4.75⭐ (book 32/25 - 2025)
This was a fun read. I didn't have any expectations going in, and I'm truly happy about that.
It's a silly little read— I recommend.

pre-read Since my niece has finished reading this and it needs to go back today (15/04), I thought I'd give it a read. Why not? :)

A colourful graphic novel about a chimp. Humans were worried that humans would not survive in space travel. So they sent a chimp into space. It worked out pretty well until the chimp made a mistake a pressed the red button.

The chimp was frozen and lost for 50 years. Then they met a space dog and a space cat. And the story got a bit more weird. As they were captured by space insects. And all chaos and fun follows. Chimp wants to go home.

Earth is the home for all of us who are born on this planet.

The end.

Chump the chimp from Central Park Zoo, New York, USA has been blasted into space! Humankind want to know how well he’ll do out in space as he travels round the Earth. When all goes well, Chump decides to have a celebratory banana, with disastrous results!

Earth can’t help him now as he wakes up 50 years in the future. Standing in front of him is a dog. He looks angry and claims to be a Hellhound of Space. Named Dimitri, he tells Chump he’s a notorious space pirate and is feared across galaxies. Chump being Chump just shrugs his shoulders, much to Dimitri’s disgust.

Dimitri was blasted into space many years before by humankind, but when he realised there were no plans to bring him home, he rebelled and stalked the galaxy attacking and taking ships to add to his own. Chump is his latest conquest, and soon to be one of his worst. Chump isn’t the brightest chimp in space, or on Earth, or even in the zoo he came from.

Chump’s next disaster takes Dimitri with him, until they are both captured by other space pirates. Their ship is incredibly unique, but the captain and crew are even more so. How will Chump and Dimitri ever escape these blood suckers?

A voice comes from deep space. A voice intending on rescue. But despite their emergency rescue title, there is no emergency speed in their rescue. Are they too to be added to Chump’s long line of disastrous events?

But just when Chump and his new space mates think something is finally going right, they find something very very wrong. A giant gerbil? What the heck? Can they work together this time to prevent a disaster of galactic proportions?

David Walliams is back, but this time it’s in full colour graphic novel format. Over the decades, countries around the world have blasted animals into space to help determine if it will be safe for humans to do so. There were fruit flies, a gerbil, dog, cat and more.

David Walliams has brought them all together in a funny, sometimes silly, but always entertaining tale of Chump the Chimp and his adventure in space.

Chump was one of the lucky ones, as Earth intended for him to return, but many others had no way home. This has built resentment and revenge in multiple mammals, but others have taken the opposite route – policing the galaxy. This mish-mash of good and bad intentions brings even more laughs among the stars.

There is action aplenty, as they surf asteroids, grapple with black holes, save a giant gerbil, not to mention Earth, all while having a great time. Chump is oblivious to the danger most of the time, but does save the day more than once.

A bright, fun, colourful read with an interesting afterword.

Madcap, makes little sense, space silliness.

Well, I did get to practice switching between a Russian, French and... er 'chimp' voice for this one!

My 7-year-old seemed entertained throughout, wanting more each evening, though I really felt the escalating absurdities as each emerged.

What can I say about the plot? At its heart, it's based on what 'might' (I use the word very lightly) happen if the first animals in space were frozen for hundreds of years, left up there, genetically altered. Making this the most madcap adventure of giant insects, space pirates and explosions you've ever seen. None of which make sense.

New characters are introduced every few pages, there's a lot going on with as many animals thrown in as possible. Chump doesn't really become the Space Chimp hero of the story as there are competing characters who take over a lot of the speaking.

It was interesting to see Walliams' style translated to a comic/graphic novel style. We lost lots of the 'lists' he seems to rely on, the changes in font and bottom burp jokes.

He managed to get a nod in to Roald Dahl at one point, which my boy took great delight in.

It all came together as a plot in the end, but it's hard work to read this sort of book aloud, best for readers who are at the stage when they can read it for themselves (and do internal European accents!).

So silly. One for ages 7-11.

‘Blast off with Chump, and encounter a pirate space-dog, a laser-blasting cat, some dastardly fruit flies, and the most ludicrous threat the world has ever faced in this wildly funny space opera fully illustrated in fantastic colour.

A COSMIC comic book adventure!’
This book was wonderful.
I am a massive fan of David Walliams’ books so as soon as I saw this book I knew I had to have it. To the point where I didn’t even bother reading the synopsis, I went into this book not knowing that it was a comic book and not a Middle-Grade novel. While I was confused when I started reading this book, I ended up loving it.
As this was maybe the first ever comic book I have ever read, it took me a chapter or two to get into the flow of the story but once I did I powered through the story. I was surprised by just how fully fleshed out the story was, I guess I thought it wouldn’t be as deep as a novel would be because of the comic book medium, so I was very pleased that I was wrong on that front.
David Walliams has done a fantastic job with this book. The story was fun and contained actual historical information for kids to learn about, without it being boring in any way. I also loved how the characters were all so different; this made it exciting to see them work and grow together over the course of the story.
As this is a comic book it is overflowing with bright, bold, and ultimately beautiful illustrations by Adam Stower. The combination of David Walliams’ writing and Adam Stower’s illustrations is always a treat to see, but in this book, the brilliance of their partnership was taken to a whole new level.
Astrochimp by David Walliams will take you on a journey that you won’t want to end.

Book 160 of 300 ~ 2024

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

A star just because it is by @dwalliams and that is a SIGNED COPY THAT I WON all thanks to @hweezbooks and @times.reads

The illustrations popped, and I loved how the characters are loosely based on animals that various countries from the USA to China had sent into space. There were some funny bits and a lot of nonsensical adventures, but I wouldn't expect anything less.

I would hope for the parents to introduce the stories of the actual animals who were sent into space to the kids to ignite their interest.

My favourite was the nod to the brilliant and also one of my favourite authors when a big peach is mentioned :)

I received a complimentary AUTOGRAPHED copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Fruit flies were the first creatures sent into space in 1947, on an American V-2 rocket — proving living things could survive in space 🤔

What then happened to the fruit flies, the stray dog sent by the Russians (who also sent two tortoises), the cat sent by the French. And the gerbil?!

With a Star Wars-worthy scrolling intro, David Walliams takes this hypothesis to a “space opera” graphic novel modelled after the first great ape sent to space in 1961.

Chump, a not-very-bright Chimp, is sent to space on behalf of humanity. Not too particular about which buttons he shouldn’t push nor his own survival, he encounters Dmitri the Dog Space Pirate, Bardot the catstronaut and possibly the very worst of villains — a ginormous, mutated queen fruit fly!

Don’t forget the tortoises, never forget the rickety, old, tortoises:

“We’re not deaf, dear?

“What did you say, dear?”

At one point, the motley gang spies what might look like a peach hurtling through space.

“A GIANT PEACH! That’s a whole different story by an infinitely more talented writer!”

What a fun, snot-filled, asteroid surfing adventure.

Chump the chimpanzee wasn’t the brightest animal at Central Park Zoo, which is why instead of hiding from the visiting NASA scientists, he waggled his bum at them. Then, he was blasted into orbit to test the viability of human space travel. What could possibly go wrong? Well, it turns out when Chump was involved, everything.

Frozen in space for fifty years he is woken up by rogue space pirate, Dmitri the dog, who is trying to steal his spaceship. Thanks to Chump’s blundering, they wind up together on a cosmic adventure involving Bardot the jet-packing cat, evil fruit flies and a gigantic object hurtling towards Earth.

This laugh-out-loud story features captivating characters, dad-joke dialogue and amusing asides, such as ‘Ten easy steps to turn a pineapple into a spaceship’.

Chump the chimp is a pretty clueless guy. He is a bit quirky and doesn’t really belong. That is, until he ends up as the first ape in space and his antics take him all across space meeting other ‘first in space’ animals.
.
It’s quirky, it’s fun, it’s funny. It’s a story of finding where you belong, while still being uniquely you. I love how history and facts about space are woven through in a fun way. I’ll admit that I learnt about all the different animals and insects (fruit fly anyone?) who have made the trip into space.
.
The perfect book for reluctant readers, those who love toilet humour, or those who are fans of space.
The standout is the incredible illustrations.

A funny and at the same time an educational children’s book where a chimpanzee called Chump is launched into space and we follow his adventures there with a space dog pirate and all the other animals.

I mean, I knew Laika beforehand, but never knew there were other animals as well. While this story was funny, after reading this I went to Wikipedia reading about animals sent into space. What a sad race we humans are. I understand why we did it, but it still feels horrible. I hope kids reading this will discuss about the subject with their parents (and I hope parents will read about it beforehand too) and hope they will be more aware of the animal rights.

But to the book itself: it really was funny and totally bananas and I loved the lively and colourful illustration.

3 stars (I liked it)

I think I like the concept of this better than the actual execution. It's fun to have all the animals/creatures that we have sent into space interact with one another. However, there is a little bit too much "let's kill ____" for a kids' graphic novel. The various fight scenes/the overall progression of the story feels like a little kid writing.

Humans have been blasting animals into space for experimental reasons since the 1940s, sometimes bringing them back and sometimes leaving them to see out the rest of their lives among the stars. David Williams's latest book, illustrated as always by Adam Stower, imagines a life for these animals that were either abandoned or lost in space.

Astrochimp begins with Chump the chimpanzee being sent off to space where his actions cause the hatch of the spaceship to be opened, leading to Chump being frozen in space for the next fifty years, when he is "rescued" by Dmitri, a dog space pirate. From there, things just get crazier, with evil giant fruit flies in a giant pineapple, a cool cat, a very slow rescue service and a furry ball of destruction. And lots of snot.

While this is a funny story based on the sad reality of animals who had no say in what was done to them and probably spent the rest of their lives in petrified confusion, I feel like Astrochimp also serves to make kids think about the fate of these very animals the characters are based upon; my nine-year-old was certainly very interested in reading up more about them.

David Williams's storytelling genius and Adam Stower's vibrant artwork come together in perfect harmony to bring this hilarious tale to life. The humour will be appreciated by readers, particularly those in the target age range. There is also plenty of action, mystery and tension. We are already eagerly awaiting the next piece of work from this duo.

My son would like to know when the next book is coming out. He says he knows another book is coming out because page 218 and 219 are a big clue. "I Love this book, I just keep wanting to say chump instead of champ at the end of the book, which is quite annoying". (:
