Saving Verakko

Rate this book
When Lily is freed from alien captivity, she refuses to wait for rescue—or recapture. She’ll take her chances in the forest. Navigating the exotic terrain won’t be easy, but it beats the alternative. Then, an enormous alien falls into her camp and makes her question everything. He’s rude, grumpy, and annoyingly sexy. Trusting him would be a mistake. And yet…the idea of leaving him behind hurts way more than it should.

Verakko was supposed to liberate the kidnapped humans, then return home to fulfill his obligations. Getting dropped into the forest at the feet of the most confounding female he’s ever met was not on the agenda. So, he’ll help her, then they’ll go their separate ways. That’s the plan…until he starts to suspect that Lily is his mate.

She doesn’t trust easily. He has secrets and responsibilities he can’t avoid forever. Only one thing is clear. If Lily and Verakko want their happily ever after, they’ll have to fight more than the dangers of the forest to get it.

When I saw the name Verakko, I didn’t quite remember who he was so I had to go back to book 2 to look his name up. (I typed up some notes below so I remembered by the time I start this book later. Those notes are still included after my thoughts now that I've finished it).

EDIT: I have now read the book & this one is my favorite of the series so far! Lily was a strong, pragmatic, smart, and skilled heroine. I loved that she was emotional at times, but also very thoughtful and able to think through stressful situations. I thought she was a very real and cool character. I loved how Verakko was described. He is kinda similar to a snake or chameleon and the author showed this in his interactions, movements, and mannerisms. I was super impressed with the character development in this book. I loved their interactions and that both characters weren't perfect, but figured out how to work well together.

Description of Verrako from book 2 -
The skin near his forehead was a soothing shade of teal, but as it continued down toward his chin and neck, it faded into a vibrant green. His hair was cut short on either side and left long on top, allowing his pointed, pierced ears to be prominently displayed. Streaks of sea-green, aqua, and gray ran through his thick charcoal hair and matched the color of his heavy brows.

He is also described as deadly looking the way a snake is and was the one to let all of the women out of the cells during the rescue mission. When fighting with the evil scientist people in book 2, he was lifted up, flown & dropped elsewhere because his kind are apparently super difficult to fight / kill.

This was everything I hate in one book! Needless angst and drama that’s brought about by a lack of communication, made infinitely worse by going over the same pointless drama over and over and fucking over again!

It was okay, but Lily was kinda exhausting and annoying. I understand her situation but OMG was she making him suffer. I didnt see the big problem.

Where the first book was awesome, the following storylines started to get more boring. This will be my last book from this author.

Trek through an alien forest.

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💚🖤💙💜❤️
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌏
Character development: 😠😘🤓😉🥰

The heroine: Lily - Abducted from her backyard by aliens in the night. She and other human women were treated like lab rats at a bunker in a mountain on an alien planet. One of the women, Alice had come up with a plan and freed them. Though a new alien that seemed to help then escape then ran away with Alice, Lily and Alex decided to brave the forest rather than wait around to see what would happen next. Lily has the skills to survive in the wild so she thought that was a better plan.

The Hero: Verakko - He is a Clecanian, though he is of a race that can use their mind to “Sway” other beings called Swadaith. He also has fangs that can release poison into those he bites. He is working with the Queen, Luka and Alice to help liberate the other human females being held in secret facilities. When they are attacked he is taken by one of the Strigy that attacked them and flown towards their base. He is unable to sway the Strigy so he bites him and falls into the forest injured and unconscious.

The Story: Lily had a very unconventional childhood with her family, living off the land in the jungle. So she knew it wouldn’t be fun but also knew she could survive in the alien forest. However, when she and Alice feel the ground beneath them give way and are swept into the river, they are separated. She is surviving alone for more than a week, though she thinks some intelligent creatures may be stalking her, when Verakko is dropped near her.

The book is told in multiple points of view via solo narration. Stephen Dexter does the narration and he is very good at portraying emotion through his voice and has a very pleasing tone and tempo. I dislike solo narration, but I also like this series so it is worth it. I love the way each book in this series that I have read so far has a totally different storyline and setting though they all take place on the same planet.

The story was interesting and I liked the fact that Lily was strong and ingenious. She was also able to detect when Verakko tried to sway her and able to fight it off. They felt attracted to each other, but he is from a matriarchal race where his mother is to pick his mate and his mother has already chosen a female for him, so unless Lily is his fated mate and he gets mating marks, there is no way for them to be together, and he has not recognized Lily as his mate.

⭐️ This one is my absolute favorites so far in the series! I love Lily and Verakko!!!!

Summary:

When Lily is suddenly freed from an alien prison/lab, she refuses to wait for rescuers in case they are just as bad as her last captors. Along with another human named Alex, Lily takes her chances in the alien forest. Luckily, she grew up with survivalist parents, but navigating the exotic terrain isn't easy. Things become even more challenging when Lily and Alex get separated and a wounded alien falls from the sky into her camp. He's rude, grumpy, and sexy as hell. But can she trust him?

Verakko was supposed to liberate the kidnapped humans, then return home to fulfill his obligations. But instead, he gets wounded during the attack and ends up in the middle of the forest face to face with the most intriguing female he's ever met. He decides to help her find her friend and then they'll go their separate ways. But his plan changes when he begins to suspect that Lily is his mate.

Lily doesn't trust easily. Verakko has secrets that threaten to ruin their relationship before it even begins. If these two want their happily ever after, they'll have to fight more than the dangers in the forest to get it.

My Thoughts:

I am obsessed. Seriously, adore this story! Amazing banter, lost in the wilderness trope, and top-notch alien spice.

Lily is a badass and so hilarious! Verakko is a big ball of love. Together they are formidable and sparks fly! The pacing of this story was perfect. I also love how these two grow as individuals and as a couple.

I’m obsessed and can’t wait to start the next book in the series, Tempting Auzed!!!!!

*I've read the series once and listened to the audiobook 3 times now and LOVE it! Stephen Dexter is an amazing narrator!

“You helped me survive out in the forest when I knew so little. Let me help you survive here.”

i liked the first section of this book a lot when the characters had to survive out in the woods. forbidden romance is one of my fav tropes, so that part of their dynamic had the best tension too. Lily wasn’t no damsel in distress which i appreciated and Verakko was the perfect amount of broody. the last 30% is where it started to fall apart though. Lily’s need to be independent and Verakko’s failure to be fully truthful led to a lot of miscommunication. i don’t think Lily was considerate of the consequences that asking certain things of Verakko would cause. she became stubborn in a way that annoyed me and it was more frustrating after Verakko apologized multiple times and still did everything she asked of him. despite this last bit, i did enjoy the book overall— especially Verakko and the different planet and culture we were introduced to here.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this, but they’re starting to feel pretty repetitive. All three MMC’s have had basically the exact same personality and the hesitations the females have about entering into a mated relationship are only mildly different. Honestly, their concerns make a lot of sense, but it doesn’t change the fact that I’m starting to feel like I’m reading the same book over and over. I can think of a lot of interesting directions the author could take this series and I’m hopeful she’ll change it up a bit in the next book. Even with all of these issues, I still devoured this and will undoubtedly read the entire series. I don’t know what kind of crack she’s putting in these, but I’m clearly an addict.

I've never thought I was going to hate a book in this series, but here we are. 🤦‍♀️

I have to say, the chemistry between Lily and Verakko is off the charts! Out of all three books, I think this couple has the most intense tension. As a reader, I can really feel it jumping right off the pages. I suppose it's likely because these two have spent the most time together, so you could really see the buildup, making their connection feel more genuine.

But then it had to be ruined by the fact that he's engaged to someone else and about to get married in just a few weeks. Knowing he was betrothed was already infuriating, but his choice to keep it hidden until the 61% mark was absolutely unacceptable.

He had countless chances to come clean about this marriage contract, yet the self-centered jerk repeatedly chose to keep it from Lily. He's constantly battling with himself over whether to be honest with her or not until his mating marks show, and he always ends up choosing the latter EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!

His dumb excuse:
“I felt that you could be mine when I first laid eyes on you. But I didn’t recognize you right away. I kept putting off telling you about Ziritha because I wanted to recognize you so badly, and I worried you’d treat me differently if you knew. It was selfish, but…I didn’t know what else to do. I thought maybe if I explained my situation, that perhaps we could be together after our marriages were through. But now that I’ve recognized you, you won’t be forced to be with anyone else.”

He's going to bring Lily to his place/town without her having a clue that she would be pushed into marrying a complete stranger when they got there. In their world, marriages barely last more than a few months, at best three. His ridiculous plan was for both of them to marry OP and then, when their marriages ended, they could be together again. What a smart idea, not.

But of course, the mating marks eventually appeared, proving Verakko's justification for deceiving her about having a fiancée. I was absolutely furious and uncomfortable when they finally slept together because poor Lily had no idea that the person/alien she had ever trusted the most in her entire life was nothing but a lying, self-centered douche.

Obviously, her reaction was completely justified when faced with such a shocking revelation. Then the liar brought Lily to the house he bought for his fiancée—a house that, mind you, was decorated by that very fiancée (and she's so freaking sweet and nice). Around this point, I was absolutely fed up and wanted to hurl my Kindle across the room. I can't believe the nerve of this idiot.

And Lily, it seems, has absolutely no chance when it comes to the pull because they're mates. She attempted to hold on to her anger, even though she understood some of his reasons. But honestly, the mate bond pull is incredibly strong, and it would cause him significant pain, both physically and mentally, if they even attempt to resist it. In the end, she finally accepted the undeniable reality that they are destined for each other and will be stuck together for the rest of their lives. She said she loves him and cannot imagine life without him. I can't stand that she's practically pushed into forgiving his lies just because of their connection.

Anyway, the last 20% attempted to fix the disaster of the first 80%, but I’m done caring about how this'll turn out. There's no groveling; she forgave him the very same day she discovered his lie, and after that, I completely mentally checked out. I’m over it, and I just want to get this book done.

I’m a simple girl. All I want is the love interests together, on-page. All. the. time.

A man and woman wear a joined shirt, which says
Is this too much to ask for?

So you give me a book with over 200 pages of uninterrupted forced proximity? I'm in LOVE. And I’m hard-pressed to give a flying Strigi about anything else. Did they act a bit too proud? Did they bicker too much? Sometimes. Who cares? They were together, dammit!

Yeah they eventually return to civilization, but overall they were on-page together the vast majority of the story. Especially after the previous book, this was bliss.

Just missed 5⭐ for me. There wasn't But overall, I was a happy camper.

Well, this is the end of this series for me. I adored book 1, really didn’t like book 2, and pretty much hated every second of this book. The vibes were completely off, and this couple had absolutely no chemistry. There was so much unneeded drama and miscommunication and I really did not enjoy a second of this. So sad because book 1 is just fantastic. The world building, the romance, the characters!!! Everything is so good in that book, and a really hopeful start to this series. But these last 2 books have been bad and I can’t do it anymore.

General Review for the Series:
While each book in the series tells a different story, they all follow the same core formula: an Earth girl gets kidnapped and ends up mated to an alien who also happens to be her fated soulmate. Some books I enjoyed more than others, depending on the tropes involved, but overall I liked the writing style. If you're looking for a fun, cute alien romance series, this one might be exactly what you're after.

I'm really enjoying the world-building with this series. So far none of the books have topped Choosing Theo but honestly I apparently just simp for heroes with low self-esteem, so...

I did love Verakko as a hero and the way his matriarchal culture works. It was pretty fascinating. Plus, the *sway* aka. persuasion thing he can do was pretty fun and would definitely come in handy during sex. Would have loved even more of that.

**2.8/5 stars**

The story follows Lily, a young woman who has been abducted by aliens just like the other women in this series. The plot picks up after Alice, heroine from Freeing Luka, helps the group of woman to escape the testing facility. After seeing Alice get taken away by a strong scary male (Luka), Lily decides to take her chances in the forest rather than staying out in the open to be taken away once more. She leaves the other women with Alejandra and putting the survival skills she learned from her parents, they survive in the wild for weeks...Until an accident happens and they get separated. On her way to get back to her friend, she meets a handsome alien named Verakko, in the most unbelievable circumstances. He is resolute to help her in the search of her friend, but can Lily trust him?

This was poorly summarized by me but I tried my best. The plot is getting thicker and I don't really want to spoil anything important in the open. Anyway, you get the gist of it. This book had its ups and downs. I didn't dislike it but I did feel frustrated at times. It could've been so good but I had an issue with the main characters. Let me start with Lily:

Right from the start, Lily appeared to me as an independent and resourceful young woman. Growing up with parents whom preferred the wild to the city, she learned many survival skills and could easily take care of herself should she ever end up being stranded. I really did admire those qualities at first because it showed how competent and adaptable she could be. The main reason why I grew to dislike her overall is mostly because of how stubborn she was on many aspects. She didn't have the open-mind I thought she would have. She was stuck with what she knew on Earth and never really let herself open up to new societal standards or culture. She was offended all the time, argued all the time, jumped the gun all the time and misinterpreted things...you guessed it! ALL.THE.DAMN.TIME. And it truly got redundant to me half-way through. Her stubbornness caused unnecessary drama and angst and as much as I understand she might've felt lost on a strange planet, I thought she would eventually adapt, as it seemed to be her best quality at first. And at this point, I don't care if it's unrealistic to have a character be so willing to open up easily to the situation they are put into, but it's definitely more pleasant to follow a character who eventually adapts and embraces said new situation.

“I won’t be trapped.”-Lily (This simple quote caused so much angst and I hate it)

Now for Verakko. I saw in the reviews that people were mad that he omitted the truth to Lily a few times. Before even meeting Lily, he'd signed a contract to be bethroted to a female that his mother chose, as per the standards of their society. (More on his fiancée in the list of safeties below, but let me reassure you here, she's very nice) When Verakko met Lily, he felt that strange attraction that he suspected was a matebond. Although he had that impression, the marks on his wrists were not visible and his eyes hadn't changed colors, which meant, he was still uncertain that he recognized Lily as his mate. And he still had to be married to his fiancée per contract. Also, he couldn't ignore Lily who seemed so closed to the Clecanian culture, and who wanted her independence at all cost, Verakko was left with barely any reasonable options. Honestly, I'm not even too mad about the things he'd omitted because he was literally in a chokehold with the laws of his city, his contract and Lily's unwillingness to 'be trapped'. Anyways, overall, as a character, he was playful and protective while also a little bit grumpy.

“You don’t hear me complaining every time the scent of arousal floods your cunt.”-Verakko

The banter between Verakko and Lily at the beginning was very promising. We had this independent and efficient woman who wanted to do and could do things on her own, while a protective male wanted to be useful to her and provide something, anything. But, that banter that I enjoyed at first quickly morphed into something more similar to arguments than anything else. It was repetitive, and the back and forth wasn't pleasant or fun. It was always the same conversation, the same cultural differences clashing. I just wanted their love to eventually bloom somewhere and it took so long for Lily to open up her heart and finally accept Verakko. Although I understand what the author was trying to do, Lily didn't need to be so stubborn this long. The smut on the other hand was very hot, it's just unfortunate there weren't many scenes (I wonder why).

I'm honestly a little disappointed by this book. Every little problem or misunderstanding seemed to put some distance between the two characters who were apparently fated mates. I wish everything had gone more smoothly between them. Of course, a little bit of drama here and there is fine, but a whole book of that is just exhausting and not super enjoyable. It's not how I expected the story to go at all.

As for my highlights of this book, I'm not sure I will post them. I grew so frustrated near the end that I started insulting Lily in my notes. Yet, I still don't consider her as an heroine I would hate but gosh I wished to slap some sense into her a few times.

I know it seems like I hated this book but I actually want to give it at least three stars. I know it doesn't make any sense but the writing was good and I liked the survival situation as well as the forced proximity. It was a nice change of pace from the last two books that were mostly set in the comfort of the City of Tremanta with low chances of real danger. The action here and there was nice. Surprisingly though, I enjoyed Freeing Luka more than this one but overall, I would say they were equally frustrating at times. But they also had their good moments. And even with those 'bad' moments, I'm still in love with this series. I think it's the whole world-building that really hooked me. Even if Tremanta has a bit of a far-fetched culture, society and concept, I find that it's the type of story I feel like reading right now. Where the hero becomes absolutely besotted with the heroine, possessive and protective, while the heroine is not falling for the hero right away; making him chase her and work for her. Totally my type. I'm a simple woman.

The next book is Alejandra's book and from what I've seen of her so far, I think I will like her. As for the hero, Auzed, I must say he's quite a mystery to me. He didn't show much of his personality when he appeared in the previous books and I'm really curious to get to know him and how he'll get with Alejandra.

I like that with this book we are taken to a different area of the planet and meet a different group of people. I'm not sure what I think of Lily and Alex running off into the jungle at the start. Part of me thinks it was a good idea, they didn't know what was going to happen and they had lived through being kidnapped. But another part of me is like...why...you are on a different planet and you know nothing of their land, plants or animals.

Lily did a good job of keeping them safe and alive, until things were taken out of her control. It was nice that when things went to hell for Lily that Verakko showed up. Sure at first he wasn't a lot of help, but at least he was someone to talk to. Verakko did drive me nuts though, because while he filled Lily in on some of the things in his culture he didn't explain it all and often the way he phrased things sounded bad because Lily was thinking of how she was used to things on Earth and things are so different on this planet. I think had Verakko explained more about his situation he could have saved himself a lot of grief and been with Lily faster, living their lives happy.

Not my favourite from the series.

I did get bored with this one. I stopped reading at around 45% and didn’t finish it until months later.

That being said, it wasn’t bad, on the contrary, once I picked it up again it was smooth sailing. I guess it was just slow and the “conflict” wasn’t very interesting.

I also am definitely NOT a fan of books which take place outdoors, like trekking through the dessert or forests or anything like that. I’m bored by the details of how they find places to bathe and hunt for fruits and animals, and make toothbrushes out of sticks, the list goes on. It bores me to tears, I’d probably die if I were stuck in that situation cause I’m useless at that kind of stuff and have absolutely zero interest in reading about it and a good 70% of this book was just that.

I listened to this on audible and not even that could make me like these characters. Lily was an annoying, selfish lil shit and Verakko was an arrogant liar but at least he had good reasons to behave the way he did.
