A killer haunts Prophet, and this time it’s personal
The discovery of a body at the Thompson Cabins sets off a chain of events that hits too close to home for Sheriff Gabriel Thompson. When his brother Sam becomes a prime suspect in the murder investigation, Gabriel is forced to keep secrets from Tiber and call in outside help as he fights to prove Sam’s innocence. It’s a nightmare that becomes all consuming.
Tiber Russo, animal whisperer, is dealing with problems of his own. A stalker threatens him and his entire menagerie of pets. With Gabriel wrapped up in the new case, Tiber tries to solve the mystery on his own. Who in the sleepy town of Prophet wants to do him harm? But when the threats turn lethal, Tiber finds himself in over his head.
Tiber and Gabriel have solved two murders together and started a deep relationship. But this time the forces ranged against them are personal and the target is on them and on the backs of everyone they love. With each of them isolated trying to protect the other, their strength is diminished. Even with the love they share, can they make it out of this alive?

As an addicted reader of such, she is tinkled pink when an author manages to combine literary merit, vast stores of humor, melting hotness and eye-dabbing sweetness into one story. She promises to strive to achieve most of that most of the time. She currently lives on a farm in Pennsylvania with her husband, three bulldogs, three cows and six chickens. I thought this was a great conclusion to the series. At least I'm assuming it's the last book. I wouldn't mind reading more about these characters, though. 😊
The mystery is really good. I was super invested in the storyline from the beginning, even though
Throughout these three books, I've really grown fond of the characters. I love Tiber and his animals so much. His relationship with Gabriel is so sweet and tender. I only wish we got more on page time with them together.
The side characters are lovely, too. My favorites are Stone, his conversations with Tiber are the best, Devin and Rick. Rick pleasantly surprised me and I appreciate what the authors did with his character.
Tiber and Gabriel made great strides in book 2, but here? I wanted to shake them both. Tiber did not do right by himself, Gabe, or his pack by not sharing information with Gabe (if not as his partner, than as the town sheriff).
How could he not tell Gabe that someone tried to kill their dogs?? Poor Ferd ended up on an IV at the vet's, and Tiber's all, Um, He ate something he shouldn't have. Yeah, POISON ffs, and you're "handling it" on your own by running around like a crazy person with Duke (not that it was Duke's fault - Duke is the BEST boy!).
That's not to say Gabe was blameless. What's with being all weird and secretive? It made no sense that Gabe was planning to move in with Tiber permanently yet didn't trust Tiber enough to discuss the case or share his doubts and fears.
This frustrated me SO MUCH, I wanted to scream. Using no/miscommunication as a plot device is amateur hour. I did not expect that here (and blame RJ Scott because that is not Eli's schtick).
I kind of guessed where the mystery was going and don't think there was enough focus on the actual murder. Poor guy lost his life as an accessory in some fucked up game of revenge.
Plus, let's face it: Gabe had no business investigating that murder at all, and Sam should have been arrested. I don't understand why he wasn't? He was the only suspect.
I didn't like how much Gabe beat himself up for "not being there for his FaMiLy." The same family who emotionally abused him for being gay? Sam was an adult when Gabe left and never stood up for Gabe. He turned their younger brother against Gabe and kept blaming Gabe for everything.
What part of "undercover investigation" did Sam not understand? It was Sam's responsibility to support his kids and run the business he chose to keep. I was annoyed with Sam and Lori for treating Gabe like shit for so long and didn't feel much sympathy for them here.
I still enjoyed this story though. The pacing was excellent. I was glued to my Kindle. My heart was in my throat when Frank went missing! Frank cuddling into Tiber and moving his little feet about broke me. And that epilogue ... perfection.
I can forgive a lot when a book includes animals as MCs. Everyone in the pack (Duke, Ferdinand, Gracie, Leo, Fudge, Patch, and Frank) has a distinct personality. I liked them more than I liked the human MCs lol.
Book 2 was my favorite, and I would definitely read another book featuring these MCs.
P.S. My friend Jen's review reminded me that in the second book Gabe's niblings turned 6 on October 6: "It's the twins' sixth birthday. Sam's twins. Well, and Lori's. Obviously."
But then a couple paragraphs later: "Going to a party with four-year-olds? Me?"
A few pages after that: "By the time we reached the decorated front door with two sixth birthday banners, I was smiling" and "The good room as my dad used to call it - all set up for a sixth birthday."
Of course in this book, the twins are 4 and in preschool.
Talk about an editing and continuity fail.
I've gone back and forth, but I'm rounding my rating down to 3 stars because this kind of thing is well and truly unacceptable in a published work you're selling for five bucks.
Zenith is book three (and final???) book in The Lake Prophet Mystery. Although I did enjoy the story, it was probably my least favorite of the trilogy. I just felt like Tiber and Gabriel didn’t have enough time as a couple, they almost lived separate lives. So many times I was saying “talk to him and tell him what’s going on” to both of them.
The mystery part was interesting, although I figure out who was behind the murder and other happenings. The healing of the brother’s relationship between Sam and Gabriel was sweet and we did learn more about their childhood.
I’m hoping this isn’t the final book because I do love Tiber and Gabriel and their sweet relationship. Of course, I can’t get enough of their pack, especially Duke
In a way I felt that Eli and RJ had raised the bar pretty high for themselves with the past books (at least in my eyes). I thought that the conclusion of the series would, at most, equal the mix of sweetness and exciting moments from the past books. I didn't think they could top the bar, but they did. And honestly, I'm impressed by the fact that they did top the bar. It was wonderfully written (I've read most if not all of their books and honestly "wonderfully written" is kind of the standard). The mystery was set in such a way that I couldn't infer whom might be behind it until the characters them could, and then I was looking back like "how come I didn't see it? It makes so much sense!". And yet between the tension of who is behind it all we get to see a couple who really love each other and are doing their best to be the support their significant other needs in a time of stress, even though they're both under stress. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it.
With a litte more communication between the MC's the mystery had been solved a lot earlier. But then we wouldn't have had this book. Love Tiber's animals btw, they are the best. 3.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I still had hope in this series but it got worse. This was pretty awful. There was no communication in this book and the things that were happening to Tiber needed to be reported to the authorities. The authorities being his live in boyfriend and he told him NOTHING. And then Gabriel completely shutting Tiber out for this investigation was such a switch from the first two and really, it didn't make any sense. It was his family. Why wouldn't he share that with his partner?
It doesn't stop there though. Gabriel's involvement in this investigation, where his brother is the main suspect is well, suspect. The fact that Sam was never even arrested just made no sense. Tiber out investigating, again, but this time without any communication with anyone, stupid.
I don't know. The more I think about the series as a whole, maybe it just wasn't good. In retrospect the fact that Tiber doesn't communicate with Gabriel isn't new. It seems really, they don't communicate much at all. I'm realizing maybe there just wasn't any chemistry and since I was focusing on the mysteries I accepted it. But, by the third book, there needed to be something and I'm realizing there just wasn't anything.
The editing issues continued. There is a period missing from the fist sentence of the blurb for God's sake! But even worse, in this book, Sam's kids went from six in the last book to being four in this one. I hope whoever did the editing or proofing for this series was not paid for their work because they did not do their job. I'm someone who can normally look over an error or two but these three books were just riddled with errors and they were all in your face.
Zenith is the third book in Eli Easton and R.J. Scott’s fabulous Lake Prophet Mystery series and I absolutely loved it. The books feature Sheriff Gabriel Thompson and his partner, animal behavioralist Tiber Russo. While each book has a discrete mystery and you could probably read this one on its own, it is much better to start at the beginning for the context of their relationship and the various folks in the town (also be aware that this book makes brief mention of the killers in the first two books, so this story will spoil the earlier ones). The authors do such an amazing job here in this third book, not just with the mystery, but pulling together the personal side of things for Tiber and Gabriel.
I've skimmed this one, had reservations but wanted to finish the trilogy. I loved the idea of the series but the execution was wanting.
Their love had been tested - um, if this was a test they failed! No communication to a point that didn't make sense, with love should come trust, respect, working together. Not hiding major events that mean harm/danger to you or loved ones. If your boyfriend is the law, so you don't report threats not to worry him, then there's big issues. Threaten my furry baby and I'll go to war, not hush it up. And some of his automatic behaviour was... I don't think these authors get being vegetarian.
Then Gabriel investigating despite his brother being main suspect- wtf?! The whole procedure and lack of distance there buggered belief.
And the dark secrets of Gabriel's past revealed. Yeah, he's right to hate himself. I don't like him either. His behaviour was nasty, 'undercover' a magic justification. Worse his behaviour at the end, obsessing about the beautiful Tiber too the deficit of seeing the damage he caused .
There's a weird Native/hair fetish going on. Tiber is forced to cut his beautiful hair - well not really but they ignored other options for the dramatic trauma of it Uh-huh.
The Shamen was interesting. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Native cop have a spinoff series.
Dreadful. A series I read more for what it could have been, first two ok but this one was better avoided. On the whole I think I'll avoid future collaborations, they're proving to have great premises but disappointing content.
At least I think it’s the end. Surely there can’t be any more murders in such a small town. I enjoyed how it worked out and brought closure to both Tiber and Gabriel. A bit slow to start, then it picked up and had a good ending.
This series was just not for me, but I’m glad others liked these books!
This one was especially bad for me for editing errors, continuity errors (Gabriel’s nibblings ages?!), and just meh writing.
This was essentially two different stories, Gabriel off on his own, and Tiber off on his own, doing their own things and being non-communicative idiots until everything connects to each other in the end.
The characters are cute, Tiber especially, and with some polishing I think these could’ve been decent books. Something was just heavily missing for me and this one was pretty absurd and didn’t have the self-awareness about it in my opinion.
Occasionally a series comes along that ticks every box, dots every i, crosses every t and is a wonderful surprise right from the start. For me this is one of those. It was such a pleasure to read and I enjoyed the whole thing so much. RJ and Eli really pulled it off. The story as a whole, had intriguing characters, romance, and mystery. The build-up and ongoing tension was page-turning.
Zenith is a story of secrets, shadows, and evil. Both Gabriel and Tiber were totally put through the ringer. I really enjoyed the investigation/mystery side of the book, the twists and turns of the story kept me reading until the end, trying to figure out who was involved in the crimes, and not knowing who could be trusted. I honestly did not work out who the villains were.
The guys couldn't be more suited, their romance was intense, so full of heart, and so beautiful. The chemistry between them, the connection they had, was so good. I swooned at the intensity of their love, and how they looked out for one another. Oh, the animals, can't forget the animals, they played a massive part in the story. This is another great adventure from this couple, with lots of twists and turns, and an edge of the seat read. An emotional thriller but not without romance and passion. The ending is beautiful 😍
Can't be read as a standalone. Books 1 and 2 of the series must be read first. Very highly recommended.
I received an ARC of this story, which in no way influenced my opinion.
I loved this story. I loved this trilogy and this last book was the best. There was so much action and it was funny and heartfelt. I think this is the last they are doing, but I must say that Eli and RJ write really well together. I would read another series by them.
I might have figured out what was going on before Gabriel, but my family wasn't involved. lol I will say I shouted a few times: TALK TO EACH OTHER! It totally worked though and kept the story moving. The best part? It has an epilogue. I LOVE an epilogue.
Watching the Sam and Gabriel relationship grow was so wonderful. I wish there were more Sam and Gabriel scenes in the book.
Tiber. What can I say about Tiber? Watching him interact with his animals is so awesome. I wish I could do what he does. He is exactly what Gabriel needs. The two are really perfect for each other.
This is a must-read. If you haven't read the others, go get them now and read all three!
I'm in two minds about this one. I enjoyed the first half - it's fast-paced and tense from the start with Gabriel finding out his brother is the prime suspect in a murder investigation, and Tiber being at the centre of some strange (and dangerous) events. But the momentum is lost in the second half and a deliberate lack of communication between the leads became increasingly frustrating.
At first, for Gabriel not to want to tell Tiber exactly what's going on makes some sense - he's overwhelmed by it and also concerned about the probable conflict of interest - and for Tiber not to tell Gabriel about the weirdness he's experienced (especially as he thinks he's probably making mountains out of molehills). But it was obvious there was going to be a connection between the two sides of the story (which the authors have seeded throughout the other books), and that if Tiber and Gabriel had actually communicated, they would have realised what it was a lot sooner. But then, of course, there wouldn't have been much of a story. (And I hate that - when it's clear that the author is deliberately stretching things out by not having characters actually talk to each other).
The relationship between Tiber and Gabriel isn't particularly convincing. They've been attracted to each other from the beginning but it wasn't until late in Equinox that they took things beyond friendship - but the romance isn't that well developed; in this book they're practically living together and are 'forever' in love (we're told) - but Tiber and his menagerie spend more time together on the page than Tiber and Gabriel do, and Tiber talks to his animals more than he does to the man (we're told) he loves.
There were some excellent bones here, and those are why this one gets the extra half star, but the "I can't tell him because he's got enough on his plate" thing really did drag down the second half of the book.
Gabriel and Tiber are once again in the midst of danger and this time it's personal. Someone is targeting Gabriel and Tiber, separately and equally. Both are trying to deal with it on their own and not discussing anything that's important. They're both trying to solve the mystery in order to protect each other. Their family, human and furry have a target on their backs and things get deadly very quickly. Thankfully they're able to resolve the situation but not before some tense and dangerous moments. The epilogue was beautiful.
You’re not paranoid if someone really is out to get you.
Wow! What an awesome conclusion to this series! I have loved reading Gabriel and Tiber’s books and am sad to see it end, but this finale was a doozy! It’s a bit scarier than the previous two books, and I wanted to shake both of them a few times and tell them just to talk to each other, but overall this was a stellar read. I’m hoping that the three books are released as a boxset in the near future (hint, hint!;) that I can buy.
Gabriel and Tiber were really tested this time. This suspenseful read was a fantastic ending for these two wonderful characters and their menagerie, I just loved all the animals (these a special place in Tartarus for people who hurt animals 😡). This was a phenomenal finale.
I think this is the finale of this series. It was action packed with a bit more mystery than usual. Everything came full circle. You always knew who the bad guys were and that there were 2 of them, but you didn’t know their identities or the whys. It’s easy to guess when Gabriel’s past starts getting revealed.
As always I like how the animals are integrated into the story, from Frank to Duke to Leo and the others…
I like the way Eli Easton writes.
Why not 5 stars you ask? Maybe bc I like more passion and emotional angst in my romance as a general rule. Good angst, not bad angst. And for sure these books focus less on the romance and more on the storyline and action.
Until it comes out that the main character is a huge jerk? And it's totally glossed over by everyone? Shit, I don't blame Joe wtf. He's young -- that's stated a couple of times--- and he thinks he's in a relationship with someone who loves him. Enough so that he was in love with Gabriel thinking it was reciprocated BECAUSE GABRIEL SAID HE LOVED HIM. All the while it was a lie and Gabriel was just playing a part because he was undercover.
It should just be a bigger deal that Gabriel broke a boy's heart and traumatized him in a way that he obviously never got over. Gabe's got nightmares about fire, but the emotional bit...well, he never feels bad about using Joe's feelings for his own purposes. That bit is barely touched on. Jerk.
It's so gross. The justification is a vague c!aim of "saving" people. But the amount of grossness I feel over what Gabriel did vs the very low key meh that the book characters feel is crazy to me.
So we're going to get all out of whack at Jess's gas lighting and feel sorry for Tiber. But when Tiber learns that Gabriel lied and put on a total act for what I think was years he feels sorry for...Gabriel?? Not Joe, who was used and emotionally manipulated and lied to JUST LIKE TIBER?? Get right tf out of here. Tiber has humongous trust issues, but Gabriel being able to fake out a young kid who was in love with him for years is TOTALLY FINE, sleeping with him the entire time. The physical part of being with Joe but not even liking him...that's not worth a second look of hmmm maybe if my boyfriend is such a good faker I should think about that??
It's just a really offputting character beat ugh.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I’m very much underwhelmed. I had really high hopes for this series… especially with how interesting the covers were (they were very much giving Dark vibes). BUT this fell flat. The series could’ve been longer. There were things that felt unexplained like Gabriel’s brother Ezra… he’s mentioned so many times yet we never actually meet him. The way the story built up to Gabriel’s past in LA only for it to be over just like that... idk it wasn’t what I’d hoped for. This series definitely had potential but sadly the authors just didn't hit it for me.
Also idk if it was just the versions I was reading or if others noticed it too but the twins were six years old in the second book and four years old in this one… also Tiber’s wolfhound was referred to as both Gypsy and Gracie???
Zenith is the third and, I believe, final book in the "The Lake Prophet Mysteries" series. This story must be read as the third book in the series, not as a stand-alone, although it does give more context to Gabriel's undercover work than the first two books combined.
This book starts off a while after the last book leaves off. Gabriel and Tiber are settling down and are more comfortable with each other and their relationship. Gabriel is basically living with Tiber and their pack. After solving the last murder, they are hoping for more time to get to know each other, but of course, there is another murder, and it hits closer to home than Gabriel would like. Everything points at Sam as the murderer, but Gabriel knows he is somehow being set up. He just has to find the piece of evidence to prove it. Meanwhile, Tiber is dealing with his own crisis and trying to keep it off Gabriel's radar and already full workload.
Tiber and Gabriel's relationship is the best thing about this series. Watching them get closer, decide to date, and get to know each other was my favourite part. We see more of Sam in this book and the briefest mention of Ezra twice. I was really hoping to see him and Gabriel interact. I do love how Tiber kind of adopted Gabriel's "niblings" and how happy they were to see him each time he was around them.
The ending of this book was absolutely perfect, and I wore a smile throughout the entire epilogue. The series was such a wild ride. There was so much drama to get to the ending, but it kept the book entertaining and kept me glued to it. I read this entire book in a single day.

I loved this story so much(and sorry it is the last book)but I admit to yelling at Tiber when he found the dead raccoon and the message left using its blood and he didn't tell Gabriel. Gabriel was just as bad until forced to tell Tiber after another terrible nightmare about the undercover job that led to the death of Joe and the guilt he still felt. Every time one of the pack was threatened or hurt I tensed up and feared that one of them would die and I was relieved every time they got through it. I was so glad that Gabriel was able to clear Sam but finding out who had set the fire and who was trying to hurt Tiber and the pack was sad but not shocking. The showdown at their house was so scary and I was on pins and needles until everyone was safe. The epilogue was so wonderful and I cried at the end. Very powerful stories.
Wow! This was a fantastic finish to a fabulous series that just got better and more intriguing with each book. I loved it! In this book, Tiber and Gabriel are personally involved in the mystery, and the suspense and intrigue are heightened even more than in the previous 2 books. The twists and turns that the story took kept me glued to the pages to make sure both men survived, and I loved that despite all the stress they are under, Tiber and Gabriel are able to support each other, and their love doesn’t falter. Both the MCs and the secondary characters are well-developed, as are the four-legged characters who, at times, stole the show. This is a fantastic mystery story, full of edge-of-your-seat intrigue, fear, emotion and heat, with a terrific epilogue that ends the series beautifully. This was a fabulous series, and I highly recommend it. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Incredible! I have absolutely loved this series, and while I'm so sad it's over, I know logically it means these characters get to live blissfully in their well-deserved HEA. More stories means putting them through more danger and heartache. Is it selfish to hope for a spin-off featuring Ezra?? And maybe then some check ins with everyone from these books?
Overall I have loved getting to know these amazing characters, investigating along with these intriguing mysteries, and visiting the atmospheric town of Lake Prophet. Highly recommend these books and definitely read them in order. You won't regret it!
I've really enjoyed the Lake Prophet series and watching the relationship between Tiber and Gabriel grow. All of the small-town charm is there as another murder hits the area, this time with Gabriel's brother as a prime suspect. As in the previous books, Tiber and Gabriel don't always do the best job of communicating, but their love stays strong as they sort through the threads of danger all around them. I was especially taken by "the pack" and Tiber's deep connection to all things related to animals. The HEA is just glorious. I'm not sure if there will be another book in this series, but I definitely have enjoyed my time spent in Lake Prophet, watching the various mysteries be solved.
Magnificent storytelling. I was drawn into the story from the very start and couldn’t put it down. The mystery/thriller aspect was well plotted out and it kept me guessing (wrongly I may add) and on edge throughout the book.
Gabriel and Tiber are a dream couple to read, their love is so bright and pure. You can’t help but love them and their little four legged family.
This is the third and final book in the Lake Prophet Mystery series and must be read in order. I highly recommend this book and the entire series.
Zenith is an excellent ending to what has been a fantastically written series. RJ and Eli have outdone themselves by bringing the final murder of the series right to the doorstep of the town sheriff, Gabriel, while simultaneously bringing an unknown entity to Tiber's, causing fear for himself and his pet family. The problem these two have this time is that, despite how close and in love they have become, they don't share these with each other in order to protect them but that may just prove the opposite. I have loved this series from the start. There is excellent character and relationship development as Tiber and Gabriel have met and grown closer across the series, coupling up and falling in love, as well as growing as people. Gabriel is working to fix his relationship with his brother and his family, whilst Tiber has gotten better at talking to more than just his animals. The fear this time is quite real when it comes to the unknown threats and the tension grows steadily throughout the book. You can't help but be drawn into the story, hoping to discover clues yourself, but also wanting everything to work out for our MC's and their loved ones. The plot has been well planned out and I really enjoyed how everything played out and unfolded towards the end. Heightened emotions stay through the last third of the book as events bring it all to a head. The local townspeople are a good mix of caring, nosy and helpful as well as those who just truly want to be there for their neighbours. The animal pack are just as amazing as always, with Duke and Leo really stepping up to help protect the family. Very deserving of all the extra treats! Highly recommended book and series. This one could probably be read alone but I think with the character connections, it would help to read the story in order. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
4 stars. Sweet, paranormal, slow burn story set in a small town with lots of pets. The pets are like actual characters in the book and add a warm coziness to this police/sheriff mystery. Actually, they’re more like family members, lol, and animal lovers will adore this book.
This is book 3 of a 3 book series and it’s the finale that wraps up all outstanding police/sheriff cases. There is light drama and light spice, investigation work is interesting, though not super exciting. Nicely written.
