The Zone is a fantastic book. Together with Chopra’s, it has been one of the texts which I fin relevant in order to understand who we are, and how we understand the importance of the revolutionary act of eating Good Food. It’s easy to put on weight when you get older. I am going into 68 and I need to see which are possible solutions to some of my key problems.
A couple of weeks ago, I was (I still am!) very concerned about my Heart Disease. I started to read Chopra’s book “Sanar el Corazón” (Heal your Heart). On page 156 I read about the problem that I might be carrying some overweight. Chopra recommended the reader to consult Barry Sears’ book : The Zone, which I did immediately.
After reading the first basic chapters, I jumped into chapter 8 (calculating your safe diet) in order to get the correct amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fat. Based on my weight and my “geometry” I calculated that my excess fat is 29 pounds and if I wanted to go into The Zone I should start to eat daily 76.46 grams of protein. Then I could calculate carbohydrates and fat that I should eat together. Finally I read the whole text, but I started my own experiment.
Ten days ago I started to do the revolutionary “exercise” of defining how my food will affect me in the coming 5 hour.
I had in mind two objectives: a) decrease my excess weight (then my heart would work in a healthy way, and, b) to see if I can get into the zone
I have lost 6.8 pound and I feel fine. I am keeping a good track of the main variables and I feel confident that I will achieve objective a ; let’s see what happens with b!
The book is fascinating, and it is great that it was written by someone who has faced a heart problem similar to mine, and who understands the difficulties of living with arrhythmias.
Through going into The Zone, we go back to the original diet that we had since the very beginning, and our diet directly falls into the balance that we should keep of protein, carbohydrates and fat in order to generate the positive ecosanoids (it was my first time for read this word !).
We need to understand how the macronutrients that we eat affect good or bad hormonal response. Hormones go in pairs and insulin goes together with glucagon in defining how close you can get into The Zone. Too much insulin or too much glucagon will generate hormonal unbalance.
Though the whole book is great, these were my 10 main observations :
1. The key point is not about calories (though good food will be low calories), but about hormones balance. 2. Eat small dishes, always within less than 5 hours 3. Food balance (protein to carbohydrates = 0.75) in order to get good ecosanoids so we get the right hormones. We diminish insulin and we should try to finish arachinoid acid. 4. Don’t be afraid from fats (though for cardiac problems they might be important). 5. No more coffee 6. Avoid egg yolk and white flour 7. Try to keep the fiber from fruits and vegetables. 8. Together with your GP, keep a good control about the relation that weight-loss could impact some of their effects. 9. Because of your time to sleep (longer that 5 hours) eat a night snack before you retire. 10. Let’s follow The Zone macronutrient programme.
The Standard American Diet isn't working, in fact it's Killing Americans! The Zone is our Road Map to choosing to live better, healthier lives! Dr. Sears lays out the argument clearly as to what's going on and how to shift to feeling better by eating better. Make the choice to get in & stay in The ZONE!
We should all be eating in this manner; Dr. Sears elaborates on the benefits of following a "Zone-favourable" diet and how consuming the correct amount and proportion of macronutrients can do anything from reducing blood pressure to extending your life on earth - even cause you to lose weight!
I bought the Kindle version. There are some pretty glaring typos, but the content is spot on. It can get repetitive after some time, so most of the points can be gleaned pretty early on. It's nice that he addresses specific ailments that can be helped by following his diet and more importantly why it helps those specific issues.
