I love Beverly Lewis. I love this new Home to Hickory Hollow series-that-isn't-a-series. But, I am sorry, I did not love this story. I'm kinda bummed about that, because I was really looking forward to it based on the descriptions and everything. I just felt like the gripping action happened in the first 1/5 of the book, and then it was this long, tedious drawn-out story. I didn't really care about Mandy (the protagonist's sister), because I felt she just needed to suck it up and live the life she chose. I was super annoyed with Tessie Ann hiding something that was pretty damn obvious to most everyone -- the drama just felt stunted and drawn out and petty. I feel like Tessie's story was a vignette that could have been resolved a lot quicker, with a fresher, more interesting story about "God's Special Children" coming around with perhaps Mandy or any one of the other M sisters rather than the bland and saccharine ending that did happen (Considering that this genre is supposed to have happy endings; that it's like eating a candy bar, it's pretty bad when the ending is too saccharine for even me.) Even Ella Mae just wasn't herself to me in this book. I guess everyone has an off story, but when it's a powerhouse author, it's a huge disappointment. Maybe Beverly needs to take a break, go stay in Lancaster for a bit, and come back to writing with fresh eyes.

I loved the previous books in the Home to Hickory Hollow series but this one fell flat for me. After seeing that Beverly Lewis has another two books coming out in 5 or 6 months, I have to wonder if she is writing and publishing too fast. I would rather wait a year for a quality read then read disappointing books like this every 3 months. All this book needs is more time spent editing and fine-tuning. Churning out a new book every 3 months is not enough time to write a good book.

I have devoured every Amish fiction book that author Beverly Lewis has written. Each published book gets better and better.

Once again Beverly Lewis made her characters real ones. I walked with them, I visited with them in their homes, I suffered with them when trials came upon them.

I was hooked on this story from the very beginning. My emotions most certainly came to life. I smiled during tender moments, I went through grief, I even wept in several places.

God plays a very important part in the lives of Amish people. This is one of the reasons I love reading stories written by this author. She brings out their faith with prayer and scripture throughout the pages of each book. The Amish most always seeks the Will of God in every decision that is made.

When we disobey, when we keep secrets, and when we try to work things out on our own, it is never a good thing. There are many lessons to be learned in the story of The Last Bride.

I loved this book. It is deserving of 5 stars plus. I highly recommend this book to everyone that reads this review. You will not be disappointed!

The Last Bride, is the fifth and final stand-alone novel in the Home to Hickory Hollow series. I for one, will miss Hickory Hollow and all the wonderful gut stories!

I won this ARC from LibraryThing in exchange for my honest review. The opinions expressed are mine alone.

My Personal Rating-
Three (and a half)

If you read other’s reviews of this book not all of them are very kind, because they’re looking at it from an adult Point of View not a 18/19 year old which Tessie is. I found “The Last Bride” very interesting and the plot twist blew me away! I mean, I did not see that coming!

Good book. Tessie and Marcus have been in love for a long time, but no matter what they do, they can't get Tessie's father to approve their courtship. After months of trying, the two secretly marry at the county courthouse, then return home to live as singles. Marcus continues to try to gain Ammon's approval. Meanwhile, they seize every opportunity they can to be together. After several more weeks, Marcus is ready to just announce their marriage and face the consequences, when he is killed in an accident. Tessie is devastated. Worse yet, she finds out she's pregnant, and without the marriage certificate she can't reveal her marriage.

I ached for Tessie throughout most of the book. First, to be denied marriage to the one she loved, to the point where they felt they must marry in secret. Then the following weeks of living apart, when all she wanted was to be a proper wife to Marcus. I completely understood her frustration. Then to have him die so tragically before they can reveal their marriage left her in a kind of limbo. She's a widow, even though no one knows it, and because of that they don't understand the depth of her grief. As she tries to go on with her life, she discovers that she's pregnant. She doesn't know what to do, so she hides her pregnancy as long as she can. Without proof of her marriage she is in danger of losing her status within the church. I was really worried for her and how things would go with the church elders. There was an interesting twist at the end that made a huge difference.

Added to the mix is the young man that Tessie's father wanted for her. He is still interested in Tessie and makes sure that she knows it. Because of her circumstances, she isn't too sure he knows what he'd be getting into. I really liked Levi. He was kind and patient with her uncertainty. I also liked his belief in her when she told him the whole story. He also had a very different personality than Marcus, one that I think was better suited to her anyway.

Also intertwined throughout the book was the story of Tessie's sister Mandy and her husband Sylvan. Mandy had followed her father's dictates and married his choice for her, even though she cared for another. At the beginning of the book she is unhappy in her marriage. Her husband is rather distant, they still haven't been able to conceive, and she needs something to distract her. A friend wants her to join in opening a shop selling Amish goods. This really appeals to Mandy, who sees it as a way to expand her world, but she's afraid that Sylvan won't approve. Over the course of the book, the slowly learn to communicate with each other, with Sylvan taking a surprisingly proactive approach. By the end, both have found unexpected happiness in their match.

There was an unexpected theme also, that of the problem of birth defects in the Amish community. Because there is so much intermarriage, the instances of serious genetic problems has been growing worse. Partway through the book, Tessie discovers that the reason her father was against her marriage to Marcus was that they are more closely related than is wise, opening them up to greater possibility of that happening to them. With her pregnancy, this adds even more stress, as Tessie worries about the future health of her baby.

I really liked the ending and seeing how things worked out for the various people in the book. I also enjoyed the occasional appearance/mention of characters from previous books. Ellie Mae, the wisewoman, is always interesting to spend time with. I also loved the mention of Katie Lapp, who was the first of Beverly Lewis's characters I read about, and who got me hooked on her as an author.

Personal Response:
I absolutely loved this book. It was very well detailed and pieced together. If your interested in different lifestyles, and times of living this is a great book to read because of the diversity. Also, it talks about cooking, the homemade things people would make, and the clothes they'd make or how they'd wash them. Overall, this was a very educational book.

Plot Summary:
Tessie Miller is the last sister in her family to get married. She has her eyes set on Marcus King, an Amish man with blonde hair and delicate blue eyes. Her father, on the other hand, disapproves and has his eyes on another young man. Tessie is unwilling to marry her father's pick, elopes to an English country to marry Marcus. Thinking all will go well she goes back and pretends nothing happened, as her family is unaware of what took place. Until things go wrong and Tessie is left in a dark hole, being forced to reveal the truth to her parents, and town. Will things in Tessie's life get better? Or will things only get worse?

Characterization:
Tessie (like stated) is the last and youngest sister in her family to get married. She is a beautiful, petite, blue-eyed rebel, who takes matters into her own hands, thinking it's what she needs to do, and what's best for her. Marcus King is a hardworking Amish man who catches Tessie's eye. Tessie also happens to catch his. With his blonde hair, and blue eyes he drops Tessie's heart.

Recommendation
I recommend this book to a mature audience. It's a tragic love story, which in some places is difficult to read. Overall it's a good book to read because it teaches the consequences to some of your decisions and how they affect the people around you. How a secret will always come out. Maybe not right away, but eventually it will.

The author has been an avid reader for as long as she can remember and it shows in her writing.
I have been interested in the Amish way of life since I visited the Pennsylvania Dutch country. Their lifestyles are truly inspiring.
If you’ve ever had a desire for certain things to happen, (and I am sure most of us have) I hope you read “The Last Bride”. Sometimes things happen beyond our wildest dreams.
I love how God is a constant in this novel. I know throughout my life I have talked to the Good Lord a-plenty. As it says in “The Last Bride” - ‘It wouldn’t be schmaert not to.’”
I can almost see the one-room schoolhouse and feeding the chickens.
I’ve fed quite a few chickens in my youth.
The warmth of this novel and the courtship will pull you right into your deepest feelings of love and compassion.

Title: THE LAST BRIDE
Author: Beverly Lewis
Publisher: Bethany House
April 2014
ISBN 978-0764211980
Genre: Amish Women’s Fiction
Series: Home to Hickory Hollow

Of her Old Order parents' five daughters, Tessie Miller is the last to marry. She has her heart set on Amishman Marcus King, but Tessie's father opposes the match.

Impetuously, Tessie and Marcus elope to the English world, then return to Hickory Hollow to live as singles, trusting they'll convince the Millers to give their love a chance over time. But when the unthinkable happens, Tessie faces the almost-certain censure of the People. Will she find a reason for hope in spite of her desperate plight?

THE LAST BRIDESMAID is one of the books in Ms. Lewis’ Home to Hickory Hollow series. This book had a good premise, but unfortunately it wasn’t delivered. The characters were flat and one dimensional, the choices made by some of the characters were unbelievable, and the romance between Levi and Tessie Ann is just plain dead. No sparks. I have to admit I liked his stance. I thought maybe I would shed some tears in this book when I predicted (correctly) where the story would go, but no. Even those scenes were flat.

Ms. Lewis has been a favorite author of many for a long time. This book, for me, fell totally flat but I wanted to like it. I did smile though, Author Laura V. Hilton wrote about the Amish man swaps in her books, The Amish of Seymour and took flack for—people saying they don’t exist. They do. And Her Royal Highness, the Queen of Amish fiction, mentioned them in this book. If you are looking for new Amish authors to read, may I suggest Cindy Woodsmall, Ruth Reid, Laura V. Hilton, Shelley Shepard Gray, Tricia Goyer, and a few others.

2 stars. Available in print, hardcover, ebook, and audio. 336 pages.

I obtained this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

I used to read Amish fiction all the time and Beverly Lewis was the first (and only, for a while there) author I read. I was drawn away by her cozy style of writing about the Amish and their plain lifestyle. I tried to talk Mr. Measure into becoming Amish, but the eye roll told me it probably wasn't meant to be.

Anyway, I read everything she put out there for a while, but then they all kind of starting feeling like the same kind of book, but with different names. So I dropped away for YEARS.

When Bethany House had her newest book available on their blogger review site, I thought I'd give her a new try and see if her style had changed any in 15+ years.

So when The Last Bride arrived in the mail, I was excited, but hesitant. But I'm glad to say that it was a really good book! It read smooth and cozy, just like I remembered her stories reading, but this one had a complicated twist that I was not expecting at all. And the story kept getting deeper and more intriguing to the point that I didn't want to stop reading. I was pleasantly surprised.

It has all the draw of her old books, and this one is a stand alone book, based on the same area and some of the same characters from her original series (the first one I ever read) that drew me back to warm happiness... like seeing old friends again. I think I will definitely pick up the other Home to Hickory Hollow books. You don't need to read the original series for this to make sense, but if you have, this book feels comfy and like coming home again.

Like all Amish daughters, Tessie Miller has tried her whole life to obey her father but she doesn't understand why he would rather have Levi Smucker court her instead of Marcus King - after all she is in love with Marcus not Levi. Her sister Mandy married the man their father wanted her to marry but Tessie is more inclined to follow her own heart. Little does she realize that the choices she makes will change her life forever.

I usually like Beverly Lewis's books and I've enjoyed the Home to Hickory Hollow series, especially the last book “The Secret Keeper”, but I was disappointed in “The Last Bride”. I tried, but I just didn't like Tessie and at times I wanted to shake her. When one of the characters said towards the end of the book about Tessie “Why didn't she say so?”, I was ready to scream “Yes, why didn't she???” Her whole storyline seemed a bit contrived and dragged on. Levi disappeared fir large chunks of the book and he never really developed as a character for me. The Mandy/Sylvan storyline worked much better for me – her heartache was very real and it was interesting to read and watch her relationship with Sylvan grow. Again that storyline was a bit contrived at times but much better than Tessie’s.

“The Last Bride” is the fifth and final book in the Home to Hickory Hollow series - it's too bad the series didn't end on a better note.

Beverly Lewis so ably navigates us into Pennsylvania-Dutch territory and lets hungry readers taste what the "slower" life is like. Much of Amish life revolves around family and faith. When Tessie Ann rebels against her father's wishes concerning her beau, a slow but sure uproar begins in the community. Loved by two men, Tessie must choose whom to love and whom to let go. However, Tessie is not the only daughter who feels the iron grip of her austere father's hand. Married Mandy dutifully obeyed Ammon and married the man he handpicked. Like Tessie, her heart harbors resentment and hidden feelings for a former beau, which impedes happiness in her marriage. Struggling against themselves, the Ordnung, the bishop and God; will the girls be able to trust their heart issues and complications to the Almighty, or will impatience and stubbornness divide a family and community?
Lewis masterfully shows both the awe-inspiring, "I want that simple life" part of the Amish, as well as the stern rule of the bishop and head of families. Yet Lewis also tempers that austere glimpse with glimpses of great family love and loyalty and a church family quick to forgive and restore.
Wonderbaar!!

I read this book in one sitting which isn't easy to do since my time is limited. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the back story of Mandy and Sylvan. It was a good story but really wasn't made clear as to why they were struggling and then it seems like she fell in love with him very fast with no explanation. Maybe that story will be in another book. Also it seemed Tessie forgot her first love in just as short of time. If only my broken heart could mend that fast! I know the Amish books like to have a happy ending but I was hoping this one wouldn't. It had the potential to go in another direction on two separate issues but everything was wrapped up with a nice bow at the end per usual. All in all a great book that people will enjoy.

Another bittersweet, Amish tale from Beverly Lewis. The Last Bride, book five in the Home to Hickory Hollow series, tells an intricate story of a forbidden romance, serious, hidden secrets, tragic accidents, and deep love. I totally wasn't expecting the big twist, and was disappointed by it. But I was eventually cheered up by Levi, :). Tessie's story was beautiful, overall. A tale of redemption, forgiveness, and waiting on the Lord.

Though not my favorite from the Home to Hickory Hollow series, I still found The Last Bride an interesting and enjoyable read. The last paragraph was so sweet! Brought me to tears almsot! :)

Beverly Lewis is an excellent author in the genre of the Amish people. She describes their lifestyle so clearly that you feel you are within a heartbeat of the action. The characters are developed so fully, that they are entirely believable. You meet them and almost become instant friends.

This final book in the story walks you through twists and turns that elicited deep emotions. There were issues at bay that are not normally discussed in an Amish tale. These hidden issues were finally brought to light and aptly addressed.

My preference for clean and wholesome are met wholeheartedly with this tale.

There are a lot of expectations and traditions brought forth in this book that I wasn't aware of before. I was especially curious about the rise in genetic defects in Amish babies; that's a topic I haven't read about in other Amish fiction. There were a few unexplained mysteries that went unresolved by the end of the book. I haven't read the other Hickory Hollow books so perhaps Lewis works those out in other titles. The romance part of this book seemed to drag on for ages and it was difficult for me to stay interested in that storyline. The rest of the book, though, was quite interesting. I received this book to review; the opinions shared here are 100% mine.

The Last Bride by Beverly Lewis was a fairly good read. I was drawn into Tessie's story, but did not enjoy all the switching back and forth between her POV and her sister Mandy's POV. Tessie is in love with Marcus, but her father forbids any marriage between them. Without knowing her father's reasons , Tessie and Marcus elope, but carry on living as singles until a tragedy occurs.
This is a good book for a rainy day.

The Last Bride had a lot of good secrets with excellent complications. Tessie's story is filled with romance, struggle, and heartbreak followed by uncertainty, repentance, and hope. Not only are there the romantic trials, but the focus on the genetic issues in the Amish community made for a really interesting read. Mandy's story of growth and love with her husband made for another heartwarming ending. It was sad to see how despondent she was over not conceiving for months after her marriage, but I really enjoyed how the love blossomed between her and her husband first before anything else came about. Not telling anyone about her secret marriage or no one believing her was a bit tedious as a theme. It is more dramatic to have the marriage license revealed at the very end when it was needed most, but it is a fairly predictable element. Everything ended up really well, and the conclusion left me feeling happy I was able to enjoy this story.

I have not read the other books in this series but found that I did not need to, in order to enjoy this one. Tessie Miller was the last of the Miller's five daughters to marry. She chose to elope with Marcus King because her father opposed their marriage. Mr. Miller had done a chart of families and found problems with children born to distance relative which the Kings and Millers were. He did not tell his children about this fact.

When Marcus dies, Tessie wears black as his widow even though no one else knows the truth. When the Amish world discovers she is pregnant, they want her to confess her "sin". She only confesses that she disobeyed her parents as she did not have proof of her marriage.

To find out how Marcus died and what happens to Tessie at Church, read the book.

I picked up this book from a sparsely stocked hotel library on vacation, and the short description on the back left me thinking this book had a little potential. This was also the first fiction book I have read in about a year, so I was looking for a book to recapture my interest in the genre. This book failed to do so. The idea for the plot as an idea wasn’t awful, but the writing was so uninspiring and the characters so unbelievably one dimensional that any intrigue from the plot was ruined. It certainly wasn’t a short story and there were dramatic plot points and scenes, but they way they were written made me feel like I got absolutely nothing out of the entire book by the time I finished. Even for a vacation book, this was far too mindless to be enjoyable and is not worth your time.

I love the fictional place of Hickory Hollow but this was not my favorite of the Amish tales. It had a few twists and turns but it wasn’t an exceptional story. Lewis has lost her authenticity with the mass produce of story lines. This poor Amish girl was married... eloped, that concept is so not Amish but it leads to a heap of mess. This is a tale of patience and what a honest faith and devotion can bring. The sadness of being barren in her sister was the hardest to understand. Was it because of disobedience? Was it because she never fully surrendered to God in her marriage. I think this part of the story could have had more depth.

Ok so in this book Tessie Miller goes against her families Old World Amish and marries Marcus King in a courthouse and not before God and their people even though her parents forbade the marriage...So as time goes along they keep it secret till Marcus can get Tessie's father Ammon to agree then tragedy strikes leaving Tessie feeling alone and abondaned by Marcus and she turns up pregnant as well..along comes Levi Bailer and he has been in love with Tessie forever in the end alot of stuff happens and you have to read it to see what happens with Tessie,Levi, Mandy(Tessie's older sister) and her husband and the rest of the family and church members...

Tessie marries her love of her life Marcus unbeknownst to the church and then becomes pregnant. But unfortunately he dies, and leaves her in a pickle with the church. Without finding the marriage license, the church debates what to do thinking she has sinned by not being married. Thankfully, her sister runs into the license in the journal he kept and now she won’t be shunned anymore from the church’s members as they thought she had a baby out of wedlock.
Through this, she runs into her old childhood friend and even though he knows about her predicament he doesn’t care and still wants to marry her and give her baby also a loving home.

Love the Amish stories. So warm with love and understanding. Tessie finds herself in a fix in not knowing how to explain she and her beloved ran off and eloped. Her father was so against Tessie being with Marcus but now, with a unforeseen twist, she just doesn't know how to deal with it. Even when some are taking a hard stand there is still that love you feel among them. Thank you Beverly Lewis for letting me feel a part of this community. I will be moving right into another one of your novels now.
