Indomitable

Rate this book
Indomitable is the powerful story of Karl, a German immigrant in England in the 1900s. Arriving as a boy in 1899, Karl misses his homeland. Clinging to his heritage, Karl returns to Germany to complete his National Service in the Imperial German Navy. It is only his love for the beautiful Lily that brings him back to England. As war breaks out Karl is interned and isolated from his young family. Resolute and determined, Karl survives this ordeal and the unimaginable loss that follows. Despite the continued refusal to grant him British citizenship he builds a successful business and becomes wealthy. The British Government seek him out to assist them, as the storm of war once more gathers over Europe.

Karl’s journey continues in 1930’s Germany, where he survives an encounter with the Nazi’s, but not without close personal tragedy. Stoically he forges onwards, creating greater success for himself and his family.

Indomitable is a grand, but still intimate story of a man, seemingly at odds with the world in which he lives. Witness some of the pivotal events of the 20th century played out through the eyes of this honourable man. Never faltering, he valiantly battles through the changing war- torn and political landscape of his time.

When they say truth is stranger than fiction, they must have been reading about this book. Whilst there are elements of fiction, the story follows the life of the author's grandfather very closely. Everything he endured but also his ability to bounce back and overcome. Astonishing. The below is a snippet from a review from Amazon by the author's brother.

"The truth was both different, and more impressive! In 1996 on my arrival in command of a U.K. artillery regiment destined for Mount Igman overlooking Sarajevo as part of the NATO forces stabilising the Bosnian Civil War, I was interviewed by Sky TV for a news item broadcast widely. Some time later I received a letter asking if I was the grandson of Louis, my grandfather. Tantalisingly the author announced that if so, he was his great friend and had been with him in Germany prior to the outbreak of the Second World War and had eventually been chased out of Germany into Switzerland by the Gestapo."

There is something for everyone within Indomitable - love, war, friendship and heartbreak. A truly fantastic read.

Excellent family history

This was so interesting and felt personal too as willy was my great grandad making karl a great uncle. I loved the insight into their lives as I knew nothingn of this side of the family. Each chapter made me want to read more. The basis of the story being true. Well done Guy and thank you. Look forward to the next book.

I really enjoyed this book, it was interesting, educational, well researched and imaginative. The main characters are well described and you certainly start to care about what happens to them. I have also bought this book for my dad who loves all things to do with WW2. Well worth a read.

What a fabulous read.

Set a little bit of family history, a grandfather who emigrated from Germany to Britain during the 1890s.
Follow his life through two world wars, that rip his family and friendships apart and forgive some stilted conversation, and well worth five of my stars!
