She’s repairing her father’s damage from the Pirate Wars. He’s going to protect her at all costs. When a journey through the Haunted Island brings them face to face with their worst fears, will they survive?
With the most cruel and wicked Pirate Lord for a father, Lavender has never known a quiet life. She has lost people she loved, and participated in crimes she regrets. With guilt weighing on her shoulders, she scours through the Haunted Island with an elite team to retrieve every last treasure her father hid, and reprimand any remaining pirate supporters. But ghosts of her past are coming back to haunt her, including a brother she believed to be dead. He has left breadcrumbs for her to follow, and Lavender and her team find themselves in the middle of a dangerous witch hunt. Sanity seems to be slipping through Lavender’s fingers until her protector, Gale, becomes a close friend… or maybe more. But Lavender knows her time is short, and she's already sworn off all relationships. Can she pay for the wrongs her family committed before time runs out, or will she die trying?
Ready to prove himself, Gale Torven is eager to help Captain Lavender on her quest. As someone who feels constantly invisible, he knows this will be his chance to make a difference. His one job is to protect Lavender and he intends to do that… even if it means protecting her heart. When another young man in the group constantly vies for her attention, Gale realizes there’s more to his own protectiveness than he thought. But Lavender doesn’t seem to notice him. Is Gale’s fate to always be invisible? Or, perhaps, he was wrong all along, and Lavender does return his feelings?
“Haunted at Twilight” is a retelling of “Hansel and Gretel” and is the seventh book in the Incandescent Kingdoms series. Each book can be read in order or as a standalone. This novel–complete with tropes of a love triangle, sworn off relationship, “everyone can see it,” broken characters, and redemption–is a clean/no-spice and swoony romance, perfect for young adult and adult readers!
I loved this Halloween-themed fairy tale retelling!!!!!!!!! Lavender definitely deserved to get her own book, and it did NOT disappoint!!!!!!! I also loved meeting her brother! The story was great, the romance was perfect, the setting... was so aesthetic, AND I got to see some of my favorite characters again. I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I received an advance copy of this book. A positive review was not required. My opinions are my own.
An amazing pirate island adventure with romance and magic, Haunted at Twilight is such an absorbing and exciting read! I have not had the chance to read the entire Incandescent Kingdoms books, but this can definitely be read as a standalone. I loved Lavender’s growth over this story! She had so much guilt and ghosts from her past that clung to her. Her work to retrieve the treasure her father hid and repremind pirate supporters was a way to make up for her past life as a pirate When her brother, who she believed to be dead, seems to be leaving breadcrumbs to follow, she cannot help but look for him. Now in the midst of a witch hunt, she and her team find danger at every turn. Her protector Gale could be a close friend, or maybe more. However, Lavender knows her time is short and she has already sworn off all relationships. Her past was very difficult and it shaped her views about herself and her abilities. I loved seeing her growth and how she found strength to move past the ghosts. She was such a capable character and so different from me, which was fun to read! Gale was so earnest! I loved his thoughtfulness and his strong sense of duty. He was there to protect Lavender and was ready to do so, even protecting her heart. When another young man goes for her attention, he realizes that he may feel more than protectiveness. He knew what it was to feel invisible, which is a very relatable trait. It was lovely to see him find confidence and to see the value in the right things. Gale had to realize what he truly wanted. I loved how they supported and grew alongside one another. They were searching the island and it was full of mysteries and surprises. I was on the edge of my seat as they followed the trails. It is an exciting adventure with some fantasy violence and some scenes that could be more frightening. The romance is sweet with only kissing. There are some mentions of war and the effects of it as well.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
I really enjoyed this retelling of Hansel and Gretel! The setting is an island and they aren’t children but young adults now. In this retelling they were raised by pirates and knew only the pirate way of life. Both knew plants and how to make potions and excelled at that in helping their father exert control over his crew by making potions.
Later on Lavender returns to the island with others to try and recover the loot and valuables her father and the other pirates stole from the kingdoms and give back to their rightful owners. She is filled with regret for her part in what she did when she was younger and when an individual treats her with kindness she doesn’t know how to respond because of her own self loathing. They meet up with others on the island who were also members of her father’s crew who had returned to the island and now are searching for members of their own group who are now missing. Later on they find them but they seem to be under a strange spell and a strange presence seems to have settled all over the island. Lavender makes some shocking discoveries and endures a bitter betrayal but in the end she and her brother are able to help and assist her friends to defeat their common enemies!
This is a really great story which I enthusiastically recommend to one and all especially if you love fairy tales and remember these tales from when you read them or they were read to you when you were younger.
One is never too old to not gain wisdom and insight from fairy tales! They hold as much truth and wisdom now as they did when we were young and the world needs the concepts of honestly, bravery, goodness, steadfastness, courage and tenacity probably more so now than ever before that are contained within their pages!
I urge you to reread these fairy tales with a more open mind and look at what truths are in the stories besides the entertainment value contained within. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised and pleased at what you discover!
Haunted at Twilight is a suspenseful retelling of Hansel and Gretel, absolutely matching the spookiness of the original.
There is a lot to say about this book because there really is a lot going on. The main aspects for me are the adventure part, the romance and the character growth, so I will try to say a bit about each.
The adventure is done really well. We’re sucked into the mysterious story from the beginning. There are unexplainable fogs, people that went missing and a dark secret that seems to haunt the whole Island. The creepy atmosphere and the feeling that there’s always someone or something dangerous waiting for the MCs kept me on edge and I thought the setting was absolutely fitting for this surprising mix between a haunted fairytale forest and a terrifying Pirate story.
The character development gets a lot of room in this story too. On the one hand we have Lavender who can’t forgive herself for her part in the Pirate Wars. She struggles with self loathing and with her past in general and she is still full of anger when she thinks and talks about it, especially about her father. I think her redemption arc is the most interesting, because even though her goal is to right her fathers and her own wrongs, she learns that your past doesn’t have to define you, that you can choose to be and do good no matter the past and that you’ll always stay bitter and resentful if you don’t learn to forgive.
Gale also learns a lot about himself and his motives in life. He sees that he is just as important as everyone else, that he can make an impact and most importantly that being admired isn’t worth anything if you aren’t loved. But I have to admit that he felt so invisible and wanted so desperately to go down in history for his actions on this mission to begin with felt a bit strange. Gale was my favorite character. Everything he said and did didn’t really fit with this insecure guy who had such a shallow goal in life - to be famous. So for me personally his growth didn’t really feel authentic. He was a great, brave, honest, humble and selfless guy from the beginning and his repeating thoughts about how invisible he is seemed unnecessary and a bit whiny to me.
The romance between Lavender and Gale began really great. Okay, it didn’t really begin first, because Lavender is so cold and dismissive and Gale only sees her as his job. But I think in about the first half of the book it was great how they very slowly started to trust and respect each other, living through several dangerous adventures together. They not only protected each other, saved each other’s lives but started to open up, confide in each other and the bond that was forming was tangible. How they went from this sweet connection to a love of my life situation was actually a bit too quick for me. But I am a bit picky with that. I just love slow burn and I’m always disappointed when the first kiss happens before 75% into the book, no matter how well it’s done. So the beginning of the romance was perfect, for me it should have stayed at the same pace. But that’s personal taste and of course as I said in the beginning, there’s already so much going on under 300 pages, there probably wasn’t much room left for my kind of really really slow burn romance. I still loved them as a couple and could totally see them together.
Haunted at Twilight is a standalone in a series and the only one of the Incandescent Kingdom stories I’ve read so far, but I assume it’s best to read the other ones too. There were a lot of names and background information that was a bit confusing and sometimes even distracting at first because I couldn’t place the characters and I think it would have been more fun reading about the side characters if I had already read their stories. I plan to read through the series in the right order. Without really knowing, my guess is that this series is enjoyed best this way. But you can totally read Haunted at Twilight if you haven’t read the other retellings. I just had the impression I was missing a few details because I didn’t know the backstory.
If you like fairytale retellings and a mysterious atmosphere with great characters on a path of self discovery, this book is a great pick!
* Thank you to the author for letting me read an advanced copy of this book. I leave this review voluntarily and the expressed opinions are my own.
– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone
– this is told from Lavender & Gale’s points of view
– it is mentioned that (in the past) Lavender’s father (a dreaded pirate) used violence to get her to cooperate & would allow others to use Lavender (unwanted kisses & touches, not shown or described further)
Review:
I’m really glad to see that both Lavender & Gale got their own story! I’ve been following along in the series and wanted to know more about both of them!
I really liked getting to know Lavender and what the Pirate Wars did to shape her to be the person she is in this book. I loved that she had a bunch of people to look to for help/guidance over the course of this adventure. She would hold her past over herself constantly, and her core group was really good and catching on to that and trying to help her get out of that mindset. I loved that Gale, though confident in his abilities, wasn’t boastful about anything. He was quietly mindful of everything going on around him and the fact that there might be something else going on in the various situations surrounding him. I loved that Gale was especially mindful of Lavender as her bodyguard and later as her friend. He did as she asked without question and wouldn’t push her boundaries, even when it was something he wanted to talk to her about.
I also really enjoyed how the Hansel & Gretel tale was woven into this story! I loved seeing the different parts that I recognized formed into something completely new between the characters involved and the change in scenery.
Summary:
Lavender was used as a tool by the dreaded Pirate Lord Altun, but no longer. With his death, Lavender is determined to see the remaining pirates captured and tried for their crimes during the war. And with her crew from various kingdoms, Lavender will also scour the Haunted Island for all the treasure stolen from the Incandescent Kingdoms to be returned to their rightful owners. But things don’t go as planned. With the treasure no longer where Lavender thought it was, she needs to follow the breadcrumbs her brother left her. And with mysterious happenings around every corner, Lavender isn’t sure how successful her endeavor will be. Especially since her attention has strayed to her missing brother and her competent bodyguard…
Gale joined the expedition to make a name for himself that isn’t dependent on his brothers. Going down in history as someone who helped return all that was stolen in the Pirate Wars would be a massively positive change to being invisible. But nothing is as expected. Upon entering the island, Gale is immediately demoted to laborer by Captain Lavender because she doesn’t think she needs a bodyguard. When the island proves again and again that Lavender does need protecting though, Gale is ready. Along the way, he comes to realize that his need to protect Lavender is so much more than the job he’d been hired for. But with closing herself off, would Lavender ever be open to more?
I loved this epic retelling of Hansel and Gretel! It was so unique, while completely encompassing the well known story. I cannot believe how she wove everything into this read! Pirates, Princesses, and a Witch! Book 7 from the Incandescent Kingdoms that you won’t want to miss!
Lavender has endured so much in her lifetime. With a father as a Pirate and after many many things happened it is now up to her to rid the Incandescent Kingdom of Pirates for good. Back to the Haunted Island Lavender is the only one that can find the stolen riches from each kingdom and where the last pirates could be. This Quest may test her very limits and she faces many hard truths and luckily her hardened heart warms.
Gale has always been shy and overlooked. He has the opportunity to have his name written down in History books and doesn’t know how much this quest will change him. Lavender is so used to fending for herself that when Gale is tasked as her body guard she won’t allow it, he soon proves how much she needs him. I lost count on the number of times Gale saved Lavender in this book! He is the perfect Gentleman and Lavender begins to see what a great man he is.

My favorite part was the Guitar Lessons. 🫠 Favorite Quote: “you are my favorite pirate.”
This story kept me captivated and so many twists and turns had me at the edge of my seat. So much happens and I loved how everything turned out. Learning ones own worth and learning to trust your heart made this a spectacular read.
I love how different this book is from the other books in the Incandescent Kingdom series.
It was a little bit darker, and the FMC was a little bit more morally grey than the others. Not that Lavender wasn't one of the good guys (girls), but she had a past of being on the wrong side of the law, growing up in a family of pirates. She's an interesting character. She struggles with feelings of guilt. But she's strong, fierce, brave and smart. And sometimes she's a little bit annoying (for her surroundings) and stubborn.
Then we have Gale, while he's an excellent hunter and bodyguard, he's also a bit shy and timid. He feels invisible and would like to be remembered for something great. He's also protective and a gentleman.
Lavender and Gale's chemistry feels a bit like enemies-to-lovers. At first, they don't really like each other. But that changes when they get to know each other better. I loved their interactions and chemistry.
The world-building in the story is bewitching 😉, and brilliant. It's also a little bit darker and a little creepy, and it fits perfectly with a Hansel & Gretel retelling.
I loved the little details that were added to the story that referred to the original story. The rest of this story is truly unique and creative, and I definitely love this version a lot more than the original.
If you are looking for an adventurous story filled with pirates, magic, redemption and romance, then check this story out!

I received an e-arc from the author, but this hasn't influenced my review!
Haunted at Twilight, by Leialoha Humpheries, is book seven in the interconnected standalone series, The Incandescent Kingdoms, and a retelling of Hansel and Gretel. It was the first Incandescent Kingdoms book I read, yet (as expected) I was able to easily pick up on the world and overarching plot elements.
There’s a lot to like about this book. For me, my favorite part was the magic system. I really like that it involved potions and I thought Lavender’s explanation of how there are only a few “true” magic wielders was quite interesting. I also liked that the setting was spooky but not scary (meaning it’s creepy for the characters but won’t scare the reader).
The relationship between Lavender and Gale was cute and well-developed. There is a minor love triangle in Haunted at Twilight, but I think even those of you who hate love triangles will be all right with this one (it’s more of a moving-on love triangle instead of a ‘Who will I choose? I’m in love with them both!’ love triangle).
I think the only thing for me is that while Haunted at Twilight is a retelling of Hansel and Gretel, it didn’t really feel like a retelling until the final third(?) of the book. Now, to be fair, I think that this makes sense, considering how little there is to work with in the original fairy tale. And I do think that the key elements of Hansel and Gretel were well-incorporated. However, when I was reading, I actually forgot it was meant to be a retelling at one point and just felt like I was reading a pirate/treasure hunting novel (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This is more of a heads-up than an actual complaint).
Thank you so much, Leialoha Humpheries, for providing me with a free ARC of Haunted at Twilight in exchange for an honest review.
Haunted at Twilight was an enjoyable read. It was a unique Hansel and Gretel retelling full of eerie suspenseful adventure and pirates. The author did an excellent job of portraying the creepiness and haunting feeling of Twilight Island, it was so easy to envision as I read the book. Not only was Haunted at Twilight suspenseful, it was also a wonderful story of redemption. Lavender is full of self loathing for the wrongs she has done. Furthermore, she is also haunted by the past. I love her journey of learning to forgive herself for her mistakes and letting go of the past. Gale was my favorite character. He often felt lonely and invisible compared to others. I loved his journey is seeing that he mattered and not invisible to others. They were able to the best of each other. The romance is clean with only kissing. Highly recommend giving this book a read!
I received an ARC copy of the book and all thoughts are my own.
Leialoha Humpherys weaves a captivating tale of redemption, adventure, and romance in "Haunted at Twilight," a retelling of the classic fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel." Set on a haunted island, the story follows Lavender and Gale as they confront their pasts and navigate a treacherous journey filled with danger and betrayal.
The narrative shines with its unique setting and refreshing take on familiar characters. Lavender, raised by pirates and burdened with guilt for her past actions, embarks on a quest to right her father's wrongs. Alongside her protector, Gale, she faces ghosts from her past, including her long-lost brother and the cruel legacy of her pirate father.
Humpherys skillfully explores themes of self-loathing, forgiveness, and the power of redemption. Lavender's journey of self-discovery is poignant and relatable, as she grapples with her own inner demons and learns to let go of the past. Meanwhile, Gale, who has always felt invisible compared to his siblings, finds purpose and validation in protecting Lavender, ultimately discovering his own worth in the process.
The supporting cast of characters, including new characters such as Lavender’s brother Ace and familiar faces from previous Incandescent Kingdom stories, adds depth and intrigue to the narrative. I eagerly anticipate reading Ace’s story in "A Beautiful Hope" and continuing to explore the richly imagined world of the Incandescent Kingdoms series.
The story's seamless blend of adventure, magic, and romance keeps readers engaged from start to finish. Humpherys' writing is fluid and effortless, making it difficult to put the book down. From swashbuckling pirate escapades to heartwarming moments of connection, "Haunted at Twilight" offers something for everyone.
Overall, "Haunted at Twilight" is a spellbinding tale that breathes new life into the classic fairy tale of "Hansel and Gretel." With its compelling characters, intricate plot, and immersive world-building, this book is sure to delight fans of fantasy and romance alike. Whether you're a newcomer to the Incandescent Kingdoms series or a returning reader, this enchanting story is not to be missed.
Disclosure: I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of "Haunted at Twilight" from the author. However, my review is voluntary and reflects my honest opinion of the book.
This was a light, easy read. The world building was fascinating! Some of the characters had dark pasts and dark experiences, so it is better to say that the writing style was light and easy, rather than the plot. Leialoha Humphreys handled the abuse, manipulation, and villainy of pirates very tactfully. It shows how evil and cruel they can be without going into detail.
I loved the fact that Gale and Lavender didn't give up; no matter what obstacles they faced. To wake up every day determined to do your best takes a great deal of courage and determination.
The romance was sweet and clean (and adorably awkward at times...).
I did struggle with the writing style, but that is purely a personal opinion. I am not often fond of first person narratives.
I received this as an arc copy, all my opinions and sentiments are my own.
Not your typical Hansel and Gretel retelling. Things you can expect from a fairy tale retelling by Leialoha Humpherys: - Clean sweet romance - A thoroughly enjoyable story - Well developed characters - Wanting to rush to the end and not wanting the story to be over This was not what I was expecting for a Hansel and Gretel retelling but it was wonderful and entertaining. I'm glad Lavender and Gale each finally got their own story. Who doesn't love the quiet stoic brother who can't miss a shot? Or the daughter of the pirate lord that turned against her father? This is a story of learning you are more than your past and that seeing yourself for who you truly are and able to become. Thank you to Leialoha for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this story! I loved it and will definitely recommend it to all fairy tale retelling fans!
Humpherys pulls you into her Incandescent Kingdom world right away; Lavender is fighting against her past and anticipating further fights in her future, never dreaming that she might be accepted for who she is, instead of instant rejection for who and what she represents.
I found the story entertaining and very creative in location, atmosphere, and the accompanying magic system. Lots of double-crossing (hey, we are talking about pirates, after all) and second-guessing, but if you know the story of Hansel and Gretel, you know that it all eventually ends well. So it is with Haunted at Twilight - we are treated to many (mis-)adventures along the way and some sweet, tender romance that is kept very clean (thank you!).
Again, I was not disappointed! I was really looking forward to Lavender’s story when she was first introduced and I was happy when she got paired up with Gale, because I also liked him as a character in the previous books. He felt so serious and reassured in those books that it was quite nice to read about his thoughts and have his own story! Lavender and Gale deserved it, definitely!
My favourite character is not a surprise: Ace. I loved reading about Lavender’s mysterious brother and I can’t wait to read his story next!!
This book has everything I loved. Magic, haunted Island, betrayal, pirates, mystery and romance!! I loved it!!
It was also nice to see other characters from previous books revisit here!!
The character development in Leialoha's books are always phenomenal, and this one was no exception! Lavender struggles with guilt. Gale toes the line between desiring affection/justification rightly and prioritizing that above everything which warps that right desire. They were both very human characters
The biggest issue I had with this book was its predictability. This wouldn't bother me as much if I was looking for a light, fun read, which is what most fairy tales are, but Leialoha's books are usually more meaningful. She succeeds with the characters and their struggles, but sometimes I feel the plot isn't as developed as it could be.
Overall, another nice addition to the series and I'm looking forward to reading the next installment!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Loved this! I have read several of the Incandescent Kingdom stories and have been delighted by all of them, including Haunted at Twilight. The MCs are so complex and interesting, and while the story is a sweet romance, there are lots of magic and adventure to be had. The author's unique take on cultures and incorporating them into her unique fairytale retellings makes for excellent reading! I received this story as an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book was so good! It has adventure, pirates, magic, betrayal, and romance! It is so well written, it flowed to make it an effortless read that I couldn’t put down! All of the characters were so well thought out and interesting. It was also great to see some familiar faces mixed in this story. It was a great adventure from start to finish! I loved it.
I was blessed and given this story as an ARC and this is my honest review.
I haven't read many Hansel and Gretel retellings (I think just one other!) but I LOVED this one! I felt like it was very cleverly done, how he left a breadcrumb trail for her to follow to solve the mystery. And any book with pirates and a bodyguard romance will always hook me as a reader! Mix that together with Leialoha's sweet writing style, and it was a winner of a book! Great cinnamon roll guy and a morally grey girl! Well done!
Hansel and Gretel isn't a fairy tale that gets retold very often so it was great to see how Leialoha interwove some of the key elements from the original story into the haunted setting of Twilight.
Lavender was full of self-loathing and wanting to make up for her past so she kept her walls up and kept people at arm's length. Through her interactions with Gale and Ace, she comes to realise she doesn't have to let her present be ruled by her past and she can choose to do things differently and let the past go.
Gale has always felt invisible compared to his amazing siblings. He goes on the expedition in hopes of finally being seen by everyone. Lavender is the person to finally make him feel important and valued and through his time with her, he comes to realise that what's most important to him.
I loved seeing the development of previous characters since we last saw them in their own stories and what has happened in the different kingdoms. One of my favourite moments in this book was meeting Ace and seeing what a ray of sunshine he was. I'm looking forward to seeing his story.
Another spectacular clean pirate fantasy romance! I can trust this author to write good literature with a great balance of good & bad, and with well rounded, complex characters! Many life lessons learned with a focus on forgiveness and the importance of family. I loved it!
I really loved reading this wonderful book! I loved the characters and the plot! I had a hard time putting this really wonderful book down! I absolutely loved this retelling of Hansel and Gretel! I really loved reading all of the books in this really wonderful series!
An interesting take on Hansel and Gretel with pirates, reunited siblings, a witch, and a bodyguard romance! Truly the best retelling of the classic Grimm Fairytale!
