I thought I’d be helping people, but instead I’m stuck teaching them to be just like the rest of us. Uninspired and undervalued.
When Madison shows up in the front row, I’m captivated by her refreshing spirit. I can’t take my eyes off her, even though I should. Madison is off limits, but she is perfect.
Madison
The one person I could always rely on has left. My sister fell in love and moved across the country and I feel more alone than ever.
Oliver makes me feel seen, but I know he is holding back. I can’t blame him. I shouldn’t blame him. Our love is against the rules.
-- Because of Us is a steamy forbidden romance about finding love in all the wrong places, but falling for it anyway. A standalone story, it is the prequel novella to Bookstagrammer Devon May’s Because of Love series.
When she was 10, Santa brought Devon a “how to write a book” journal. Publishing her debut novel more than 20 years later, she’s glad it finally got put to use.
Devon May resides in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and the two tiny humans who call her mum. When she isn’t breaking up fights, she enjoys books that either break her heart, or turn her on. She carries her emotional support Kindle everywhere, drinks far too much coffee and will never be caught without a hair tie on her wrist.
Did I enjoy myself? Absolutely. Was it a literary masterpiece? Not exactly.
An insta-love professor/student novella doesn’t exactly scream NOBEL PRIZE, but I still found myself wishing it had been a full-length novel instead of a quick, condensed read.
I wanted more from the characters!!! More depth, more groveling, more connection. But then again, I knew what I was signing up for when I saw the size of the book.
Ultimately, I enjoyed the story and the spice, but it left me wanting more. NEEDING more.
This book has an interesting premise and the spice was really well-written. For a novella, I understand that there had to be an insta-love situation, but I couldn’t fully buy into it and whilst I do enjoy age-gaps from time to time, my only concern is that I don’t know how young Madison is. If she is freshly 18, then I am a bit concerned about the power dynamics between a professor and young student. Besides all this, I did find this novel enjoyable to get through and did read this quite quickly because of the pace.
A super quick easy read. This is a forbidden romance with the teacher/student trope. It felt super insta lovey which you’d expect in a novella but I found it hard to see any chemistry between the two main characters. It felt a little bit cringy to me at times but otherwise it was still a good read.
This was such a quick but lovely little read that I thoroughly enjoyed! I always adore taboo novels with a happy ending and this teacher/student one definitely didn’t disappoint.
When the only person Madison can rely on is about to leave, she finds herself all alone. Everyone always leaves. She has no one but herself to rely on.. that’s until .. Oliver has it all, he’s an awarded Author, he just won the lottery, and he’s the new professor at University. And in the University Library.. they were destined to meet.. or rather Collide!

A Novella that’s beautifully written, I love the author’s style of writing and here are my thoughts;
[which might contain spoilers]
• Fast-paced, easy to read and digest. • as much as I appreciate mentioning the trigger warnings, it kinda spoiled the book for me a bit •As it’s a novella, everything is rushed and insta-lovey, I also felt like there were important moments and parts missing from the story so I can’t really rate it higher than 3 ⭐️ •Oliver is a bit annoying at the beginning •There are a couple of SMUT scenes but nothing too smutty to handle
I follow Devon May on IG and have enjoyed everything I’ve seen so far, so when I came across a post saying she had a novella AND it was free, I jumped on it. It didn’t disappoint!
I appreciated the author’s note in the beginning and found that because of it, I was able to settle into the story easily even with those subtle differences.
This story was intriguing, who doesn’t enjoy a little forbidden romance?? I didn’t know exactly what to expect, and I can say the spice was pretty great! I enjoyed the dual POV of Oliver and Madison throughout the story. The story was full of angst, lust, spice, reality, and love. The pacing was pretty good for a novella too.
I also succumbed to the sneak peek of Because of Her and can say I’ll probably be reading that too!
I understand being a novella that the story had to progress a bit quicker than normal but it progressed very fast and I felt like the MFC attached herself to the first thing that paid her attention because the whole story she was very much “I’m alone everyone leaves me etc”
It was really well written and the spice was fantastic it just didn’t scream give me more.
This was such a beautiful little story. I just wish there was more ! Sometimes love is instant, and you do just know so early on!
I know being a novella the love had to be instant and quick but I longed for more of them ! What did they do that week that made them fall in love so easy?
Side note: loved the mention of the migraine and how debilitating they are as someone who has suffered previously and has watched my mum have them it was good to see it described so accurately !

This was a really fast paced easy read, which is always great for a novella. Not gonna lie I’m a sucker for the student/teacher trope so I ate it up. I think this was a great introduction for this series and I can’t wait to read more.
A light, fun and spicy novella! Easy to love characters, it had me hooked from the start! Can't wait to read Devon's first full length novel this year!
This novella is FREE and available NOW! And is a perfect introduction into the world Devon is writing about.
This is an age gap, professor / student, "summer fling" turned into a forbidden relationship.
Madison is alone. When her sister decides to move across the world from her to follow her current boyfriend, she is left lonely & looking for comfort she usually got from her sister. She wasn't expecting to find it in an older stranger that makes her feels things beyond comfortable friendship. He makes her feel like she is the only girl in the world for him, and she can't get enough. Till she realises he is a her new professor.
You will devour it in a couple of hours and it will leave you wanting & needing more of Devon's world...
After getting through a particularly grueling semester, packed with back-to-back exams, group projects that tested my patience, and more caffeine than any one person should consume, I felt like I had earned a reward. Something indulgent, something dramatic, and definitely something steamy. That’s when I finally picked up Because of Us, a novella I’d been eyeing for a while. And let me just say, it delivered all the drama and heat I was craving.
The story follows Madison, an ambitious 18-year-old who dreams of becoming a bestselling author. Determined to chase that dream, she enrolls in a Creative Writing course at her college. But things take a wildly unexpected turn when she walks into class and discovers that her new professor is none other than Oliver, the same man she had a passionate, week-long fling with just days earlier.
Yes, that happened.
Oliver isn’t just teaching her course. He’s also assigned to be her academic adviser. What started as a whirlwind affair suddenly becomes a full-blown forbidden romance filled with secrets, blurred boundaries, and unresolved tension. It’s the kind of plot you’d expect from a binge-worthy drama series, and I was immediately hooked.
One thing I really appreciated was the dual POV. Seeing both Madison’s and Oliver’s thoughts added so much depth to the story. Madison’s chapters captured her determination and youthful intensity, while Oliver’s perspective showed his inner conflict as he struggled between his feelings and his professional obligations. Their chemistry was undeniable, but the emotional turmoil made the story even more compelling.
However, I have to be honest. Something about their relationship dynamic made me a little uncomfortable. While the story doesn’t explicitly mention Madison’s exact age, it’s clear from the context that she’s quite young and just starting out in college. That, combined with Oliver being her professor and academic adviser, made the romance feel a bit off to me. It’s not just the forbidden aspect that made me pause, but the maturity gap and the imbalance in power and life experience. Madison is still figuring out who she is, and diving into such an intense and secretive relationship felt like too much, too soon. I couldn’t fully root for them because it felt like she was stepping into something far more complicated than she was ready for.
I understand that forbidden romance often explores morally complex territory. The story definitely accomplished what it set out to do. If you’re into taboo plotlines with lots of heat and emotional intensity, this one will absolutely grab your attention. Just be prepared for some uncomfortable power dynamics.
In the end, Because of Us was a fast, addictive read that gave me exactly the break I needed after a stressful academic season. While I enjoyed the pacing and dual perspectives, I think I’ll be reaching for something a little less controversial for my next steamy escape.
I really enjoyed this short, quick but very steamy forbidden romance novella. I finished it in one day! It was so beautifully written. I read this one after reading “Because of her” it was a great little insight of Cassidy’s sister Madison where you will be taken on a ride full of jammed packed emotions where you will fall in love with all the characters like I sure did.
What to expect ❤️Forbidden romance ❤️Love at first sight ❤️He falls first

This was such a sweet novella and an incredible debut from Devon May! I’m so excited to watch her writing journey unfold!
If you’re into spicy romances, then you’re in for an absolute treat with this one. The spice level is honestly a big reason this doesn’t rate higher for me (y’all know this about me by now!) but if you enjoy that, you’ll love this.
Maddison and Oliver are both great characters. Despite this book only being about 100 pages, both characters felt so well-rounded and there was a depth to them that I honestly would have loved to see explored further.
The professor/student dynamic is always gonna be a thing for me. I am who I am and I said what I said. I LOVED this dynamic, though I do wish Maddison’s age was made a little clearer, as I’m uncomfortable with the idea of an 18 year old entering this dynamic.
I’m so excited to read the first full length novel in this series, Because of Her, which is due out in April this year!
I have followed Devon May on Instagram for quite some time, and I have really enjoyed following along with her journey as she becomes an author. Because of Us is a free prequel novella to Devon's up-and-coming debut series, Because of Love. When I saw the notification that she had released it, I knew I had to get on it asap. I mean, forbidden love between a professor and his student? Sign me up! I devoured this book in a single sitting, and I actually thoroughly enjoyed the spice. Her summer fling to forbidden relationships storyline had me hooked from the start and eagerly turning the pages to see what happened next. This is a quick and easy read that will have you begging for more from Devon May. I can't wait to read her debut novel, Because of Her!

“No matter how hard I try not to look at her, it’s like trying not to look at the sun. One glorious week was all we had, but that was all it took for me to fall. Hard. Fast. Desperately.”- Oliver
Review: This was a beautifully written novella by the talented Devon May. The author did a great job of providing both enough plot and enough spice to keep me intrigued.🥵💕
While novellas are in their nature shorter than novels, the author did a fantastic job of creating the relationship between Oliver and Madison which is surprising given my reluctance against ‘love at first sight’ tropes within novellas.😍
I really enjoyed this one and I would recommend this if you love a little risk in your romance stories.😉
Because of Us by Devon May was just what I needed. A quick paced, easy read with the right amount of forbidden love, falling fast, age gap romance that I needed.
The love between Oliver and Madison is just so cute I’m lost with words. Madison is a university scholarship student wanting to be a best selling author. She feels everyone leaves including her mum and sister. In comes Oliver who is this very concept and he’s the professor of Madison’s class. He won 10 million dollars and doesn’t think he deserves it so finds a community centre/charity to donate it all to. They know it’s wrong but how can true love be wrong?! I love their connection and need to be with each other. It’s clearly meant to be.
This series is going to be so much fun and the fact I met the author and have each book signed makes it that much more amazing to read.
Novella Professor/Student Forbidden Romance Age Gap InstaLust/InstaLove
I think of this had been a full length book with the characters and their histories fleshed out more I would have loved this. I don’t mind instalove but I didn’t feel their connection. It felt weird not knowing exactly how old the MCs were, I couldn’t tell what f Madison was match enough to feel left behind and let down by people in her past was actual hurt or youthful exaggeration. Also, this played into how I felt about their conflict, was she too immature to deal with this relationship? It would have been better explored in a longer book. I see potential in the authors writing and look forward to her first full length book.
I really loved the concept of this novella but I really struggle with the Insta Love trope and I think if this was a full length novel and we got more of a back story for each of the characters I would have loved it more. I felt like I couldn't connect to the characters and didn't really understand a lot of their history in such a short timeframe. I loved the library scenes (hello I'm a librarian) and the spice was great. I look forward to reading Because of Her!
If you don't mind insta love and enjoy a short spicy novella then I recommend giving this a go 🫶🏻
okay listen, she was short and fun! I absolutely ate it up and I love a good professor x student but was this the best written book I’ve ever read no. Was I wishing for more absolutely! It had all the major plot points for you to understand what was happening which was lovely but I wish I got more development more context in a sense. But It was a great insta love tho that introduced you to the world of because of love series! And I gotta say I was pretty hooked!
Overall, it was short, straight to the point, and simple! I think it was a great starter novella for this series because I’m very intrigued now!! Can’t wait to read the rest of the books!! 🌼💻💕
Because of Us by Devon May is a 113-page novella that follows two characters whose unexpected connection quickly sparks into something deeper. Despite its short length, the story touches on meaningful themes while keeping the focus on the instant chemistry, emotional pull, and rising tension between the leads.
This was an easy, quick read that I actually enjoyed. It felt light overall, even though it brushed up against some deeper subjects. The story easily could have been expanded into a full novel, but as it stands, it’s an enjoyable, fast-paced insta-romance with a good touch of spice.
Because of Us is a quick and easy novella to read and very enjoyable. I enjoyed the story line and the characters were likeable enough.
I did find Madison to be a bit needy towards the end when she got annoyed with Olivia but if this was a full novel we would probably get to see why she is like this.
The spicy scenes were well written without going over the top but because this is a short novella, I didn’t feel the passion between them built up enough.
All in all this was a fun read and I will definitely be adding the debut novel to my TBR!
I’ve been keen to read a forbidden romance, so I jumped at the chance when the option came to check out Because of Us. This novella was Devon’s debut.
The professor-student romance had some fantastic, spicy moments and sweet ones, too. Devon created interesting characters and excelled at sharing their pain and struggle of wanting someone beyond reason but not being able to be with that person. There is so much emotion in this book. I’m looking forward to her first novel this year.
If you want something short and with insta-love, then this is for you.
