Warsaw, 1941 - After a near-fatal accident, Oberleutnant Will Engel is transferred to Warsaw, not to fight, but to manage the Wehrmacht's office supply department. Forced to play the part of a dutiful servant of the Reich, Will's life might be bearable if only he could find a woman to love. With his romantic choices limited to Nazi devotees, his dream seems hopeless, leaving him nothing to look forward to except the delicacies from the German gourmet grocery and the solace he finds in drink.
Before the German invasion of Poland, Maritza Laska's biggest worry was her father's disapproval of her provincial fiancé Andrush Vorobiev. Three years later, the war has left the young Polish Jewess alone, heartbroken and down to her last few zloty.
On his weekly visit to the Polish market, Will notices a stunning young woman searching for her misplaced coins. He offers to pay for her purchase, but Maritza doesn't trust anyone these days—especially a German officer. Despite the initial rejection, Will won't give up that easily. Maritza knows a relationship is forbidden, but she can't resist the handsome officer. If discovered, they risk losing their lives. Will's fortuitous transfer affords the couple an opportunity to escape the grim realities of Warsaw, but as the Allies close in, he hatches a daring plan to protect Maritza and their chance of a future together.
I absolutely loved this book. I couldn't put it down. A new refreshing stance from a very different perspective. I really hope to see more from this author! I highly recommend 🙂
