I cannot see too many of these characters making it into old age, with the number of head injuries involved. Obviously this is a very active and exciting adventure novel, with a modicum of violence (although not of the slo-mo blood spattering variety--well, maybe just a little bit), but the scenes shift rapidly enough that one doesn't dwell on the violence for too long.
An awful lot of threads are tied together in this particular novel, combining characters better known from other series (who are fully introduced within the story), bringing their special talents to the solution of the immediate problem, with threads running back through history to the Conquistadors, and forward to modern Europe. (A separate ongoing expedition is also hinted at, promising possible future novels with various members of this team.)
Not to be trite, this is definitely an action-packed tale, and a lot of fun! And, yes, it does stand well on its own.
A great international thriller with a well written storyline and outstanding realistic characters. A real page turner with plenty of action, suspense, and twists/turns. John and Mako make an excellent father/son team. Highly recommended book and author.
