Xianxia baihe with big feminine rage vibes and a romance subplot. I wasn’t too impressed with the first thirty or so chapters since the book jammed a ton of action and timeskips right at the beginning without adequately introducing the characters to the reader or giving them depth. Thankfully the writing improved as it progressed, the meat of the story is a huge bloodthirsty revenge arc that I loved, I’m a big fan of murderous characters so I was eating that part up. Once that arc was over the book lost its tight pacing (and the MC lost her purpose) so it felt a bit like killing time to reach the end of the book. Overall, a mixed bag with an excellent middle sandwiched between a mediocre beginning and ending.

If you're a fan of MDZS, I urge you to read The Dragon. The novel will fascinate you with its rich cultivation world and captivating female characters. You'll be happy with what it has to offer!

I had to get that out of the way for those who will only ever see a glimpse of my review before they continue scrolling.

This novel was fantastic! It delivered the cultivation setting I was yearning for, introduced me to the type of fierce female characters I'm now deeply invested in, and stirred up a whirlwind of emotions that kept me engaged.

How are there so few reviews of this web novel on Goodreads? I. Do. Not. Understand. There are some similarities between the novel and MDZS, including the genre, story arcs, and character interactions. At the very least, a quarter of MDZS lovers would at least find delight in The Dragon. This novel has much of what you want as an MDZS fan, but this time, with female empowerment! Unlike MDZS, where I can only remember one female character who didn't die a horrible death, The Dragon is full of female characters absolutely crushing it in life. I love it.

Speaking of those badass characters, Gu Fuyou initially drove me slightly bonkers due to her immaturity. However, GF's "growing up" deeds were central to the story, so her initial childishness was necessary. Ultimately, GF thrived as an adult and never gave up on fighting for what she believed in. Zhong Michu was, thankfully, more mature than GF from the beginning. It helped that she had a few hundred years on GF. ZM started the story and finished the novel as my favorite character. She was mature, to begin with, but still evolved. She was patient but also confident. Affable but strong. Calm but passionate. Her pain was so palpable that it made me cry, but her joy was also so heartwarming that it made me physically smile. ZM was not only GF’s rock and guide but also the rock and guide of the entire story.

The Dragon could be a good option for readers new to the cultivation genre. Initially, the author genuinely and effectively attempted to explain the cultivation basics to new readers. I was impressed by the effort. I read more on Google than the story during my first dive into the cultivation genre. So, I appreciate that new readers wouldn't have had to do that. The educational effect was dropped as the chapters progressed, but that was okay. If new readers have made it through the book's first third, they are in it for the long haul by then.

The length of the novel was perfect. It was shorter than I'm used to, but that was also refreshing. The shorter length of the story also helped to develop the ending. Most web novels I've read until now have a sudden ending that comes out of nowhere. Then, the authors add some extras to make the reader feel better. This novel had a drawn-out ending, which I wasn't initially sure about. The story gradually wound down as loose ends were tied. You didn't need to read any extras to feel better, and you didn't feel quite slapped in the face with a disappointing ending. In the end, I liked how this novel was completed because the end of the book was just that, The End.

What was missing from the translation was, well... a translator. It felt very machine-generated heavy, and there was none of the personal touch I'm used to. I think Melts and Douqi have spoiled me. I'm still super grateful to the DragonTL group for their translation. I would not have been able to enjoy this fantastic story without their hard work. A million thanks!

There are so many things I can say about jian long, but I'll try and keep it short:

Jian long is separated into three volumes in publication, and they follow three different arcs in the novel. The first arc is when our mains meet each other, Gu Fuyou (mc) and Zhong Michu (fl). This is when these two girls get accustomed to each other and when you can say originally and firstly fell for each other. Then it follows into tragedy, with sect annihilation and genocide.

In the next vol/arc, we have revenge. Whether or not that revenge was justified is up to the Heavens in the novel, as Gu Fuyou begins to take things down a different and darker path that begins to blur the line between being different from her oppressors. But Zhong Michu stays with her along every step of the way.

The last section of the novel consists of the aftermath of the revenge and the pairing officializing their love for each other. Though there still is some struggle, angst, and fighting, it is not nearly as much as the previous section.

Our main character, Gu Fuyou, isn't inherently a good person. She even refers to herself as evil. And deep down, she is. Gu Fuyou is a twisted soul, but it cannot be blamed on her but on the people who wronged her.

Now, I hate the stories that always have that "Oh, only she can pull her back from snapping" or "only she can make her feel okay again" and because of just a touch, the other is okay like it's some special power or something. This novel has that but it's a different vibe of "if she is not okay, I will kill everyone in this world" and I think that's beautiful. Her presence of being there heals her not because they're soulmates or anything, but it's because she knows she is okay and that is all she desires is for the other's safety.

The characters are all top notch. You know when a villain is so bad you get shivers or get disgusted every time they get mentioned? Yeah, that's how these characters will make you feel. And good! The characters that were made to be hated are despised, and the characters that are made to be liked are loved.

I don't know if I don't have a wide variation of different cultivation novels, but there were some things included in this that I thought were really intriguing and cool!!!

Zhong Michu was seen as a cultivator who could never lose a battle, and this was proven as wrong. And Gu Fuyou was seen as a cultivator who would never grow strong, and this was also proven incorrect.

The bonus chapters after the end of vol 2 were also heart-breaking. You can read them when you get to them, but I chose to read them at the end of the whole novel.

Streets say the translation is an edited mtl. I really do hope this gets a proper translation soon. It definitely does irk me, but it has nothing to do with the novel itself and the author. Don't let that drive you away from being interested in this novel. Keep an eye out for either a proper translator or even an official translation. I already deeply love this novel. I can't imagine it when it's done correctly.

This was definitely one of my most favorite reads, and I recommend everyone the story of Gu Fuyou and Zhong Michu.

“In this life and the next.”
“For all eternity.”

Screaming and crying, these two are insanely cute! I need a better translation so more people can read and support it — then it might get licensed and end up on my non-existent bookshelf!

Putting this on hold for now because I found out that the translation was done using generative AI, not edited MTL (which is already not the best), which is unfortunate because I really liked what I have read so far. Looking forward to pick this up again later in chinese or when an official/fan translation will be released.

«There was no one more rash than Gu Fuyou, brave and fearless, seemingly naive despite her worldly experience. It wasn’t that she no longer feared death or had nothing to lose. This was simply her nature – a daring spirit, like flames burning fiercely, never to be extinguished»

I liked it. I loved Zhong Michu specially, and the arc where everything went wrong with the Zuo family had me on edge. However, after the downfall everything went as if in a manual. Even if it was good, there weren't any consistent challenges or tense moments, there wasn't anything making me actively want to keep reading. Everything went more or less smoothly, so I didn't quite enjoy most of it. But what threw me off was the fact that the only explanation for Gu Fuyou's revival was a random assumption from Dongli in an extra. I was expecting to have a logical explanation for it in the story and I really wanted it but I guess it was just her extreme desire for revenge??? Idk

Loved the couple tho

I read the translation.

I went from reading and finishing one actual novel/book my whole adult life to this. It was hella long (30+ hours of actual reading, which is about 6 regular books) and the translation quality was unimpressive… at first. Actually, for the majority of the first volume, I was not very impressed. By volume 2 though, I couldn’t put it down. I was completely invested in this story, and the translation and prose either got better or I simply had gotten used to it.

The story itself was fascinating. At first, I wasn’t sure what the plot was. Since it was so long, it seemed like we were just being taken for a ride on this epic adventure of a story, which felt like I was watching episodes of a kdrama (I don’t watch very many Chinese dramas anymore, but I imagine it’s like that as well). However, it was very clear by the 2nd volume that this was a revenge story. It had its satisfying moments when it came to this. There are 3 volumes in total, but I think volume 2 was my favorite. It was just so satisfying to see what became of everyone, and how much power they now had to carry out their plans.

The world-building was really great. This was my first and only exposure to cultivation novels, so I wasn’t sure what I was expecting. But coming from a Chinese background (raised watching HK dramas in the 80’s and 90’s), this was easy to see in my head and understand. Even without that knowledge through, the world-building and the description of everything was so vivid, that it created a whole universe for me. It didn’t require previous background at all. It’s so colorful and extensive, that I was pretty blown away. Like I said… by volume 2, I just couldn’t put it down. At all.

SPOILERS BELOW!!:

The romance was okay. I knew what I was going to be reading even before I picked up this book. I love lesbian fic, but I’ve never actually finished a single book about it in my life - because I simply lose interest, or it’s just a terrible book. This was not bad though. I mean, there’s not going to be explicit smut coming out of China, now that it’s been banned (literally, arrests are made for writing too sexy and profiting off it), but at least (SPOILER) they do admit their feelings, sleep together (there’s nothing more than a description of mists forming around them as they consummate - so don’t expect every detail of the act), and has a happy ending. There is also an additional “almost” sleeping together moment, with bodies burning hot, biting, and taking a bit of clothes off, and that’s it. Their romance is sloooooooow, but it gets there. Moments of their romance…. are quite lacking. I craved for more interactions! When I think about the revenge aspect of it though, and the severity of wanting to exact revenge by volume 2, I can see how there was very little actual desire for romance. It would seem wrong. Like, on the grand scheme of things, it seemed like romance needed to be put in the back burner bcs of the intensity of the hate. But the few scenes that we do have of their romance, mm, it was goooood. Not great. Just good.

SPOILER: My favorite and most memorable flirt was when the MC (main character) said she was going to seduce the owner to buy the place if he won’t take money. The FL (female lead) then goes along with MC, and is later revealed that FL is the owner. MC is surprised, but delighted, bcs now she can have the place. But FL doesn’t want money. So now, the FL expects MC to do whatever is necessary to buy the place like she said she would, but is obviously very disappointed that MC doesn’t keep her words (aka, using seduction). Lol. It was very unexpected of FL, because her feelings were very unclear up to this point. It delighted me to see how much she’s changed, and how much clearer things are between them now. There’s also A LOT of mention of touching a certain person’s dragon horn as a sign of… yeah. I chuckle at this every time. Lol. It’s the stupidest shit, but it works! Haha

Well, 30+ hours of reading. I have no regrets. This one is going to stay with me for a very long time. It was such an adventure. It totally felt like I was watching a kdrama/cdrama. I loved it

First volume: 10/10
Second volume: 8.5/10
Third volume: 7/10
Which results in a total 8.875 if you consider that the first volume is nearly half of the whole story, which I'm shamelessly rounding up to a 5/5.
I had to make this split scoring, because the contents of the story of each volume felt very different for me 😔

Anyways... What a wonderfully emotional and gripping story. Definitely one of the most painful things I've read ;-;

My favorite part was the first volume. It was fun and cute, with some good yearning.
The main characters and also side characters are really well fleshed out. I wish we could have seen more of the side characters though, it felt like some got pushed to the side near the end, sadly forgotten. Especially since all of them were really interesting.
The politics were not too complicated to follow for me personally, which is positive for me.
The fighting scenes were really cool, kept me on the edge and had the perfect length, never dragging on.
Generally, the descriptions of the world and things happening were amazing and enjoyable to read, giving a good immersion.
It was satisfying, how the story elements were woven together in the end!

I feel like the time between the first and second volume could have been explored more. It's a missed opportunity in my opinion. Meanwhile the third volume seemed like the author wanted to finish this novel as quickly as possible. Making it feel rushed, like it was skipping over certain characters and their plots.
Also rear the end I wished there would be more cute interactions between Gu Fuyou and Zhong Michu. The second and third volumes were very sparse with their slow burn. I'd say, the romance was not the main plot of this story. But maybe that was just my impression. Either way, all their interactions were lovely!

Come for the GL, and stay for the amazing fantasy story. Or come for the fantasy story, and get introduced to the amazing GL :D

Also this was first the Xianxia I read, although I already knew some basics beforehand. The fantasy world was built super interestingly and explained well. So I'm happy with this being a good introduction to the genre!

My first chinese web novel! translated by DragonTL.

Honestly, I went in with low expectations but it's pretty good! There's lots of action, the characters are well-written, and the story is exciting. It reads very quickly and is a nice little fantasy story!

I'm not that familiar with the xianxia and wuxia genres so the beginning was a little rough for me while I tried to figure out the logistics of the magic and cultivation levels but once you figure it out it's pretty straightforward. I also expected it to be more romance-forward tbh, given the few cdramas I've seen and it's surface level similarities to western romantasy books I figured it was going to be like other romantasy books, where sure, there are fantasy elements but those elements are mostly to drive forward the romance. This story is pretty action-forward, and while you know that the main characters are going to get together they make it a real slow burn.

My unfortunately biggest complaint is the fan translation, which is primarily machine-translated. I ofc appreciate all fan translation/scanlation groups because otherwise who knows what content and when they might get an English translation but it's unfortunately obvious when groups use machine translation. The writing comes off as very straightforward and matter-of-fact, which is surprising for something with so many fantasy elements so I can't help but wonder if the details and complexities are lost in machine translation. But, I guess beggars (Me, a person who will not be learning Mandarin anytime soon) can't be choosers with who translates!

I absolutely loved it.
The story is very much a love story between Zhong Michu and Gu Fuyou.
The fights and phsychological stuff get very dark and sometimes graphic though so it is not purely a love(ly) story. It is also a story about war and how it affects people. Be warned: This book may just break ur heart (several times) and slowly put it together again.
I think the plot is thought out very good and the world building is really good in my opinion.
The writting style is very detailed and there are several plotpoints besides the main story.
Ao3 tags i would use to describe this book that may or may not spoil the book a bit:

GF = Gu Fuyou
ZM = Zhong Michu
Specific stuff from the book:

i also really liked the dynamic between the main couple and it reminded me of Wangxian, my favorite and only Danmei i have read yet. i want to read more Danmei and Baihe.

English name of the novel: The Dragon

I thought it was a bit slow to pick up at the start because it all felt like fun and fluff, but once the serious stuff started, I couldn't put it down.

The angst, the pain, the love, the joy, you feel them with the characters. The way the author describes them just clutches your heart and takes a hold of it.

And absolutely loved the way things/actions are described in this book. It feels real and magical, like you're witnessing it in person.

The love and devotion of Zhong Michu for Gu Fuyou is both enviable and heartbreaking to see.

My favorite quote from the novel: "For every year, a tree of longing; for a hundred years, longing without end."

10/10 a must read! Not only for the gl, but it's a great story.

this was amazing. I am surprised it's not more popular. beautiful story, fantastically executed. although i do believe it could have been bettered by some editing and pacing all events in a similar manner instead of some taking their time and others passing by so quickly.

though it was shorter than other cnovels I have read, the complex events really broke me and made me cry so much. please author, let them be happy and domestic and no more tribulations!!!

As much as I liked the base plotline and the intrigue, it was quite simple and a bit too linear for me, the most common ark structure - naive youth, growth, tragedy and tension climax and vengeance ark - and I think maybe also the XianXia setting is not really for me
But great depth of character for both Fuyou and Michu!

DNF - at 78%.

I know, I was almost at the end, but I just couldn’t carry on. This book is rated quite highly on NU but perhaps because Xuanhuan is an absolute favorite genre of mine - I expected more from it.

This is a baihe, but even at 78% there’s no romance or inkling of the couple getting together - which felt rather frustrating. In fact there’s hardly any chemistry between the leads, that you would expect in a slowburn.

To make things worse, the MC does not undergo any form of emotional maturity even after 700 years. There’s this jarring turn of events that take the reader by surprise - almost as if the author didn’t know how handle the pace at which they were telling the story and resorted to an almost millenium long time-skip.

There’s so much potential wasted for both the emotional growth of the characters as well as their spiritual strength.

The interesting premise of the story where the MC has wasted spiritual roots and relies on her aptitude for formations completely collapses from the second volume. Everything I liked about her is simply overlooked and she’s suddenly in the body of an almost immortal Azure Phoenix?

What about the fearlessness that she had, the great ideas that she had? I thought she was going to use her brains and determination to fuel her revenge.

All of it gets buried under her pathetic plans that lack strategy and direction. Don’t get me wrong - I looked forward so much to her revenge but it was so badly executed that I did not feel a drop of satisfaction when her enemies finally reached their demise. She seemed so poorly written and no longer like the MC of the novel and more of a b-grade wannabe villain.

Don’t even get me started on Zhong Michu who is the Temu version of Lan Zhan from MDZS. She is such a one dimensional character without any personality or charisma. I understand wanting to write a cold beauty but even Lan Zhan our queen of stony faced beauties had so much character, charisma and depth that you couldn’t help but want to know more about him even when it seemed like he had nothing more than a cold face to offer.

The book is called “The Dragon” however the dragon in this book is more like a lizard. It’s so underwhelming that I feel like I wasted the past few days hoping to eventually reach the pinnacle of the book that would make me go “ah I’m glad I stuck it out”. That never came almost close to the end.

Maybe at 90% it might have turned around however I no longer feel invested in the story or characters. Too much melodrama without substance, too much forced proximity labelled as romance and such a poor take on my favorite genre Xuanhuan.

So much potential simply wasted.

“Life may be unpredictable, but I am certain.”

honestly i feel like a lot of the meaning was lost from the translation (which was not great in my opinion) but i've never related to a character as much as i have to gu fuyou. i cried very hard over her family. lowkey they gave the lesbian equivalent of mdzs.

towards the end i felt that certain decisions were made that didn't really contribute to character development, and instead just fit into the flaws established in the beginning, but i guess it makes them more human.
