A serial killer, a woman on the run, and an obsessive parole officer tangle in a psychological net of death and secrets. . .
Four years ago, Kerry Grey was arrested as an accomplice to her serial killer husband Lucas when a severed finger was found in her car. Kerry had no idea that her missing husband was responsible for the brutal slayings of three young woman. Now, out on parole, she is ready to start anew and reunite with her young son. But when a vigilante group inflamed by fear and motivated by reward money, sparks a fevered hunt for Lucas, the nightmares of her past return.
Only one person helps Kerry evade the hysteria of the media—her parole officer, Adam Nash. Can she trust Nash to help her? What she doesn’t know is that Nash recently moved to this backwoods town of Joy, Montana, to secretly fulfill his own obsessive ambition: solving the Hatchet Killer mystery and bringing her husband to justice.
Kerry’s new life turns dark when she discovers that Lucas has been secretly giving their son carvings made of bone. And when a freshly dismembered victim is uncovered in the forest, the law is after her. Kerry escapes up a mountainous trail to find Lucas and, one way or another, to end this nightmare.
In a final twist of lies and betrayal Kerry finds Lucas … and the truth that will change everything.
Susan Furlong grew up in North Dakota where she spent long winters at her local library scouring the shelves for mysteries to read. Now, she lives in Illinois with her husband and children and writes mysteries of all types. She has over a dozen published novels and her work has earned a spot in the New York Times list of top crime fiction books of the year. When not writing, she volunteers at her church and spends time hiking and fishing.
Fully disclosure - I was tempted to read The Killer's Wife by Susan Furlong solely based on the cabin tucked away in the dark woods pictured on the cover. I'm such a sucker for a good cover. Always. Once I started reading it, I was so glad I was sucked in by the cover! Wow. There were so many twists and turns throughout this book.
Four year ago a horrible crime took place in the small mountain resort town of Joy, Montana. A place where everyone knows everyone else's business. Kerry Gray is unfortunately married to the murder and she ends up going to prison for four years as his accomplice, while her husband is supposedly on the loose somewhere in the forest. There have been sightings, but he's never been caught. Adam Nash comes to town as a new Parole Officer and he just so happens to be a true crime fanatic, fully versed on the case. Suddenly the murders start up again. All signs point to Kerry. Can she prove her innocence? And exactly who is committing the new murders?
I was all set to rate this book 4 stars. I was able to guess a few of the twists. But the ending caused the rating to jump back up to 5 stars. I'm impressed with the overall pacing of the story, the characters jumped off the page at me, and that ending ... I really have nothing bad to say about this book. Now excuse me while I go look up some more books by Susan Furlong to lose myself in!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
It is easy for a great cover to lure me into grabbing a book and the title for The KIller’s Wife made me curious. Why would I care about her? I do watch a lot of true crime shows and The Killer’s Wife has ‘show’ chapters that, to me, share a lot of the problems with the mishandling of the investigation into the serial killer, Lucas, and his wife who was accused of being an accessory, Kerry Grey.
I had all kinds of thoughts running through my mind, but Susan Furlong was not going to make this easy and nothing was as it seemed. I did have my suspicions early on and some of them came to fruition. Things seemed too cut and dried and we can’t have that. LOL In a small town, it is easy for the residents…and the police…to make the accused fit the facts.
I wondered about Nash. There was something off about him, but things with him didn’t play out the way I thought they would. I love it. Wyatt always seems to be hanging around and gives me the creeps. An old boyfriend hanging around while Kerry marries Lucas and has a child by him and after her serving four years in prison he still wants her? Could we label him obsessive?
How could Kerry Grey not know her husband was a serial killer? More than one wife, in real life, has been asked that very question. Their son is steadfast in his belief that his father is no killer. Could they have it wrong?
Kerry decides to find out the answers for herself. I knew it was coming, but the way things went down was not what I expected. Susan Furlong has a vivid imagination and she let it loose in The Killer’s Wife. I love endings that can earn that extra praise from me, that shock me, surprise me and make the familiar unfamiliar. Well done, Susan.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of The Killer’s Wife by Susan Furlong.
A serial killer, a woman on the run, and an obsessive parole officer tangle in a psychological net of death and secrets. . .
It’s no secret how much I love a psychological thriller, so I was excited to read The Killer's Wife - a new to me author, an intriguing synopsis, wrapped up in a creepy cover 🔥
This fabulous book grabbed my attention from the onset. Mother, Kerry Gray is being released from prison after being charged as an accomplice for her missing husbands murderous crimes. Kerry tries to navigate her new life outside prison as well as her relationships. Her ten-year-old son wants nothing to do with her, believing in his fathers innocence. Her newly appointed parole officer is weird and has his own issues. After specific items have been left behind for her son, Kerry goes on the hunt for husband to confront him for the years she’s missed out with her son and make him accountable for his actions.
This is a fast paced, cleverly crafted thriller that will have you furiously turning pages while twist after twist is revealed. There is a mixed bag of complex and dysfunctional characters, some I was rooting for, others were downright nasty! Told from Kerry’s and her parole officers POV with transcripts of a true crime show added as juicy tidbits. It all meshes together to create an intense and chilling thriller. I’m already looking towards Susan Furlong’s backlist 🤩
Solid 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Many thanks to @wbfrom @partnersincrime @startpublishing @seventhstbooks for an advanced e-arc and having me along on the tour 💌
Three women have been brutally murdered in the Joy, Montana area. The main suspect Lucas Yates has avoided capture for four years. His wife Kerry has just been released from prison after being charged as an accessory. She has returned to her home with her grandfather Callan & son Joey. Her goal is to serve her two year parole and then leave town to start over. The townspeople & the true crime groupies are obsessed with the case ( AND the reward money!)
The cast of characters includes Lucas, the suspected killer; Kerry, his wife and possible accomplice; Wyatt, a life-long friend; Adam, the ex-Chicago cop turned new parole officer in town; and Jack Foley , the sheriff. A tale of relationships, lies, secrets, passion, obsession, threats, and betrayal.
“The appeal of a good mystery is seeing how the clues come together, solving the puzzle, and serving justice.” But is real life ever truly this simple?

Susan Furlong, the Author of “The Killer’s Wife,” has written an edgy, intense, and chilling thriller. This book's genres are Psychological Thriller, Suspense, Mystery, and Fiction. The author vividly describes some horrific and disturbing crimes, and I was captivated by every word. Susan Furlong grabs the reader’s interest in the search for the murderer/s and the reasons why. This has all the feels of an Alfred Hitchcock movie, “Psycho.”
The author describes her dramatic characters as complex, complicated, dysfunctional, flawed, and suspicious. Some are either psychopathic or sociopathic. There are deep secrets, threats, danger, mutilation, and murder. There is at least one serial killer who is yet to be found. Kerry Grey is getting out of jail, is on parole, and has to meet her Parole Officer, Adam Nash. Kerry’s husband, Lucas, is suspected of being “The Hatchet Killer,” Kerry was arrested when a finger was found in her car. Kerry maintains her innocence, yet someone wants her to be held accountable for aiding her husband. Kerry also has missed raising her son for the last four years.
Kerry doesn’t know where Lucas is but discovers that Lucas has been leaving gifts for her son in a treehouse. Kerry is determined to find Lucas and find out the truth before other suspicious characters do. I promise you won’t want to put down this complicated and edgy psychological thriller. I highly recommend this novel.
I so love a good psychological thriller and if written well it can be one of those books you can't get enough of. Well, The Killer's Wife by Susan Furlong is just one of those authors that can hold the reader's attention.
In Joy, Montana, Kerry Gray was just released from a four-year prison term. She was charged with being an accomplice to her husband's crimes. He is at large yet, but when Kerry notices that her husband, Lucas has been giving her son carvings does she realize that they have been in touch. She desperately wants to make up top her sone for her absence. Kind of hard to do when the father is playing mind games.
Adam Nash, newly arrived in Joy as Kerry's Parole Officer, knows all about the case. He gets pretty involved in Kerry's life and wants what she does, to have her husband found and brought to justice.
Lots of twists and turns and trying to figure out who the bad guy is is what a good thriller is all about! I love the story as I do most of this genre, characters to love or hate, lots of them. I give this book 5 stars and if I could do more I would. This book kept me reading long into the night.
I received a copy of the book for review purposes only!
Looking for that perfect killer story this is it. It will keep you up into the hours of all night. Or deep into the day . This one has the perfect twist. Because just when you think you have it all figured out. Guess again.
Perfect, I must say, perfect psychological thriller. We all have a favorite book that we've read this year. And this one is mine... Just absolutely perfect.
There's a sereal killer on the loose, But who's being blamed, For the hatchet killings. Sometimes small towns have secrets. More than anyone knows. This book wow totally blew me away.. The author does an amazing job on storys
Kerry, Just wants a life for her and her son. After being released from prison. But so much has gone on so many murders. And everything looks like she's the guilty party but is she. Only one way to find out read this book. I guarantee you it will not be a disappointment.
The town has it out for Kerry, known as the hatcher killer.
This is an absolute must read. I absolutely love her last book.... Each book I tell you gets better and better.. I love this author's work.
If you’re looking for a creepy have a shiver work up your spine read, then this is your find. I didn’t know who I was supposed to like on the book because I really didn’t like any of them except maybe Callahan, Kerry’s grandpa. I suspected who the killer was faulty early on and was justified on my reckoning. Adam just gave me the creeps and I think he was cast in the movie Pyscho, especially with his attachment to his mother. I wasn’t surprised at his story. Creep galore slithers through this book.
Since I'm a sucker for incredible covers, I couldn't resist diving into "The Killer's Wife." This book is an exhilarating mix of intensity and edge that leaves you breathless.
From the start, I was hooked by the tantalizing dark secrets, vivid descriptions, and chilling crimes that unfold.
After missing out on four long years of her son's life, Kerry is determined to do whatever it takes to protect him—even if it means going up against his father. And the ending is a thrilling roller coaster of twists and turns you won't see coming!
The strength of this novel is the well developed plot centering on one woman's nightmare, being wrongly accused of a crime and not being able to prove her innocence. I like Kerry as a heroine. She is one determined woman as she fights being associated with the murderous acts of her husband. Her counterpoint, Adam her parole officer, is definitely a flawed individual. He has severe mother issues, hearing her voice long after she has died.
The plot was cunningly crafted. There is a twist in the second half of the book I did not see coming. Then there is another huge twist at the end that was shocking. There is a good measure of suspense included as Kerry tries to find her husband, something the inept sheriff's department has been unable to do. Including the cuts from the television murder program in the narrative was interesting but I felt it really did not add much to the progression of the plot.
This is a good mystery/thriller for readers who like to be confronted with serious twists and a surprise ending. I think this is the first novel I have read by Furlong and I will definitely be looking for more from her.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.
I picked this book up today at FanExpo where the author was gracious enough to sign it for me. I had never heard of her work before but when I read what this book was about I knew it was right up my alley.
This book was PHENOMENAL. I read most of it during the convention while my fiancé finished up his stuff and then finished it off in the car. I could not put it down! Twists and turns up until the very last page.
I’m so excited I not only discovered her, but got to meet her in person. A wonderful lady and I cannot wait to read more of her work!
I listened to this while at work and I riveted. Trying to figure out who done it, why, and the twist at the very end?? Left me speechless and had my co workers asking if I was alright. I gasped loudly and I swear my jaw was in my lap for a good minute. Highly recommended!
Fast-paced, with barely a chance to breathe, "The Killer's Wife" by Susan Furlong is a neck-snapping ride of suspense! When you least expect it, expect it. When you think you have it, you don't. Brilliant!
This was my first book by this author. Well written with just enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. I really enjoyed the ending. Kind of predictable yet still satisfying.
I really enjoyed this one. Amazing plot! Imagine being sent to prison when evidence is found in your car, but you’re innocent. Then you find out your husband is a serial killer and is missing. Loved the character development in this one and the suspense.
Ok. I was going to give this book a 4 star rating. It was good all the way through. But that kicker at the end that I didn't see coming bumped it up to a 5 stars! I will be reading more books by this author. If you are into serial killer thriller type books you will love it.
The writing is very gripping and lyrical. It’s written in first person and has alternating POV. I would say the book can be categorised in the tropes like serial killer on loose and character have hidden facades.
Lucas Yates was accused of murdering three women in the summer of 2014 and his wife Kerry Grey was sentenced six years prison for her involvement in her husband’s crimes . After four years, she was granted Parole. Present gets intertwined with past tangling Kerry into a dark web of suspicion and crime.
The murder cases are still unsolved, women bodies were brutally dismembered and the serial killer is on loose. The cruel twist of fate had changed Kerry’s destiny from Mrs Yates to Killer’s wife. While no one knows where is the Hatchet killer but Adam Nash, Parole Officer is trying to solve the mystery of the hatchet killer as it was his Mama’s dying wish. In the midst of investigation and how individual’s personal life has been affected, there are interviews at the end of each chapter through which we reach to the bottom of the mystery.
A dark, dramatic psychological thriller with a very surprising ending. On parole after serving four years of a six year sentence, all Kerry Grey wants is to be with her ten year old son and grandfather. Her husband, the perpetrator of the crimes she was convicted of helping with, is still on the loose. Going home to Joy, Montana won't be easy though as there is a group of amateur Hatchet Killer hunters and a parole officer who still hears his dead mother talking to him, hot on the killers tail. Knowing she'll never find peace at home as long as her husband is out there, Kerry decides she'll be the one to find him and make him pay for the years he caused her to miss with her son. From here the suspense and tension rises until the exhilarating climax and shocking conclusion.
This one had me on the edge of my seat rapidly turning the pages with the need to find the answers. Kerry and the rest of the cast of characters are a compelling and diverse group. The story unfolds in the first person narratives of Kerry and her PO, Adam Nash with transcripts of a true crime show that covered the case, between chapters. It all works perfectly to tell this engaging story that had me spellbound. I enjoyed the author's previous book and jumped at the chance to read this one and boy, I'm glad I did! It is released today and I highly recommend you add this to your TBR list.
Thank you to the author, Seventh Street Books and Wiley Saichek/Saichek Publicity for the gifted copy for me to read, review and enjoy.
I have been a fan of Susan Furlong since I read her first Bone Gap Travelers novel, and The Killer's Wife just confirms what a wonderful writer she is. A suspense filled, page turner the book grabbed my attention from the first page to the final word. Kerry Grey, is the wife of accused serial killer Lucas Yates, known as the Hatchet Killer, and has been recently released from a four year prison term. Adam Nash is the newly hired Parole Officer in Joy Montana. He and his late mother shared a passion for true crime, and had been extremely fascinated by the the Hatchet Killer. Nash is very excited that he was assigned to supervise Kerry Grey's parole. He believed it would lead him to finding Lucas Yates and finally solving the case that had plagued the community and generated nation-wide interest. And that's just the beginning. Hold onto your seat as Furlong takes the reader on a ride that has many twists and turns. It is a fast-paced story, exciting and the ending-let's just say it left me speechless.- no easy task. I highly recommend The Killer's Wife.
The Killer’s Wife by Susan Furlong is a psychological thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. I felt as if I was on a roller coaster waiting for the next unexpected twist or turn to pop up. I found it intriguing that there were three points of view into the mind of Kerry. Each having a different perspective. What a tangled web was woven as Kerry was granted parole, yet suspicion was always on the mind of her parole officer and others. Twists that I certainly didn’t see. Dark suspense, creepy and edgy.
I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it.
The Killer’s Wife by Susan Furlong is a psychological thriller you do not want to miss. This is a fast paced story that is told in dual point of views. The characters are well developed and intriguing that you will love……well maybe some of them!! Ms. Furlong takes you on a wild ride with many twist and turns that will make your head spin. Filled with betrayal and secrets, you will not be able to turn the pages fast enough to find out what is going to happen next. She keeps you guessing throughout but when you get to that last page, well you will not believe it!!! I had to go back and read it again and then pick my jaw up off the floor!! I cannot wait to read more from this author, she puts the beat in heartbeat!!

Wow! I picked this up at a convention from the author and did not know what to think, having never heard of Susan furlong before. This book drew me in! I saw a few of the twists coming, but it definitely did not take away from the story at all. Well paced, nice curveballs thrown, and highly enjoyable thriller that’s good through the last page!
