Why "Extraordinary Jordyn" is a Must-Read?
Extraordinary Jordyn and her Bionic Ears go beyond a children's story – it's a celebration of individuality, promoting self-love and acceptance.
Perfect for parents and teachers looking to instill confidence and resilience in young minds. An excellent resource for initiating conversations about diversity, disability, and the importance of inclusion.A captivating blend of imagination and reality that sparks curiosity about space and the limitless possibilities within ourselves.
Jordyn’s story about her Bionic Ears follows her journey of others accepting her unique qualities, while also working on believing them herself! As a previous Deaf Educator, there’s so much positive impact in teaching these inclusive practices, especially with students in the mainstream setting. The story is beautiful and the illustrations are incredible. I love that so many little deaf children will see themselves and her experiences in her. Of course, I would have loved to see some sign language in the book (through her communication or through items in the classroom), but completely understand the cochlear implant-user audience Dr. Simmons is trying to reach. I look forward to seeing this series grow and having Jordyn potentially meet other deaf and hard of hearing individuals! Thank you, Dr. Simmons, for sharing your book with me before release! Best of luck!
This picture book has a deaf MC who experiences an unkind reaction from another child. Her parents talk about the positives of her hearing loss, like how she can sleep despite her brother crying at night, and how her hearing loss is a part of her. She goes on to see this child again and they end up bonding over a common interest.
I think this would be great for emerging readers as it does have more words per page. It may also work as a readaloud in a 1st grade class. It would work great for kids who are beginning to read independently as a pre-cursor to early chapter books. It's a great book for introducing conversations around disability and reinforcing compassion for others.
The author reached out to me for a review. All opinions are my own.
As a parent of a child with hearing loss and wears cochlear implants I can say we can relate to this story. I love how the author is able to bridge the gap between those with disabilities and those who don’t have disabilities. She shows that yes we have differences but in our own unique ways we are the same. I think it is an excellent book that helps us teach our kids & ourselves bout empathy, kindness, respect, and the value of friendship no matter our differences. Most important help people self advocate, educate, and be more confident bout themselves they are not alone.
Extraordinary Jordyn was a great book!! There were so many things that I loved about it! One was representation. There are a lot of cultures represented in the book. Also, it teaches different lessons such as inclusion, overcoming difficulties, and treating people like you want to be treated. This is a great book to help teach inclusion to your class or kids. It allows them to see that although people may look different, they can still have the same similarities as you!! Great story!! Loved it!!
This was a wonderful picture book! The illustrations were gorgeous and vibrant and I loved the representation of having a Black main character who uses hearing aids. I have not seen many picture books with main characters who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. It is important that children are able to see themselves reflected in literature. I look forward to sharing this story with the children that I work with. This story could lead to powerful discussions about bullying and why we should embrace the differences of one another. Thank you Dr. Simmons for writing this beautiful story.
Such a wonderful story about diversity and a young girl who is different. I LOVE that her parents are so helpful with the affirmations. I thought it was funny when her mom said she sleeps through the night when the baby cries. A lot of it is focused on the positives of having her bionic ears. It's so great for kids to learn that they might meet someone like Jordyn! I will definitely be reading this again with my kids!

This book is a must-read for all kids and adults. It’s a refreshing and necessary story with an impactful representation of hearing loss disability. Parents and teachers, please consider adding it to your bookshelves. Jordyn is indeed extraordinary!
Representation matters! I loved seeing a little black girl with a cochlear implant and how she used kindness and fondness of space to bond with and relate to a little boy who was teasing her.
The author has Usher syndrome, the leading genetic cause of combined deafness and blindness. It's empowering.
I love that this book features a little girl with hearing aids. Especially bright colorful ones! I also appreciate the end with models for how anyone can learn to be inclusive. Hope to see more from this author in the future!!
Would recommend to anyone trying to diversify their child’s library. The illustrations and colors are great! Great representation of hearing loss and acceptance.
