Reign of the Dead 2 Apocalypse end- Revised Updated and Reloaded
Mankind is an endangered species. The dead walk and the living search for a refuge from the waking nightmare.
Strap on your weapons and reinforce your means of travel. In Reign of the Dead the apocalypse had just begun. Apocalypse End is part two in a four-part story.
The world now belongs to the rotting corpses of a lost civilization. Bearing little resemblance to their lost humanity, they hunt for warm-blooded prey to satisfy an overpowering urge to consume living flesh.
As Jim workman continues his quest for other survivors, he is again confronted with the realization that there is more to fear than death. He encounters a Militia led by a ruthless radical. They are a group of survivalists, prepared for anything and their numbers are great. They are the last vestiges of a corrupt anti-establishment that stands in the way of a new beginning for mankind.
No stone is left unturned and no question is left unanswered in Reign of the Dead: Apocalypse End.
This is a slight improvement over Reign of the Dead, mostly due to editing and for the fact that the human enemies in this book actually are worth mentioning as key roleplayers in the story, as opposed to the pathetic preacher in the first book.
Still tons of plot holes, simplistic dialogue, and more of the "uber" leading man, who reveals he was in the Navy SEALs, no less. I get the feeling the author inserted this tidbit after probably getting some comments that he was just a bit too studly. So he was a Navy SEAL-ahhh, that would explain it all.
There are a TON of coincidences in this book, almost cringeworthy in the extreme. How convenient is it that our main character meets up with the militia on his way to the coast? The timing of them crossing paths is pretty impressive. How convenient that he meets up with another character AT the coast? Once again the timing of it and just missing a helocopter crash is incredible. How amazing is it that our main character is flying over the spot where his girlfriend is fighting off undead? Once again, timing is everything. Finally, how incredibly odd and convenient it is that we discover the brother of one of the minor characters is not only still alive (when approximately 7.3 million people residing in Virginia died during the zombie holocaust) but is also grouped up a with the enemies of our main group-plus he is the spy sent to the island our main character ends up on? And how do they figure out who he is? He has the same last name as this minor character...which is Smith. WOW! Thank God it wasn't a really common last name! Otherwise they might have never...oh, never mind.
I like the idea of the human race struggling to survive against horrendous odds and this tale does display that happening here. I like the conflict between different groups-one of which is power hungry and desires to create a new world order. But the bad guys are caricatures of typical morons. I was honestly surprised the main baddy could even tie his own shoes, let alone lead troops into battle with some of his dimwitted ideas and actions. If it were the real world, he would have accidentally shot himself with his service revolver while cleaning it.
The ending sequence is ok, but I think the final act was done for shock value, as if the author felt he needed something to slap the audience in the face rather than just let the story end in a less reckless fashion. Not that it was implausible...for that I look at the absolutely unnecessary "visions" of two of the female characters and the equally unnecessary dream sequences they have.
So why 3 stars? Because this book was ok for all its flaws (well, as a genre book at least). I do feel the examination of the why? related to the zombies and how they came about was somewhat interesting. Every author and movie maker has carte blanche to do this since Romero basically made it a mystery (for the most part) as to why it happened or could happen. This author tries to make sense of it with a scientist doing research on the problem. The story moves forward and is driven more by a few select characters as opposed to the movement of a larger group from one place to another so you can focus on specific things more so than the first book.
As I said with the first book, the author possibly has potential and might improve with future works. This one is not great, but it is a slight improvement over REIGN. I am a big fan of zombie fiction so I can enjoy something that is not spectacular, but I would not recommend this one for anyone who is not a huge fan of the genre.
This is the second instalment of Len Barnhart’s “Reign of the Dead” series of books. The next book in the series entitled “Reign Of The Dead: Outbreak” is due for release in the Autumn of 2006.
The novel follows on from where the first book finished, continuing with the same group of survivors as once again their lives daggle by a thread. Like in the first book, Len quickly gets straight into the action, delivering plenty more blood soaked pages of zombie mayhem. Len leans more towards the developing characterization of the survivors in this novel, submerging the reader into the mental strain that all of the characters are under. Many arguments take place within the tale, bringing about interesting sub-plots that unfold within the various personalities.
The book builds towards a dramatic ending that will leave you breathless once you’ve finished the book. This is a great sequel to Len’s first novel, and a book I highly recommend to any zombie or horror fan.
The book runs for 270 pages and is only available in a paperback edition to date. Like the first novel it was published through iUniverse Star publications.

Netgalley Review.
Another graphic novel I am jumping in on not at the start.
First Impression: Art is promising. I am a little confused but its not a surprise
Art is haunting and gorgeous. Like Athur Rackum drawing alien creatures. Love that there is a character named Owen- my sons name. Story seems disjointed, like there are missing pages.
Plot/Storyline: A bit confusing but probably because I havent read the first volume. Art/Colors: Beautiful but dark. Very surreal.
All the characters are believable and good, but I just didnt get into them very much. I know I didnt start with the first book but I did the same thing with Gunnerkrigg Court and got hooked from reading the 4th volume 1st. I think other people might like it more than me so I would recommend it. But I do recommend starting with Volume 1.
Well, I will begin by saying I did not enjoy this one nearly as much as the original. Sometimes I wish that authors (much like film-makers) would take more time before doing sequels to good works instead of diving into the sequel as soon as they generate some level of appreciation for their work. I am unsure if this occurred here, but that is the way this book felt to me. Although tere were some decent ideas and concepts to this novel, I would have much preferred to see Barnhart improve with time instead of falling back. For fans of the original Reign of the Dead, you might want to pick this up to complete the author's story of the main characters. I could go either way on recommending it to people so I'll simply leave it at that.
This is a OK zombie book. I understand this is the second in a series, but even if you have not read the first one you can jump into this one with no problems. A group are holed up in a government bunker/building for past two years, but one member believes there must be others out there and he wants to go to where he last heard of a group. Throw in a group of militia racist a***oles, and a safe island and you have a story. One of my biggest pet peeves in this book is you have been in a building for 2 years and you have not searched one of the most important areas because you thought it was just storage?? Once open, you find exactly what you have needed for past two years ago? Otherwise, a mediocre book.
This was much better then the 1st one. Lots of typical zombieish stuff. The author throws around certain words tho for impact but doesn't write well enough IMHO to get away with it. Very stereotypical characters. Not a lot of depth - but this is a zombie romp so one shouldn't expect too much ;) would have liked more background on Jim to make me care a little more about him. Instead he just comes off as the easy hero.
