I used to read Pondus when the strip was fairly new, and liked it for being so different from most of the oh so humdrum comic strips that permetes this genre/format of comics art. But somewhere along the way I lost track, and interest and have just recently come back, realizing that far from stagnating, Pondus has evolved and is a much more mature comic nowadays. That's not to say that it has stopped being laugh out loud funny, just that Øverli has allowed for more somber themes among the over the top humor and mayhem of weirdly ugly women and sex crazed midgets.

This volume, which I got from the Danish publisher, contains strips that are far newer than the latest ones we've got in Sweden in book format, and it quickly becomes obvious that a lot has happened to the characters. Jocke/Jokke/Palle (depending on what language you're reading the comic in), the seemingly eternal loser friend of the main character Pondus, has not only gotten a girlfriend but has even had a son. That's changing the concept drastically just there, but during this volume Øverli has him being dumped by the girlfriend for another man, moving out and handling the life of a single father. For a comic that started out as a sometimes provocative but still rather straight humor strip about football, that's some change, and a change for the better.

Oh, and the reunion scene in the end of the book (Spoiler Alert, no wait, too late...) is a moment worthy the end of a major graphic novel. Who said you can't have long, engaging story lines in the comic strip format!
