A scientist on the run—accompanied by her quippy teenage sidekick and a punk rock Indiana Jones—fights for survival in a dark dystopian world while battling to destroy a nefarious company before it unleashes a nightmare army.
Perfect for fans of Resident Evil + Zombieland!
When Stella's hideout is overrun by a horde of creatures straight out of a zombie movie, she must survive the surrounding war zone and outwit a murderous gang as she fights to rescue her kidnapped friend before he falls victim to the company's deadly experiments.
But the evils of her past are hunting her down. And time is running out. She must decide how far she's willing to go to save her friend and stop the company before it spreads its war to the rest of the world—even if it means teaming up with the very people who want her dead.
And time is running out. The company’s plans are nearly complete…
The first installment in a duology of science fiction thrillers, this gripping post-apocalyptic dystopian book is perfect for fans of The Walking Dead, Resident Evil, Zombieland, Aeon Flux, Mad Max, and The Last of Us.
This is not a romance book, but there are two steamy, slow burn romance enemies-to-allies-to-lovers *subplots.* No sex on the page. The sequel will have more steam than the first book. This book is intended for mature readers ages 18+. TWs include addiction, violence, blood and gore, death, and swearing and adult language.
I was gripped straight away, this is not a genre I had read previously, but it will now be a genre that I happily take an interest in thanks to Megan Boley and her amazing work. I straight away was drawn into the main female characters. They are polar opposites to each other and that added something unique to the plot line. The depth was added by the fact this is a dual timeline, so you get the full understanding of what happened to cause the end of the world, full of the turned who are zombie/vampire/human eaters who hate the light and hate noise…. I’m wondering if I’m a turned now, bar the human eating part LOL! I was initially worried about the high page count, being a kindle reader I guess its just a thin kindle, imagine a book with 694 pages, and yes I own paperbacks that large, and yes they are still unread. But because of my enjoyment of this the pages absolutely flew by.
Plot
The plot give The Last Of Us vibes and Resident Evil vibes. The ploy has so many different element and can pull so many emotions, sorrow, humour, love, shock, hatred, anger, giggling like a school girl and shouting at the book when secrets become known. The shock of some elements left me as shocked as Stella! The plot honestly was amazing! It had the perfect amount of drama, danger, friendships, and a pinch of starry-eyed characters. The danger levels suck you in so much as they are very intense and literally leave you on the edge of your seat. The fact there is the two groups – Faction and Troxie – adds even more depth and understanding towards the characters, their past and how that impacts them now. The plot moves effortlessly between danger and safe scenes making sure there is never a lag or a point where you feel the need to put the book down, right until the very end!
Characters
There is so much to say about all the characters in this and they have all completely different personalities. Stella/Agnes is someone who has learnt to be strong, and not trust anyone to survive. She is a defector for the Troxies and therefore wanted by both troxies and faction. She doesn’t give up and will do anything she needs to get what she needs, including the not so pleasant things. She is absolutely a kick ass FMC. The second main character is Penny, polar opposite to Stella and out to get Stella. Penny is with the faction and it took me a while to warm to her, but I did and she is also one bad ass FMC and I for one, would not like to be on the wrong side of her and her sickle. Quentine is my favourite little ninja teenager, he made me laugh so much, he brought the humour to the plot, that is for sure, just look at the way he quite literally falls into the storyline! Lawerance is the big teddy bear but I wouldn’t want to mess with him and Tara is the mother hen of the bunch. Derek and Mal are the other male main side characters and they are not to be messed with that’s for sure, but the relationship that Derek and Quentine strike up is one that always humoured me.

I loved everything about this book, truly. It is a well-deserved 5 star read but one thing that really stood out as well was the dedication. “For anyone who has suffered in silence, walked through fire, battled the darkness – or still doing it – you’re not alone. Keep finding the light.” There was never a moment where I wanted to actually put the book down, and the scenes full of danger, was so intense and left me on the end of my seat. I really loved how the relationships develop and how the MCs also develop just as much, if not more. The pages flew by and I’m excited to read the next instalment and find out how this all ends!

Such a gripping, high-stakes entry into the post-apocalyptic dystopian genre. It has pulse-pounding action with deeply human themes of survival, morality, and resilience. With its richly developed world, morally complex characters, and relentless pacing, this novel offers an intense reading experience.
At its core, the book is about survival in a world ravaged by corporate greed and scientific corruption. Stella is a fascinating protagonist—layered, capable, and carrying the weight of a past that slowly unravels as the story progresses. Her journey is compelling, not just because of the brutal setting but because of the emotional depth behind her choices. She is joined by a cast of equally intriguing characters, including her sharp-witted teenage Quentin and the mysterious motorcycled stranger Derek. The found family dynamic among the characters is one of the book’s strongest aspects, providing moments of warmth amidst the violence and darkness.
The world-building is stellar, unfolding at a steady pace and revealing a dystopia shaped by the unchecked power of a pharmaceutical corporation and its attempts to control humanity. The slow-burn explanation of how society crumbled feels organic and well-integrated into the story rather than an information dump. As someone who enjoys the way zombie fiction explores the breakdown (and rebuilding) of humanity, I found the setting particularly compelling. The use of a corporate villain—manipulating science for power—adds an unsettling layer of realism and feels timely.
While the book is action-heavy, it never sacrifices character development. There is a perfect balance between intense, edge-of-your-seat sequences and quieter, emotionally charged moments. There’s also just enough romance to add another layer of tension, but it never overshadows the central plot. The morally grey choices presented throughout the novel keep the stakes high, forcing characters into impossible situations that test their values and loyalties.
With its fast-paced narrative, strong character dynamics, and a world that feels both terrifying and believable, The Darkness All Around Us is a fantastic start to the duology. Fans of Resident Evil, Zombieland, The Walking Dead, and The Last of Us will find plenty to love here, and the book never lets up until the final page. I can’t wait to see how the story continues.

Dystopian thrillers are not something I read regularly however when I stumbled across this authors TikTok I knew I had to give this one a shot!
Thanks to @rrbooktours I was able to snag an ARC and it did not disappoint!
It was nice to be able to dive in with no expectations especially while in the middle of a book hangover!
There’s a civil war raging all around Stella and not only must she fight the monsters but also fight for herself.
Please read the trigger warnings prior!
This book did not have any romance technically but ummmm who’s Derek?!?! 👀👀👀 and can we see more of him in the next book please!!?!? 😂
Stella’s journey is really focused around the war and self healing. I loved getting to see her interactions with Death and learning to navigate those pesky inner thoughts. Sometimes it’s not always good versus evil but learning to navigate the gray areas. We can be our own worst enemy and while Stella was fighting against the evil she was also fighting her own impulses and additions.
Is she the key to ending the war with Pharmatox? Hopefully we will find out more in book two! 👀
With this book I discovered something that dystopian thrillers are becoming the type of reading made especially for me in the new year. With this book you will never get bored due to the fast pace of the narrative and because there is really a lot of action seasoned with romance! I love the combination of Resident Evil and Zombieland. It's one of those books that you never get bored of and you start turning the pages to see what happens next because you need to know what happens. As an almost pharmacist, the war between the Faction and Pharmtarox fascinated me as did the character of Stella who He has a truly difficult task and that is to save his friend Silas from Pharmtarox before the irreparable happens. I loved all those characters who will help Stella in her task even though they also have their own battles to fight. If you are looking for a love story, you will find the love story of a woman who finds forgiveness and finally love for her life and her person even if she had to go through everything before reaching this awareness. . But let's talk about the man who is tall, dark and on a motorbike. Derek forever This is a raw and cruel adventure where in the struggle between good and evil, humans are more terrible than the drugs or monsters that want to consume them! But despite all this, hope is never lost sight of. I can't wait to see where the second book takes us 😍😍😍 Rating... Obviously... 5⭐
This is a tome of a book, probably one of the longest I've read in a while, but my god it was GOOD. It could be a screenplay for a TV show. It has all the right vibes for one. I love Stella, she is so badass, fighting a war she may have inadvertently started. She is very much a solo artist, she doesn't rely on anyone, she learned a hard lesson...until the adorable Quentin falls literally from the sky.
This is such a journey of growth, forgiveness and a lot of badassery. The leads in this book are female. Both are angry and want revenge.
This was a fascinating world to be in, a drug causing people to "turn". A manufactured drug, could that be any more terrifying, especially as it's marketed as a wellness one! Not quite zombies though - PHEW!!!
We see events before and leading up to the days, and the current situation of the world. I was so shocked when I learned who the Architect and the Leader were and the connotations they had for the characters.
I adored this book! I can't wait to dive into Penny's book. I can't get enough of this, I want more and I want it on the TV screen!
The Darkness All Around Us By Megan Boley ARC ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fᴀᴠ Qᴜᴏᴛᴇ| “I thought if you ran out, you’d stop.”, “you look like someone who’s been carrying something heavy for a long time. And…well, I know what that’s like, but the dust isn’t the answer. It won’t fix the state of the world. It won’t bring back the people we lost. We know it’s bad, so why do we use it.” -Quentin
Fᴀᴠ Cʜᴀʀᴀᴄᴛᴇʀ| Quentin has had my heart since he fell out of the ceiling into Stella’s world. This young teen boy touched by tragedy is still kind and generous in a world that would rather drag him under and destroy his soul than see him thrive. And all his one liners are fabulous.
Format| Kindel
Rᴇᴠɪᴇᴡ| In a moribund United States long savaged by sickness, and war a pharmaceutical company has created monsters beyond our worst nightmares. Civil war is raging between the Faction and Pharmtarox, as both sides bring survivors to their side, Stella must save her friend Silas from Pharmtarox before he is either tortured or turned. With no safe place to hide Stella finds herself being hunted and she must find hope and help in a band of unlikely strangers, (each with their own demons to fight). Along the way they discover the truths to healing their own pains and Stella discovers she could be the key to take down Pharmtarox for good.
This is no love story and yet, it feels like one of the most honest love stories I’ve ever read. It’s a love story of one women finding forgiveness and love for herself after battling demons of addiction and the things she’s had to do, to survive. With her home destroyed she must find a new home base. But that means putting her trust back in hands of others, others she may come to care about and by being around her could get them hurt or worse killed. And then there is the tall dark and yummy stranger on a motorcycle. (EPPPP, YES!!) Hello Derek!!
This is a harrowing and gory adventure through a war torn city, battling good vs evil and the gray that lays down the middle, in a frightening dystopia of monsters, drugs and humans that maybe more terrifying in their actions then the drugs or the monsters that want to consume them! And…then…there is hope in the small moments of a better world, that could offer love and redemption.
I’ve got my survival pack ready and I am excited to see where the next book takes us!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Ok, I have to admit that this book totally petrified me due to the sheer size and genre.
Dystopian and sci-fi always seem to be lacking on my shelves and tbr piles....
But I spotted this front cover and it just looked so, so good that I thought, this can be my book of choice to challenge myself this month!
Well, I have to say that if any of the above sounds like you! - stop! and take another look at this book because it was amazing!
I absolutely loved watching The Walking Dead and The Last Of Us and this book totally gave me the same vibes throughout.
Following Stella as she navigates a world where the human race became hooked on a new vitamin which turned them into cannibalistic humanoids - she attempts to find a way to save the human race, even as she's being hunted down.
This was a pretty slow burn storyline but the world building and character presentation and background was really well written and pulled me in from the start.
Once we started encountering the hordes and learning about Pharmatrox, I was already hooked and kept reaching for the book to read more...
It was so easy to become invested in Stella's quest. She provided the perfect, strong FMC to get behind and her character development made her relatable and believable.
Yes, there were zombies - but we've all invested in this kind of future before.
The writing had me totally engrossed and I just couldn't put this down - I couldn't believe how quickly I got through the pretty impressive page count!
This was packed with action - some quite violent scenes (as expected) so do check out the content warnings....
But if you're ok with most things, like me, then you'll love the twists and turns within this book.
I wasn't so keen on the fact that I have (for the first time ever) started to take vitamins 😲 ....and this book definitely got me thinking about how the big pharma companies really do operate.
Thought-provoking and a little scary!!
A great read though and I'm so happy that I actually have book 2 here and ready to read in the near future, so watch out for my next review too!
In her debut novel Megan Boley explores what happens when you give a pharmaceutical company too much power:
Pharmmatrox was on the cutting edge of medical science, they had created incredible drugs that were supposed to save the world, no on would ever get sick again. But instead of curing people, they created an additive drug called Dust, that eventually turns the user into a zombie like creature. Stella is just trying to survive and keep her promise to find her friends before people started turning on mass. But Stella has a few problems, no only is she a user of Dust she is also on the run from a woman who is hunting her believing she is the reason why there are turned in the first place. Stella knows her time is running out in more ways than one and she has to try and find her friend and hopefully do some damage to the company that caused this in the first place.
When I read the premise of this book, I knew it was one that i would want to read. I am all for books where there are morally grey characters, and when the book is presented as Dark and Gritty. I have not read a zombie based book in quite some time, I think many have moved away from the genre for awhile (it did get oversaturated there for awhile), but I am happy to delve back into the genre. I like Boley's take on how the zombies are created, this is not your typical you get bitten you become a zombie. No this is if you use this addictive drug too long, it is going to turn you into one and all those who take it know this. However, like in many zombie or apocalyptic novels, the zombies are really the least of your worries, it is the other survivors you need to worry about. I think that Boley does a great job of showing how far humanity can fall and how the two different groups The Faction and Pharmatrox (troxies), are battling each other for control.
I struggled to get into this book at the beginning, I wish there had been a prologue to give readers the general idea of the dystopia we are about to step into, the two sides and why they are fighting. Instead, we have to wait till chapter 10 in order to get even a hint of what occurred before. I wasn't able to understand why people hated Troxies and wanted them all dead or how people were becoming zombies, so i felt like I was muddling through the first few chapters trying to figure it all out.
I think I saw a review where some people had a hard time believing one of the twists in the book, I personally thought it was quite obvious, and not surprising and it just made since when you think of most dystopia/end of the world type books; everyone changes in some way or another, from who they are to their names, people have to change and adapt in order to survive. The other twist I did not see coming at all, and does it really affect things in the book, not really, so I am fine with it.
I appreciate that Boley does not waste the side characters in this book, they are not just there to be there, but feel like they are fully fledged people and different from each other even though they do not get their own POV. Each of them has a purpose in this story, especially those around Stella and I enjoyed that we got to know them as well. They also helped keep Stella grounded in certain situations which Stella needed quite a bit of in this book. I mean how can you not like Quinten.
Death was an interesting addition and I wasn’t sure of her purpose until halfway through the book, so if you find the Death character confusing to begin with don’t worry. Their presence is explained and I actually wish there was more of Death at times (Death starts to fade out the farther you get into the book), to really show the downward spiral of Stella and her Dust usage and in the same way explain why she continued to use.
Overall, this is a really good debut novel and for most of the book you do not think that you are reading one. Boley does not let up on the action, suspense or darkness throughout the book. There are times when I wish the stakes were a little bit higher (but I don’t want to give any spoilers). I look forward to reading what Boley puts out next and I better not have to wait long for book 2.
───── • ♡︎🔥🖤🔥♡︎ • ───── ✨✨𝑀𝑦 𝑇ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑠✨✨ Thank you so much to Megan Boley for my Advanced Reader Copy of The Darkness All Around Us! This review is comprised entirely of my own thoughts & opinions, & is based on the copy I received.
This book was so different from anything I have ever read & I enjoyed every second of it! It was fast paced, exciting, action-packed, and had just the perfect amount of a romantic subplot to scratch that itch for me.
It starts off immediately amidst the action and we find our FMC, Stella, trying to navigate her way through the destruction around her. Stella is an AWESOME and badass FMC and I loved her journey in this book. It’s very much a healing journey on her end as it’s fraught with emotions. Along the way, she finds herself amongst a group of people who are also trying to survive the apocalypse and who are seeking vengeance against the forces that brought this devastation to the world.
The found family vibes of this group are everything to me! I loved their antics and their banter, especially Quentin’s! I also loved that there was a bit of humor in their interactions to offset some of the heavier themes in the book. Derek and Stella’s burgeoning relationship had me feeling all the butterflies and I can’t wait to see how their story progresses!
Our other FMC, Penny, is another very intriguing character and she grew on me throughout the story! She and Stella are very much on similar journeys as they try to find redemption.
This book was a wild ride from the very beginning & I honestly couldn’t get enough of it! I couldn’t put it down because of how engaging it was to read and I just needed to know what happened next. Megan did such a good job of creating a story that pulls you in, doesn’t let go, and keeps you reading until the wee hours of the morning! There were so many twists and turns and I was on the edge of my seat reading and just didn’t know what to expect.
Overall, I definitely recommend this one! It’s perfect if you love dystopian books and I cannot wait for the next one!

“We’ve all done horrible things…But that doesn’t make us horrible people. Or cowards. We are not the sum of the worst things we’ve done. We do what we have to do to survive."
OMG! WOW! This dark and gritty dystopian/apocalyptic story was phenomenal. It had me in chokehold, with my mind spinning and my heart racing continually throughout.
As you start reading, you realize that something dreadful has already happened to the population and our FMC is currently right in the midst of it, trying to survive the unthinkable. We are thrown right into the story going at 100 miles per hour as we try to navigate the craziness happening right before our eyes.
Stella/Agnes, is an incredible badass woman, who is hell bent on surviving the apocalypse and rescuing her friends. She takes us on one hell of a journey filled with pain, anger, heartbreak, loneliness, healing, forgiveness and friendship.
Along her journey, she ends up becoming part of a makeshift group of unique people who are also hell bent on surviving and dishing out vengeance against the evil and wickedness that destroyed their lives.
The back-and-forth banter throughout was filled with many hilarious laugh out loud moments, snooty sarcasm, and witty comments from all the characters. I just loved Quintin and could not get enough of his hilarious antics. There was also some developing delicious tension between Stella and Derek that seemed to be moving towards something extraordinary between the two of them. I can not wait to see how their relationship grows as this story progresses.
The twists and turns throughout had me literally on the edge of my seat, biting my nails and gasping the whole way through. I never knew what would be thrown at us next as I turned the pages. Which made the story even more enticing and utterly captivating.
Incredibly well written story that hooks you from page one and keeps you addicted and craving more by the end. The story was filled with action, suspense, violence, emotional turmoil, wickedness, cruelty, devastating secrets and heart-wrenching betrayals. But the story was also filled with healing, forgiveness, friendship, passion and love. Just amazing.
I loved it and look forward to reading the next book to see what kind of hell was going to happen now.

Rating: 5 stars Spice rating: 0.5 🌶️ I'm not going to lie, I wasn't sure what to expect from this one when I first picked it up, but from the first page, I was immediately immersed in the futuristic dystopian world of 2085 America. The plot was unique, fast-paced, and had many twists and turns that I didn't expect. The romantic subplot was super enjoyable to read about, as it was both honest and adorable. It was one of the first relationships with a genuine connection that I've read about in a while, and it was certainly refreshing. Additionally, the characters were wonderfully written, and I was able to get a sense of their personalities even before official introductions. I loved Stella, Tara, and Quentin because, honestly, how could you not? Penny and Mal definitely grew on me as well. Also, may I just say: Derek..... the perfect book boyfriend who also loves motorcycles?? Do I have a crush on another fictional character? Maybe... 👀 There were two POVs that followed the protagonist and a secondary character who had a much larger role later in the novel. I really appreciated this aspect as it also allowed a second romantic subplot to develop, which was satisfying to watch unfold. The writing itself was concise and purposeful, and the author was able to describe everything without rambling or providing unnecessary commentary. Ultimately, I really really enjoyed this book and I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in sci-fi or dystopia. It's a bit of a mix of Mockingjay and The Maze Runner trilogy, and I loved every second. I can't wait for the second book in this duology!! Thank you so much to Megan Boley for providing me with an ARC copy of this book!! My review is entirely honest and based on my personal opinions.
I won’t lie that the cover caught my attention and the mention of Resident Evil sold me. I played those games well before I should have and they are now my comfort game (don’t ask!). Well let me just say that The Darkness All Around Us by Megan Boley is probably now a comfort book, basically one of my ultimate top tens. This is a hefty novel but I devoured it. A fantastic offerings to post-apocalyptic dystopian with one kick-ass heroine. It’s equally pulse pounding and yet Boley manages to focus on the humanity, or lack there of with some characters. This is one of the main reasons I love this genre. You can mix amazing action, people fighting for their life but at the same time we can see humanity for all it’s good and bad qualities.
Speaking of good and bad qualities, Stella was a dream protagonist and so is Quintin. But there are so many amazing characters in this. The characters are all well developed and also bad ass. I also loved the found family aspect and slow burn romance which made perfect sense for the setting.
I am honestly hooked on this duology. I would highly recommend to fans of zombie-esque reads, post apocalyptic reads and of course dystopian but even if those aren’t your genres I feel like this book could turn that around and make you a fan! With a cast of amazing characters, wonderful writing and a gripping plot this is one you need to read.
As always thank you to Zooloo’s Book Tours for the copy to review. My review is always honest, truthful and freely given.
3.5 stars from me! I LOVED the concept, Ive never read a book like it and it absolutely hit all my resident evil/zombie itches!
The use of technology was good although sometimes a little hard to follow, it took me a good 20% to be able to get my head around things and start to really enjoy the story
I liked the mystery and storyline of Stella's background and being able to read about day zero and not just experience the aftermath
I thought the author dealt with themes of addiction really well and it made each of the characters more relatable - being able to understand how and why they continued to use ect
The plot twists that just kept coming were entertaining and I didn't forsee any of them which - as an avid thriller reader - is rare 😂
I really wanted to feel more emotionally connected to the characters but for some reason I just couldn't quite get there! Not sure if it was little things that kept throwing me out of the story?
At times, especially in fight scenes I found that there was SO MUCH action it was a little hard to follow, but then again I shouldn't complain about there being TOO MUCH action in a book Vs none 😂
Overall I enjoyed this, it made a refreshing change in genre from my normal romantacy - it was action packed, clever, well written and for people who enjoy politics, corrupt government and most of all ZOMBIES 👌🏼 I may continue the series and read book 2 at a later date but for now I'm really happy with how things resolved!
*I received the e-ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Release Date: March 26th
The Darkness All Around Us is a syfy/dystopian/urban fantasy that follows Stella, a lone wolf, and her journey of redemption that she believes she needs to accomplish. Along the way she meets new friends and works along side enemies to take down the corporation that took over the world and caused the destruction that is gripping humanity.
I really enjoyed this book. At first glance it would not be the usual book that I would pick up, but I am so glad I took a chance on it. The FMCs that we follow, Stella and Penny, are both engaging in their own way. Both are dealing with personal demons and both ultimately are trying to make up for what happened in their pasts in the present. While the romance is NOT the focus on this book, we do get two delicious slow-burn romance sub-plots for both FMCs, with each MMCs being their perfect matches, and makes me excited to see what happens in book 2.
The sides characters also were a plus for me. Each had their own voice (even though they did not have a POV) and the found family aspect that came into play was delightful to read. Besides Stella and Penny, every character has a purpose in the story and I appreciate that as a reader.
Overall this was a fantastic debut and I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
The Darkness All Around Us by Megan Boley is Book One in The Darkness Duology, and it’s an absolute must-read for fans of intense, fast-paced stories. If you love dystopian, post-apocalyptic worlds, dual POV, found family, zombies, and action-packed adventures, then you will love this book!
Wow! What a debut! Megan absolutely blew me away with how well she crafted this book. The storyline, plot, and characters are all incredibly well done. The dystopian, post-apocalyptic world she built is both vivid and haunting — it truly immerses you in a collapsing society where powerful pharmaceutical companies manipulate science to gain control over humanity.
From start to finish, this book keeps you on the edge of your seat with nonstop action, intense moments, and just the right amount of romance. The characters face tough decisions that constantly challenge their loyalty and values, making them feel real and relatable.
If you’re looking for a thrilling, thought-provoking read with high stakes and emotional depth, this one delivers. What more could you ask for in a book? With non-stop tension, emotional depth, and gripping twists, Megan Boley delivers a thrilling ride that will leave you desperate for book two.
Full transparency: the author is my daughter. You will assume my views are biased, and you will be right to some degree. But I was the first one to see Megan as a talented writer in her early years of elementary school (I taught elementary school for 40+years) . I always told her she would be a writer. With this book, I rest my case. I read her initial final copy(when she thought she was finished) a few years ago. Then she found a wonderful editor and followed her advice, and incorporated information about writing that she learned along the way. Her real end product is amazing! I’m not going to tell you about the story line - I think that other five story reviews on this site say it all. Just know that it was difficult to for me to it put down once I started reading. I’m not surprised that her lead characters are strong women; they reflect her personality. Her detailed descriptions throughout the book allow you to completely visualize the setting , the characters, and the action. I became completely engrossed in this dystopian fictional story(a genre that normally wouldn’t chose) , and I’m anxiously waiting for Book 2.
This book was my first dystopian in a while, and let me tell you that it scratched a lot of itches for me! 🤓🤣
It has zombies-like creatures, action, character growth, side characters I wanted to be BFF with, banter, slow burn; I’m telling you, it’s got it all! 😍
I think the part I enjoyed the most about this book is the fact that both the « hero » and the « villain » were women. If you know me, you know how much I love badass FMCs, and this book has not one, but two completely awesome female main characters, and I truly enjoyed seeing both these characters grow throughout the story.
The reason I docked a star is mainly because the middle part seemed to lose the quick pace that had me devouring the book at first. The story didn’t drag on or anything, but it started with such a bang that I kinda wished the pacing stayed the same throughout the story despite knowing full well that many elements had to be introduced which would necessarily slow the pace a little.
I recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for an action-packed story with heartfelt characters and just the right amount of zombie apocalypse vibes! ☺️
The story follows a world that is crumbling due to addiction. In this book, we primarily follow Stella and her companions as they try to locate Stella's friend all while evading a group of people who quite fancy seeing Stella d3ad.
Stella a great character, and I loved the flashbacks to her past and how she eventually became Stella. It really helped us to understand her.
We also see the Vengeful Penny pop up throughout the book, and this added an intriguing layer to the story as she really doesn't like Stella... but why???
The overall story takes place in the shadow on a fallen city and fallen country, as a newly developed drug liferly grips the nation, turning people in either addicts who can't get clean or well... turning people.
It was a really interesting take on a big pharmaceutical and their role in the disaster that occurs.
While Science Fiction, it is set in the not so distant future so there is an element of reality there for the reader.
While a long book, it grips you from the moment you begin reading, and I'm sure if you like science fiction and strong leading ladies, this one is for you!
Zombies no romance well its slow burn and sorta in the book but its not the main grab of this book. Which is totally fine with me. Resident Evil.. Zombieland.. The Walking Dead.. I'm all for those shows. I'm all for a strong female lead who is not gonna take crap from anyone. I literally felt like I was in those worlds of zombies reading it. The capture of the world and the main female character was just beautiful and so well done. I for one can't wait to get the next book I need it like yesterday. I seriously hope 2085 is ready because it literally puts the whole zombie apocalypse into view and moments in this book alot of them deserve spotlight for capturing this genre. Megan it literally has been an honor reading this book. My favorite genre and not one that has romance busted in right away more about this world and a strong female character. I approve of this book and author the world of the walking dead show should hire you to do an episode or 20. I for one think you captured this world so magnificent. Can't wait for book 2.
The Darkness All Around Us is a dystopian sci-fi about a woman seeking retribution to correct past mistakes.
While reading it, I couldn't believe that this was from a deput author. It hooked me up from the beginning, with Stella, literally, fighting for her life against the zombies.
Some things that bothered me: -There were excessive Spanish phrases, that didn't suit well with the story. It should be hinted at least one time Agnes/Stella's heritage and it struck me odd that most of the many (and I mean many) characters of the book all understood Spanish. -I think I would like more backstory from Quentin and unfortunately, I didn't care for Tara. -Something on Stella's character bothered me, but I can't place my hand on it.
Overall it was a beautiful story and I can't wait to read the second book.
Step this way for a brutal, pulse-pounding descent into dystopian horror that grips and pleases as it rips your heart out.
Megan Boley's The Darkness All Around Us is a full-throttle, nerve-shredding journey through a world where survival is an act of defiance and the line between humanity and monstrosity blurs with every blood-drenched step forward. If you like your dystopian fiction with a razor-sharp edge, a touch of Resident Evil-esque bio-horror, and characters who carry their trauma like a loaded gun, then buckle up, this one hit's hard.
Boley brings a world drenched in shadow, in a future where corporate greed has mutated into something far more monstrous, the novel throws us into the ruins of a society ravaged by unchecked scientific ambition. Pharmatox, the omnipresent pharmaceutical juggernaut, has been playing God with genetics, and now the world is paying the price.
Dystopian thrillers are quickly becoming my favorite kind of read for me. There's plenty of action and even some romance in this! I love the mention that this is similar to Resident Evil and Zombieland, it is definitely a combination of the two and works so well together. There were many moments in the book that had me turning the pages to find out what happens next because these characters are so much fun.
The Darkness All Around Us is a dystopian thriller that I wished I had enjoyed better then I did. I love the cover of the book but the book fell short for me. For me I got confused with this book and felt like the book had way too many chapters. The author did a good job writing this and I enjoyed the characters in this book. Overall it was a good book but just one I struggled with. Thank you to the author for this ARC read in exchange of my honest review.
Loved this story! This book features a unique take on zombies—addicts who can transform into zombie-like creatures—and two warring factions: those who created the drug and those addicted to it. The story follows multiple characters, all with the shared goal of stopping the ones responsible for the drug’s creation. Packed with intense action, explosive fights, and just a sprinkle of romance, this book keeps you on the edge of your seat!
Oh. My. Wow!!! An absolutely brilliant turn on the dystopia wheel!! Abso-ducking-lutely phenomenal! Now I'll admit it took me a few chapters to get up to my usual reading rhythm (there is a lot of characters & backstories) but once I had.....Wowzer this book has got it! Twists & turns that had me yelling at my kindle, Characters that make you feel ALL the emotions & a scarily believable plot xx
An action filled story set in a dystopian future. There were times where the author kept too many secrets from the reader but overall did a wonderful job of weaving a story full of love and redemption. I became very attached to the characters and will be reading the sequel when it becomes available. Definitely worth the read!
I absolutely loved this! Couldn’t put it down. I loved all the characters and felt like Quentin was my brother. Definitely Resident Evil vibes but with a more “human” and real feel. I love corrupt government, dystopian vibes and this delivered.
