James starts noticing some unexplained events occurring in his apartment and decides to start documenting them in a video journal. Struggling with financial hardships, a new born baby, the fact he and his wife Jen are alone in a foreign country, he does his best to make sense of everything, and try to steer his family towards a better life.
Unsure if what he is experiencing is due to stress, his imagination or if it is something more nefarious, he starts to doubt his own mind. With the events progressively escalating will they manage to escape Midas Court unscathed?
"“Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come..."
When a book starts with someone saying The Lord's Prayer, you can bet it's about to get good and creepy.
Do you know that feeling of needing to draw your blanket closer or wanting to sink further into your hoodie? Your hair stands on end, your spine tingles and you shudder ever so slightly, and it's not because your cold? That delightfully creepy feeling is what I look for in a book and exactly what I found in Midas Court.
Momster score: 👻👻👻👻.5
A.C. Crowne's second novella is 26 pages of anxiety-inducing creepiness and I loved it from line 1. I loved how I was reading about a guy recording his spooky goings-on. It was like reading Paranormal Activity, but with the off-camera action as well.
Loved the little bit of Maltese folklore, but I'd loved to have known more about why this was happening in James's apartment - maybe read about him doing more research on that.
Thank you A.C.Crowne for this great story. I'm gonna go turn on more lights in my house now.
Yet another amazing short story by A.C. Crowne! After enjoying Diary of A.S. that he asked me to read and review, I decided to grab up his other short stories and once again I am not disappointed! His writing is suburb and he really has a knack for sucking you into a story and making that story impactful in so few pages. Would I like more pages? Absolutely! Simply because the story being told is amazing enough that I want more.
I will point out that I wished there was a bit more information about certain things. Why did the family move into this place, when it sounds like they loved their old place so much? Why were these folklorish hauntings happening to them? Some of these questions came up but I never did get answers to them. But beyond that? This was a truly haunting, spooky story that amps up the further you read.
He tells the story of being haunted. James is interested in the paranormal; Jen, James’s wife, is not.
Their new son, Leon, is five months old. Leon is having difficulties as well—not sleeping, crying constantly…
Exhausted physically and financially, the trio have lived in the apartment for eight months now.
Emotions are amplified, especially the negative ones.
James makes video posts to document the inexplicable events.
Can definitely use a good deal of typographical tightening. And more exposition into the characters would also be helpful. Work is mentioned—but what does James actually do, as a profession? Is Jen a stay-at-home mom?
Incidents…Edgar the crow. Spirit activity. Cockroaches. il-Hares and il-Haddiera.
Mostly passable, but the last 10% is super weird. Not a big fan of the ending. Not the smoothest narrative. Too many hints of things without sufficient exploration.
I really enjoyed how the story was written. James is recording himself talking about the creepy things that are happening to him & his family in his apartment. Things just feel off at first, but progressively get worse. But is it just his imagination getting the best of him due to stress & sleepless nights? Will he and his family be able to escape the evil in their apartment before it’s too late? You have to read to find out. Great length! Perfect pace! Great writing style. If you like haunted house stories, you will enjoy this one. Excited to see what other creepy stories the author has in store!
I did not expect to be this invested in a 53 page novella! That's what Crowne's writing does..it sucks you in, becoming part of the story, getting attached to the characters..I could have read a 300 page book about Jen, James, and Leon. I also love the bit of humor from James even in the middle of questioning his sanity. There are a few things as creepy as a child staring behind your head in terror making you question what's really in the apartment with you that you cannot see..
This was beautiful, haunting, and arm-hair raising. A perfect horror novella for a rainy over-cast day. (The way I read it, and contributed to the ambience!)
This story is truly one of my biggest fears, as my own son used to look at the ceiling and scream/cry and not sleep at night in my bedroom in my old apartment 7 years ago. This story just brought me back to those scary moments I experienced while living there. This story was so spooky, well written and HEART BREAKING. my mouth literally dropped in the garage scene 😭 I can never listen to that Ed Sheeran song ever again without thinking of this story probably. Another great story by A.C. Crowne!!! Can’t wait to read more, truly great work! 💜
As a parent, it was heartbreaking reading how much the little one cried and what was happening to him. I am glad I didn’t read it in the evening, because I won’t be able to sleep 😂 Once I sat down I couldn’t put it down and had to find out the ending.. which now I wish I waited as what happened is the worst nightmare…
I’ve read somewhere that babies/infants can see things adults can’t. And I am a firm believer of that. This book just makes you believe it even more!
What a sad, beautifully haunted story. I was not expecting the roller coaster of emotions, or how invested I was going to be. It’s such a quick read but so well done. Will definitely recommend to anybody that wants a short read that will spook and rip your heart out at the same time.
