The Wallflower and the Running Back

Rate this book
I was supposed to be bumping shoulders with the best and brightest in chemistry at a London University. Instead, I’m bumping into the shoulder pads of Tiff U’s star football player. And I’m his tutor.

I’ve never had many friends. The only one I thought I could count on ended up stealing my scholarship—and then my boyfriend. Now, instead of spending my fall semester abroad, I’m stuck here in Iowa, with zero funds and even less hope that I’ll get to study abroad at all before I graduate this spring.

Even worse? My mentor asked me to take on the impossible—tutoring arrogant running back Logan Ford and helping him finally pass Chem 101. Apparently, the team needs him, and the governing board is cracking down on letting grades slide for athletes. Normally, I’m all for accountability. Except now getting him to pass is my problem. And everyone on campus is looking to me—Rachel Edwards, chemistry genius, bonafide introvert—to get it done.

I’m about to give up before I start. But then I get a crazy idea. What if I can get Logan to be my date for the winter science ball? The one where the honors students compete in a pool for massive cash for the one who lands the hottest hottie on campus. Tiff U athletes have their fun, and we have ours too. It just doesn’t get the same attention. Probably because nobody has ever walked into the ball with someone like Logan Ford.

Last year’s pool got all the way up to five grand, enough to pay for my semester abroad. But can I really land the running back? And if I ask him to pretend in exchange for passing his class, can I handle the way he looks at me, touches me, makes my insides incinerate like a chemical reaction?

And what happens if I forget that none of it is real?

The Wallflower And The Running Back was such a good read I've finished it in a matter of hours.

Logan Ford is a good football player, but this season he needs to pass all his classes to play. He needs a tutor, and he wants Rachel Edwards, the best in the science course.
Their story starts like this, not overdramatic but pleasant and steamy.

Logan and Rachel have the perfect chemistry, and once they got rid of their first, not too good, impression they build a fantastic relationship.
Rachel and Logan have good personalities, they are very sweet and smoldering when they are together. They support each other when they have to face some challenges, and they help one another to get out of their comfort zone in order to reach their goals.

Those who enjoy Ginger Scott writing, an opposites attract storyline, and college sports romance should give this novel a go.

I thought this was a good book and I liked the characters a lot. I thought it was refreshing, especially in a NA novel, to see them actually communicate with one another. But I'll also say that by the end of the book I was left only feeling slightly satisfied. There wasn't anything that completely drew me into the book or made it stand out for me. I enjoyed it, and I'll definitely be back to read more from the series, I just didn't love it.

Gorgeous, sexy read. One of my favourites of the year!

"I knew she'd make a difference. Instinct told me. But I also wonder if there was a part of me that wanted to reason to talk to her. We've never had the occasion."

When Logan Ford needs a chemistry tutor, unbeknownst to her, he specifically requests Rachel Edwards. They (literally) bumped into each other on the first day of freshman year, but up to now - their senior year - have never crossed paths. However, he's a popular football player and she's one of the brightest students in their year, so they're not unaware of the other.

"I'm always out of place. It's why I thrive on the edge, just out of the picture. It was nice to have you there with me."

Oof! The chemistry and attraction between Logan and Rachel was unreal! I loved how all of Rachel's preconceived ideas about Logan were smashed by the reality of him. He was so much more than some dumb jock. Rachel had suffered a major blow just before she was paired with Logan and he was a real balm to her self-esteem - the thrilling thing was that his desire for her was genuine. She was a major chemistry nerd and would have rather hidden in her dorm room and binged her favourite TV show rather than go a frat party, and I liked how Logan brought her out of herself.

"I don't think I've ever wanted to be so completely owned by someone in my life."

In turn, when Rachel got to know him, Logan showed her a side to himself that was smart and sensitive. He understood her and her insecurities so well. I thoroughly loved that there was no major bust up between them - purely because Logan refused to let her hide herself away and avoid hard conversations. I adored that they had each other's backs, truly valued each other's career aspirations, and the ending was one hundred percent swoonworthy! A first class romance!

Ginger Scott has never disappointed me and I swear that each of her books gets better than the last!

I was invested in this book from the start. Scott has relatable storytelling that wins me over every time. I am seriously on cloud nine every time I read one of her books because everything hits in all the right ways. The story is engaging and the plot is well-constructed.

I fell so hard for Rachel and Logan. Their personalities were well-developed and it was easy to slip into their shoes throughout the story. Logan was an absolute dreamboat. He was a gentleman and treated Rachel with such respect and kindness. I loved Rachel's character development and her journey through the betrayal she experienced at the start of the book. There were some fantastic secondary characters that I wish we got to see more of but were great additions to the story.

Rachel and Logan were so in sync. They complimented each other perfectly. Their chemistry was magnetic and felt so natural. I was Team Ragan from the start!

Overall, this was another outstanding college sports romance from Ginger Scott. She has got this genre down to a T and always impresses me with her quality stories. I am loving this series so much and I can't wait for book three!

The jock and the nerdy tutor. It's not the first time that I've read this trope, but this book took a refreshing spin and I loved it.

Logan needs to pass chemistry to stay on the football team and he's found himself the perfect tutor in the really smart (and really pretty) chemistry genius, Rachel Edwards. Rachel doesn't really want to tutor the arrogant running back, but after losing an overseas scholarship, her best friend and her boyfriend all in all swoop, she has an idea. If she can get Logan to take her to the science ball, she could win the dating pool for hottest date and win a huge sum of cash to help with that overseas dream. Plus, a little fake dating will show both of their ex's that they've moved on. It's a win-win, but soon it doesn't feel all that fake.

I love an arrogant alpha male, but what I love even more is an arrogant male who is really hiding some insecurities. That's Logan. He comes across as the cocky football player, the "dumb jock", but he's really a sensitive guy who hates the image that he's portraying. With Rachel being an introvert, Logan brings her out of her shell while Rachel sees the real Logan that everyone else seems to look over. I loved their connection and their chemistry (pun intended), and I loved watching them fall in love.

Another thing that I enjoyed about this story was that it didn't follow the typical storyline of the jock and the tutor. I kept expecting certain things to happen, because I've read this trope enough to know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised when this story just didn't go there. I was also a little surprised about the steam factor as this book is possibly the steamiest that I've read by this author. This book had me smiling so hard, just absolutely loving the romance, and my only complaint is that I was left still wanting more.

This book is such an engaging, clever, thoughtful and fun story!
The author flipped a few common tropes over and made them fresh, heartfelt and super swoony. And, it is probably the spiciest book I’ve read of her’s.
Rachel and Logan are opposites. The chemistry introvert and the outgoing football player. The tutor and the guy struggling academically. Common and enjoyable tropes,in this book the characters don’t fall into cliches or simple boxes. It’s unexpected and refreshing.
They both are undeniably endearing, adorable and surprisingly naughty in the best ways. Their chemistry is so delicious and outstanding.
I absolutely ADORE this story and characters. Every time an ex shows up or there’s a conflict I was not expecting how it would play out, that’s a huge plus. I love being pleasantly surprised.
The writing is sharp, emotional and entertaining.
The characters are amazing on their own and together they make butterfly inducing magic.
I absolutely adore Rachel and Logan, their interactions are so multifaceted. It is such a feel good book without being too “sweet” or formulaic. It’s smart and emotional.
If you love New Adult romance, if you want something swoony and spicy. If you want awesome characters that make you smile this is the book for you. I can’t praise it enough, it’s really special!

Initially I gave this 5 stars, and while I did really enjoy the book, my initial reaction was the fact that Because honestly, I was really worried about that part of the storyline. At one point, I almost put the book down because I was afraid it was going to go there and I just didn't have the heart to watch that happen to Logan. He was such a good guy and I just wanted all the good things for him.

I loved how this book ended up playing out. So often when you have a jock/tutor storyline, the jock doesn't take the tutoring seriously. But in this case, Logan has tried tutoring before and had no luck, so he asked for the big guns in Rachel. And he actually took tutoring seriously. He paid attention. He worked hard. He paid attention. I loved how that went against the grain of these types of stories.

I love Ginger Scott’s writing. She’s such an excellent storyteller. This is the first book I’ve read of hers in a long time and I’m kicking myself for not keeping up to date with her books! I read the blurb to this and knew I needed to read this.

What to Expect:

🏈 Opposite Attract
🏈 Football Romance
🏈 He Falls First
🏈 College Romance
🏈 Fake Relationship
🏈 The Jock
🏈 The Nerdy Tutor
🏈 Friends-to-Lovers
🏈 Sports Romance

Logan is an amazing football player, but he’s lacking in his chemistry class and he NEEDS to pass all his classes to play. He needs a tutor, and the only tutor he wants is Rachel… The best one around.

Rachel and Logan met on the first day of college but didn’t get to know each other until Logan asked her to be his tutor for chemistry. She’s going through a lot of heartache and hurt after being cheated and screwed over by her ex-boyfriend and d -best friend and roomie. When Logan asks her to tutor him, she’s reluctant to help. She doesn’t want to tutor some arrogant running back but after being screwed over she needs money and she has an idea. If she can get Logan to take her to the science ball, she could go win the dating pool for the hottest date and win a massive sum of money that she needs to help her with her overseas dream she has. However, the more time they spend together and the more they get to know each other, their feelings start to intensify and what started as a fake relationship grows into so much more.

I loved Rachel and Logan so much. Logan and his arrogance… Why do I like assholes so much? I feel like there is so much more to Logan than his arrogant side which made me love him even more. You can tell he struggles with some insecurities and this whole dumb jock act is just that an act… Logan brings out a different side of Rachel. She’s more outgoing and open with him and around him when normally she is very withdrawn and shy.

They were simply perfect together. I enjoyed this and highly recommend it! It was sweet, steamy and fun to read!

The Wallflower and the Running Back is book #2 of The Final Score series. I loved book #1 - The Tomboy and the Captain. I was excited for the next in the series and I was not disappointed. They are both complete stand-alone, NA, college sports romance.

Logan Ford is the popular Tiff University football running back. Last year's scandal involved the Tiff U basketball team. The professors were letting the grades slide for athletes. The crackdown has started. Logan is already repeating chemistry and now must pass to stay eligible to play. Enter science "genius" and academic "nerd" Rachel Edwards who is tasked to tutor Logan.

Everyone on campus is looking to me—Rachel Edwards, chemistry genius, bonafide introvert—to get it done.

Logan and Rachel are total opposites. Logan is outgoing and confident. Rachel is the wallflower. Preferring to stay on the outskirts of things. Their chemistry is palpable! Each one brings something that the other needs. When they come together, really come together, they are a perfect fit.

I loved their story right from the start! Rachel is such a nerdy science geek. She is focused and driven. She has some issues that come to the surface, and she crushes all of them! Logan was likeable from the start. His kindness and consideration just made him hotter! This may be an NA romance but don't let that fool you! There is some serious steam packed in this book! Like a 5-alarm fire has broken out! There are other issues going on in their story but you'll have to read to find out what they are!

I recommend The Wallflower and the Running Back! Next up: The Best Friend and The Shortstop!

Tropes:

Tutor/Athlete
Fake Dating
He falls first
Football Romance
Friends to Lovers

Ginger’s characters are absolutely everything you’d want in a collage romp! 💕

This absolutely beautiful, curvy, Chemistry major absolutely steals the entire focus of this one! 💖 Rachel is traumatized and jilted from not getting a scholarship she wanted thanks to her Ex and her Ex best friend at the start of the novel. Which ultimately their betrayal on several levels throws her for a loop academically and socially!

While Logan is bound and determined to not be a part of the previous grade scandal that their college is facing… however, he has a failed grade and in desperate need of a tutor. With little convincing the starting Running Back is able to nab the gorgeous strawberry blond as his Chemistry 101 tutor. 🥵

Rebuilding trust, a desire to incite a bit of jealousy from her ex and the enjoyment of each other’s company these two become interconnected. This one is hard to put down, the characters are dynamic, the issues are realistic and I look forward to more from the Final Score Series! 💕

This was a super cute read. Sure, it's as you expect: college football player meets smart wallflower-y type girl who tutors him. Sure, we've all read that story but this one successfully managed to make the story unique. This was uniquely Rachel and Ford's story and it was light yet not fluffy, it was smart and complex at times but read with ease, it was riveting and vivid. The characters were compelling and felt real, the story and world created felt real and were interesting. But for me, this story truly was about Rachel and Ford's relationship, their back-and-forth and their coming together and growing as individuals as they did so. For that reason, their story was truly sweet and compelling. And their HEA and the ending - OMG!!!! I loved the ending of this book so much, it was so perfect for them - like beyond perfect. So sweet and beautiful.

This was a first-time read of Ginger Scott for me and she is a wonderful writer! Her words flow so freely and you are entranced in the story without effort and before you know it you've blown through chapter after chapter without even knowing time has passed - that's how immersed in the story you become. And if you're into college sports romance, specifically a jock and smart girl type, I highly recommend this one.

“Our eyes meet. Everything else disappears. It's like this. Every. Single. Time. In him, I'm lost. Then I’m found.”

This book was so sweet, I absolutely loved it!! Rachel and Logan meet when Logan, who’s on the football team, needs a tutor to pass Chemistry. There is an instant attraction for both but with them each fresh of relationships that ended terribly, neither one of them is ready to jump into anything serious. What starts off as just a show to make their exes jealous, quickly turns into more and real feelings develop.

Read this book to find out if they can put their exes behind them and make their relationship last.

Thank you to Ginger Scott and Wordsmith Publicity for the ARC of this book.

Welcome back to TIFF University! Welcome back to football season as we continue the 'Final Score' series with Book 2, " The Wallflower and the Running Back" by Ginger Scott.

In Book 2, we follow students Rachel and Logan. Rachel has just caught her boyfriend and her best friend, and now to add to the stress and strain, she has been personally asked by the college to tutor a jock in his failing of Intro to Chemistry. But she doesn't know that the jock is the cute guy she saw freshman year who annoyingly kept calling her 'Shortcake'. So as she starts tutoring, she decides that maybe she can win a 'bet' to have the hottest guy on her arm for a Science Ball.

In typical author fashion, Ginger Scott creates wonderful characters and their back stories and lives that create connections and interactions to grab you and make you want to immerse yourself in her books. Add some funny banter, as well as great storylines, and a whole lot of sexual tension, along with opposite attraction and some fake dating, and Ginger Scott creates another 5 star college football romance.

A cute, funny and quick read sports/college romance with the tutor/athlete trope.
It was an easy read with likable characters even though it didn't go deeper or show us more than the surface. Good chemistry, banter, and romance.

Rachel Edwards, a brilliant but introverted chemistry student, faces a setback when she loses her scholarship. Stuck in Iowa, she's tasked with tutoring Logan Ford, Tiff U's star football player, who struggles in Chem 101. As a last resort to fund her dream of studying abroad, Rachel plans to bring Logan as her date to a high-stakes winter science ball. What starts as a strategic fake dating scheme quickly spirals into genuine attraction. This book wonderfully combines elements of romance, academia, and personal growth. The dynamic between the characters evolves beautifully, illustrating how opposites attract and the unexpected turns life can take. It's a captivating blend of emotional and intellectual challenges, making it a delightful read.

This has been a lovely, upbeat, warm-hearted read! Rachel and Logan are a delight. I am so happy to have been introduced to them. Their attraction to each other, seemingly opposites in interests and careers, is a true meeting of good hearts meant to be together. They understand and support each other in ways others could never do.
This book has been a little ray of sunshine that has brightened up my day. It is written with kindness at its heart, something which we just can't get enough exposure to in this tumultuous world in which we live. And the epilogue is gorgeous too! 😍 💖💖💖💖💖

This was just ok for me. I was expecting it to be a fake relationship story for some reason, but it wasn’t. There were definitely more spicy scenes than I expected, as well. I thought the characters were likable, though, and complemented each other well. Not one I would read again, but it was a nice light, fluffy read after finishing several thrillers

Note: This review is for an ARC provided by WordSmith Publicity and is my unbiased opinion.

I'm really loving this series of new adult sports romances from Ginger Scott. The Wallflower and the Running Back, the second in The Final Score series, was just as fun as the first book.

Rachel and Logan were characters who were easy to love. Rachel was a curvy science major who wanted to study abroad and do big things as a scientist. She was also nursing a broken heart. Logan was a college football player on the bubble who dreamt of going pro. One of the things standing in his way was his Chemistry grade and he knew the only person who could probably help him was Rachel. Rachel isn't exactly thrilled at being Logan's tutor, but she quickly finds out the benefits outweigh her concerns. The chemistry between Rachel and Logan was off the charts. They had a strong emotional connection that made their relationship even more passionate. I loved how working to improve Logan's grade brought them together and how everything played out from there on. Their romance was light, fun, and only a teeny bit dramatic at times.

Another fun thing about this book is while it is set at Tiff like The Tomboy and the Captain, it is about a different sport and has different characters. I adored Logan's teammates/roommates and Rachel's roommate. They were characters I would love to read about in books of their own. Rachel's brother is another person I adored and would like to read about. I even loved disliking Rachel's ex.

I know this is repeating what I said about the first book in this series, but I had such a good time reading The Wallflower and the Running Back. New adult sports romance is where Ginger Scott's writing shines the most for me and she scored a goal with this one. If you enjoy college sports romances, you won't want to miss this book. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

(Minor spoilers, idk read at your own risk)

Imagine you’re craving a burrito after a long day so you place an order, wait for a while, finally receive it, open the package and all you got is a plain wrap. Just the wrap itself.

This is how this book felt.

Fine, I might be a little dramatic, but I’m allowed to be sooo?? Move, okay thanks!

Quick one before we get started. What’s up with authors these days when it comes to writing? I’m losing it lol.

The author’s that need to write more, aren’t writing more and the author’s that don’t need to write more, are writing too much?? I’m so lost, this is funny but also frustrating.

Anyways.

This book felt like a dream scrunched up into a ball of nothing. It was too quick. Way too quick. And a hard finish. A real hard finish because it just got so odd after a certain period, let me debrief real quick. (I doubt this will be a long review, but then again, I surprise myself with how much I can write lol)

Starting off with the plot/tropes, I enjoyed that part.. somewhat? I love the tutor student trope because I just do okay, leave me alone. And that’s what enticed me into reading it. However, I felt let down because the trope was almost instantly forgotten like 30% into the book. It wasn’t implemented well with the book at all.

It was so rushed and grew so boring because the author just started splurging out random smut scenes that had no impact on the story. In fact, it felt like two different stories, two different main characters. Basically, there wasn’t a proper flow with the main characters growth.

Speaking of main characters, I found them kinda annoying. Okay, maybe a little more than kinda, because they were really annoying.

Rachel had personality in the beginning of the book (barely there, but it was there) and then all of a sudden, she completely lost the little personality. She made me laugh at how dumb one can be. She gets rage baited so easily, it’s genuinely so laughable. His ex (Logan’s) was stirring the pot just a bit, and you let the fool get to you? Don’t fall for it, you melon. My word. I’m dying. How could she fall for that? That’s not even the point, it was her response that made her sound like a dumbass.

Rachel’s a STEM babe. I’m sure she’d have a back bone being in a male dominated field, the smallest one at least. Yet, this one ain’t got nada. That’s fine, but it’s just, it doesn’t make sense for her like come on.

Also, an altercation with her ex bestie.. girl, you did not need to say anything, walk away. Be the bigger person, you just look like a right knob. Literally awful character portrayal from the author. She was basically a gimp.

Logan. This brudda. Lol. Plainer than an unseasoned chicken. Where is his personality? Where are the personalities at? Where? I’m looking and looking, I can’t find nothing. I have nothing to say because he was so boring.

Also, this guy doesn’t love her nor does she love him, they like the idea of being with each other, but they don’t know it and are confusing lust with love.

The writing was so off. It was stressing me out, it felt like a story telling rather than reading a story from a first person’s point of view. Oh God, it felt a bit like an exam specification. I wasn’t connecting emotionally or mentally with the characters or the book, and that’s why I wasn’t a big fan of it (clearly).

I think this book was just a mess after the 30-35% hit mark. Everything after was a hard read.

I’m starting to think authors just publish smut with no proper plot to get attention (money grab). They use these tropes as bait, but show something else entirely.

I’m just disappointed.

I need me some yearning. Maybe ya or a historical romance. I don’t know, I need a cleanse from this mess of a book.

(This is just my opinion, please don’t take it to heart)

I received a complimentary early release e-book prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I have not read this author in many, many years, but this book looked really fun, so I am so happy I got to read the early release arc of it. It is very much a tutor falling for her tutoree. It's also about the science nerd and the jock and very much opposites attract storyline.

If you are looking for a fake relationship/dating, then look elsewhere because these two are the real deal from day 1. They see someone really special in each other and they choose to explore that but it's not for any other than they like each other. Now there are by products of the dating like jealousy from their exes but it's not fake dating.

This is also a very centered on football sports romance. We do see quite a few football games throughout the book. In addition our science nerd, Rachel LOVES football as her family is definitely a football family.

Logan and Rachel met each other at the first day of college but don't get to know each other until Logan requests her as a tutor. She has just broken up/been cheated on by her ex and her ex-bestie and roomie, so she is a bit down on men. I loved that Logan tries to reassure her that he is nothing like that ex and he really isn't. Logan despite playing football is a really good guy (with bad taste in exes and bad grades in science), I loved that he does not do the whole on nightstand thing and he wants a solid relationship.

Rachel is this absolutely awesome character. She was done wrong by her ex-bestie ad roomie, and it blows her trust, but I liked how open her heart is and that she is willing to open her heart to Logan. I also love her morals and how she refuses to use Logan. She is a really above-board character and I loved that about her. She is honest and true and when times she could have made the wrong choice, her natural honesty was so awesome.

This was a total light read which made it such a fun book. It's the perfect summer pool read that will make you laugh, smile and sigh because Logan is that hot!!

Ginger Scott's "The Wallflower and the Running Back," the second book in the Final Score series, is a fun college sports romance that some of my favorite tropes, including opposites attract, fake dating, friends-to-lovers, and he falls first. The story follows Rachel and Logan, who, despite briefly meeting during their freshman year, only really get to know each other during their senior year. Rachel is still reeling from a painful breakup that involved her best friend betraying her by stealing her boyfriend and study abroad opportunity. To maintain his place on the team amidst the scrutiny on the athletics department following a grading scandal, Logan needs a chemistry tutor to help him pass his class. Logan remembers Rachel assisting other athletes in the past, so he requests her to tutor him in chemistry. As they spend more time together, they begin to feel a strong attraction and decide to fake date to make their exes jealous. However, their plan takes an unexpected turn as their fake relationship heats up and starts to feel real as their feelings for each other grow stronger.

I loved how Rachel grew from being an introvert to expressing her wants and needs and began to enjoy spending time with people outside of the chemistry building. Also Logan grew in self confidence as his grades in chemistry improved. I loved the side characters in the story. Claire, Rachel’s roommate and Jax, Will’s teammate and roommate were so fun and really supported them throughout the story. Will Rachel be able to open her heart to someone else after her trust was badly broken? Will Logan be able to convince her that they are the real deal while at the same time break out of “the bubble” and make an NFL roster next season? I recommend this story if you enjoy a sweet, steamy, fun YA sports novel with all the witty banter! I can’t wait to read more from Ginger Scott!

Thank you to Ginger Scott and Wordsmith Publicity for the e-book ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

First thought: This one took me by surprise! I loved the combo of the quiet STEM loving FMC who finds a new path and the hot football player MMC who needs her to make his dreams come true. You’ll fall in love with Rachel and Logan as we follow them through their senior year of college. Go add to the now.

Rachel first met Logan during freshman orientation when she walked into his muscles chest and he helped keep her upright. He had called her strawberry shortcake because of her strawberry blonde hair. She was instantly annoyed and he found her cute.

Fast forward to senior year Logan is the starting running back and on the radar for the NFL scouts. Only issue is he failed chemistry and due to a recent cheating scandal by the men’s basket team all athletes grades are under a microscope. So if he can’t pass this class his whole future is in jeopardy. He has tried tutors and they haven’t helped they give up on him. So he got the idea to ask specifically for Rachel, the adorable girl he met years ago who is literally a genius scientist.

Rachel just lost everything yesterday. She had applied to go to Germany this semester for a prestigious science program but she found out they went with another candidate. Then she found her boyfriend and best friend/roommate were hooking up. To make it worse the candidate the program went with was her best friend, so she not only stole her boyfriend but her dream! Now Rachel is being told she has to tutor some football player in chemistry as a favor to the school. Just great, senior year is off to the best start.

Check out this great book to see how this all unfolds!

The Wallflower and the Running Back is wicked adorable! This second in The Final Score series is sweet, witty and wildly steamy as Rachel Edwards and Logan Ford find themselves as tutor and football-playing student and in a very short time, oh so much more. Rachel lives up to her title as Wallflower since she'd rather be in her chem lab perfecting her hypothesis than attending campus parties and doing anything social. But when Logan handpicks her to be his tutor to pass his chem class, Rachel begins to see another side of the charming jock and her life changes in the very best of ways.

I loved Logan and the way he truly saw his 'Shortcake'. That besides being smart as a whip, Rachel is kind, and loyal and has this understated sexiness that he couldn't resist. Their playful banter becomes a bit of foreplay as they start to see each other in a whole new light with their study sessions a true highlight for both of their weeks.

The book progresses at a great pace, with thoughts of getting back at their exes and of winning a pool at a school dinner, falling by the wayside as Rachel and Logan's feelings for each other become very real. But the best part for me was watching Rachel shed her anti-social persona while at the same time watching Logan realize he's much more than just a great running back. They grew out of their comfort zones together, finding a forever love that made me swoon.

Ginger Scott will always be a go-to author for me and I have really enjoyed these lighter stories of hers. There are great side characters like Claire and Jax, who give support and good-natured ribbing, and I was glad they were there in crucial moments.

The Wallflower and the Running Back is joyful, funny and has the right amount of steam to make the book complete. This book was a very enjoyable reading experience and happily give it a big 4 stars!

The Wallflower and The Running Back is a delightful new sports romance from Ginger Scott. This is book two in the author’s Final Score series; each book in the series is a standalone story featuring college-age new adults. This book also takes place at Tiff University in Iowa, but it features a different sport and no overlapping characters.

I really enjoyed the main characters, Rachel and Logan. Rachel is a smart introvert who has recently had her heart broken; throughout she remains the ultimate heroine, making smart decisions and no mistakes. Logan is on their college’s football team, but his grade in chemistry might get him kicked off. It is a horrible pun to say, but Rachel and Logan’s chemistry is off the charts. I think the slow build of their relationship was perfect. I loved that Logan developed into someone more than his “dumb jock” stereotype. Several scenes became my favorites because of interaction with great secondary characters. Rachel’s brother, Casey, and her roommate, Claire, are fabulous characters, as is Logan’s teammate/roommate, Dante. They provide stalwart but sweet support to both Rachel and Logan.

I had fun reading The Wallflower and The Running Back. I felt immersed in university life as if I was a fellow student. I am a long-time fan of the author’s; her understanding of sports, teens, and new adults has always hit home for me. She creates vulnerable yet strong characters that are wholly empathetic, and those characters’ stories bring out my compassionate side. The Wallflower and The Running Back is a “Hail Mary” pass and game-winning touchdown rolled into one spicy-sweet read.

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. For more reading recommendations, visit Book Junkie Reviews at

3.5 ⭐️ Athlete-nerd, outgoing-introvert, she’s his tutor

Rachel is super into academics with high hopes to study abroad and get into a grad program for chemistry. She finds out her bf has been cheating w her best friend who gets the scholarship she’s been working hard for.

Logan is a star football player who is in desperate need of help in his chemistry class. With new changes to make sure athletes don’t get a free pass, he needs a tutor. He knows of Rachel ever since they first bumped into each other freshman year.

The two become student and teacher when Logan requests her as a tutor and she gives in. Rachel is hesitant about the potential Logan has, but soon realizes it when they start talking. During a study session, Logan witnesses an interaction between Rachel and her ex. Rachel explains what happens and the ball that is going to happen. Logan simply falls into the role of making her ex jealous. As they spend more time together studying and hanging out, they both realize they have feelings for each other. Slight flirtations start up here and there and as soon as they start, they escalate. They become more serious and enjoy spending time together outside of their study sessions. Logan introduces Rachel to his family and Rachel to her brother. Even when they hit a few road bumps, they never quit on each other and always talked it out. They overcame the obstacles of where their futures will take them and the seriousness of their relationship. Logan proposes in the cutest way and so understandably them.

- he’s outgoing and she’s introverted
- he’s learned determination and believing in himself
- she’s learned to be in the moment and have fun and most importantly to love the right person
- there was really no major climax or plot twist which kind of made it a straightforward slightly monotone story
- no third act breakup tho!!!
