I rescued her because I had to. I fell in love with her because she gave me no choice. Roman Costas Powerful. Intensely private. Cold. Dangerous. When he unwittingly puts an innocent woman in danger, he does something he never planned. Becomes involved. He didn’t anticipate the feelings Effie Warner brought out in him. He didn’t expect the woman he rescued to become his world. All he knows is that he’ll burn down the city to keep her safe. No matter the consequences. The suspenseful finale in Men of the Falls duet by New York Times Bestselling author Melanie Moreland
A bit about me: NYT/WSJ/USAT International bestselling author Melanie Moreland, lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of lots of lovely years and their rescue cat, Amber. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them. While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys travelling, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip. Melanie loves stories, especially paired with a good wine, and enjoys skydiving (free falling over a fleck of dust) extreme snowboarding (falling down stairs) and piloting her own helicopter (tripping over her own feet.) She's learned happily ever-afters, even bumpy ones, are all in how you tell the story.

Roman is the second and final book in the Men of the Falls duet by Melanie Moreland.
Roman Costas is thirty six years old and owns and runs his hotel and casino, The Maple in Niagara Falls as well as Maple II in Toronto. Roman prides himself on the way he runs his businesses but he also uses them to launder the money from his not so legitimate enterprises. Roman Costas is feared. Crossing him is a death sentence. Roman cares deeply for those close to him, his brother Luca, his best friend and right hand man, Aldo, both of their wives, and his Nonna. But he doesn’t believe in romantic love, not for himself anyway. He is not capable of it. But, when his words set a path that puts a defenseless woman in danger, Roman feels compelled to protect her. And as soon as they meet, as soon as they touch, Roman’s priorities take a new turn. He doesn’t understand the why of it, but it doesn’t matter. This woman is now under his care, and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.
Effie Warner is twenty seven years old. She may be naive when it comes to men, but she has a good head for business which is how she started her own diner. Everything she has she puts into her business. But when a handsome man in a suit that probably costs as much as she earns in a month, walks in, her instincts scream danger, get away. But when the unthinkable happens, it’s him that saves her, that protects her and cares for her.
“Wherever you are is my favorite place to be.”
Effie might give the impression that she is small and weak, easily taken advantage of. But this tiny woman is so strong, and so smart. I loved that she both kept Roman on his toes, but also left him completely confused. He had no idea why he was so obsessed with her, why her safety was so important to him. No matter the reason, though, he was going with his instincts.
I also loved seeing plenty of Aldo and Violet from the first book. Violet is such a force and loved the relationship as it developed between she and Effie. Effie saw Roman for the man he was, for his heart, for the way he cared for others. He claims he is incapable of love but he shows it in everything he does. Now all she has to do is stay alive long enough to help him to figure it out. I enjoyed both of these books so much. I loved getting to know these characters. I’m so glad Melanie decided to explore this wonderful world. Perhaps we will see more of it someday in the future.
I loved this duet so much! The Men of the Falls are going high up on my top Mafia recommendations after this.
I knew I was gonna love watching Roman fall in love. Especially after all the crap he gave Aldo when he fell. It's just too delicious. Watching a tough, show-no-feelings man lose his heart to a darling of a lady.
However, first we start with some tragedy and betrayal. Effie gets betrayed by her sister, Marianne, who owes Roman some money, and he is not giving her an inch. She gets desperate and sells her sister to some of Roman's rivals for the money to pay him off. This does not sit well with Roman and he makes it his mission to make it right, no matter what enemies he makes in the process.
Effie finds herself kidnapped. First by the lowlifes that Marianne sends her to, and then by Roman.. who keeps her for her own good. So sparks fly when she wants to get back to her life, but Roman just can't let this compelling little spitfire go.
It was a battle of wills that quickly turns to steamy tension and boils over into a love that is going to change Roman and Effie forever. It was just such a fun ride. It was a tad bit broodier and darker than Aldo was, but still has than softer feel that I like now and then in my Mafia Romance.
Also, I listened to this on audio and John Lane and Maxine Mitchell does a wonderful job. As always.
I highly recommend this duet and I hope Melanie Moreland writes more books in this world.
I wasn’t sure I was going to like this one but I enjoyed this better than the first book. Both MCs were pretty likable characters and i really loved the progression of their love story. The plot twist was a little cliche for me but I still ate up.
Roman had a premise that was so interesting to me and really had me one clicking it, so I appreciate the recommendation from "The Book Refuge" because I am not sure I would have read this author otherwise. I really had a wonderful time reading this one here. The whole idea of the heroine being put in a bad situation because of an evil manipulative sister and the hero saves the day...yeah I soak that up like a sponge. The plot was really fascinating and I adored the way that these two got along. I only had one major issue with this book and its that the heroine was a bit naive at times. I mean literally her life is in danger and she wants to go to her bake shop like everything is normal? Yeah the hero is so bad for protecting her and stopping that haha Now sometimes I can be gracious with TSTL type of heroines, but it was a factor in the story where she never really learns. The hero is much more patient with her than she probably deserves. But the justice against the sister...yeah she deserved it and more.
Overall I found Roman to be an intriguing reading and I most definitely want to read more of this author as she has me intrigued by these relationships between the three men.
"Roman" by Melanie Moreland delivers a riveting romantic tale entwined with elements of danger and suspense. The powerful and intensely private Roman Costas inadvertently places the innocent Effie Warner in harm's way, propelling them into a high-stakes game where passion and peril collide. Moreland skillfully weaves a narrative that explores the complexities of love amidst a backdrop of darkness, creating a magnetic pull that intensifies with each turn of the page. Roman's obliviousness to his own feelings adds depth to the character, while Effie's intelligence and resilience make her a compelling counterpart. The story's steamy moments and the palpable chemistry between the characters contribute to its allure. A worthy finale to the Men of the Falls duet, "Roman" captivates with its blend of romance, danger, and the transformative power of love, solidifying Melanie Moreland's place as a master storyteller in the genre. Very grateful to the author for this copy, opinions are my own
Book two in this duet fully encapsulates the love story between Roman and Effie and as such can be read as a standalone. However, trust me when I say you will want to read Aldo first. It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV and ends with a HEA. I loved Roman in Aldo’s book, but I really loved him here. I also appreciated how much of a role Aldo and Vi play in this book. I adore how they are some of only a few people who can tease Roman the way they do. I loved their friendship. Roman is a stoic person to most. He carries an air of power and restrained malevolence. When his world collides with Effie’s, he is smitten from the beginning though his denial is strong. Effie is a tiny woman who embodies all the good in the world. She is a little naïve when it comes to men. She exudes and air of innocence that persists even after she is no longer physically innocent. I loved how she sees beyond Roman’s façade. She recognizes that he is dangerous but also that she is safe with him. She sees his heart and how he treats the people he cares for. I adore the relationships she forms with Vi and Nonna. She believes in his love before he even recognizes that he feels love. She is patient and kind while being incredibly strong. Her whole life changes in an instant yet she rallies through the changes with resilience. She fights when she needs to and demands more from Roman in a quiet way. They are passionate together, but tender at the same time. I loved this world that the author created. I didn’t want it to end. There are moments of intense suspense and danger. There are also moments filled with romance, hot times, and even a few laughs. Five stars really doesn’t seem like enough. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.
I fell in love with Roman in Aldo's book but nothing could prepare me for the man he showed to be in this book.
He is a very powerful man, but under all that stoic exterior was a heart who was just waiting for someone special to come and free it.
Effie was put in Roman's path by accident but once he had her, he was not letting her go. It was so much fun to read how the big powerful man was fighting his feelings for her. She was a good balance for his life and even though on paper they shouldn't work, they were match made in heaven.
Every single minute spent reading this story was worth it. It brought me emmens joy to see them get their HEA and if I've read a morally Grey character that deserves happiness it would be Roman.

I love when Melanie Moreland writes a tough, broody hero and delight when we finally see him crack, but she outdid herself this time. Roman was sure there was too much dark in him to ever love anyone, but from the second he crossed paths with Effie, he was loving her the entire time and never realized it. I loved his transformation that he was so unaware of and Effie's quiet but fierce strength as she saw Roman for the man he never would have imagined he really was. Aldo and Vi were an amazing bonus and I was right on the edge of my seat with every turn of the page.
Morally gray is totally my favorite color when it comes to Melanie's heroes. All the stars for Roman and his little tiger.
This is fire. Effie is innocent but so strong. Roman is far from innocent but naive in the important ways. And misplaced guilt might be what first pulls him toward Effie, but the love Roman insists he can’t feel is what binds. He just has to admit it and quit fighting the pull long enough to keep her.
Effie is a little surprising. She may seem quiet and meek, but she’s smart and stubborn and unafraid of the hard truths in Roman’s world. I mean, she discovers the one secret Roman would give anything for her not to find out and manages her rightfully earned freak out to communicate and listen. Roman also knows just how lucky he is to have her, and he’s determined to prove it now that he knows she’s his heart. But some other lies come to light also, and now it’s a question of who can save who first.
This is an excellent tale of a guy who thinks he’s too cold or damaged to love until he meets his One. And the story of a woman who figured she isn’t worth much to anyone until the man who truly sees her is begging for a chance at forever. So enjoy it because you won’t be sorry you spent time with these two.
A roller-coaster ride of emotions, switching from the soft tone of a love story to the adrenaline rush of a thriller. This story captivated me and had me on the edge of my seat. I loved the raw honesty of this story. I loved the chemistry. I loved watching Effie & Roman navigate life together. You need to read this duet and experience it for yourself....So good!
Roman, Roman, Roman…..oh how the mighty fall when love is involved. This book is absolutely one of my very favorites from Ms Moreland (don’t get testy on me Richard….you’re still my first fav). This is a story of one man seeking redemption for an error that cost an innocent person to be harmed. It’s the story of a man feeling a connection but never knowing that the connection is his heart falling hard. He is a tough but fair man. He protects his family at all costs. But what he never expected to find in life comes in the form of a tiny but fierce woman named Effie. I laughed, I cried, the emotions were so strong for this couple! Absolutely one of my favorite series!!
Giving this book 5 stars does not even come close to telling the readers how phenomenal this book was. From the opening lines to the very last page the reader is taken on another Melanie Moreland ride that is filled a beautifully written story, filled with characters that we will all fall in love with and then add in just the right amount of spark and angst to keep us all on our toes. Ms. Moreland has a knack for sucking the reader in and not letting them go. This series wil be one that will be read and re-read again and again. Superb writing!!
What to say? Roman’s extreme stubbornness is part of what make him so charming. A man so steadfast in his convictions, he’s unable or unwilling to acknowledge what he’s feeling and thinking. Effie proves to be a saint, willing to let him flounder while he unsuccessfully tries to recognize and accept the truth that is before him. Always believing life will be one way and unable to accept his fate has shifted. If I thought Aldo was a cinnamon roll, I’m not sure what to call Roman. You need to read the Men of the Fall series to understand. I promise you won’t regret it.
This book!!! Lovvvvved it so much I wanna read it again!!!!!
Roman and Effie. Roman, the boss, mafia dude, quiet, hard working and totally not falling for Effie is he??!! Romantic suspense with heart tugging moments, with scenes that’ll make you giggle and just overall such a good read. I live for her romantic suspense/morally gray characters, I want more!
Melanie Moreland continues to delight me with her romantic stories - while also continuing to torment and tease me on the way to her happily ever afters. Roman is the second book in the Men of the Falls series. We got right hand man, Aldo’s, story in the first book and now it’s time for Roman to meet his match and go kicking and screaming into love.
Roman is a stern, serious and successful casino owner and business man - oh and head of a mafia syndicate. It’s that last fact that probably keeps him so private and alone. If you’ve read Aldo - which you do not need to have done to enjoy this story - then we’ve already had glimpses of Roman’s lighter side, but in case we’ve forgotten who he really is, we’re reminded of the fact that Roman is a lethal, ruthless man.
Which is why I was so ridiculously delighted when we’re introduced to Effie - a small spitfire of a woman who is Roman’s opposite in every way. She’s fierce and smart but not too proud to cry when things get too tough. And boy do they get tough for her. But I liked her immensely and was rooting for her the whole book through. She wasn’t overly sassy - which could have easily happened to push back against Roman’s control - but I felt she was a real person. Basically, she had me at her love of reading and her worry over who would water her plants when she had to leave her apartment for a while!
Now back to Roman. What to say about him? He’s everything that his description says he is - but every minute with Effie sees his defences crumbling as he fights against the feelings that she’s making him feel. I’m not sure why I like it when my heroes suffer as they fall in love but it seems to be catnip for me. And no-one fought as hard as Roman did against falling in love - he went kicking and screaming, getting angry and raging. T’was delightful! But despite the whole mafia thing, he’s a good man and despite wanting to give him a good kick up the rear with his protestations that he wasn’t capable of love, I was rooting for him, too.
Effie and Roman are a great, if unusual, couple. The baker and the head of the mafia syndicate. But they worked and I loved how they filled the other out - helping Roman to be more calm and Effie to be more bold. The sex scenes were hot but also full of feeling and although scattered throughout the book - they fit in perfectly with the story.
And there’s no getting away with the fact that this is a mafia book - something that does not usually float my boat. But if I was ever to get into the sub-genre, then I would hold this book up as how to do it. It wasn’t too gratuitous but there was still that air of menace that showed that Roman was a dangerous man. There was killing, sure, but I could rationalise it all. And the mafia setting did give the book some action to sit alongside Roman and Effie’s love story.
Melanie Moreland has given us another book that gives us a hint of her Men of Hidden Justice but with enough differences to keep it fresh and interesting. I love her storytelling - her way of getting into the heads of her characters and getting us into the world that she builds. This was another book that I was bereft to find that I had finished as the feeling I got when reading was still there well after the last page. Definitely another recommended read. 5 stars from me.
Roman is a wealthy businessman who is busy 24/7. He owns hotels and casinos in Canada. He finds out someone stole 50k from his casino and once he finds her he demands the money back, with interest. She offers up her virgin sister instead of interest. Roman is disgusted and denies her offer.
Driving to meet up with his brother for dinner, he pasts the bakery of the woman’s sister who stole from him. He stops randomly and gets a bagel. Meeting that woman’s sister, Effie, he instantly feels a pull to her. He comes back the following day and gives her his card. Effie’s confused but knows her half sister is in with dangerous people so she takes it She doesn’t know if Roman is a good man or a bad one but the pull she feels for him, she knows she should keep the card.
Effie is always giving her sister money to help her get out of bad situations. When her sister demands 70k to be free, Effie denies her. She doesn’t have the money. That night her sister pounds on her door, when Effie opens up, she gets attacked. Beaten and tied up in an underground room by her sister and the bad men she is connected with. Roman’s card has a tracker in it and it goes off. He ends up showing up and saving Effie.
Roman states he needs her to be with him and his Casino for Effie’s safety. She knows he’s powerful and he will protect her from her sister and whoever is trying to get money from her sister’s scams! Over time, Roman suggests they marry. If they do, Effie instantly has a protection due to his name and his power. He reminds her he won’t love her but will give her money, safety and a family if she wanted.
Tropes: Billionaire Virgin FMC Mafia Marriage of Convenience Forced Proximity
"Try to put your heart first. You will find great rewards when you do." Nonna's wise words
Roman is the last man standing and the women that knocks on his bum is Effie. Roman is trying to get money owned from her evil sister Marianne and with his frustration he let some dangerous info slip...no spoilers. Just from meeting Marinna he checked in on her sister Effie and soon as he saw her something came over him and tells her not to help her sister. It's her problem not hers and he didn't want her to lose money.
I did not expect Roman to be that caring at the first moment with Effie. It just show just how much she affected him without her knowing.
Effie SURPISED ME me the most with standing up to Roman when he got a tiny bit over protective and she can sense how dagerous he is. Has a good heart and takes care of her employees. I love the back story behind the bakery in memory of her mam ♥️
"Your memories are safe, Little Tiger. Nothing is lost that you loved."
Aldo & Vi made me laugh sooo much. They were taking small digs at Roman always "I never settle down" etc UNTIL he walks into a bakery called Bagels & Bites owned by Effie. I really recommend you read Aldo book 1st because you understand the whole story of Roman resistance to a girlfriend and the strong bound he has with his brothers AND THE AMAZING Nonna 🥰
Forced proximity romance, steamy moments when the heart learns what it wants and suspense is a war coming or can ot be avoided!?
"There is always a choice."
We see a few characters make their own choices and not every choice is a good one but right out evil...no spoilers
Melanie knocked it out of the park with this mafia romance that teases and flirts with darkness. She's so brilliant in the way she creates her stories and writes her characters. Absolutely devoured Roman and Effie's like my life depended on it.
You have the stoic, broody, cold-blooded mafia boss, Roman, who doesn't do love or relationships of any kind. Never gets to close to anyone but family. Then there's simple, kind, bakery owner, Effie, who's thrown to his enemies due to an accidental slip up on his part. He can't help but save her and protect her from the monsters of his world. The rest of the ride is spicy, emotional, and so very addicting that you won't be able to put this book down.
To me, nothing is more perfect than when a book has a MMC that is hardened to the world due to his past traumas and then absolutely melts for his woman. I go feral EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Another favorite part is when a powerful MMC thinks love is a myth and that he can control his emotions, be completely and utterly powerless to love and Melanie encompassed that perfectly. Watching the way Effie showed him there was more to life than power and money and control was a beautiful thing to watch unfold. To me, she was his perfect match, despite how opposite they were and I loved their chemistry through the entire story.
If you love a little dark and a lot of spicy mafia romance with forced proximity , LITERAL touch her and die moments, opposites attract, found family, fake relationship, and more, then I highly recommend you pick this one up!
Roman is the second in Melanie Moreland Men of the Falls duet a Canadian underworld protector romance set in Niagara Falls. Roman Costas didn't want to be his father's son. When his mum died, his choice was taken from him. When his dad dies leaving his empire to Roman, he is able to regain his life. Reducing the morally grey aspects & building the legitimate activities. It is ironically the less savoury parts of his business are ultimately and roundaboutly what leads him to Effie. There is no aspect of Effie's life that would have led her into Roman's world until he walked into her diner following an unpalatable interaction with her rotten sister. With her life at risk, Roman's strong moral compass forces him to protect her with every tool in his arsenal. With Effie under Roman's protection, our reticent hero is acting in ways that are so unorthodox for him. Believing himself incapable of love following his father's actions, Roman interprets his actions as guilt. I love Roman he's such a strong, powerful man, but he has such little understanding of his own emotions. It was so sad to see him obviously in love with Effie for so long but not grasping what he was feeling. I'm not normally a fan of mafia type stories, but Melanie's are different. She writes them in a much less sensational manner it's about the people & their relationships, the violence isn't glorified or romantised. I was totally hooked on every second of this story, the twists, the turns, the action, the romance & the angst. It was all just prefect. Melanie's Canadian grey at its absolute finest.
"I can't get your voice out of my head...I can't stay away from you. You are all I think about. Worry about. Your opinion matters to me."
Roman Costas doesn't believe love is for him. However, nothing prepared him for Effie Warner. From the moment he sees her, he doesn't realise that she will be the game changer he never saw coming.
"I was lost in a sea of sensation and emotion. Anger bled into lust. Tension into dominance. Uncertainty into the knowledge this woman was mine."
Even though I met Roman in Aldo's story. I was not ready for him! Gah! He was a thrilling hero - commanding, demanding, protective and SO DARN HOT! He was completely captivated by his Little Tiger. Effie was sweet but feisty, innocent but intrepid. She owned him without realising it. He broke all his usual habits for her. I adored that he knew she wasn't his type but she fit him perfectly. I couldn't get enough of these two!
Roman Costas was raised to be a leader. His father tried to drill the humanity out of him and his brother and although he wasn’t successful, Roman was left with a skewed vision of himself.
“Men like me don’t love.”
When Roman inadvertently puts Effie in the line of danger, he jumps in to rescue and keep her safe.
“He took. He ordered. He commanded, and he got what he wanted.”
Effie is strong, smart and beautiful. She doesn’t want to settle, she wants a real love and a full life and has to convince Roman that he can have it all too. -5 Stars-
Okay Melanie has become my go-to reader for escape reads. I have been avoiding mafia/ morally grey characters but if it’s written by Melanie I am going to read it. I loved the setting of this book. A man who doesn’t want to be in a relationship, a woman who is stuck in a problem her sister created. The solution? His protection in exchange of their fake marriage. He feels guilty for what she is going through but it’s a plus one that his marriage is going to make his grandma happy. The opposite worlds, age gap, touch her and I won’t mind offing you vibes. It was fun to read.
Love Roman the Warrior ❤️❤️ #Bagels&Bites #EffieCostas #TakeMeToTheFalls #Canada🇨🇦 #Casino #HowTheMightyHaveFallen #Feelings #CatchingFeelings #Aldo&Vi
Roman, his older brother Luca and his best friend Aldo run a few casinos and hotels in Canada. One night a woman named Marianne tries to run away from a debt she owes the casino. She doesn’t have the money, so she tried to sell off her sister Effie, claiming Effie is a virgin and it will settle her debt. Disgusted by what Marianne suggests, he tells her to go to someone else with that type of offer. One day on a detour around the city, Roman sees the bagel restaurant Effie owns, so he decides to go in it. He sees Effie and is instantly attracted to her. He tells her to watch out for her sister.
Next thing he knows Effie gets kidnapped by these disgusting brothers called the Santini’s. Roman finds out where she is and he rescues her. He takes her back to his hotel and keeps her there until the threat against her is gone. During that time Roman and Effie get romantically involved.
I enjoyed this story, Roman fought his feelings throughout most of the book, but you can see how utterly besotted and obsessed he was of Effie.
Effie’s sister Marianne was a huge piece of shit, and she had always hated Effie.
It was similar to the first book, but a little more fleshed out. But I also feel like the books I’ve read of this author always have a hero who is obsessed with the heroine but constantly insisting he can’t/won’t be in love with her.
I felt like it was repetitive how Roman says he can offer her everything except love. And I feel like this heroine, Effie, and others just try to accept this. I was almost wishing for a breakup or some kind of stand against it.
It also holds my dreaded virgin/experienced trope. It was kind of integral to the plot here, at least, but bleh. At least Roman was never in love or had relationships.
I did like the peek of other characters, how Effie tries to adapt to her new world, and how Roman tries to change his life, too.
Overall, there were parts that were sweet, I found it easy to read, and there’s some moments of tension and action.
It wasn’t my favorite but I think it was a little better than book one and was still enjoyable!

I loved the mystery of Roman from the first book and I loved the conclusion to this duet. “Roman” is a steamy, thrilling and sweet romantic suspense that I could not stop reading once I started.
Roman is thirty-six and runs a very successful hotel and casino in Toronto. He uses his legitimate business to help cover up some of his not so legitimate businesses that have been in the family for generations. Roman is King and no one messes with him. Effie Warner is a bakery owner and has worked hard building her bakery, especially after her mother passed away. Then her half-sister does the unthinkable, sells her to a crime lord to pay off her debt to Roman. Once Roman finds out, he is livid and rescues Effie and immediately puts her under his protection. As Effie heals from her kidnapping, Roman is there helping her recover. The two grow close and a chemistry between forms.
This duet has been absolutely amazing and I loved Roman and Effie’s story. Roman is a man that is feared by most but is a good man underneath. He cares deeply for his Nonna and his family. He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty for his business, especially when someone wrongs him. And the way he cared for Effie was so swoon worthy and just melted my heart. He was so kind and tender with her. I loved Effie from the beginning and admired her strength throughout this whole book. What her sister did was unthinkable and my jaw dropped when I found out what she did. But with her determination and strength, she overcame it and was able to find herself again. Roman and Effie had great banter and a connection that was undeniable. There were lots of scenes with Aldo and Violet which made me happy and really brought his duet full circle. There was lots of action and lots of tender moments for an amazing story. The ending was so sweet and wrapped up this duet perfectly.
John Lane and Maxine Mitchell were fabulous as Roman and Effie. John’s narration was growly and protective yet tender which is exactly how Roman is. Maxine brought all of Effie’s strength and caring personality to life perfectly. I love listening to John Lane and Maxine Mitchell narrated together, their styles complement each other so well.
Roman and Effie, what a couple. I love this side of Melanie’s world, a little more dark but not so dark. Roman so serious, protective of his family and focus on his business. Then Effie came to his life and changed everything, everything. He lost his mind for her, started to have feelings for someone not family, is a little overprotective because he didn’t know how to handle the attraction. I love how Aldo teasing him in every chance he gets. And specially the humming song lol. I love it so much. I love the connection between Effie and Vi. All the twists and turns are just perfect. I love this story and want more books like this one from Melanie, please and thank you.
If you don’t like a growly, protective alpha hero with a heart of gold, look elsewhere for your next five-star read. Roman Costas is a cold, calculating, powerful man who most men fear and the law fails to touch. His skills and business acumen have made The Maples the premier casino and hotel in the Niagara Falls area.
When Roman makes a deal that unwittingly puts Effie Warner in danger, she immediately becomes his responsibility and is under his protection. Effie is an independent woman with dreams she's making into reality, so you can imagine how she might respond to pushy, overbearing Roman. But as circumstances evolve, the danger comes too close and she has no choice but to trust him.
Just when I think I’ve seen her best, Moreland ups her game and, with a pen dipped in enchantment and pages sprinkled with magic, she gives us Roman Costas. With the power and attitude of Richard Van Ryan from The Contract series and the heart and soul of Logan from Heart Strings, my own heart was lost at the hands of Roman and Effie.
The drama and danger are intense and anxious. The love that grows between Roman and Effie is just as intense but poignant, tender, and so endearing. I loved this so much I wish it were a series rather than a duet. High stakes, retribution, and found family are an intoxicating mix, and I need more of these phenomenal characters. Morally gray fan or not, I bet you can’t read this one without falling for Roman and Effie. The house always wins, but with this masterful, unforgettable romance, so will you!
I've been looking forward to reading Roman's story and I fell in love! Roman and Effie are a perfect balance. Roman is a very hard exterior masculine male, while Effie has a delicate yet strong feminine vibe to her.
Roman is a classic "I don't do love" man that cares for his family and the employees of his casino. When he accidentally causes an innocent women to be taken & sold into an illegal business, he feels extremely guilty and will do anything to rescue her.
Effie has made a life for herself with her diner/bagel shop. Despite her older half sister(Marianne) always trying to ruin her path. Marianna in order to payoff her debt to Roman sells Effie to the highest bidder.
Once Roman saves Effie his guilt doesn't allow him to let her go and looks after Effie until she's better. Soon the guilt turns into affection. He's a complete and better person with Effie around.
They got through many challenges, but have finally accepted their feelings and showed each other the love they have for one another.
