Rate this book
Packed with intrigue, high-stakes schemes, and adrenalin-fueled action on-and-off the track, the brilliant and gripping inside story of Formula One’s most fascinating, swagger-rich, and win-at-all-costs team, Red Bull, now celebrating its twentieth anniversary.

A propulsive, dramatic thrill ride, Growing Wings chronicles two incredible decades of racing as it tells the story of one of F1’s boldest teams, the legendary Red Bull, from its earliest drivers to pioneering seasons for Coulthard, Webber and Vettel, among others in F1’s heralded cast.

With exclusive access to Red Bull’s inner sanctum, leading F1 journalist and author Ben Hunt probes the operations of a world-leading Formula One team, from the personalities, rivalries, turbulence, and controversies to the game-changing tech, leadership strategies, and mindset of the racing drivers themselves.

With Red Bull’s cooperation, yet maintaining journalistic independence, Ben Hunt delivers a thrilling, frank, and unvarnished account of how the paddock's loudest upstarts achieved team alchemy with the promotion of a driver called Max Verstappen, and what it means to go, learn, go again, tweak, test, and ultimately dominate in a way never before seen in elite auto racing.

Dietrich Mateschitz ojciec RB, geniusz i wizjoner, który zamiast marzyć działał, podejmując ryzyko, myślał nieszablonowo i dążył do celu pomimo przeciwności.

Pretty technical. Enjoyed learning about the creation of RBR and how they have climbed the grid.

A fascinating history of the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team. We start from their beginnings in 2004 and travel year-by-year through to the amazing 2023 season. A must-read for those who have been captured by the excitement of Netflix's "Drive to Survive" or those interested in the world of Formula 1 racing.

What started off as a really interesting book about the beginnings and developments of red bull turned into a wikipedia page. All the way until 2019 it contained a lot of interviews, facts, statements and a lot of interesting trivia. However, it seems that since Drive to survive launched, the book fell into simply telling us DTS stories and lots of info that could be as well found on wikipedia. Not to mention the very end with mentioning the Horned rumours while the topic was still hot, turning it into a gossip afterword. A bit disappointing, but still a nice read about the first and 2nd era of Red Bull.

Not really much of an inside story but a simplistic recounting. Shies away from any flashpoints and done with rose tinted glasses and big involvement from Red Bull. So nothing of huge interest in here.

Did not finish) moesten bekopen.

The quality of the book is okay. It gets the job done, which is to give me an overview of Red Bull Racing's 20-year history with important events highlighted. Having been a late and casual fan of Formula One, the anecdotes are important for me to catch up and follow the references people throw around on forums, YouTube comments, and occasionally, quipped during live broadcasts.

What struck me the most was how Red Bull changed the culture after they bought out the Jaguar team while still having the same facility and work force. Red Bull lamented that the Jaguar team was not made up of winners but guys who were comfortable of ranking seventh in a Grand Prix, did their jobs, got paid, and went home. Red Bull wanted winners and winners did NOT settle for P7; winner did NOT just "do his job"; and winner did not punch the card out at 5 PM. Winners pushed for that extra mile which was the only thing that would ultimately make a difference. The team culture changed from the team principle to the engineers. Only the winners remained, the rest cut out. If you want your team to win, be it a racing team, a football team, or a software engineer team, you have to instill the winner mentality in everyone.

Being a winner is hard (otherwise everyone would be a one), because it requires extra effort, burning that extra oil and being ruthless. Winners may not be liked, as their relentless pursuit of winning is easily mistaken as the villain in a story. But if you want to win, you have to accept the price and double down. In my opinion, Mark Webber failed to achieve his goal because he was just that little bit short of completely embracing the winner mentality -- he allowed himself to be involved in two biking accidents. A truly dedicated winner would not let that happen; he would avoid any risk that would potentially jeopardize his chance of winning, knowing fully well that he was not as talented as his teammate.

However, here is the big big caveat: being a winner is NOT always a good or healthy thing. Winning always comes with costs. Winning at one thing almost always means losing at something else. Are all the costs justified for the win? Is winning that important that you are willing to sacrifice other things in life, such as friendship, family, health, which some will argue are much more important than winning? I can think of two names on top of my head that perfectly represent such consideration: Nico Rosberg winning F1 in 2016 and Eddie Hall winning WSM in 2017. They proved what they wanted to prove, yet the price to pay was not worth it for them. So they quit, on top of their games, graciously. I have my utmost respect for them.

I think the advice is not that we should strive to be a winner in everything in our lives. Instead, it is to take a good look at our lives and understand what we really want. There is nothing wrong with wanting to lead an uneventful and regular life. There is nothing wrong with being disenchanted with a world going crazy and deciding to laying flat (躺平). But, if there is a goal you really want to achieve, you'd better bring the winner mentality and go full throttle on it.

You are not a loser if you consciously decide not to try; nor are you a loser if you pour your heart out yet still fall short. But you are a loser if you make an effort to go for something, yet give up half way because of reasons totally within your control, and then complain about how you COULD HAVE made it.

Man, I sound like a devil's advocate, don't I?

I read the book and as I was reading was thinking of business lessons learned from the book. The book is an interesting read and I'm not a follower of Formula One or F1 as it is mostly called now.

Some business lessons I gleaned from this book:

1) Build a great team with the goal of winning and move out those that don't share this vision if they don't leave on their own
2) Hire the best people and pay them well
3) Always keep your eye on the competition
4) Manage the budget because if you don't you could be penalized or in the real world go bankrupt
5) It pays to be a winner both in take home pay and other rewards and benefits that come with winning and I have adapted this phrase from the many SEAL books I have read
6) Always have a back-up plan or a Plan B as evidenced by the Renault engine reliability issues
7) Always be innovating
8) Practice teamwork and communication like Verstappen and Perez and unlike Vettel and Webber
9) Know your supply chain and have as much control over it as possible
10) Realize there will be set backs and failure along the way and how you react to them and your attitude moving forward will define your success or lack thereof

I recommend this book.

The first chapters diving into RB’s history were very exciting. As a newer F1 fan, it was very cool to learn the history of the team, the critical characters, and the plot lines that would develop into the future.

That said, the final chapters felt much more like brief summaries of an entire racing season boiled down to 10ish pages of content. This does not take away from the enjoyment I felt reading them, but they were more of a written depiction of the season from RB’s perspective than a deep dive into how the teams greatness and dominance was sustained.

Great read overall! Very exciting race depictions, apt historical accounts of relationships and deals, and a nice compliment to the D2S series for anyone just getting into the sport and trying to figure out who the main characters are!

The story of Red Bull Racing's journey in Formula One, from start up to becoming one of the most dominant constructors on the grid. The book is largely in chronological order. Each year of the team's existence gets a chapter(s). For the very dedicated F1 fan who follows the sport intensely, there won't be a lot of details that are new or shocking. While Ben does an exceptional job of compiling everything in one place, the deep dives into the behind the scenes controversies aren't as "unvarnished" as I would have liked.

Nonetheless, I think this is a read for both the hard core fans and casual fans of F1. A handy recap of the team history.

Ben may want to reconsider re-releasing the book with a new chapter on Christian Horner getting the sack.

As someone who grew up supporting Redbull since 2009 when I would watch F1 with my dad, this book was a great read on how the team got their start in F1 and the progress they made. Although a lot of the book is a retelling of the events throughout their 20 years it’s fascinating to learn more about the up and downs that they experienced in this time. Throughout this book you do get some further insights from Horner years after some of the events which was interesting to see if his opinions remain the same or if they have changed and why. Overall an enjoyable read.

If your an F1 & Red Bull fan, this book is for you.

I've been a huge fan since I can remember because of my dad and I love that I got to read the history from the time before I was born or way too young to understand.

This covers how RedBull Racing came into the sport and the behind the scenes appointment of Christian Horner. You get to see the difficulties they suffered with the driver rivallaries which lead to the team either replacing drivers or drivers leaving for rival teams such as Riccardo going to Renault.

Would highly recommend it.

Great insight to Red Bull Racing and also the Red Bull brand. They were never seen as a serious threat to the well establish racing teams when they came on the scene. But after a rocky start they proved everyone wrong and the rest is history! Ben writes in an easy to read style and also provided great background on some of the key figures and key events in this still brief history of Red Bull racing. I look forward to a second installment from him, maybe 5 years time?

This was fine, basically what I expected. Some interesting stories from before I was watching F1, but overall, pretty shallow and overly kind to Horner, who gave the author the access he needed to write this book. Very little analysis, too many quotes from earlier articles and interviews.
