLI
The good news is, there are plenty of other diverse fantasy book series out there! With significantlly less problems (or no problems)!
A few that come to mind are:
- Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo (I've reread this duology like 6 times)
- Priory of The Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (this is getting another book in early 2023, it also has a sapphic relationship and very well done female characters, as well as fantastic worldbuilding. If you don't mind 900 page books, I highly recommend checking this out)
- These Violent Delights duology by Chloe Gong (emotionally destroyed me, as all good books do)
- A Dark and Hollow Star saga by Ashley Shuttleworth (the first two books are out as of right now, there's going to be 4 total)
- Ace of Shades trilogy by Amanda Foody (highly underrated series)

Maas is a good storyteller; she knows how to create suspense that keeps you reading. A lot of the support is told via rights and dialogue, rather than action, but there's enough of that to keep a reader on her toes. I'm probably not the right age to fully fall in love with these young characters; their motives sometimes seem silly or not well thought out to me... They let go of things that I would definitely need to find out more about. I don't fully understand the boys' attraction to the female lead or hers to them beyond convenience and attractiveness and each of them being more interesting than any of them expected. But the story of the evil threatening the kingdom, the intrigues within and around the king, the magic waiting to be summoned... That's interesting... I'll keep reading for that.

I struggled to get into the story first, however, I wasn’t used to slow pace reading, especially after ACOTAR, which seemed rather fast paced to me. The further I got into the series the more obsessed I became. The story truly works itself slowly to the pinnacle from different POV’s and storylines which will be relevant to the end. I feel like I got broken up with once I finished this series and am looking forward to re-reading it in the future sometimes. I highly recommend this to anyone who’s into slow but ever changing worldbuilding, scattered across various and different kingdoms (which make you feel like you are there) and strong female characters.

Get ready for a wild ride

Surprisingly I loved this series! I had read ACOTAR and hated it. I debated whether to buy this series but it was a good buy so I figured why not try it. I'm thrilled I did!
The action thrilled me and I couldn't wait to see what happened next, it kept me on edge even when it seemed slow. I loved the main character and how sarcastic and confident she was. I rooted for her the whole time. A couple of the characters got on my nerves but the rest were great.
This set included a book of short stories that filled in some blanks but I didn't enjoy it. Some people did so I guess that it just wasn't my thing.
The moral is that even if you didn't like her other books you should give this series a chance.
