As all you Latin scholars would know, vindicta means revenge, and that’s what this book is about. It’s about broken promises, retaliation, even the need to get what you or your loved ones deserve. Sometimes, such things can be tales told and handed down through the generations. At others, it can be…the truth.

No one is safe when revenge has been pledged. Everyone must watch their back in Vindicta, especially Maxwell Muggs and those he loves.

When I started reading this series, Maxwell Muggs was a tough investigative reporter. Through DNA testing, he found that his father was a true English noble, Lord Muggs. Even though the stories in this series have changed from the nitty gritty life of a news reporter to a castle in England, every plot is a contemporary, believable thriller that has you sitting on the edge of your seat. Snowden has a flair for the unexpected. He makes you love his characters and then makes you hold your breath wondering if they will all be ok.

Vindicta can be read as a stand-alone. However, I really think you’ll enjoy it more if you read the three Maxwell Muggs books in order. Firebug, Anointed, and this one, Vindicta, are all great reads. I think you’ll enjoy the story of how plain old Maxwell Muggs becomes Lord Muggs and rights so many wrongs along the way.

However you choose to read Snowden’s books, I think you’ll be happy with any of them. I’ve read many, and even when his style changes, his excellent skill as a writer never does.

I thought that this was a disappointing read. The first part of the book used frequent extracts from the previous books as flashbacks, and that combined with what seemed to be quite a slow pace, made the story feel quite tedious. Overall, I thought the story quite maudlin.

Snowden offers the final installment in his Maxwell Muggs Trilogy, in which old family secrets spring to the surface, threatening to derail the family’s future. Drawing on his past skills as an
investigative journalist, Lord Maxwell Muggs must outwit his most cunning foe yet: the vengeful Vindicta.

As cryptic clues allude to a long-held grudge, Max fights against an enigmatic illness that threatens to erase his memories. In a race against time, he delves deep into a buried family secret and is faced with an impossible decision. Will his skills and intuition be enough to protect those he holds dear in this exhilarating battle of wits?

Snowden delivers with his leading characters, keeping Ruthie as fierce as ever, making Jeremy and Vien painfully loyal, and fleshing out Muggs’ tortured past and persona in an affecting and believable way. Interwoven throughout Muggs’ ongoing story are chapters focused on Peter’s link to the Scepter International, as well as flashbacks detailing events from earlier books, making it easy for the new reader to jump right into the story.

Vindicta’s enigmatic identity and unpredictable actions add layers of complexity to the narrative, challenging characters to question their values and choices in the face of vengeance personified. The dynamic between Muggs and Vindicta intensifies both the tension and suspense of the story, leaving readers on the edge as they witness their relentless mind games in a high-stakes battle for survival. Throughout it all, the novel examines the moral implications of seeking retribution, the impact of betrayal, ethical dilemmas, and the power of redemption, offering a rich exploration of human nature and relationships. Engaging, unpredictable, thrilling.
