An Enduring Hope

Rate this book
Can one find hope after their happily ever after is stolen?Nadja's happily ever after seems just within reach when her childhood sweetheart proposes. But when her brothers are transformed into swans by their new stepmother, she has to put her life on hold. In order to break the curse, Nadja must sew a shirt made of thistles for each brother. And if she says a single word before she is finished, her brothers will remain swans forever. Maxmillian returned from the Crusades with one goal in mind, to wed the girl he left behind so long ago. The last place he expects to find her, though, is wandering around his woods, refusing to say a word. Marriage is the only option for him to keep her in his castle and away from the family she fears to return to. But that might not be enough when his own people begin whispering about a witch on the loose and Nadja becomes the chief suspect. “An Enduring Hope,” a retelling of Wild Swans, is a standalone novella, complete with tropes like friends to lovers, marriage of convenience, and he falls first. It is part of the “Hope Ever After” series, a collection of twenty hopeful and uplifting fairy tale retellings. Each book is written by a different author so it can be enjoyed in any order. The proceeds from this series are donated to the O.U.R. (Operation Underground Railroad) to rescue children from exploitation and trafficking.

An Enduring Hope, by Jes Drew, is book 9 of 19, part of the Hope Ever After series. If you love fairy tales then these books are for you. An Enduring Hope continues the series and tells the story of The Wild Swans. Nadja is a daughter of a baron who remarries a beautiful but evil woman. This woman will turn Nadja's brothers into Swans and poor Nadja will do anything to save her brothers. Part of the curse is that she is not allowed to use her voice to explain to anyone why she is knitting shirts out of nettles, not even to her one true love, Baron Maximilian.

Hope is action and Nadja will suffer through hard work and many disasters as she tries to save her brothers. I loved all of the action in the story, and was glued to the book to see what happens next. And, when the evil wife showed back up, well, not what I was expecting! If you love clean and happily ever after fairy tales then I strongly recommend An Enduring Hope. Plus, the proceeds of this book and those in the series will go to supporting hope and awareness in fighting human trafficking. So not only do you get a wonderful and lovely story to read but you too are raising hope for many of the less fortunate. I did receive an ARC copy and these are my own comments. I have purchased others in the series and plan on owning all 19 when they come out, for they are all excellent stories.

Short, sweet, and emotional, this was a great retelling of the seven swans fairy tale.
I wished there was more to this story because I would've liked to know what her love interest experienced, their childhood romance, and what happens going forward. That being said, it worked as an overall story in terms of plot and I really like Nadja, the main character. The test of her will really came through and I enjoyed it. The Christian elements and ties to true magic v. dark magic were very good and I really liked how the author balanced showing true faith v. judgmental faith. Nadja's brothers were fun, too, and I could totally see spin offs with the brothers finding true love as well. As for Maximilian, I really wanted to know more, and their romance seemed rushed (even though they've loved each other since childhood). That being said, it was really, really sweet and I enjoyed it.
Content Warnings: Witchcraft, PG level gore and violence, descriptive kisses between a married couple.

In "An Enduring Hope" by Jes Drew, the classic fairy tale of The Wild Swans is beautifully retold, adding a fresh and enchanting twist to a lesser-known story. Nadja's world is turned upside down when her brothers are cursed into swans by their new stepmother. To break the curse, she must sew shirts made of thistles for each brother, all while keeping silent until her task is complete. Drew masterfully captures Nadja's tension and anxiety as she navigates through the challenges of her quest, highlighting her determination and love for her family.

The rarity of The Wild Swans as a retold tale adds to the enjoyment of the story, offering readers a unique and captivating narrative. Drew's imaginative retelling breathes new life into the timeless tale, making it all the more enchanting and memorable.

The blossoming romance between Nadja and Baron Maximilian adds depth to the story, with Maxmillian's chivalry and kindness complementing Nadja's strength and perseverance. Their love is sweet and heartwarming, serving as a beacon of hope amidst the darkness of the curse. Drew skillfully portrays their bond, showcasing the power of love to overcome obstacles.

The strong sibling bond between Nadja and her brothers is another highlight of the story, demonstrating the lengths to which Nadja is willing to go to protect and save her family. Even in the face of adversity, Nadja remains steadfast in her commitment to her brothers, showcasing the importance of family and loyalty.

Drew's world-building and exploration of magic add depth to the narrative, providing a captivating backdrop for Nadja's journey. The intricate magic system and vivid descriptions immerse the reader in the fantastical world of the story, leaving them eager to explore further.

Overall, "An Enduring Hope" is a captivating tale that will tug at your heartstrings and keep you turning pages until the very end. With its themes of love, sacrifice, and perseverance, it is a must-read for fans of fairy tale retellings.

Thank you to Jes Drew for allowing me to listen to a copy of this book. I want to say that I haven't read Wild Swans, but I really enjoyed this book. Maximillian is such a cinnamon roll that would kill you. And the PLOT. The plot was so good, and I loved it. And how the brothers acted was SO FUNNY to me and I don't know why. This book was just so magical, and the narration was SO EFFING GOOD. I highly recommend experiencing this book this way if you can. Better yet, read along with an ebook or physical edition. I really want to read more of the Hope Ever After series and more from Jes Drew. Especially after loving both of the reads I've read from her so far.

One of my favorite Hans Christian Anderson fairytales is The Wild Swans, so I very much enjoyed this retelling!

As the story begins, you are immersed into Nadja’s world where she must not only protect herself & her brothers, but accomplish what she must to break the curse. Having to sew shirts of thistles as fast as she can, as well as not being able to speak, you feel Nadja’s tensions & anxiousness throughout the story.

Maxmillian & Nadja’s love was so sweet, with Maxmillian’s chivalry & kindness, & Nadja’s determination & perseverance strengthening their bond. I loved how protective Maxmillian was of Nadja & how much he wanted to help her anyway he could, even when he didn’t fully understand what was happening.

Nadja’s love & protective nature of her brothers & support from Maxmillian drives the story, fueling her with the strength to continue on with what she must do to try & break the curse.

This was a very enjoyable read, & I would recommend to anyone who enjoys fairytale retellings.

This was a fairy tale Retelling of Wild Swans about Nadja, her seven brothers, and her childhood sweetheart Maxmillian. I really enjoyed reading about Nadja and Maxmillian and hearing them reminisce about their childhood when they were reunited at the beginning of the story before Nadja's father married their stepmother. This was an enjoyable retelling of this fairy tale and I look forward to reading more from this series of standalone fairy tale retellings.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new-to-me fairytale retelling. I didn’t want to put it down.

A powerful story of love and hope. Nadja will sacrifice everything, even her life, to save her seven brothers from a curse that turned them into swans.

After the curse, everyone has turned against her including her father. Fleeing from accusations of witchcraft, Nadja escapes into the woods with her brothers.

When her childhood friend Maximillian stumbles upon her, he doesn’t hesitate to help her. Even though he has no idea what has happened, he vows to protect her no matter what. Maximillian is so gentle and understanding and patient.

I absolutely loved the strong sibling bond between Nadja and her brothers. Even when she had the chance to defend herself, she chose to risk her life to protect and save her brothers.

A wonderful fairytale retelling that touched my heart and held me captive until the end. This is a must read.

I wasn’t sure if I ever read the original fairytale of the Wild Swans, but the more I progressed in this story, the more I remembered.

So I actually don’t know which details were added, removed or changed, but this retelling obviously reminded me of the original and I enjoyed reading this book a lot.

Even though I obviously knew how it would end (Happy Ever After series and all…) I found myself totally engrossed in the story and wanting to see how everything played out.

There were a few creepy scenes in a graveyard that added to the suspense and since I’m a scaredy cat I was dreading these scenes reading through the night, but obviously couldn’t put the book down.

I was initially a bit disappointed that the love interests shows his intentions and is open about his feelings nearly from the beginning, since I do like a bit of angsty romance, but it actually was perfect for this story and I loved how Nadja and Maximillian met again, how he just knew that Nadja must have a strong reason for not talking, for behaving in such a strange way and that the accusations that she’s a witch can’t possibly be true. He was so kind, thoughtful and sweet even when he was understandably frustrated and confused and I think Drew did a great job of showing his mixed and sometimes contradicting emotions, making him a realistic and great character.

Nadja was as equally as great. I know this is a story, a fairytale. But I kept thinking - since keeping my tongue, especially when faced with injustice, is one of my biggest difficulties - how amazing it was that Nadja was able to stay quiet for such a long time. Never able to pour her heart out about her fears about her brothers, her anger with her stepmom, her frustration with her father, her love for Maximillian.

Their love story was so sweet, so selfless and considerate. I really loved them as a couple and as characters. And of course I not only loved how protective Maximillian was of Nadja, but also how protective Nadja was of her brothers. I really do love strong sibling relationships.

I also think the world building was great, but I would love to have learned a bit more about the magical and “religious” system, because I didn’t understand it completely. Drew explained the different creatures in a glossary and it seemed like these specifics to this world would be used in a longer series, but I couldn’t find out if An Enduring Hope is part of such a series or not.

I would love to read more from this world and especially learn more about the Emperor God and the Creator.

I was captivated by this story and am very happy I picked it up. Absolutely enjoyed and recommend it!

Will Hope (and Love) Prevail?

Audiobook Review:
I absolutely adore that contemporary authors retell classic fairy tales. I'll admit I'm not familiar with the original Wild Swans fairy tale that this story is based on, but it certainly has themes consistent with them: evil stepmother, magical curses, stout-hearted heroine, and handsome, kind hero (not a prince in this case, but a baronet). This story ranges all over the emotional map, and you can't help but empathize with the heroine as she moves from beloved daughter to outcast to beloved bride to doomed to … I don't want to give too much away! Circumstances alone don't make her empathetic. She is also so self-sacrificing and loving, willing to give the utmost right up until the end to save her seven brothers who have been turned into swans by their new stepmother. Let's just say she wants her new husband all to herself … and wants nothing to do with her eight stepchildren. She is the traditional evil stepmother often seen in fairy tales, casting a spell on the boys using dark magic but accusing her stepdaughter of doing the deed. The young woman runs away to the forest, where she learns how to reverse the spell, but at great temporary cost. Sewing stinging nettles … ouch!

I loved the scenes between the heroine and Maximilian, the hero, a young man who has had feelings for her since they were young. He finds her in the forest and immediately takes her under his protection, bringing her back to his castle. Part of what she must do to counteract the spell is remain completely silent and not even write notes about what is happening. Maximilian accepts this, even though he doesn't understand. The book is told strictly from the heroine's perspective, and his steadfast love for her despite everything, as seen through her eyes, is heartwarming. Near the end, all seems lost, despite the hero and heroine's strong bond and the hard, painful work the heroine has done to try to save her brothers. The way the author resolved it was absolutely perfect. It doesn't come out of the blue and was actually foreshadowed much earlier in the book. Yes! I love it when authors use tried-and-true literary devices like that. This story certainly made me smile (sweet Gustaf, the youngest brother!) and tear up on more than one occasion. I love it when a worthy heroine finds her one true love. Sigh! A story like this is what all hopeless romantics like me wish for. Highly recommended.

I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

🦢 This was my first Audio Book, and it was a really enjoyable experience!! The narrator's voice was beautiful, airy, and fully captures Nadja's anxiety and fear as she comes to grips with her new reality after her evil stepmother turns her brothers into swans, forcing her life into turmoil as she tries desperately to restore their humanity.

🌿 Jes Drew's unique storytelling flair takes this classic tale by Hans Christian Andersen and turns it into a captivating tale full of heartbreak, intrigue, and a deep abiding love that "bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." (1 Corinthians 13:7)...I loved how Jes portrays Nadja's deep love for her brothers and how much she was willing to endure and sacrifice for them..

💚 I love the Childhood Friends to Lovers Trope, and Jes really brought it to life in this book! The romance between Nadja and Maximillion was sweet, endearing and swoon worthy!!

🌲 The world building was captivating and realistic, I loved the atmospheric details of the forest this story took place in!

💚 If you love tropes like this then you need to give this book a read or listen!:

While I've not read the original Wild Swans story, I enjoyed Jes Drew's retelling. The world the story is set in comes from Drew's Sunset at Dawn series, so if you've read Betrayal and Banditry, you'll have some familiarity with the terminology and world structure.

I loved the budding romance between Nadja and Maximillian, two young nobles who shared a childhood but were separated over time by duties, magical training, and the Crusades. Their reunion at a ball sends sparks flying, and I loved cheering on their love. They face several trials together, especially once Nadja takes a vow of silence to save her brothers. Without the ability to talk, Nadja has to endure the pain of not being able to explain what's going on to the man she loves. But Maximillian remains steadfast, if a bit frustrated, and learns to trust Nadja through the challenges.

The sibling bonds within this story are sincerely endearing, as Nadja works hard to remedy the situation before being condemned as a witch. She faces some vile accusations, and wow, are her enemies harsh! Nadja's ability to keep fighting despite the painful words made me love her character and enduring heart. Her fighting spirit was very inspirational.

An Enduring Romance is a standalone fantasy romance, the tenth book in the Hope Ever After series, by Jes Drew.

This is a retelling of the Hans Christen Anderson classic tale of the girl whose eleven brothers are cursed to become swans and the only way she can help them is by taking a vow of silence and making her brothers clothing made of stinging nettles. I've loved this fairytale ever since the first retelling that I read of it, Juliet Marillier's Seven Waters trilogy. This is also the second retelling of this story that I've read in as many weeks (Eliza's Cursed Dragon by Bella Blair) and I have loved them both!

Nadja is the heroine of the story, whose brothers are cursed and her father's lands fall to the mercy of her wicked witch stepmother. Knowing the massive task that is ahead of her - the vow of silence, stinging nettles etc. - Nadja is forced to flee to the woods to find safety. Her childhood sweetheart Maximillian is her knight in shining armour and had appeared as a suitor before her brothers were cursed. Maximillian is an absolute sweetheart and has absolute trust in Nadja and will do anything to keep her safe, even if he doesn't understand why she cannot talk or what she is doing, or the mysterious swans that hang around her.

When Nadja's childhood sweetheart finally proposes, she's very happy. Unfortunately, that same night her father decides to marry himself, and the idea of her marriage is shelved. Things fall apart completely when her stepmother turns her seven brothers into swans and tries to pin the blame on her. Nadja discovers a way to save them, but the danger is far from over. Maxmillian loves Nadja, but when she turns up in his wood acting strangely and refusing to speak, that love is put to the test. Can he protect her when he doesn't understand what's going on? And can she complete her work in time to save her brothers?

I still don't feel like I know how one turns nettles into thread, let alone shirts, but let's ignore that. If you like a truly evil villain who finally gets their comeuppance, this definitely delivers. In fact, seeing her losing was almost better than seeing Nadja and Maxmillian winning! That said, I loved his patience, trust and caring when she couldn't tell him what was going on, and it was even better once he could really learn the truth and see her vindicated. Not my favourite retelling, but still a good read.

I loved this book. I've always loved fairy tales and this story definitely gave me that feeling. I loved the setting and [most of] the characters. You can really feel that attraction and chemistry between Nadja and Maxmillian when they reunited at the ball. I loved that they were childhood friends and had fond memories to reconnect over. Of course shortly after that is when everything changes. I was completely riveted to this story.

I'd actually never heard of the fairy tale The Wild Swans- of which this story is a retelling of- and even more surprised it was one of Hans Christian Anderson's classics. I suppose I have more reading to do!

I listened to this audiobook narrated by Kaden Catalina and Kenneth Faircloth Jr. Both are new-to-me narrators but I thought they did a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. Their tones of voice felt perfectly suited to the setting and feel of the story. I hope to hear more from both of them. As well as read/listen to more retellings from this series and author.

Overall: 5 stars

I loved this retelling of a fairytale with supernatural touch.

This book is part of a series of novella’s that contain retellings of fairy tales to raise money for charity.

As I understand this story is a retelling of the fairytale 7 swans. I am not very familiar with the original, but I kind of know the premise. I did not google it to compare it with this one. I wanted to judge this story purely on its own merits.

And it did not disappoint. It has all the elements that make a great fantasy story; drama, suffering, magic, supernatural creatures, justice, love and a happy end.

The characters are very relatable, except for the villains, but then again they are villains of course, but they have very believable ambitions/ reasons.

The story is a wonderful fairy tale with a nice kind of relaxed pace, which also makes me curious about this author's other work.

Silence is golden. - Nadja and her brothers are forced to flee their home by the perfidy of their cruel, grasping stepmother. Saved from the dangers of the forest by her childhood friend and only love, Maxmillian, she painstakingly and faithfully works to save herself from a lifetime of utter silence and her beloved brothers from a lifetime of having feathers. Estries and werwolves - dangers she faces to bring her family back to their human selves. And through it all, Maxmillian remains steadfast in his devotion, trusting in the love she expresses with her eyes though not a word ever passes her lips.

I had never heard of this fairytale before so I decided to read it when the opportunity arose. I'm glad I did. Such a good story about the power of hope.

An Enduring Hope by Jes Drew
☺ A quick marriage
☺ Childhood friends
☺ Stolen happiness
☺ A curse to be broken
☺ Sweet and swoony romance, just kisses (no spice)
Genre: Fantasy romance
A retelling of the Wild Swans. This one does stick pretty close to the original tale which I think is a sensible option considering the tale is lesser known, while still fitting in wth the author's world. Nadja is preparing for her happily ever after with her prince charming when her life takes an unhappy turn. My one question was how exaxtly did Nadja turn nettles into shirts using only a needle but I suppose that's a bit too much practical thinking for fairytales. Title was spot on! Would recommend.
Part of the Hope Ever After series which can be read in any order

An Enduring Hope was honestly the sweet romance I didn't know I needed! The characters were written really well, and I loved the chemistry between Nadja and Maxmillian! It was really nice to see the love interest in the story to actually care for Nadja and stick by her side no matter what. I loved how Nadja was willing to do anything for her brothers and the love for her family she displayed. As the oldest in my family, I could really relate to her. I also liked how fast paced this book was. It fit the story really well! Definitely recommend if you're looking for a short, sweet read!

Wild swans/Seven Swans is one of my all time favorite fairy tales, and so my standard for retellings is pretty high; and this one met it.

I loved that the sewing of the shirts did NOT take seven years, but was instead very fast paced (though I do wonder at how feasible this is, seamstresses might need weigh in on this part).

Maximillian was so swoony, and steadfast! It literally hurt my heart when she had to disappoint him in order to focus on the shirts.

Can we please de-frock the priest? I need an epilogue showing him being thrown out of his fancy chapel and relegated to a tiny parish at the far end of the empire please.

I adore fairytale retellings! It is always interesting to see what the author will do to make a unique story from the tale. MFC Nadja finds herself in a precarious situation to save her brothers. When her childhood sweetheart Maxmillian proposes, she should be joyous, but she must focus on the task put forth for her by her stepmother... in silence. Luckily Maxmillian is the picture of chivalry. Truly swoonworthy! Especially given how the two have been friends for so long that their romance was just so cute! I really enjoyed the magical/supernatural elements, the fairytale nods throughout, and the adorableness between the two main characters! All in all, a fantastic read!

My first fantasy romance book in a while, I enjoyed the twists and the message of this book, I for sure enjoyed the brothers in both forms, and the romance was just perfect, I love that it wasn't a love at first sight kinda thing, I appreciate that they had history and that made the plot really make sense to me. I love a good villain as well, I just hope it was longer and ended with more action.

I haven't read a retelling of "The Wild Swans" yet, especially since it isn't used very often. It tells a wonderful and captivating story that takes you into another world. I like the fairy tale a lot and feel like there are very few retellings of it. I liked the premise but the timeline felt rushed and inconsistent. Maxmillion was a saint, so beyond understanding, I wish we had more of his story. There were parts of the story that I felt were never explained fully. Again, I liked the premise and it’s a pretty good retelling.

Quick and easy read.
It is a beautiful retelling of The Wild Swans. I like the details which Jes Drew has made different from the fairy tail but still kept true to the original story.

I really love that Nadja's love interest is someone she already knows an another stranger, for me it makes it more believable.

I believe this is a story I will reread again.
