Even When It Wasn’t You

Rate this book
Macy never expected to find the love of her life in high school—at an 1800s pioneer reenactment camp, no less—but that's precisely where she met Nate. She was private school kid reluctantly attending camp for the first time with her single dad. Nate was from a large, homeschooling family that enjoyed going every year. Their unlikely friendship soon developed into a romantic relationship that had them dreaming of a future together—until Macy unexpectedly called things off in college.

Now twenty-three, Macy is a successful florist with no plans of settling down. When her best friend's wedding festivities mean Nate's return, she's forced to face her past and the feelings she may still have for him. Macy will have to decide if she's willing to risk opening her heart again, or if she will stay on the path she's already chosen where things feel safer.

If you enjoy the wedding backdrop of Forget Me Not by Julie Soto but prefer the funny and wholesome writing style of Sarah Adams, you’ll love Even When It Wasn’t You. Its humor, raw emotion, and swoon-worthy moments will keep you reading long into the night!

This book was………. EVERYTHING ♥️

I’ve just closed this book (or pressed the X on my Kindle) and knew I had to write this review while I was still feeling the raw emotions!
"Even When It Wasn't You” by Kayla Tirrell took me on a rollercoaster! One moment I was eagerly turning the pages, engrossed in this beautifully written story, and the next moment I found myself close to shedding tears as I looked up to find myself at 94%, and the story was coming to an end.

Macy, our leading lady? She completely won me over. Her character is a powerhouse of strength and independence, with vulnerability shining through. Nate? Ahh, he's like a version of a golden retriever. Loyal, affectionate, and with a smile that could warm even the coldest hearts. Their evolution throughout the narrative is beautifully portrayed, showcasing Tirrell's storytelling skills. As for the conclusion, it was a blend of true love and a happily ever after, but I just craved a little more of those raw emotions at the end. Like, a teeny tiny bit longer, you know?

This book? This book is how you nail a second-chance romance tale. Tirrell's writing feels like an embrace that pulls you into the storyline. There are some heavier topics in the book, but they're handled well. Just FYI, check the trigger warnings before you dive in.

Overall, “Even When It Wasn't You" quickly became one of my top 3 reads this year and takes the full 5⭐️. It takes you on a journey of emotions, warms your heart, and is the read you want for days when you want to dive into every feeling. So make yourself a cup of tea and snuggle up with this treasure.

This book was so cute! It had some of my favourite tropes, including second chance and friends to lovers, and they were executed beautifully. It was such a fast and easy read that I didn’t want to put down. The way that the characters met at a pioneer camp made it so fun and unique. However, I did find that the ending felt rushed, especially since it dealt with such a heavy topic. Also, I wish more time had passed between the past and present timelines to give a stronger sense of character growth, especially as Nate somehow managed to finish undergrad and law school in that time. Overall, I definitely recommend this cute read! For those who enjoyed Love & Other Words by Christina Lauren, this one is for you!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kayla Tirrell for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Second chance romance is a trope that I tend to love, so I was very curious to see what Kayla would do with it. Turns out she put it into a romantic dramady that had me laughing and tearing up in equal measure. We get almost a dual timeline story, jumping back and forth to the present reconnection between Macy and Nate and the past when they met and fell in love originally (and the events that split them up). I was surprised to laugh as much as I did; I don't know why I walked in expecting it to be more melancholy, but there were so many quips and awkward moments that had me chuckling. I really enjoy the way Kayla writes a story. I'm excited to check out more from her.

4 stars from me!

*content warnings are outlined in the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book but I'm also going to add mild profanity (not a lot but it's present) and some pretty heavy make-out moments (nothing explicit but if I'm honest they didn't try that hard to not end up kissing lolll)

**I received a copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.**

First, I want to thank Kayla Tirrell for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Kayla Tirrell has written a very unique creative storyline in Even When It Wasn’t You that is written totally outside of the box! It is fast paced that you can devour into one sitting (as I did). Definitely one to put on your tbr list.

Larissa Padilla Designs created a very pretty cover design for Kayla’s book.

Kayla would like to dedicate this book to her husband who is her forever happily ever after.

One thing I am noticing more and more books I read is that authors are including playlists to their books. Kayla includes her list that goes perfectly with the storyline. My favorite is A Thousand Years By Christina Peri. Now I will have that song in my head the rest of the day!

I totally appreciated Kayla being upfront and center about her trigger warnings in the book. The triggers in this book are heavy topics but important ones and she brings awareness to them in the process. I wish more authors were that upfront with their triggers.

Even When It Wasn’t You is Macy and Nate’s story and journey. How and where they met was unlike any situation I had read about prior. Like Macy I am not a fan of historical events or settings. So I was cracking up right along with her at many of the aspects of this one particular event. Who would have thought she would meet a great guy there.

One of the many aspects I loved about this book was Macy’s close knit bond she had with her father. I loved how she felt so open and free to discuss her love life with him.

Kayla takes us back in time to when we first meet Macy and Nate and get to know more about their backstory. Then she fast forwards the storyline to present day.

I loved the serious, real and raw conversations Macy and Nate had with each other about their possible future they had with each other.

Even When It Wasn’t You put a smile on your face and love back into my heart.

Macy was a teenager when she first met Nate. At a Pioneer camp that her dad forced her to go to, he made it bearable. Their friendship quickly blossomed into young love, until Macy went away to college and Nate didn't follow the plans. Unexpected events in Macy's life caused a rift in their relationship.

Fast forward 4 years later, Macy is the maid of honor in her best friend's wedding. Who just so happens to be Nate's sister. Now she has to figure out how to navigate the inevitable, which is trying not to make it awkward when she has to celebrate her best friend's wedding with her ex-boyfriend.

I could not put this book down. It had me on the edge of my seat about what's going to happen next. Will they or won't they? It's a dual timeline between their high school pasts and their wedding festivities of the present. It gave you a good background story that helped understand their relationship more. I loved the friends-to-lovers, second chance, my best friend's brother tropes.

The only thing I didn't like was how long it took to explain why they broke up in the first place. It took about 2/3rds of the book, maybe longer, before you found out what happened. So, you see Macy constantly having doubts, but you're not even sure why.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance trope, with no spice and a happily ever after ending.

Thank you to Kayla Tirrell and Victory Ending Netgalley Co-op for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review ♡

I flew through this book. It's a good pick if you want a quick, easy read.

Tropes included

-Best Friends Brother
-Second Chance romance
-Closed Door
-Pioneer re-enactment camp
-Wedding backdrop
-Childhood friends to lovers

Even when it wasn't you is a heart-warming second chance romance with a strong female friendship at its foundations. This book lacked drama (in a good way) and was very much the story of Macy and Nate.

I am not usually a lover of time jumps/flashbacks between chapters but found I did not mind this so much. Especially towards the end.
The first 90% or so of this book was a strong 4 stars from myself. however towards the end this dropped slightly as I felt the resolution to be rushed and frantic.

As a result of this, I did feel as though some parts of the story were not given enough time or context and as a result the characters felt slightly underdeveloped by the end of the novel. This book had a very YA feel and was easy to read so I can understand that it was a style choice to not delve into the harder-to-read topics and as a result I'm rounding my review up to 4 stars.

Although the author doesn't delve into the harsher parts of Macy and Nate's story please check the CW/TW for this book before reading.

Thankyou to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

(3.5 stars) Many thanks to Kayla for the opportunity to read this very sweet second-chance love story.

Macy and Nate met during their high school days at a pioneer reenactment camp vacation. They were two very different people. Macy was a city girl who was privileged and an only child, while Nate came from a big family, was homeschooled, and lived in a rural area where they grew their own vegetables. They started as friends, but their relationship soon turned into a love story. As they transitioned from a high school romance to a college love story, they planned their future together. Everything seemed perfect until Macy broke up with Nate and cut all ties.

Years later, Nate and Macy were reunited for the first time as members of Nate's sister's wedding party. They were forced to confront the truth behind what drove them apart and their unresolved feelings for each other. The story is told in a dual timeline that bounces between the present day and the beginning of their relationship. Macy and Nate are adorable characters, and the author does an excellent job of adapting her writing style between the timelines, making it easy to feel the young teens' emotions in the flashbacks and the young adults' feelings in the present day.

Although this is a sweet, closed-door romance, the events at the core of the story are weightier. These events and their discussion in the present both occur off-page. I wish the author had included a bit more of it, but I understand the rationale behind her choice. Overall, this was a very cute and quick read.

3.5 Stars.

💐 The vibes:
- dual timeline
- Best friend’s brother
- Young love
- Second Chance
- a secret

💐 My thoughts:
This is a second chance romance with a dual timeline. The timeline jumps between the time throughout highschool and 4 years post highschool. There’s a looming secret the entire book which made it interesting but also I felt like I wanted more information sooner because I wasn’t sure how to feel about Macy for a lot of the book.

💐 I really loved this book for 85% of it. So let’s first talk about the first 85% that I loved. The flashbacks were so sweet. I loved the feeling of young love between Nate and Macy. Nate is homeschooled and Macy - a public schooler- is instantlyskeptical of Nate because she thinks homeschoolers are super weird and awkward. It was hilarious because I was homeschooled and had wild reactions from public schoolers my entire childhood into teen years and even as an adult. I found this entirely realistic 😂.

💐 I loved seeing Macy as she got to know Nate’s family. And Nate’s parents with their strict rules and boundaries made me grin- I totally related to that also. The aspects of young love were captured in a way that I totally resonated with (met my husband at 14; engaged at 19; married at 20- we wild 😜).

💐 In the current timeline, I loved Nate and Macy’s chemistry and their familiar closeness. The reunited kiss. The tattoo. 👌🏼

💐 As for the last 15% - it was a doozy for me. It’s impossible to fully discuss without spoilers so I’ll include more details at the bottom of the review which will be noted. I’ll keep it vague here. The secret. The way Macy handled part of it. The lack of communication. The way Nate initially reacted. I really struggled to make sense of any of it. I tried so hard to put myself back in the mental age of 19- and can recognize there can be a lack of maturity that can come from a relationship so young- because I’ve been 19 and in love. So yes- sometimes you just make terrible judgment calls- especially when there are other factors coming into play such as trauma. This is the way I can understand the train wreck of Nate and Macy.

💐 overall, I really enjoyed this read for most of the book and did enjoy the writing style. I would definitely read another book by this author. I think the conflict and resolution of this one just didn’t land quite right for me personally because of my own history of trauma.

Check TW for this one if you have concerns.

Release date: April 23, 2024.

Thank you so much to Kayla Tirrell and NetGalley for the gifted copy.

‼️ Further explanation of rating- this will contain spoilers. Do not read if you do not want to read spoilers. TW for my thoughts ‼️

🚨 Spoilers and TW - main discussion of miscarriage, ectopic rupture, surgery, etc which I personally experienced … side discussion on assault trauma which I have not experienced. 🚨

I have thoughts on the medical emergency that happened in this book. I’m not a doctor, but I had the same exact medical situation happen to me (ruptured ectopic/removal of fallopian tube) and some of what was portrayed didn’t feel accurate. I feel like it’s relevant because it was the entire purpose of the plot and the conflict and because the information didn’t feel accurate, I just wanted it to make more sense for me. Every experience is different so I’m going to go ahead and assume it could medically make sense and move to the next point.

Aside from the medical aspects of the book that I struggled with, I also felt like the fact that Macy was drugged and raped was completed overshadowed and skipped over entirely. The assault wasn’t unpacked, and I think we really needed to see that. I felt terribly for Macy. And when Macy finally tells Nate about this- he says he needs time to process it. His initial reaction really bothered me. Macy being a victim of assault AND a medical trauma and NATE has to process?? I mean I understand but it also made me angry with him😭🙈

Okay, I really LOVED Macy and Nate. They were super sweet and several times while I was reading this book, I texted my best friend saying how much I loved it all - it felt like me in a book! I was so excited to see musical references and just... reactions that felt genuine. It was a really fun read for me.

I will say that the ending felt a little bit rushed for me. While I know this was a second chance romance, it still felt a bit too fast. I got to about 80% in the book and wondered how it would be wrapped up so quickly. Otherwise, I think the story in present day and flashbacks was helpful. It was amazing to watch Macy and Nate's relationship grow in the flashbacks. It definitely took me back to my high school crush days!

I think this is truly a really sweet book - full of swoon-worthy moments you don't always find in a closed-door romance. It was special and lovely and I'm thrilled I got to read it. Thank you, NetGally and Kayla Tirrell! Looking forward to reading more of your books, Kayla!

Note: Review the trigger warnings at the start of the book and make sure you're in a good space if it's something that bothers you.

I truly adored this book. It is the sweetest second chance romance revolving around a break up over an extremely heartbreaking realization. Definitely check trigger warnings before diving in 🫶🏼

I really loved the plot line of this story. Making it dual timeline was such a great touch. I would have loved to see Nate’s POV sprinkled out throughout the book, but it didn’t bother me that it wasn’t there.

& we love a best friend’s brother romance when the best friend is cheering it on. I also loved that Nate and Macy met first. I adored her as a FMC because she was strong, brave and just absolutely relatable.

I was laughing out loud when she got under the table at the beginning. 🥄 IYKYK.

The epilogue was such a sweet touch to finish off their story! I will absolutely be picking up more by this author!

ARC Review
“People grow so much in their twenties that our teenage relationships shouldn’t still have such a chokehold on me. Some people wouldn’t think twice about the guys they dated when they were in high school and early college. But Nate isn’t just some guy. He was the love of my life.”

Sometimes you’re lucky enough to experience soul deep love as a teenager. Nate and Macy find just that in each other as teens oddly enough at River Rendezvous, a LARP (live action role playing) weeklong event that Macy’s dad thinks will be a fun vacation for them to really bond. She spent that week and the following year with the “socially awkward” homeschooled Delaney Clan. She left with Evie, the sister and best friend she always wanted, and the love of her life, Nate, and a lifetime of memories.

“Seeing him now is like meeting for the first time all over again, but so much worse. The first time we met, it was as awkward as this. The difference was, back then, there was so much possibility. Now, I’m just faced with the memories of him. Memories without a future.”

Present day he’s no longer hers. All she has is memories, a broken heart and secret she can never tell Nate Delaney. Macy’s managed to avoid Nate for the four years since she broke up with him. But, now Evie, his sister, is getting married and they are being thrown together for wedding festivities. Funny, awkward and emotional moments have both crossing paths over and over again. Both are secretly still in love with each other, and closure is nowhere in sight.

Even When It Wasn’t You is a closed door second-chance romance. It sucked me in right from the first chapter. I literally couldn’t put it down and read it in a day. I loved bouncing back and forth from the past to the present. You were able to see the growth of Nate and Macy’s (swoon-worthy) love for each other and how they matured from teens into adults. I just wished we had been able to know what caused the breakup much sooner. We heard a lot from Macy about how they could never work, but it took a while to find out the actual reason. I really wanted to enjoy more of their reunion.

A special thank you NetGalley and Kayla Tirrell for giving me an ARC in exchange for a review.

This was such a sweet closed door second chance romance. I really loved that there was a large homeschooling family! And it included one of my favorite micro tropes, IYKYK. I enjoyed the dual timelines and the slow reveal of why they broke up in the past. Nate and Macy were both such sweethearts and I was rooting for them the whole time.

Wow! I’ve missed reading Kayla Tirrell’s books! This one is so sweet, and at times, heart wrenching, but so worth it.

I am a sucker for any type of romance books, but it’s admittedly been a while since I’ve read clean romance. I was slightly apprehensive about reading a clean romance since I’ve recently been reading a string of dark romance, but I’m so glad I did.

Macy and Nate’s story is told in dual timelines which the author seamlessly intertwined with each other, relating the past to the present. Her use of quirky lines and modern day references makes you feel like you’re listening to your best friend’s story.

I devoured this book and am so thankful I had the chance to read it!

✨ARC Review - 5 ⭐️.5🌶️✨📚

This is my first book by Kayla Tirrell and let me just say it did not disappoint. I was hooked from the very beginning; the story follows Macy and Nate who met during their sophomore year of high school and Nate being homeschooled. They had a beautiful friendship which turned to a beautiful love. They go through difficult situations that caused them to break up, but years later the spark and love is still there. But can they work through the problems of the past and get their happily ever after? You will definitely need to pick this book up to find out, their story was so beautifully written.

Lastly. I’d like to thank NetGalley , Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and Author Kayla Tirrell for the opportunity for this ARC.

Even When It Wasn't You is a delightful story about second chances and not letting your past get in the way of your happiness. Macy's dad drags her to an 1800s pioneer reenactment and she's dreading ever minute of spending time with a bunch of weird homeschool kids. Nate over hears Macy talking about homeschool kids and decides to mess with her. The two end up forming a bond for the week but then go their separate ways. Then Macy's dad drags her back to camp the following year and things change between them and they take chance on their feelings. In the present Macy is older and wants nothing to do with love. She's given up on any chance of romance till Nate comes back for his sisters wedding and forces her to open up. This story is told from dual storylines of past and present which I loved. I loved reading both stories together and getting to know theses characters.

Cute book!
Second chance at love
Kindle- I enjoyed this. It was slow at first but then picked up pretty quickly. It probably would’ve taken me a day to finish this. But honestly I can see why Macy broke up with Nate but it also wasn’t fair to Nate who was in the dark. But I’m glad they had their happy ending. 🥹

I was one of the lucky ones who won this giveaway. Thank you for allowing me to be a winner. 💗

Thank you Kayla, Victory Editing, and NetGalley for the ARC!

Possible T/W: Implied SA, drugging, loss of pregnancy. It’s never explicitly said, just implied and there are no details.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Private school girl Macy meets homeschooled boy Nate at a pioneer LARP camp and they hit it off. Macy doesn’t think they will ever see each other again until her dad drags her back the very next year. A romance sparks between Macy and Nate, and Macy and Nate’s sister Evie become best friends. After a traumatic experience, Macy breaks up with Nate and they don’t meet again until 4 years later at Evie’s wedding that they’re both in.

I don’t like spoilers so I will just leave it at that, but this was such a good little read! I loved the characters, I loved the tropes (friends to lovers, meet cute, second chance romance) and I loved the plot. Kayla’s writing was beautiful, and she had a great way of making us understand the characters and what they were feeling, especially Macy as it was her POV. So good, I definitely recommend especially if you are looking for a semi-quick read!

Am I the only one who thinks that Evie is not a good friend or sister here?

Anyway, this is a second chance romance between two teen lovers. They met cutely during a reenactment camp and things flew off oh so sweetly between them. But then, college came and some very traumatic stuff happened and they broke up. Four years later, our 23-yo protag, Macy, reconnected again with her ex-boyfriend, Nate, during her best friend and his sister's wedding, Evie.

It's a quite quick story in my opinion, told in dual timeline from our FML's perspective. So, you'd really hanging onto the edge of the seat, waiting for the big reveal for their breakup.

It is, without the hard topic, a very sweet story. I love how their past relationship worked. I love our male lead in this one. Despite being so young, he was already so freaking solid in what he wanted in his life. I love his reassurance and his support for our girl. Heck, he's kinda perfect in my book except during the one big moment where he let me down HARD. I didn't like his reaction when he found out the truth. He disappointed me so bad.

Which brought me to the big question. Evie is not a good friend. She knew what happened to our girl and yet afterwards, when things were almost made up, inserted doubt into our girl's head. That's a shitty friend move. Wedding brain aside, that was just not cool.

All in all, it was a sweet second chance story. Room for improvement, I want it to be smutty hehe. Other than that, it was above than fine.

ARC Review

I love this story so much!!! One of my favorite reads of the year even though we aren’t even half way through lol

I highlighted almost every chapter and some in its entirety 😅

I felt like I was looking into an intimates moment in someone’s life and watching Macy navigate all the up’s and downs. From secondhand embarrassment on Macy’s homeschooling comment … to confessions around a campfire 🫠To knowing you’ve met your person but losing them in an awful, gut wrenching way, then reuniting but knowing that you can only love him from a distance.

Nate, has been added to my ultimate book boyfriend’s list! His love, attention, compassion and thoughtfulness towards Macy was everything!

Gahhh…. My heart! I will be rereading this gem again! I already pre-ordered the paper back and the ebook 😅

I don’t usually like when books or shows going back and forth from the past and present but Kayla wrote this so well that I didn’t mind and I looked forward to it!

✨Make sure to read the content warnings for any potential triggers✨

🎶 Don’t forget to check out the playlist!

This is a sweet read that does show real life challenges and problems but it has a happy ending!! I can’t wait for you all to fall in love with this story too!

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for this ARC copy! These thoughts are completely my own.

#Review: *Even when it wasn't you* - ARC - Kayla Tirrell
4.9/5✨

This book was really sweet and emotional. I enjoyed my first encounter with this author 💙. Thank you Kayla Tirrell and NetGalley for this copy.🫶🏼

Macy is a teenager who mingled into the wrong crowd. So, his father decided to bring her to a campsite to take her away from that environment. Here she meets the Delaney family, which includes her soon to be love of her life, Nathan. She becomes best friends with his sister too, Evie.

This story has two timelines: one from the present and one from the past, from their beginning of their friendship. I was super curious about what happened in the past to lead to the present situation. I supposed something similar but not exactly what it actually happened. It was really emotional and affected Macy then and is still affecting her in the present.

The present has the main focus on the preparations for Evies wedding. Also, we have the awkward reunion between Macy and Nate, after a couple of years apart. They will learn new things about eachother and will find out why everything happened that way.

I loved this book. It was nice to see the whole picture behind the character's past and to understand their decisions. I really loved how sweet was Macy and Nate's relationship from the past. It was genuine and innocent.
I recommend this book if you like these tropes:

Short, sweet, and with a lot of feels. If there is something I'm going to remember from this book, it is how much it made me feel, so you go, Ms. Kayla!

Macy and Nate have not seen each other for years since Macy broke up with Nate freshman year of collage. Now, he is back in town for his sister wedding (who is also Macy's best friend), and there is nowhere to hide (even though our heroine literally tries, let me tell you). Nate is hotter, more successful, and just as caring as the last time she saw him, and Macy doesn't know how to resist him.

Macy and Nate met in a pioneer reenactment camp when they were in sophomore year of high school, which I thought was so original!! We get flashbacks to the first few times the meet and also later into their relationship until they break up. It was really sweet to see them crush on each other and just be generally awkward teenagers in love.

We don't know why they broke up until later in the book, and the suspense is there. I did figure out a big part of it because there are a few clues in the book.

I do have to mention that there isn't much spice in the book, which I am always in favor of. Even though it is new adult, I think it very much had a young adult feel. However, I didn't miss the sexy scenes too much because the few kisses we got were HOT. Also, this is a short book, so I think it would have taken away from the story.

I really think this is a book worth picking up!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the advanced copy of this book.
My favorite romance novels are second change romance and childhood romance. This one hit both these check marks. I finished this book in a day. The author draws you into the story immediately, and you fall in love with the main characters.
This is a dual timeline alternating between past and present. It is the story of Nate and Macy who become childhood friends one summer. In more ways than one, they are opposites. Macy is an only child, Nate comes from a large family. Macy comes from a wealthy family and goes to private school, while Nate grows up on a ranch and is home schooled.
Macy has trust issues throughout the book. She grew up in a single parent household after her mother left to chase her dreams. Her fear of becoming her mother and ruining her relationships becomes the barrier to her own happiness. Nate has unwavering love and patience for Macy, and he is truly what makes their relationship swoon worthy. He devotion to her is so steadfast. Even the secrets she carries can't crack the foundation of his love for her.
While this book wasn't the most original (it could easily be compared to 'Every Summer After' and 'Love and Other Words'), I found it to be a compelling and really enjoyable read. I thoroughly enjoyed the authors writing style and look forward to reading more from her.

Oh my goodness, what an absolutely beautiful love story this was! Macy and Nate met when they were teenagers at a pioneer reenactment camp and instantly connected--- despite her inadvertent insult upon their first meeting. In the present day, we know that they are no longer together and that it ended badly... and that they're seeing each other again for the first time for her best friend/his sister's wedding. The story goes back and forth between the current timeline and their history. I loved getting to see how they love story started in their past--- it really was just the sweetest. It also kept me wondering what on earth could have happened to break them apart. We don't find out the details until later in the story- though I'd come to the correct assumption much earlier. This part of their story was absolutely heartbreaking, but I thought it was handled well. It dealt with some very heavy issues, but all happen off page and while it's an important part in their story, it's not heavily discussed. Overall, while there were definitely some moments that were hard to read, I really enjoyed this story. It was the first I had read from this author, but it won't be the last.

Even When It Wasn't You is a closed-door romance with kisses only. There is a slight bit of innuendo and some minor language throughout as well. See the author's note before the story for trigger warnings.

**I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley for consideration. All opinions are my own.

Nate & Macy’s story had me hooked from the very first chapter. I couldn’t put it down, and their story will stick with me for a long time. All. The. Stars.

Stars: 5/5
Spice: 0/5 (Closed-Door)

Florist Macy is preparing to help with her best friend’s wedding when she unexpectedly runs into Nate, her first love and her best friend’s brother. She hasn’t seen him in four years, and he’s here days early – how can she avoid him for the whole week? As they continue to run into each other around town and at pre-wedding functions, we get glimpses into their past and how things went wrong all those years ago.

This story was emotional and gripping from start to finish. There were funny, lighthearted moments, but there were also devastatingly heartbreaking moments. And I could not put it down. Both their pain and their chemistry radiated off the page. Laughs were had and tears were shed, and I wish I could read it for the first time again. I particularly loved the way Kayla moved back and forth between the timeline of their past relationship and the timeline of meeting each other again in the present. This is the first book I’ve read by Kayla, and it surely won’t be the last. I highly recommend it!

TW: SA (past, off-page), pregnancy loss, parental abandonment

I received an ARC copy of the book and all thoughts are my own.

ARC Review:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Macey thought she found her happily ever after in Nate. But when life threw a curveball, she decides their relationship has to come to an end. Enduring four years of heartache hasn’t been easy, but now that Nate is set to return home for his sister’s wedding, avoidance is no longer an option. Will the two be able to coexist, or will their interactions bring about more sorrow.

This is a:
*best friend’s brother
*opposites attract
*he falls first
*second chance
* sweet romance
*featuring dual timelines.

I recently had the privilege of reading, Their Second Chance at Love, by Kayla Tirrell. After falling in love with her writing, I couldn’t wait to start this one. I devoured this book in less than two days, even though I had a packed schedule.

Tirrell has written the sweetest love story in Macey and Nate. While their journey is full of ups and downs, Nate was one of the most understanding and endearing male love interests I have ever read. If you are looking for a clean romance that will make you believe in love, be sure to check this book out when it releases April 23rd!

Special thanks to Netgalley, Victoria Editing, and Kayla Tirrell for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

Overall Rating - 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Spice Level - Clean

“Even When It Wasn’t You” By Kayla Tirrell is a charming friends to lovers, second chance romance that will have you smiling until your cheeks hurt with how absolutely adorable it is! This was my first Kayla Tirrell novel and I’m happy to say I will definitely be reading more of her work!

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Macy and Nate, while I wasn’t a big fan of Macy’s personality at first, as the book went on I really grew to understand her and why she did the things she did and eventually grew to love her. Nate is the definition of Golden Retriever MMC and for all the best reasons.

We all need a Nate in our lives!

The dual timeline is a unique and fun aspect and I loved the way it could leave you with a little cliffhanger to keep you reading, and I definitely did because I blew through this book in two days.

If you love a clean romance that still makes your heart explode with happiness and maybe makes you shed a few tears this book is absolutely for you! (Be warned it will make you crave blueberry hand pies)

This book does deal with a few sensitive topics so make sure you check the content warnings before reading!! Thankyou so much to NetGalley for the ARC!
