Cass: Surrender to Love

Rate this book
Cassius Knight is a man every woman thought they could change. He prefers to do everything alone and that’s what makes him so intriguing. With charming looks, he can pull any woman he wants but he has nothing for them outside of the bedroom. Women are temporary fixes, and he makes it clear that they’ll never be anything more.

Dylan Cambridge comes across as the sweetest and most caring person you’ll ever meet, except she’s not the pushover you think she is. As a woman who prides herself in being upfront and honest, she too has a past that can ruin her future endeavors. When it comes to a man, she’d rather stay alone than deal with the aftermath of dating one. However, one doesn’t seem to fade the way the others have.

With them both not wanting to give the other a real shot, they find themselves in a dilemma. Many have asked why do fools fall in love and it’s simply because it can’t be avoided.

Cass, Surrender To Love was a book that had me simultaneously intrigued and ethically concerned. The two main characters, Cass and Dylan, are both Psychologists with complicated pasts. Cass owns his own practice and Dylan owns a company that is anonymous and allows clients to vent without judgement. In addition to owning her own company, Dylan is a single mother by choice with a “village” helping her raise her young black son, Dean.

The first few times the characters were in each other's space, they were not friends, but I felt the sexual tension and angst building. As the story progressed, the two were able to build an alliance, emotionally and professionally, subsequently reaching a happily ever after.

The book had so many plot twists, heartbreaking moments, and uncovered traumas that I wanted to climb inside the book and hug both characters. I believe the pacing was good and things were spaced out, so the heaviness was balanced. The thing about Connie is she pushes the envelope with her storylines and characters. Cass was complex; his childhood struggles followed him into adulthood and he battled depression and alcohol abuse. It broke me, because I know working in the helping profession, it is imperative to create boundaries and have a good work-life balance. Unfortunately, Cass struggled with those things, especially keeping his biases and moments of countertransference to himself when it came to his clients. However, I think Connie was able to develop his character that by the end, he didn't have those issues. I appreciated his accountability and willingness to own his shortcomings. I loved everything about Dylan! She was such a tirecracker, supermom, and equal life partner to Cass. Even when he struggled, she encouraged and did not judge him. I also think because they were able to form an emotional connection, it helped their relationship to blossom. I promise when Dean started saying “Daddy Cass” I wanted to cry; fatherhood was such a good look for him. The side characters brought much needed comedic relief and helped with understanding the pasts of Cass and Dylan. Throughout the book, it seemed that Cass was yearning to have a relationship with his brother. I felt this was key to his healing because he was carrying such a heavy load. Dylan’s relationship with her mother was heartbreaking. I kept thinking she has to let this woman go! Her mother was a horrible person, truly. The plot twists had me shook! I was not prepared for the twists.. drama, drama!

Overall, I enjoyed going on this journey. Love was not the goal for Cass and Dylan but it was what they needed! Together, they healed, created their own family, and reached a level of happiness they deserved. I appreciated their honesty, vulnerabilities, and their willingness to show up for their clients- even when they were going through their own turmoil. Good job, Connie!

Arc copy, all thoughts are my own.

I'm still processing this one. And...I am ambivalent about the theme. The story was a lot to unpack. With an abundance of opportunities to flesh out the storyline, I was outside looking in hoping maybe... I don't know... clearing up a few glitches would've helped me. Overall, 3.75 stars...

Whew chile,
When I first picked this book, I just thought they’d find love and heal but to see the healing, to see the connection and to understand their love was different. I love how they overcame their trauma through love.

Dylan was amazing! I love her like she is a great mom, a loving soul and just all around caring and willing to give her all to everyone. She loved Dean so much! Cassius was what she needed when he opened up and gave love a chance.

Rob and Tasha was weirdos. I wanna know the ‘we’ she mentioned before she died. She deserved to die honestly. Ayden was very much a psycho, like she really needed help. How you gave up three kids for adoption and wanna pin this one on a man so he can take care of you. Whew chile, she thought he was about to wife her fr.

Anyway this was a good story and I love how it unfolded.

My first read from Author Connie Easton and thank you for trusting me with this arc.
If you’ve read her Christmas novella Silent Night then you will know who Cass and Dylan are but you don’t have to read that to read this novel once it drops.

When you first meet our MMC Cass Knight, handsome successful Psychologist with a past that deals with family heartache and trauma that still affects his daily life.. Now he’s gonna rub you the wrong way with his mean ignorant honest behind but I promise you if you stick beside him you will fall in love with him.

Our FMC Dylan is also in the career field as Cass and had a traumatic child hood, remember the movie Precious that’s who the type of mama she had in my eyes! Just trash but my girl had a soft spot for her mama even though she didn’t deserve any bit of it!. She is also single mother of the most precious 3 year old boy Dean. Through everything she went through I felt nothing but pure love radiate given from Dylan jump off the pages!

The first few encounters between the two wasn’t the best because our boy was a jerk! Lol. Once they do hit it off Cass only has eyes for Dylan. He also creates the sweetest bond with her son Dean.

To see a man not feel worthy of love and have that woman lift you up and show you, you are! Ughhh I absolutely loved it! Dylan melted all the Ice around Cass’s heart and Cass giving Dylan that feeling of protection and security. 💕

You will get a bit of drama, some family secrets and a whole lot of spice! The journey to healing and finding that love you felt you were not worthy but realizing you are worthy of it all!

Cass: “ Thank you mama, he leaned over and whispered in my ear.. Dylan: For what baby?.. Cass: “ Allowing me to surrender to love, your love! “.

This book came highly recommended across several of the book clubs I am part of. This is definitely a must read. Enemies to lovers type story with a twist. Two psychologist trying to fight their own demons. Very powerful story. We all have battles that we fight alone until that loved one appears and helps us win the battle. I love Dylan & Cass. I loved that neither one was scared to show emotion. Excellent character development. Definitely recommended. I have read a few books by Connie. After reading this, I need to go through her catalogue. I hope we can read about X finding love in the future 😊

Absolutely loved it

OMG Connie Easton you never disappoint this book was so good. Cass and Dylan both had childhood traumas that damaged them and shaped how they moved certain ways in life. Those two meeting and getting together was exactly what they both needed and deserved the way they rode for, protected and loved each other was amazing. I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a good read!!!

⭐️⭐️

This is a new to me author.

While I rated the overall story 2 stars, I have to say it’s more about the story and less about the writing. As a therapist, I found the depiction of my profession to be ethically unsafe. It’s NEVER EVER okay to sleep with you clients. And all of the drama that unfolded is a pretty good reason why.

That reason alone it was a no for me regarding the MMC and my feelings never changed.

The dynamics surrounding the FMC were too ridiculous. But it was entertaining. Had neither of these very deeply unhealthy characters worked in other profession, my views may have differed about the overall story.

But you add the profession and the toxicity. It’s a NO.

Everybody got on my nerves at one point 😂

This book here definitely turned me every way but loose!!! I don't think I've ever highlighted so much 😂 from the beginning until about70% in I absolutely loved Cass and Dylan... I loved how Cass was open about the situation with Ayden and loved even more when Dylan said despite that she would still be down for her man! I loved how they created safe spaces within each other to try and navigate through their trama. My heart was aching for Cass because he was really going through it. Now after 70% I'm what happened but all of a sudden they both became entitled, mean, and annoying to me! One minute Dylan was down for cass , the next it was leave me alone, then she down again, then I don't want to share the title with her, deal with it and get back with me (deal with it how girl?) Then it was girl you ain't family and won't ever be, then it was help her and be nice to her... I was exhausted!!! I was starting to question their credibility as psychiatrists because they were childish like when they found out about Ayden and Cass wanted to call and taunt her?? Knowing she has mental issues! They just acted like all of this wasn't Cass' fault for going there in the first place! As exhausted as I was I was glad how their story ended!! Would love to here X story!!

Emotional Rollercoaster

Ethical violations aside (because I saw a few reasons to snatch Cass’s license), this was a great read. The level of heartache and pain that Cass and Dylan had to endure was tremendous. It was interesting to see how both chose to cope with their trauma. Dylan poured herself into helping others and shutdown the possibly love, while still enabling her abuser. Cass shut everyone out and kept a tough exterior, while drowning on the inside. When the two met I was ready for a showdown because Cass’s mouth was reckless. I was a little out off by Dylan’s forwardness after how he treated her, regardless of her finding out some of his issues, but overtime I got over it. Cass’s dad and Dylan’s parents were just trash. I was also upset with how hard Cass was on X. I get why he was angry, but he had to realize that they were both young and grieving. He was upset with how his brother chose to grieve, yet he was drinking and being extra careless with women until Dylan came around. Anyway, I’m glad that by the end they seemed to make up.

Now I feel like I deserve a story on X and this Noel that was briefly mentioned. Hahaha

If you haven’t read Silent Knight then please do, so you can get to know Cass. I was so excited that he has his own book. But in the beginning I didn’t like him he was this rude disrespectful a**hole with reason. I do admire the fact that Dylan was going for it with him. Those tables turned quick when we figured him out (no spoilers). I like that both have the same occupation I found that really cool. Although Dylan wasn’t taking no ish from Cassius her egg donor for some reason walked all over her. Tasha I can’t even find the words for her one off the top my head is she’s grimy. I mean she should’ve cut her off a long time ago. I noticed a trait that Dylan and Cass share they don’t like to be alone and have abandonment issues. When these two finally decided to coexist their chemistry became explosive. The way he became stepdaddy for Dean and loved Dylan I couldn’t stop blushing. I’m happy these two found each other even if they started on the wrong foot. This standalone was chef’s kiss.

When You're Therapist, Even Though You Need A Therapy!!

I thought Cass was bipolar in the beginning of the book. He loves his mama, but treated women heaux for his sexual pleasure. Cass problem with Ayden is he kept having sex with her. And she made it more than it was. She was definitely delusional, she wanted a family. Cass need X, but he was unavailable, and an a**. He came at Dylan all wrong, projecting his father less problems on her. He called the hot line just to talk to her. Dylan biggest problem is her mammy. She has the love of her family besides trying to find father. Not knowing that he is working for her. Her problem is she took her mammy's feelings and took out on him and not listening to him. Cass was trying to do right by Ayden by buying the rest of the things for the baby. Taz and Des were hilarious. Phantom and Leila are the best friends to have. They have their complete family.

Love through adversity!

Cassius Knight and Dylan Cambridge' s first meeting wasn't sunshine and roses..neither was their 2nd meeting. But something about Dylan's soft nurturing nature pulled a hard shelled Cassius in like no other woman had. Cassius's emotionally unavailability wasn't enough to stop Dylan from seeing more of the sweet man that he actually was. Both have deep childhood traumas and a need for family. Dealing with past issues make these two stronger (kinda) and rely on each other. HEA.
Pros: Found family,
Cons: even though they BOTH are in the psychology field, neither of them got/ received the help they needed. And is he gonna tell Dylan what happened to Tasha?!! Lordy! That's her mama!!!

Cass + Dylan

I am not really sure how to rate this book…

What I liked:

The story in general.
I loved that they found each other after their hurtful past.
Their friends/family really showed up for them, in the best way possible.
There was so much drama – good drama!
The names.
The way they loved each other.

What I didn’t like:

The HIPPA violations were so unrealistic and unprofessional.
The way that Dylan accepted Cass’s baggage but then would say don’t call me until you get your baggage handled – gaslighting.
The unaliving was unbelievable and weird.
Cass’s assistant… she was strange.
There were a lot of missed opportunities with the storyline.

This was good but...

I enjoyed this book and its definitely worth the 4 ⭐. But for the first half of the book it felt like I should have read something before this one. There was a lot of information about side characters that I felt came from somewhere else and made the story seem I was missing something.

But I did love Cass and Dylan's love story! The way they loved each other through the pain of their past was beautiful. Even though the scene where she came to his office seems like it came out of left field, I still enjoyed their story. This was my first book by this author and I plan to read more to see how I like the rest of her catalog.

Mmmm….The Main Characters were a mess!

This book needed to be thought out a little more. I actually liked the premise of the story but it kind of didn’t fit the main characters because the way they cried and acted out through this book, they couldn’t have been psychiatrists!!!! Whose trauma were they helping because even Cass was having relations with the patients and staff! Then Dylan! OMG she was annoying! The trauma was real with her and her folks! Not sure how she made it to become a Therapist seeing as though she needed one herself! Chile help the people in this book! I couldn’t deal! Barely made it without skipping pages!

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It had all the aspects of a great romance book, I laughed I got pissed off and there was still some unaliving which I appreciated. Connie is one of my auto buy authors so this fit right in with her style. Cass was so damn reckless with his mouth but when he met his girl he was cotton Candy soft ok? He was a killer but man he was a crybaby it was sweet and annoying at the same time. Because we don’t deal with toxic masculinity over here but at the same time sir enough already lol

This was a crazy ride. Cass and Dylan went through so much ish it was mind boggling. Once one thing cleared here comes another. I loved Cass, from the very beginning. Yeah he was a hard shell but I could tell it was for good reason. Dylan melted that ice right off him and I loved how he admitted his wrongs and did everything to make it right. He stood for his woman and made she only those who truly mattered got her love and energy and u loved how Dylan helped that man heal in spite of everyone's judgment and antics about him. This was really great. I loved it.

Really????

Cass was a whore!!! He was unprofessional, mean and ignorant. In addition, I was very disappointed with how Dylan was often described. Cass constantly referred to her as chubby. Even calling her hands chubby. I thought it was in very poor taste. Then on top of that, for Dylan and Cass to both be therapist, they were extremely in need of counseling themselves. I questioned if their love is even real. It definitely came across as they connected over shared childhood trauma.

I knew you wasn't ready when I met ya (It shows up and disappears)
You say you gon' leave, but I won't sweat ya (en made up, plenty times I swear, I could've gave up (It ranges from making love to tears)
Plenty times, inside I'm hurt, but play tough (Now we're here, love is weird)

Crying to nobody else
I ain't got nobody help
I feel like I'm by myself
Freeze my heart or it's gon' melt
All the things that I been through

I was on a RIDE, with this read and LOVED it!

Cass was a handful but both Cass and Dylan needed each other!

The amount of turmoil both of them faced was enough to break anyone but both of them being therapist helped put words and action to find comfort and resolutions to the troubles they faced.

Grumpy ain’t the word for Cass, he was “Disrespectful” to everyone

Dylan’s mom will forever reserve a seat on my S*it list.

The ending was so Cass😂

Cass: Surrender to Love

I enjoy Connie Easton’s books, but this one was just okay to me. Not only did Cassius disrespect Dylan and practically every woman in the book, but SHE chased him down after that. Then I didn’t like how she blamed her father for her mother’s actions. In no way should he have to be held accountable for her mother’s, a very capable adult, disgustingly poor choices.

Great book

This book was so good from the beginning to the end. I could not put it down. Cass was such ahole on the beginning of the book but my girl Dylan stepped right in a tamed that wild man. Cass just needed some love and consistence in his life. Cass did not play about my girl either. Dylan mom was worth nothing how could you do that to your child just horrible. I did not like Ayden she tried to pin that baby on my boy but he knew it wasn’t his baby. Great job Connie.

To fully surrender

Cass finally understood the assignment!!! Yes, he was wrong in the one particular situation he was caught in, but i think it helped him see that he was ready for parenthood. Now Dylan, the one to swear off men bc of her past...who would have thought she would choose the community peen typa guy 🤣 They were wat each other needed to level up in life...both now open and honestly loving themselves, able to face past demons head on...ni dats love 😍

such a beautiful and complex love story

Cass and Dylan story was very complex but beautiful at the same time. Cass was the definition of a mean ass man because he was wild. I love the fact that she went in detail about Cass trauma and how lonely he was before he meet Dylan. I really like how open and honest he was with her about everything in his life. I like Dylan as the female main character especially the relationship with her son.
