MDZS will always hold a special place in my heart since it was my first. This feels more like a beautiful art book of a story I’ve consumed so many times in so many different mediums. I don’t think I would recommend this manhua as intro to MDZS or danmei in general but if you love the story, it’s definitely worth it IMO.

This volume reminded me of a few things I love about WWX 🥰

🪈WWX supporting JC- as his brother, a leader, etc
🪈WWX accepting that losing his sword arm is worth it for peace
🪈WWX realizing just how amazing LZ is
🪈WWX always having a soft spot for Wen Ning

As someone who started with The Untamed (the novels weren’t even completely officially published in English yet) I was reminded of something I loved about the live action more than the novels….
Yanli and Mianmian 😍 I love them so much. I was shocked when they weren’t as prevalent in the novels. Yanli not being a part of the scene where WWX and JC are being sent off from Lotus Pier trapped by Zidian kind of hurt 😭

Personally I loved this volume (and all previous ones) but I am biased towards this story so I have no idea if it’s actually a good manhua 🥴

Volume 9 of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (The Comic) continues to deliver emotional depth and character development while maintaining the series' engaging storytelling. This installment takes us back to earlier moments in Wei Wuxian’s life, offering insight into key relationships and setting the stage for later events. The dynamics between characters remain compelling, with moments of concern, misunderstanding, and fleeting warmth that make their interactions all the more impactful.

This volume also highlights the shifting tensions within the story, as alliances and loyalties are tested. Certain characters stand out even more, making you wish circumstances had been different for them. There are also moments of unguarded emotion that hit hard, showing rare sides of usually composed individuals. And of course, there are small yet memorable details—like the brief but charming appearance of Lan Wangji’s rabbits—that add an extra layer of charm to the storytelling.

Visually, my feelings about the art remain the same—it’s not exactly my preferred style, but it serves the story well enough. Since this is a manhua, the art plays a huge role in how the emotions and action come across, so I’ll likely keep mentioning it in future reviews. That being said, the pacing and emotional beats in this volume make it a strong entry in the series. With every new release, MDZS continues to prove why it’s such a beloved story, and this volume is no exception.

Premature death of Lotus Pier, pre-Sunshot Campaign would always be my heartbreak. Are you happy now that you’re making a single lady cry on Valentine’s day? And is it me, or Wuxian’s attack on Wen Chao and Wang Lingjiao was a little bit half-baked? I remembered vomiting at its description from the light novel, I wished I could feel that satisfaction again in the comics. It was a slow, painful death that even you could feel growling in the pit of your stomach. Still, I can’t help but think about how goated MDZS is. I love this world so much it hurts. My love for it is so big I can’t even fit it inside my heart. And I absolutely loved how misunderstood Wei Wuxian was. That’s what rumor’s all about. Now, indulge me, would you? Please? I’m dying out here!

Also, the cover! Help! This is one of the best covers from the series! It has that same feeling of terror with the dark vibes of light novel book three’s cover, with Wei Wuxian’s slow but imminent corruption, considering this volume was a chunk of book three. It’s giving Wei Wuxian: Conqueror of Burial Mounds. But you can never threaten him with his own good time. Ha! Joke’s on you, Wen dogs sun-asshats!

Feliz porque le dieron su merecido a la loca de Wan Lingjiao, es que se fue terrible desde el tomo pasado, además que mató a tanta gente por mero capricho!

Más feliz por las interacciones entre Lan Zhan y Wei Wuxian!! Cada vez más cerca y se puede ver el interés por el otro.

En cuanto a la historia tenemos flashback de varios momentos importantes, en especial los comienzos de Wei Wuxian en la cultivación demoníaca, al final de cuenta ha hecho mucho para poder cuidar y ayudar a Jiang Cheng, cómo esto se desvió? aún no se sabe pero vamos a eso poco a poco

"Return to Gusu with me" Lan Zhan

The cover with Wei Wuxian is so cool on this one.
Jiang Cheng mother Yu Ziyuan was known a Purple Spider and her spiritual weapon is Zidian.
His father Jiang Fengmian adopted Wei Wuxian after his parents died and raised him as his own. Wei Wuxian grew up to uphold the family motto the most.

Loved when Madam Yu slapped Wen Chao's woman in her place, who dared barged in and acted like she own the place lol
In the end though Lotus Pier paid a high price. I think it was inevitable.

This is where Wen Ning helped Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, and to save him, wei wuxian made up the story of Baoshan Sanren and gave up his golden core.

Wei Wuxian was captured by Wen Chao and thrown into the Burial Mounds...3 months later no one knows what happened but when Wei Wuxian returned he was darker and when he came to take revenge on the Wen Clan, he brought their nightmares to life. Scary satisfying.
As Jiang Cheng and Lan Zhan tracked this bizarre nightmare, they finally caught up to him only to see Wen Chao drastically altered looking like a living corpse and Wei Wuxian, well bro came back playing the dead.

The story about Wanji's parents is sad, baby Wanji 👶 😢.

I will say for this volume, I felt the mountain scene was rushed. I kind of wish they would have done what The Untamed did and have Wei Wuxian telling Jiang Cheng this was his only chance. Not to take that chance for granted. The mountain scene will come up again later, and although they can cover it then, it will lack the feeling because it wasn’t around the first time. It’s so important to have that moment before Wei Wuxian is thrown into the Burial Mounds. It speaks more here in this scene of sacrifice than it will later on. The mountain scene in this manhua was so quick. It really was pretty much one page and that was it.


But that ”Return to Gusu with me” scene hit so strong. Done perfectly. And the artist has done a perfect job portraying the emotions on both their faces, but especially Lan Wangji. That hurt from the misunderstanding and rejection was drawn so beautifully.

I know we don't see it for long but I do like the design of when Wei Ying is the Yiling Patriarch before he dies. This versions art is that is still pretty decent, even if I'm ultimately still not a fan of the overall style.

I’m not going to write a full review purely because my thoughts on this volume are pretty much exactly the same as my thoughts on every other volume. These are such fun reads and I love how the art style brings this story to life, but I do think the choppy cuts would make this tricky to read for anyone who wasn’t already familiar with the novels/show.

En este tomo vemos la destrucción de Yunmeng, Jian Cheng pierde a todos los que ama y su núcleo dorado.
Wei Wuxian lo protege y lo envía a ver a Baoshan Sanren, una sacerdotisa que es una leyenda.
Cuando vuelve empieza a reconstruir su hogar mientras busca a Wei Wuxian. Se une a los demás clanes para derrocar a los perros Wen.
En una de esas batallas se encuentra de nuevo con Wei Wuxian.
En eso volvemos al presente dónde Wei Wuxian herido, está siendo protegido por Lan Wangji en Gusu. Deben desenmascarar a Jin Guanyao, Lan Xichen se reserva su juicio pero estará atento, envía a Lan Wangji y Wei Wuxian a la colina de las cosas donde ellos se encuentran de nuevo con Wen Ning.
Emocionante lectura, rápida de leer y con momentos dulces.

Dernier volume avant la prochaine fournée qui devrait arriver début de l’année prochaine. Il ne reste globalement que deux fournées à venir, ce qui annonce la fin de la série pour 2028 je suppose (vu qu’ils font une fournée par an). Je reste d’avis qu’il est sans doute préférable de lire toute la série d’un seul coup, plutôt que d’avoir des gros trous comme je l’ai eu. Les noms étant déjà complexes à retenir (et parfois similaires), avoir un temps important entre chaque lecture n’aide pas non plus.

Au final, je me rends compte que c’est surtout avec le premier tome de chaque nouvelle fournée que j’ai du mal. Peut-être que je devrais relire le tome précédent à chaque fois, mais comme je range la série au fur et à mesure, je n’y ai plus accès facilement après lecture. Dans le tome précédent, notre duo préféré a commencé à enquêter pour découvrir l’identité du cadavre dont le corps avait été éparpillé un peu partout. En usant de ses techniques, Wei Wuxian est parvenu à trouver son identité, mais aussi celui qui le manipule. Malheureusement, ce dernier n’est pas n’importe qui et avec les années qui ont passées, il a une sacrée réputation (dans le sens positif du terme). Repéré alors qu’il tentait de quitter la pièce secrète, il rapporte tout ce qu’il a vu à son ami, tout en courant vers la zone concernée avant que les preuves ne soient cachées. Manque de bol, le coupable aura eu le temps qu’il faut pour cacher les preuves et fera en sorte que sa femme décède pour qu’elle enterre quelques secrets avec elle. L’identité de Wuxian sera également révélée, de quoi attiser encore un peu plus la colère ambiante. Les autres personnes présentes ne réfléchissent plus et agissent donc sous le coup de l’émotion. Wuxian finit blessé par cette altercation et fuit avec l’aide de Wangji. Ce dernier pourrait bien se mettre dans des problèmes importants pour cette raison, mais il s’en fiche, cette fois-ci, j’ai bien l’impression qu’il refuse de rester spectateur. Mais comme il croit en Wuxian, son frère croit que le coupable ne peut pas être la personne désignée… Ce dernier tente d’ailleurs de garder le frangin près de lui. Personne ne semble se douter d’une quelconque manipulation… Mais pour ma part, le choix d’attirer son attention pour le faire venir ailleurs n’est pas anodin. Soit il souhaite faire en sorte de le surveiller pour qu’il ignore la vérité, soit il souhaite lui faire quelque chose de bien plus sinistre (s’il manipule un cadavre, avec le retour de Wuxian, il lui sera facile de lui faire porter le chapeau en cas d’attaque par exemple). Je doute que l’avis de Wangji serait alors suffisant pour prouver son innocence…

Cela pourrait paraître absurde, mais il est désormais prouvé qu’il a déjà tué plusieurs de ses proches pour atteindre le sommet. Qu’il a également modifié des accords dans les musiques qu’il a joué pour manipuler autrui et surtout, qu’il a les livres de Wuxian concernant certaines techniques (dont celle de manipulation de cadavres je suppose). Malheureusement, certaines de ses preuves sont surtout prouvées par la présence du frangin, donc s’il lui arrive malheur, le duo aura du mal à convaincre. Dès que je pense à cet éloignement, je ne peux qu’imaginer le pire à son sujet. L’autre est un parfait manipulateur qui a également bien gagné en influence. Le fait que personne ne souhaite croire en Wuxian, alors qu’il n’a pas l’air méchant pour un sous, me laisse vraiment perplexe. Qu’a-t-il bien pu faire lors de sa première vie pour autant s’attirer la foudre des autres ? Je le vois mal élever une armée de mort vivant pour conquérir le monde. De plus, ce tome apporte un éclaircissement sur ce qu’il lui est arrivé, comment il a fini par dévier vers une voie plus sombre techniquement parlant. J’en viens à me demander s’il n’a pas déjà été piégé la première fois ou bien, s’il n’a pas fait exprès d’être détesté pour que son frère de cœur puisse devenir chef de clan. Après tout, il est montré qu’il y avait déjà une certaine rivalité entre les deux personnages et Wuxian ayant éliminé la plupart des ennemis à la place de son frère de cœur, ce dernier pourrait mal le prendre. Je ne serais pas étonnée que certains membres, survivants, du clan auraient préférés ce dernier pour cette raison.

Le doy 4 estrellas no porque no me haya gustado, pero después de leerme el libro pues si se siente que va muy rápido por lo que no se nota la profundidad en los arcos, la verdad volver a leer todo lo que pasó en Yummeng me pone bastante triste porque pasaron un montón de cosas en tan poco tiempo, me da mucha pena por Jing Cheng que tenía todo y luego tuvo que perder su hogar, sus padres y sus amigos, además de su núcleo, aunque después lo recupera, admito que cuando leí por primera vez la venganza de Wei Wuxian me sentí muy feliz 😂😂 si se lo merecían al chile.

Algo que me gusta mucho del manhua es sin duda las expresiones que le ponen a los personajes, hace que todo sea más cómico y que no se sufra tanto, en un momento estás en el momento más triste de la vida de un personaje y al siguiente te estás riendo por sus caras xD Mis caras favoritas son las de Lan Zhan, es super gracioso ver a un personaje con una cara tan seria con unas caritas super monas xD

The memories turn to focus on Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng at Lotus Pier and the events following the Wen's takeover. The escape and details around Lotus Pier differ a bit from the anime, but make more sense given the searches, though the lack of confirmation or any resolution regarding their parents is a tad strange in the midst of all the other details. Wuxian and Wangji seem to be putting a lot of pieces together and fortunately have been safe so far, though it looks like time may be running out with this latest visit. Truly, it's amazing how calm Wangli remains in this new older version when dealing with Wuxian's antics and whims. We should be catching up to a rather large part of their history, though the raids seem to have been glossed over in comparison to the details in the anime - another arc that has a lot more variation, though it works well between the different medias.

I absolutely loved everything about this volume. From the gorgeous cover to the amazing story. No matter how many times I read the mo dao story, I never get bored of it. I especially love all the panels in which Wangxian interact but all characters are important.

This volume contains the fall of the Jiangs which is a chapter that really pisses me off. The Jiangs are such hypocrits really. I'll forever blame the Jiang parents for what happened next, though adult Jiang Cheng is a real ass for never taking responsibility for what be did and how he treated Wei Ying or what his parents did.

I can't wait for volume 10
