The Rules of Love #8

Rule #8: You Can't Excuse the Billionaire's Heir: A Standalone Sweet High School Romance

Rate this book
He wasn't supposed to be nice. This changes everything.

Charlotte Robinson has one goal: survive her senior year. Well, if she's truthful, it's actually to survive her new life without her mom. Which would be a lot easier to do if her dad was actually dealing with the death. Instead, he’s buried himself in so many abandoned vehicles that their yard has turned into a suburban junkyard and it's just a matter of time before the city intervenes.

When Lucas Addington, the obnoxious rich kid who's been banished to the small town of Sweet Water, douses her in his carmel macchiato, she's pretty sure she's reached her lowest low. But that's only the beginning. He's conceited and spoiled—everything she expected from a billionaire's heir—until things begin to change. Suddenly, she finds herself drawn to him for reasons she can't explain. He makes her feel safe and wanted, something she'd forgotten how to feel. Just when she allows herself to open up to him, her life comes crashing down around her.

Now Charlotte must decide if she can fix her crumbling life and keep Lucas, or fail and lose everything she holds dear...again.

1 town. 1 high school. 12 sweet romances. Read Misunderstanding the Billionaire's Heir from Anne-Marie Meyer. It is the first installment of the Sweet Water High Multi-Author Series.

I had so much fun reading this first book in the new Sweet Water High series. Growing up I loved reading Sweet Valley High! Anybody else out there remember those? Come on, don't be afraid to admit it. You all know you read them. Funnily enough, about a month ago I was looking at my old paperback copies of them. Hahahaha! When I first picked up this book to read I didn't initially think about Sweet Valley High. But then when some of the teenage drama started, I couldn't help but think back on that series and smile. I even loved the reference that the author threw into the book. Ah, good memories.

This is going to be a fun series that I can't wait to recommend to friends (and the high school librarian) for their teenagers. It's great to have clean reads that I know my teenage daughters and others can enjoy just as much as myself.

From the very beginning I found myself laughing out loud, cringing, smiling, and cheering these characters on. These characters felt very real in some of their struggles and made it easy to connect with them.

Charlotte's mom has passed away and she's trying to keep her family surviving. Especially when her dad is struggling. He's throwing himself into projects to avoid the pain but has left Charlotte to pick up some of the slack. Her dad, herself and her younger brother were a family that I enjoyed reading about. The emotions were well written. I loved Charlotte's go to older friend, Winny. She was wonderful and a great strength to Charlotte.

There were several other teenage characters introduced in this book that set up some of the characters for the future books (I believe there will be 15). Yay!

I can't forget to mention the character that adds some drama and comedy to our story...not to mention some swoonyness too! Ok, I know swoonyness isn't a word but it is now! Hee Hee. Lucas was a character that you don't want to judge to quickly. The first interactions and meetings with him and Charlotte were H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S!!!!

It's been a while since I've been a teenager but this book brought back some of those moments and memories. The Good. The Bad. The Ugly. >.< I can't complain, I had more good than bad or ugly. But I'm grateful to have moved on from that time in life and all the uncertainties and ups and downs and emotions (ok, we still have all of that throughout life, just different than when you're a teenager).

Definitely a fun book for teenagers and adults who will always been young at heart. Grab a copy, and enjoy while you're transported to Sweet Valley...er, ummm, scratch that...Sweet Water High!

Content: Clean. Death of a parent is a topic that could be harder for some to read. Some kissing between the characters but nothing further. There is a scene where a character is in the bathtub and is walked in on by another character. Nothing was seen and it was written cleanly but just a heads up.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

there’s a time and a place for reading about teaching a man how to crack an egg… and i was not in the mood for it.

i don’t know what happened… the premise of the book sounded good but then it was all insta-love and like 100 pages in they were saying “i love you” ??

this was ridiculously fast paced, very short, corny, cringy, unrealistic but yet i liked it enough to finish it even though it wasn’t that good.

(4.5 Stars) Oh, the angst is strong with this one and this author really has a knack for writing in this genre. I loved how the first impressions were not an example of true personality, as Lucas and Charlotte had to really open themselves up to each other in order to allow each other in.

Things are definitely not always as they seem and that's case in point with these characters. Lucas is rich and comes across as an entitled spoiled brat. Thankfully, there's much more to his story and everything slowly unravels as the pages are turned, leaving the reader with a vulnerable character. Charlotte, too, has had an incredibly difficult recent past and in a effort to find her peace and place in life, unexpectedly finds more than she bargains for and must take risks to finally discover her happiness. The push and pull is so angsty, but really makes for a conflicted and engaging story.

Meyer is able to accurately portray teenage fears and feelings, while managing to captive this adult reader (me). I loved the friendships, both young and old, and the budding romance invited butterflies to take up residence in my stomach.

This book flashed me back to the past, especially with the SWEET VALLEY HIGH reference, and had me cheering and rooting for this new swoony series. I'm so excited to delve into more stories set in Sweet Water and to explore the inhabitants of this wonderful, small town. This set is off to a solid start!

Content: mild romance

Very Cute

I love the concept of this YA series with various authors all contributing with stories of young love and high school. This particular story had some depth and struggle to it which helped the characters feel more substantial without becoming too overwhelming. I think it was spot on for the intentions of this series. I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to more from this series.

Misunderstanding the Billionaire's Heir was a pretty cute read. The characters and everything in-between were just cute and adorable. I thought things were going to take a different turn but then the book just kept on being sweet.

In it, you will meet Charlotte and Lucas. Of course these two had a rocky-ish start.. but I knew that they would instantly become a thing. What's the saying, "He picks on you because he likes you".. or something like that.

These two were interesting for it being a YA book. Lucas definitely has some issues that he needs to deal with it and Charlotte needs to stop judging a book by it's cover. I mean boy. They have to lean on one another to get through everything but they did it in a cutesy way. Again, with the word cute but I can't say it any differently.

Overall, this book was cute.

I’ve said it before: this (YA) genre is where the author’s talent excels. She definitely has a good grasp and voice for teen and YA audiences. This book was fun because it overlaps with some of the others in the series. It’s taken a different perspective and point of view of a story by other characters. It can be read alone but it also complements Maddie’s story. This is Charlotte’s (Maddie’s best friend’s) telling of the story. It’s a sweet, clean romance intended for teens and young adults but can be enjoyed by older adults as well.

Great YA Romance!

I loved this one- reading first person perspective really helped me get inside the protagonist, Charlotte’s, head. She is dealing with so much emotionally and into her life comes Lucas- and wow he was a fantastic swoon-worthy hero! There was some great romantic tension and toe-curling moments in this clean YA romance. I’m looking forward to more books in this series!

This book was cute and super engaging ... until Charlotte and Lucas got together. Then they're kissing constantly, lying about their relationship, and professing their love incredibly quickly. I still enjoyed the book, but the last 25% wasn't my favorite. Also, there's a reference to a "spy" of Lucas's father's that I didn't understand, and his parents are, clearly, THE WORST. Still, it's a quick, clean (one mild swear word is all) read, and I did like it.

Good book

I actually liked this book.

https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2019...

•••*** Not that many spoilers; but there’s some yes***•

I kind of thought well figured that Lucas actually liked Charlotte from the first start when he met her at Maggie job. & then turns around and he’s the grandson of Winny. That’s what made them close. But I thought he was a prick until I realize he really not. His father is the one that made him so angry because his father felt like Lucas was a disappointment. One thing I’m glad on was not being born rich because often times the rich have it way worse than the poor. You gotta look at even though this person may not have all the money in the world they are more 100% happier. Money isn’t everything. Charlotte showed Luke is the real meaning of life and to actually be a nice person and that everyone loves their family in a good way.

Keith and their mother seem like evil people. No way; I would want someone to plan my life. When someone does that to their child that child will be 100% miserable or hateful in the long run. Because often times that’s not where they wanted to be. But I am glad Lucas found Charlotte in Sweet Water. Not for her; I think he would’ve had a horrible life. Plus I knew that he didn’t want Charlotte best friend Maggie I don’t understand how in the world both Charlotte mad Maggie didn’t see it. Plus, it’s understandable why her father didn’t move those cars but I am glad that Lucas helped in the end and Charlotte came to her senses about her wanting to be with Lucas. I was like girl you better forget what his father thinks; heck at least he the one that wants you.

Literally one of the worst thing I've read, I actually prefer to have and FMC who isn't a complete egotistical maniac who thinks she's perfect and when others become upset at her for STEALING HER BEST FRIENDS CRUSH AFTER HER BEST FRIEND MULTIPLE TIMES ASKED HER IF SHE LIKED HIM AND HER LIE AND SAYING SHE DOESN'T!!! but no, the best friend is the bad guy in that scenario. Oh and how dare her boyfriend be in crisis and have his down moments wanting to rant about a bad thing that happened for him when "she has her own stuff to deal with." LIKE BITCH YOU CALLED HIM TO RANT WHEN HE HAS OTHER THINGS TO DEAL WITH YOU HYPOCRITE. Honestly this is one of the few times I've wished for a sad ending, because she doesn't deserve a happy ending, she doesn't deserve any of the amazing people she somehow managed to convince that it was their fault and that she's an angel or some shit??

It was alright........ I didn't love it, but then I didn't hate it either. I don't think I'll be reading the other books in this series, at least not right now.

My main bones to pick with this one was that somehow it was just so cliche?? Not the plot, that I knew was going to be cliche, and I was excited because I wanted to read something that had a cliche plot, but the writing? Somehow, I just didn't find it very compelling?

Anyway, I recommend it to anyone who wants to read a clean YA romance, and doesn't mind the somewhat cliche writing.

hmm didn't expect anything, really. it was okay. i just wished they explored more plot like charlotte's relationship with her dad and brother, charlotte's real feelings about her mom's death, lucas relationship with winny, lucas with her mom (a mention would be enough. but oh well. we can't, have all things. it's short, cute and sweet.

This story was a great introduction to the series.

Teen angst at its height. Teens from two broken families with complicated relationships are dislike at first sight. It's a classic enemies to lovers tale on the high school level.

As always, the writing is solid, the romance sweet, and the emotions strong.

This is another sweet, clean read from Anne-Marie Meyer. We learn that first impressions aren’t always right. In this book, we meet Charlotte and Lucas and they don’t get off on the right foot, at all, lol. Grab your copy and see what happens. This book is appropriate for all ages.

Sweet High School Romance

Lucas may be Mr. Darcy personified, but he's pretty perfect for Charlotte. There's lots of kissing and her Dad swears once, otherwise it's a cute book with great characters! I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

IM PISSED OFF.

in all honesty, this book wasn’t that horrid. but it deserves the one star cause i’m petty. i’m just done with the insta love. GIRL YOUVE KNOWN HIM FOR A WEEK— LIKE MISS ONLY KNOWS HIS NAME 💀.

and i’m annoyed so much. like WHY. WHY ARE THESE BOOKS BEING WRITTEN. it’s not even that she’s spending so much time with him! she literally saw him like three times. not that those scenes weren’t bad they were actually GOOD but there just wasn’t enough of it. like there also wasn’t any idea of time other than the fact that school hadn’t started yet so maybe the whole thing happened in two weeks?? but like make it two weeks, bro. feels like it all happened in like two days 😭.

anyway, maybe this has finally been the book that will push me away from romance. let me say an oath for this momentous occasion: i solemnly swear that unless it’s been a book that i’ve been waiting for, i will not jump into another romance series.

*standing ovation*

giving a one star feels so good- maybe i’m a psychopath??

okay bye. finally.

Misunderstanding The Billionaire’s Heir by Anne-Marie Meyer is a charming YA romance that’s a delight to read at any age.

Charlotte Robinson’s future is in question. Since the passing of her mom she’s just trying to get by one day at a time. While her best friend Maddie and fellow classmates are looking forward to a great senior year and making plans for college, Char is desperately missing her mom and finding solace in her job at the bakery when she’s not babysitting her rambunctious 10 year old brother. If this was not enough, neighbors are starting to complain about her father's new hobby and yard that’s becoming a junkyard full of old cars and parts. Enter Lucas, a very wealthy, handsome, but temperamental young man who’s first meeting with Charlotte is anything but sweet. To make matters worse, Lucas just happens to be the grandson of her boss at the bakery, The Bread Basket.

As much as Charlotte tries to avoid Lucas, events in the town of Sweet Water keep throwing the two together and soon a small flame begins to smolder between the both of them. As Char’s best friend Maddie develops a crush on Lucas and the truth about his appearance in Sweet Water comes to the surface, the beautiful romance that begins to develop between Lucas and Charlotte may be over before it starts. In light of all these events and more, only time will tell if their feelings can survive.

This YA romance was so much fun. The characters were well developed and I was able to get a real sense of the small town of Sweet Water. I really liked Charlotte’s character the best. I could feel her loneliness for her mom and the love she had for her family and friends. She was loyal to a fault, even putting her own happiness on hold for those she held dear. It was delightful to watch Charlotte and Lucas grow as their relationship developed. All in all a very sweet romance that would please anyone.

I enjoyed Misunderstanding The Billionaire's Heir by Anne-Marie Meyer and I am looking forward to additional books in the Sweet Water High Romance series.

I thought this book would be better then it was. I didn’t really like the main characters. Charlotte drove me nuts with her thinking and wishy washy ways. I don’t understand why or how she came to liking Lucas so quickly. I understand the attraction but she did not even get to know him really. And he was hot and cold, bipolar basically throughout most of the book. He would be so rude to her and he said that they were acquaintances not friends and then he would be nice to her like nothing happened and she would just except that and acted like it was fine that he was a complete jerk. So I guess I just don’t understand the romance of the book and how they came to like each other because they did not really talk or spend time together and they just stared at each other. And then it was like they’re in love once they kissed it just didn’t make sense. I guess I just didn’t understand the timeline in their relationship because it did not seem like they had one at all besides getting angry at each other and then somewhat being nice.
And then with her best friend she doesn’t talk to her about these feelings she’s had and I understand her not quite understanding them and that her mom passed away but she should easily be able to tell her friends that she’s not sure or confused about her feelings and not just flat out lie to her.
It was really hard to read this book I skimmed some of it because it was just not keeping me intrigued. And even as I came to the end it wasn’t all that exciting.

I think this book was just kind of boring. It fell flat for me, to say the least. Because I'm probably going to write about spoilers, I'll hide the rest of the review. Just know that this book isn't worth your time if you want a book with any depth or credibility.
Don't waste your time on this book. It's not good.

🎀tropes: enemies to lovers, forbidden romance, rich-poor

4⭐️ i wish the cover of mine had looked like the one on goodreads but it’s not awful. once again i wish her books were longer, bc the story is rlly good i just feel like there could be more. i also wish there was a dual pov. also the end-ish scene was so adorable for lucas to do and so considerate.

。၄၃ characters ၄၃ 。

_charlotte_: she was so motivating with all she did for her family, and i was so sad for her about her mom😭💔 also i loved how she just couldn’t resist lucas🩷🩷

_lucas_: kinda a douche at the beginning, but by the end he was so sweetttt, specifically toward charlotte🩷, but i wish i could’ve seen more from what was going on with his dad

_winny_: SHES MY FAVORITEEE she was so sweet and caring toward charlotte, and also lucas. i loved the dynamics btwn her and charlotte she was like her grandma but like better

_maddie_: okayy so i get she’s like her best friend but i feel like it was pretty obvious charlotte liked lucas and if she has a new man every week she could’ve let him go without getting mad, but i get it at the same time

Sweet but a bit superficial

This is a decently written (in style, the text needs more editing) and amusing YA read, for the most part, but I spent the better part of the book wondering how Lucas came to care for Charlotte.

Honestly I thought the author might be planning on having it turn out that Lucas latched on to Char as a way to get back at his dad - except there was no triangle for someone else to end up with her if that happened. Or that Char would think that was what Lucas was doing & that would be the boy-loses-girl part of the conflict that would be followed by a better explanation of the situation.

It was pretty angsty & Char's not thinking clearly or reacting smart, but it's forgivable. We get hints of Lucas's issues, but I never fully got why he repeatedly acted like such a rude jerk to Charlotte. There's also no additional explanation of Lucas's conversation with his dad about the expectations for him after graduating.

Despite my criticisms, I actually enjoyed reading it, but understand going in that it doesn't aspire to anything more than fluffy, forgettable amusement to distract you after a long day.

Clean romance level: sweet kisses

NO! Ugh! I was so excited to start this series. I had the time to read 1 a day and was just going to read them all in a week. I almost bought the whole series, but I am glad I didn't.

My BIGGEST issue was how quickly the characters . Lucas was barely there for a WEEK! And to that fact, if the progression of Charlotte's feelings and confusion was so scattered. She met him one day and then the next day her feelings for him changed like 5 times. It was just too unrealistic.

Also, if I had to read Charlotte say her life was "complicated" one more time, I probably would have just stopped reading. Sure, her life was tough, but everyone is going through something. And she should know that. Clearly Lucas' life was "complicated" as well. It just seemed that she thought her life was SO much harder than anyone else's.

There also didn't seem to be too much of a revolution with Lucas and his family. I know he said he was going to do what he wants, but it would be nice to actually see that.

UGH! I'm so disappointed.

The blurb sounded cute, but I was so disappointed, I don’t even know where to begin.

The writing was cringey, the characters felt underdeveloped. There wasn’t a whole lot of build up to Charlotte and Lucas’ relationship. I usually can get on board with an insta-love plot when it’s done well, but the way it was executed here was just too rushed for me. Lucas seemed shallow and immature, and just outright rude at times, so I wasn’t very invested in his character. Charlotte wasn’t that likable to begin with, but she just became more insufferable as the book went on.

The ending was lackluster, and I had a feeling everything was going to be wrapped up in a big cheesy bow, but I felt like we saw zero growth from anyone.

The only other book I have read by this author prior to this one was Rule #6: You Can’t Elevate the Outcast, and I enjoyed that, so I anticipated I would like this book, but we just did a complete 180.

I will probably try to read a few others from the series, since they are stand-alones, and pretty quick reads, but I found this one to be super underwhelming.

This is book 1 in a new YA series by Anne-Marie Meyer.

Charlotte Robinson has experiences the loss of her mother and is reeling from her dad's unwillingness or inability to cope with the loss. She feels like her world is falling apart and the only sane place she can go is The Bread Basket where she works.

Lucas Addington is a jerk who is the grandson of Charlotte's boss. He is wealthy and rude and yet he and Charlotte seem to have a spark that neither wants to acknowledge. Lucas has had some difficulties and secrets in his life that are weighing heavily on him. He was sent to his grandmother's for a "timeout" by his father and he is angry and hurt.

This book is a clean, sweet romance between high school seniors and some of the difficult life challenges they face and the feelings of love that they are beginning to experience.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I offer my honest review willingly.

It wasn't great

Charlotte was all over the place. But really, she's just a young girl who needs some serious help. Her dad failed miserably by not getting some grief counseling for his family. This left Charlotte a hot mess.
Lucas was also confusing because he was got and cold too. Mean, then sweet.
There was so much going on, but there was absolutely no depth to this story. The relationship is ridiculously rushed. They are both too immature to handle the maturity of a relationship. Charlotte was just too broken to handle anything, so she kept lying.
Also, the expression "pinched lips"was grossly overdone.

And, my biggest peeve on this story was this:
LUCAS DID NOT SPILL HIS COFFEE ON CHARLOTTE! She was looking at the ground when she ran into him, this causing his coffee to spill. Yet she kept saying he spilled it on her. If that is what the author is going for, she needed to write it as such.

There was something about the ocean that calmed me. Maybe it was the sound of the waves or the smell of salt.

Finally alone, I walked toward the ocean. Toward the water. The sound of lapping waves filled my ears. I took a deep breath, letting the scent of the sea wash over me.

I was so broken, that I was pretty sure that all the king’s men and all the king’s horses could never put me together again.

I was drowning and the only person who could save me right now was him.

“Then prove it. Face this fear with me. Be strong. Don’t let the uncertainty of the future scare you.”

“I’m going to fight for you, Charlotte Robinson. I won’t leave you no matter how hard you push me away.”

This was a cute, quick and clean book. I enjoyed seeing Lucas and Charlotte’s friendship and relationship grow. This book didn’t blow me away but I still really enjoyed it. It was a fun and quick book. 3.5 stars.

DNF, horribly written, bad pacing, annoying characters. I came into this with low expectations because come on it’s an amazon kindle YA romance. I’ve come to understand that those are not very well written, fast paced and a lil cliche but non the less a cute fast read. NOT THIS BOOK! The main character has a sad back story but there’s nothing there to make it feel real, her mom died a year ago and she cry’s just thinking about it but she never actually THINKS about it. We don’t even know what happened, if her and her mom are close. And she falls for the guy in 2 secs and goes through the whole I want you but you don’t want me let’s not be friends. Blah blah blah, I can’t even finish this review because it hurts me to even think about this book.

Quick cute read

I've read other books in this series and thought I'd try them in order. Based in Sweet water a beach town, each story shares the teen romance from a different students perspective. This one is Charlotte tale. She's struggling with losing her mom and finishing up the summer before her senior year of high school.
She works at the local bakery and a few short weeks before school she meets Lucas the grandson of her boss. He's been sent to stay with grandma because of mistakes made in NYC by his wealthy father. He seems very rude and snobby at first but as they get to know each other things change. The romance is a little rushed for my taste, but I get its a story so... I enjoyed it as a quick read.

Flat

So I love fluffy clean ya books if that’s what you want I recommend Kelly Oram she basically has it down to a science. This though... there was basically no dialogue or interaction between the mc’s just like I hate you, I might have feelings, let’s declare our love. I’m not saying you can’t fall in love quickly (I married my husband after 3 months and we’ve been together happily since) but you have to you know talk, get to know each other, you know crazy stuff like that. I feel the two mc’s spoke less to each other then the length of this review, that’s how weird it was to read them saying ‘love’ like I genuinely feel Romeo and Juliet liked each other more and we both know they were idiots. Change love to like and want to date you and this wouldn’t have been a terrible novella (yeah because it’s hella short) but as it stands it’s just flat and unrealistic
