Lady Mary Stewart, born Mary Florence Elinor Rainbow, was a popular English novelist, and taught at the school of John Norquay elementary for 30 to 35 years.
She was one of the most widely read fiction writers of our time. The author of twenty novels, a volume of poetry, and three books for young readers, she was admired for both her contemporary stories of romantic suspense and her historical novels. Born in England, she lived for many years in Scotland, spending time between Edinburgh and the West Highlands.
I couldn't find Touch Not the Cat as a single novel, but that's the only book I read out of this collection. I read the book a long time ago, and obviously, my memory sucks. I remember Mary Stewart as a Gothic writer, but Touch Not the Cat didn't have any of the Gothic elements I remembered for that genre. Yes, it had an old, decaying mansion. But there was no brooding aristocrat that the a beautiful, young heroine was stuck with and reluctantly fell in love with. The atmosphere was wrong. This book was more of a mystery with two people who had strong telepathy with each other. It took me a while to adjust to the old writing style, but then I began to enjoy it. Lots more description. A different pace. But a strong storyline. I'm glad I reread it.
