I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was full of stories and facts about a game warden’s life in Maine. I particularly enjoyed some of the funny stories and I learned a lot about their job and their responsibilities. Reading a story from someone who’s been there and done that makes all the difference in the way the story is told. This book covers warden wives as well and their role and participation in the rescue of animals. The wives also field calls for the warden husband and assist their husbands when necessary. The author gives a brief history of the Maine game wardens. He describes how things were done initially without modern technology. He also pays tribute to those wardens who lost their lives in the line of duty. I learned a lot from reading this book. It opened my eyes to all of the difficulties and skills that all wardens need to have. As one warden put it “Being a game warden is not a job, it’s a way of life.”
While the topic was very interesting(the entire reason I found the book in the first place) the writing seemed slow and repetitive. Every chapter consists of history behind the topic of choice(Warden Service history, search and rescue, wild animals, etc) then many stories regarding the topic. While it allows the experiences to become personal, because after all the author is a warden service veteran, the repetitiveness takes me out of the reading, and I'll find myself skimming, instead of reading. Overall, while the topic peaked my interest and the book is an interesting read, the repetitive dialogue, grammar, and overall chapter structure take me out of the reading and make it less interesting.
Life and Death in the North Woods: The story of the Maine Warden Service- by Eric Wight . . . A must read for anyone interested in the Maine Warden Service, the outdoors, and the great State of Maine! This book offers insight to the many aspects of a day in the life of a Maine Game Warden, including protecting fish and game, performing search and rescues, enforcing boat and recreational vehicle safety laws, and maintaining a safe environment for the rest of us to enjoy. A great companion to the TV series North Woods Law featuring Maine Game Wardens. Hats off to the Men and Women of the Warden Service who risk it all to protect our most valuable resources! . . -Logan . #northwoods #northwoodslaw #mainewardenservice #lawenforcement #backtheblue #environment #book #books #bookstagram #read #readersofinstagram #maine #newengland
History and day to day life of a Maine game warden. Interesting if you are into that sort of thing or were looking to become one. Lots of stories and adventures trying to let the public know what they do and why they do it. It isn’t because they want to ruin all your fun.
