A solid character driven sci-fi- as someone else said, it definitely has notes of a space opera; these aren't military officials or trained diplomats, it's space uhaul movers with a reporter. The Tereschova is a habitat space craft that was only meant as to be so for a short time, carrying passengers to their new home on a uninhabited planet. I really appreciated this aspect, that living in a space craft is a temporary thing in this; full artificial gravity is difficult, magnet boots are a necessity, and it's cramped on a road trip.
Flynn- the news reporter and "main" character(really, nearly all of the characters are primary, there's little id consider secondary and none that are nonessential) is one of the most interesting aspects of the book. A reporter, someone who is constantly in the line of fire of historic moments, is sorely utilized in the sci-fi genre; and this isn't one of those moments where a concept is interesting but falls flat in execution, it is implemented wonderfully and really added depth to the world for me.
Lastly, the aliens. There not anything too revolutionary, they're all solid species, the most fascinating to me being Asar's- a perplexing bugger, their first and last scenes are both hilariously terrifying and pull a 180 mood shift. The history is set up well, these aliens are the more advanced group, with many species having interstellar alliances, humans having never made first contact. The book also pleasantly surprised me with a plot twist- i thought it was going towards the generic betrayal but this was subverted in a great way.

Overall, 3/5. I liked it, it was a good read with some interesting points that were executed perfectly. There are some things that i didnt find compelling or werent expanded upon. Honestly I wished the xenobiology had more of a focus on it; this may just be my personal interest though, I wouldn't say this takes anything away from the book. The author is working on a sequel, and this book is absolutely the set up of a franchise that pay off. I'll be keeping an eye on this author and reading the sequel when it comes out. Long story short, I'd recommend Far Flung.

T.C.C. Edwards takes us on a wild ride with William Flynn, whose dreams of starting fresh with his fiancé on a new colony go way off course—like, lightyears off course. Instead, he's stranded in some uncharted corner of the universe, trying to survive with the help of an alien named Asar. And let’s just say, things get messy fast with a deadly alien war on the horizon!

The heart of this book is Flynn's uneasy alliance with Asar. Can you imagine putting your life in the hands of a mysterious alien? Yup, that’s exactly what happens. The tension is real as they navigate battles between two powerful alien races, and Flynn has to figure out who he can really trust.

The world-building? Spot on! Edwards paints a vivid picture of alien worlds and the cold, dark expanse of space.

You really feel like you’re right there with Flynn and the crew, fighting to survive in the middle of a war that’s way bigger than them. And the stakes? They couldn’t be higher. One wrong move and it’s game over.

Flynn’s character arc is super relatable. His journey from hopeful colonist to battle-worn survivor is intense and emotional, and it keeps you rooting for him the whole way through. Plus, the side characters—especially Asar—add that extra layer of mystery and intrigue.

Far Flung is a well-crafted sci-fi story with rich, unique characters and lovely world-building. As far as sci-fi stories go, I feel this one leans more toward space opera than hard sci-fi, though there are some elements of the genre here. Let's call it a blending.

Far Flung is perfect for people who enjoy shows like Lost In Space or Star Trek. It's got a lot of warmth and may be considered cozy sci-fi to some readers. Fans of the strict rigidness of hard sci-fi might not appreciate it as much. It's very much a character-driven story.

A fun (and incredibly dangerous) romp through space.
