If Cloverfield and Silent Hill had a baby.

I am not a sci-fi horror fan, never have been, and never thought I would be. Skeptically, I picked this up as a recommendation, but straight away I was involved. The characters and their individual journeys are so intense you have to keep reading. The thought of being in this situation would make anyone sick to their stomach.

Cannot wait to read Book 2.

4.5 rounded up to 5.

Thank you so much to D.R. Kane for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

The Markers of Darkeness was a fun blend of horror, science fiction, and thriller! I was not expecting the fast-paced storytelling and the eerie dystopian future that I was immediately thrust into. Ken and Loki were my favorite parts. Their bond was so sweet, and I was constantly worried about their well-being the entire time. I also loved the conspiracy theories and incorporation of religion as a sort of doomsday hypothesis. The plot made you think, but not too much where your brain hurts and you feel super confused.

I had purchased a copy of ebook a while back after hearing such rave reviews, but it somehow got lost in my neverending TBR pile. The audiobook was very well done and I was finally able to read this one! I think I'll definitely reread in ebook form in the future.

If you love conspiracies, dystopian horror, and fast-paced plots, check out The Makers of Darkness!

I had a lot of fun with this read. The action starts right away and doesn’t let up!! This is an engaging mesh of cosmic and sci-fi horror. Lots of neat ideas and spooky creatures. I felt unsettled a couple times! Even with such a short read, I’m invested in the characters and their plights. I’m eager to read the sequel.

You know when a book really grabs you with it's characters and story themes, and then you near the end and you're thinking 'what a great book, this should be a whole series?' This is it, right here. A quick read with intensity and no filler, with characters you root for, and add a little cosmic horror, and demon specters bringing the apocalypse. What are you waiting for? Start this book!

The start of this book was captivating and my eyes were glued to the page. I couldn’t stop reading this book. I loved all the different POVs of the main characters. I went to bed feeling on edge and hoping I wouldn’t wake up to total darkness. I can’t wait to read the second book!

The absolute perfect book to kick off scary season! D.R. Kane's The Makers of Darkness is a thrilling post-apocalyptic story with hints of Aliens, Prometheus, and even Stephen King. This tale paints a terrifying picture of a world thrust into a dark chaos, the incessant risks from a menagerie of depraved threats, and the characters' daunting struggles for survival. The author's vivid writing and engaging characters make this a must-read for fans of the genre. I can't wait to read the next two books in this series!

If this wasn’t the first book by the author, I would give this a 1.

I personally don’t see a point in making this a series. None of the characters were interesting enough to have multiple books about, and that has a lot to do because it just jumps into the story. I was very intrigued at the beginning because the story starts with a bang, but that wore off very quickly.

An editor would have also helped in making this book flow a bit better.

I liked the multiple perspectives but I kept waiting for the moment that they all came together and at times hard to keep up with.

I thought it was creepy and solid. Definitely going to get book 2.

This was a fantastic listen! Initially, I was a bit skeptical as it’s not my usual genre, but as the plot unfolded, I found myself engrossed. Also, I’m a sucker for a good cover! The characters were authentic and the storyline was chilling . If you're a fan of science fiction, cosmic horror, and a bit of gore, this is a must-read!

D.R. Kane is a new author and definitely one to watch after this deeply unsettling and thrilling sci-fi-horror novel.

The Makers of Darkness reminded me, ever so slightly, of the movie Cloverfield...except after reading about these creatures, Cloverfield seems like a walk in the park.

While I would describe this as being at the slower end, pace-wise, it's certainly not devoid of action. There are several moments of adrenaline-pumping, breath-holding tension, and there are monsters galore! The entities are some of the most bizarre and unsettling descriptions I've read recently; my imagination went into hyperdrive trying to visualize the creatures and I'm just waiting for the nightmares to kick in.

The story is a fantastic and gruesome twist on alien invasion, and was a really enjoyable read. I'm looking forward to Book 2 in April!
