What happens when the Chief of Security wakes up as the familiar to a man who doesn’t know he’s a witch? Chaos.

Quentin Silverbrook has never really belonged anywhere. At fifteen, his parents divorced, and his father took a job in Mont de Leucoy. Now twenty-two, he hasn’t left even though there is nothing keeping him there…until he is blackmailed into watching the building over the road from the bar where he works.

With Dalmon back in England, Gerrit injured, and Everest ruling by proxy, Kaine Lenoir, the only phoenix shifter not part of the royal family in this life, is feeling the pressure to take down the Shadow Board before more people die and paranormals are exposed to humans.

One night to blow off some tension turns into a disaster when the man turns out to be his fated mate. Worse, he is an untrained mind-reading witch.

i think i like them all so far. it's decent, and i quite enjoy the universe and pheonix brothers.
this one i enjoyed because they accept that although they are mate, they will work on their relationship and feelings. attraction is there. it's undeniable, but they don't dive into a relationship as fast.
idk what i'm saying (i'm tired)

anyway, it's nice. the series is getting long for my liking, and i'll take a break before reading the last two books!

I was looking forward to learning more Kaine and Phoenix Mate is pretty enjoyable. Being the Chief of Security for the country and working closely with Dalmon to find the mole and stop the Shadow Board, leaves Kaine as isolated in an emotional bubble like Gerrit and Dalmon. He also feels disconnected from them being outside of the royal family in this incarnation and having the sense he’s always been the outsider.

Sleeping with Quentin was supposed to be an overdue outlet for his increasing frustration and fear at being outmaneuvered by the Shadow Board. Discovering his fated mate is both elating and terrifying. He loves the idea of having a mate, but the increasing danger makes Quentin a soft target. Plus, he finds Quentin at just the wrong time as the phoenixes must coordinate a plan to stop an attack that has global consequences.

Quentin was diagnosed with ADHD as a teenager because he couldn’t focus and thought he was imagining hearing thoughts, and the medication dampened his magic. He is overwhelmed at finding out about the paranormal but is quickly enthralled by being a witch. However, mind reading magic is one of the hardest to control, and that lack of control is another reason Kaine wants to keep him protected. Because Quentin knows his parents didn’t want him, he is deeply insecure about being wanted and abandoned and Kaine being absent triggers his fears. Both men are disconnected and in search of someone they can trust and love, but Quentin’s fears run too deep for him to see it.

Although Quentin and Kaine are likable characters with good chemistry, I did not find their mating troubles compelling. Quentin’s backstory isn’t as connected to the plot and his behaviors aren’t as completely understandable as Lucien and Malcolm’s. All the characters don’t need a traumatic background and Quentin’s insecurities are valid, but a relationship roadblock based on Quentin’s abandonment issues in the face of such high stakes makes him seem a little immature. I know the bond is intense and makes a person crave their mate, but Quentin’s lack of consideration of the pressure Kaine is under and why they can’t spend time together makes him seem somewhat selfish and unsympathetic.

Kaine is wrong to not have even texted Quentin, especially once Quentin got a secure phone. Also he could have explained the situation in more detail earlier, but he did explain the danger and why he’ll be temporarily absent. Quentin knows from the start that Kaine has to stop the Shadow Board or they could all die so spending time together isn’t something he can do in this moment. Even when Kaine does elucidate more about the danger and the imminent threat he's trying to avert, Quentin responds that Kaine is making excuses and that Kaine doesn’t want him just like everyone else. He doesn’t really comfort Kaine or acknowledge that Kaine has been feeling the absence too like Kaine does for him. However, Quentin is really likable, and his insecurity and struggles are very believable.

I really enjoy the plot. The machinations of the Shadow Board are great. Kaine and his brothers are always on the backfoot, but they are closing in on the mole. The conclusion is game-changing and ratchets up the stakes once again.

Phoenix Mate is the third book in the Brothers of Fire series, which continues the story of the Shadow Board and phoenixes, hinting at finding out more about Everest.

In this book, we focus on Kaine and his romance with new character, Quentin, a mind reader with no knowledge of his magic or shifters until a one-night stand results in an accidental mate bond. Kaine and Quentin were great together, very much opposites attract with a ten year age gap between them. Quentin is bright, bold and flirty in the beginning, while Kaine is dependable, serious and contained. Together, they're a great combination, with some sizzling chemistry. Quentin is also very interesting as a central character, because he's studied dead languages and has a thirst for knowledge, history and solving problems, which the entire family of phoenixes need.

It was awesome to see some history geeks getting hot and being super strong and attractive. I loved that Quentin and Kaine were both as geeky and intense as each other. I really hope we see more of Quentin getting to explore that love of history, language and his abilities in future books.

I feel like the story is split into three parts: 1) the romance, 2) the Shadow Board and 3) the overarcing plot of Olier being missing. All three are equally important to the story, but they're also interlinked, which means that the series-long plot is further advanced while providing plenty of drama for the main characters to navigate.

I found it super interesting to see Everest's POV for almost a full chapter. We've been teased for a long time about his obsession with Olier, but this book really takes his involvement in the background to the next level and that was so clever. I really liked seeing how he wove through the plot.

Overall, this was another resounding success from Nichols, weaving together the fated mates of the Familiar Mates series with the fantastic world of phoenixes from Brothers of Fire. I loved every minute and I can't wait for the next book in the series. I'd be perfectly happy if this shared world never ended.

Phoenix Mate is the third instalment of The Brothers of Fire series. Kaine Lenoir is the head of security in the thick of trying to defeat the Shadow Board when he has a fateful hookup with student Quentin Silverbrook. Fateful in that he proves to be his fated mate. Quentin is thrown head first into a world he thought only existed in fantasy fiction, a world that is deadly dangerous.

The Shadow Board is about to make its move on the Coven and the Royal Family of Mont de Leucoy. Its aim is to take control of Europe and its inhabitants, not for anyones’ benefit other than themselves. They have already coerced a number of paranormals and humans using promises of wealth and power or threats and blackmail.

Kaine and Quentin have an important part to play in helping to uncover the plot and derail it if they can. The series is developing nicely with some interesting and important side stories running parallel with the Shadow Board strand. As always, you get great characters who have to cope with difficult situations while building a relationship with the love of their life and no guarantee they will survive. The writing is always a delight to read. The characters are multi-faceted and, most definitely, not charming all the time. They have tough decisions to make and some are not going to survive. Highly re-readable! I'm not just saying that as an ARC reader having clocked up three readings already :)

As much as I enjoy reading series (thanks to LoTR in fifth grade), it can be frustrating when not only are some series-long plot lines left unresolved, but new issues or problems arise. TJ Nichols always has the primary couple reach their HEA or a very good HFN, as this is at its heart a romance, but they leave enough undone to make sure the reader will continue the series. I liked the couple in Phoenix Mate because neither of them was even thinking about finding “the one” but they adapted well to the idea, even if Kaine is not used to sharing information, which almost ruins everything. It was fun watching Quentin learn about both the paranormal world and his own place in it as a witch. The author does a good job of introducing a new paranormal ability without it seeming deus ex machina at all. One of the benefits of being in a relationship with one of the phoenixes is Quentin gains access to a hidden part of the palace library. I hope we get to see how he translates important material due to his training and course work. I was a little surprised that an issue important to Quentin did not get resolved, but there are two more books to come, so there is time for that to happen. I received a free copy of the book from the author and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Kaine Lenoir, the only phoenix shifter not part of the royal family, is feeling the pressure of taking down the Shadow Board. As the Chief of Security, he has been working long hours and knows they are close but one mistake could result in disaster. Looking to blow off some steam, he finds Quentin Silverbrook, who as it turns out is also his mate. Knowing he must keep his new mate safe and he must also take down the Shadow Board, Kaine is not at his best. Quentin isn’t so sure either as this smacks of kidnapping. Not to mention he is already being blackmailed by the Shadow Board, finds he may have some hidden powers, and cannot believe he is desiring a man he just met.

So much is going on in this book. There are surprises on every page. So many pieces are coming together and if Kaine or his men/women missed one piece, it could all come tumbling down. There are compromised employees in sensitive positions and spies everywhere. Kaine and his brothers do not know who they can trust. Phoenix Mate is filled with action, heat (in more ways than one), betrayal and surprises. All-in-all, a perfect book for those of us who enjoy that. I highly recommend this story and the series.

how I missed the phoenix brothers

I love this series, but I’m going to start with my chief complaint and what keeps this from five star ratings. 1) a cliffhanger ending (despise them) and 2) this felt a little more like an unfinished story than a complete novel. The entire thing takes place over a week (ish). The climax of the story was almost an after thought and while some forward progress on the shadow guild has been made it still is a lot of who done what and why. I am not overly fond of a big bad who is so powerful and far reaching that no one is out of reach and they are all grand master chess players with characters lives. In other words, I need more story to my novels if they are going to be more than spice. (This one had it but it wasn’t the best all of the story hence why I want more plot) it’s a decent stop gap/ bridge to the next novel but I hope book 4 has more to it. I would rather wait a year for a solid installment than be given half a story. It’s still funny, well written, and the characters and their backstory is fascinating.

I want to thank GRR for provide the ARC.

Phoenix Mate is the thrid book of the Brothers of Fire series. The author is new to me. I like the writing, the characters are loveable and the story is interesting. It is recommendable to read the two previous ones, because there is a common thread in them and with only reading this one, the background story would not be understood.

This book focuses on Kaine, the head of security at Mont de Leucoy, a fictional kingdom where supernatural beings abound. There are witches, shifters...

Kaine meets Quentin, a university student of ancient languages and part-time waiter and the attraction is immediate. What they don't know, at that moment, is that they are more than a one-night stand, that Quentin is more than he knows and that he will play an important role in unraveling the underlying plot that links all the books published so far.

I want to read the next book, which will have a different protagonist, but I hope that the background plot continues .

This book focuses on Kaine, a phoenix brother, but in this life he's the head of their security team and not seen as royal member of the Mont de Leucoy kingdom. He looks on the pairing of his two other brothers as OK but not a necessity for himself. All that changes when, as an observer of a Shadow Board eatery, he meets waiter Quentin, senses he's "special", and thus attracted to Quentin. Kaine's curiosity about this second nature of Quentin begins their journey. Quentin has a love of ancient languages and the chance to study the sacred journals of the Leucoy family is a lure he enfolds himself in. The evolving political twists, turns, subterfuge, apparent betrayal of the present young king Everest caused by heavy guilt, leads to emotional upheaval, even among the secondary characters. The ending isn't necessarily a HFN but a promise of great future reading. It's suggested that reading the first two books will help any reader in understanding and relating to this third book. This is my voluntary and honest review.

Book three in the Brothers of Fire series was a slow starter for me. Thirty three per cent in and we're still on the first night. By the time the action really ramped up, the book was more than half over. But the author did stuff a lot in the last half. Kaine is so used to keeping all the balls in the air, in the air. Getting a mate was the last thing he expected or needed. Quentin is amazingly patient and understanding. But a lot of that is due to a 'secret library', and books in ancient languages. A little bit of Beauty and the Beast here.
The mates have some really steamy times and a sizzling chemistry. Maybe a little less spice and a longer story? I don't care for cliffhangers. Sadly, it looks like Everest's storyline is going to stretch out over the next 2-3 books. The Shadow Board really feels like a hydra, can't wait til that's totally resolved.
Book two remains my favorite, but this is a good, quick read. Waiting for Everest's book.

This series about the phoenix mates is so interesting and this story did not disappoint. This one is focused on Kaine, Chief of Security and a Phoenix shifter, who finds his mate is Quentin. Quentin is a witch who can read minds but he does not know that he has these powers, nor is he aware that there are magical beings until he and Kaine bond after a one night stand. That is a lot. There is something unlikely about this pair and yet that is a part of why they work. They are a good compliment for one another. There is a lot going on in this book, lots of action and the Shadow Board is looming large here, it feels like something really interesting is on the verge of happening and as the overall story arc is not resolved we are left waiting for what is coming next. Still this story pulled me in and kept me hooked and waiting for the next installment.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Phoenix Mate is the third book in T.J. Nichols’ Brothers of Fire series, following a group of phoenix shifters hiding as the royal family of the tiny country of Mont de Leucoy. The books each feature a different couple, but the series has an overarching suspense plot and the books are best read in order (check out my review of the first book, Phoenix Spy, to start the series and get more background on how it connects with Nichols’ larger world). Kaine has been an interesting side character for the first two books, as the one non-royal among the group (at least in this current life) and the one who is often the “fixer” of their security problems, so I enjoyed a chance to get to know him better here.

I’m loving this series, which is going to be one for my paperback shelf. The world building is fabulous, and I love how it fits alongside the Familiar Mates series. I’m enjoying how each phoenix brother is in a different situation, including who and what their mates are.

I loved getting to know Kaine, as he hasn’t given away much in the previous books. Like his brothers, he’s feeling the pressure of his role in this lifetime. I love how he realises too late that he’s slept with a witch, and Quentin’s introduction to a world he knows nothing about.

The action scenes are tense, with the Shadow Board being a formidable enemy, who won’t be taken down easily.

I enjoyed catching up with characters from previous books, and I love the mystery surrounding Everest. I’m already hanging out for the next book.

Wow, really didn't see that coming. So we have Quentin who doesn't know anything about magic or the paranormal community, but he is a mind reader. He has also studied dead languages and I'm hoping that really plays a bigger part in the journals that the Brothers are no longer able to read. The Shadow Board is on course to attack the Coven & the Brothers. I can't wait to see them all destroyed. I love all the characters and the new ones that we are introduced to, who work really well with everyone else. This author does not write unnecessary drama just to move a story forward. Everything has it's place in the story and is there for a very good reason. I so can't wait to for the next book. This series is one that I will most definitely be re-reading in the future.

4 stars. Read the first of the series late last year, and then got this one for review, so grabbed the second one before reading this, as hasn’t realised I'd missed that one.

Although prior reading is not essential, it does help explain the significance of Malcolm in this novel. So after reading the two of the series in the last few days, I now really need the next book to find out what happens next! Which just means I’m well invested in this series.

Great series, love the characters who are all quite different, and which are now increased by the introduction of Quentin, the unexpected witch, and the relationships between them are believable in a paranormal world now going through chaos. Great plots as well as consistent writing, and for this one the tension builds even more, hence wanting the next book!

Highly recommend!

Quentin and Kaine story continues the on going adventure with more secrets, an unexpected betrayal, a lot of danger and adrenaline, but also sweet loving moments.
Their first meeting changes their lives as the outcome wasn't what they both expected and they have to accommodate each other and learn to trust and nourish what they have.
We have a couple twists and turns as more things are revealed, trust is put to test, and their foundation becomes shaky.
The enemy seems to gain ground and the repercussions are higher and higher that seems to end in tragedy if it isn't stopped.
Hard decisions needs to be made for the greater good and the devastation that's caused is great.
It was an amazing read and can't wait to see what happens next.

Baby steps. Quentin, always felt out of touch with everyone. He didn't think he belonged. In this life, Kaine is the outsider from the Royals, he's the Chief of Security. He goes out for a little stress relief and finds his fated mate. Not only that, his fated mate, Quentin is a bit unaware of the world around him. It is best to read the books in order to get the context of relationships and the conflicts. The Shadow Board is still a threat and keeping the brothers guessing. I'd like more answers and more progress. There is a lot going on and Quentin and Kaine bond while Quentin is learning who he is. I presume the battle, will be EPIC! Good story, nicely done. Need more forward storyline

Don’t get me wrong I did like this book but I had a few problems with it. Number one is the cliffhanger ending! I HATE cliffhangers. This one wasn’t as bad as some that I have read but still I don’t like them. Two I really felt like the overall story didn’t get advanced much in this book. It felt a bit like a side tangent although I can see how this would be setting up more of the story in subsequent volumes especially with Quentin’s ability with ancient languages. I still think it’s worth four stars because the characters are interesting and I understand that in a series like this there is a certain amount of set up needed plus I still enjoyed it.

Phoenix Mate is the third book in the Brothers of Fire series. In my opinion this is not a standalone story. The books should be read in order. This book about Kaine the Chief of Security and a Phoenix shifter and Quentin who doesn't know he's a mind reading witch. Kaine and Quentin are fated mates who didn't know it. The shadow board is back and planning something big. I love all the action in this book. There is so much going on and so much to learn. I love all the characters even the side characters. I can't wait for the next book to see what comes next. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

The excellent world building continues as does the scheming of the Shadow Board. I'm loving all the plots and counterplots as well as seeing which characters both human and paranormal are susceptible to blackmail or being bought off. Kaine and Quentin make a great couple and I am a fan of stories where one of the characters has a major awakening and discovers paranormal abilities they had no idea they possessed. That gives the author a chance for one character to provide information and instruction to the other in a logical way and we get to see the character discover pros and cons of this new life. That is handled perfectly here.

Mate

This is a 5/5 for me. This book is just as good as the first two. Quentin propositions phoenix shifter Kaine one night. He is surprised when Kaine agrees to meet up with him. The biggest surprise is when Kaine discovers that Quentin is a witch and his mate. Of course Quentin has trouble believing all of what Kaine is saying. Since Kaine is dealing the the Shadow Board, he takes over Quentin’s life. It does not help that Quentin is being blackmailed by the same group. So he is a bit overwhelmed. Quentin will have to learn how to use his powers and trust Kaine. The two will have to determine where they fit in each other’s lives to defeat the Shadow Board.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I enjoyed this book and thought that it was a good addition to the Brothers of Fires Series, which is set in the same universe of Familiar Mates Series but can be read standalone. I enjoyed Kaine and Quentin’s story. I would happily read the journals of the phoenixes past lives as it would be extremely interesting but possibly heartbreaking. Kaine is a phoenix shifter and Mont de Leucoy, Chief of Security. He’s the only phoenix shifter that’s outside of the royal family during this life and he has a lot of pressure to take down the Shadow Board before more people die and paranormals are exposed to the humans. Kaine accepts Quentin, the bartender from the bar across the street from the cafe (A front for the Coven operations) invitation of letting off some steam.

The last thing that Kaine expects is that Quentin is anything other than human but it turns out that not only does Quentin have absolutely no idea about the paranormal world that he apart of, he’s a mind reading witch and that they’re fated mates/familiars. I loved that Quentin wasn’t afraid to stand up to Kaine, after he’d basically abandoned Quentin for a week while he was busy trying to find out more about what the Shadow Board is planning next, and Quentin was learning and trying to harness his magic that had been suppressed due to being on ADHD medication as Quentin was diagnosed with ADHD since he saw a human doctor. Kaine isn’t used to sharing.

Kaine’s also trying to protect Quentin considering the Shadow Board was blackmailing him to watch the building across the street and provide weekly camera footage, otherwise his mother will pay the price. Now the bond has formed and their lives are tied, they also have to be extremely careful as if the Shadow Board knows about their bond, all they’d need to do is kill Quentin and Kaine will soon follow. I believe that Fate knew what they were doing by matching Kaine and Quentin together not only due to his power but he’s studying dead languages and cryptography at university, meaning that he could translate some of the phoenix journals of their past lives. Wow, with the way this book ended I’m even more looking forward to reading Everest’s book, the Phoenix Prince next. I’d recommend this books, series, universe and author to others.

This is book three in the Brothers of Fire series, and I’d recommend starting at the beginning, if you haven’t already. This story offers a nice balance of overarching plot/intrigue and specific relationship development. Kaine and Quentin are intriguing characters with an interesting dynamic together, and their connection develops against a backdrop of immersive events (vague here, because spoilers are the worst). All in all, an enjoyable read.

Such a brilliant series that I know I will have to reread once it's complete as I'm sure I will find the storyline even more thrilling read back to back. Brilliant word building and all the characters are just so good, even the secondary ones which pop up in each book. Each book deals with completely different storylines featuring each phoenix brother and their mates.
I don't want to give too much away but intense action scenes and captivating characters make this a definite must read series!

OMG!!!

This one will rip your heart and tear the world wide open. I do have my suspicions on why Everest is so obsessed. Man I need the next book. We learn so much. I think my jaw was on the floor for at least a third of the book. It’s amazing. The skill and planning the author has makes me think of some of the best complex worlds and moving plots that have ever been written. I have read many books and series by TJ Nichols and these are by far the best. Man I’m still blown away.

Brothers of Fire book 3. You really should read this series in order to fully understand what’s happening. This series is a spinoff of the Familiar Mates series however you can read this without reading that series-but you should because it rocks. I love the phoenix stories and the overall storyline we’ve got going on! It’s been a lot of fun so far and even though the books aren’t very long they still have everything you want in a good mm paranormal romance. There’s plenty of action and as always lots of heat!

I have been sucked in on this series and don't want to wait for the next book. This story was so good. There were many twists and turns and a definite I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING. Nonono.....
I adored Quentin, he just rolled with every change fired at him. Despite his worry/concern of his own history repeating and him being left behind. Once Kaine explained it made things easier for him to understand... though tje one with tje biggest lesson was Kaine. Yes he is in charge of security and secrets and used to being evasive. That doesnt work with a mate.

I did guess a couple of little details in this book and realllly cant wait for Everest and Olier.
