Dukes Most Wanted #3

Forever Her Rake

Rate this book
After spending all her life pinned beneath her overbearing mother’s thumb, Lady Edith Smythe is desperately weary of being a respectable, dutiful daughter. What better time to finally cast aside her wallflower ways than at a country house party where women’s suffrage is the leading topic of the day? And there’s no better man to exercise her freedom with than a diabolically handsome rake who’s as sinful as he is irresistible.

Valentine Blakemoor, self-made property magnate and one of the wealthiest men in England, has been lured to the wilds of Yorkshire by the promise of vengeance. Seducing the bookish, bespectacled Lady Edith proves an embarrassingly easy feat. But once he has her in his bed, Val is bemused to discover Lady Edith is far more than the quiet, freckled spinster he believed. To his shock, he can’t seem to get enough of her, which decidedly wasn’t part of his plan.

For the first time in his storied career as a jaded rake, Val wants more than mere pleasure. In fact, he wants everything Lady Edith has to offer. But she’s firm on her insistence that one night and her innocence are all she’s willing to give. And when she discovers his true motives for pursuing her, nothing between them will ever be the same…

Heat level: Scorching! Don't say you weren't warned.

➕ What I liked :

Interesting side characters.

The heroine was a little bit “older”. (28)

Curvy/full-figured heroine. 👍

Bespectacled heroine.

The hero is not a nobleman/aristocrat.

OK plot.

Somewhat interesting main characters.

Mostly set in a country setting.

Better character description/visual appearance of the heroine in this book.

OK steam.

➖ What I disliked:

A little too much telling and not enough showing.

The hero was a little too arrogant and full of himself.

Some parts are a little too rushed even for a shorter story.

Both main characters needed a little more depth/character development.

Repetitive.
(Especially the word handsome… but also other things/words.)

The plot is somewhat OK but on the thin side (even for a novella) and needed more depth.

The romantic build up/romance was rushed.

A little too formulaic in some places in the story.

A little too anachronistic in some places in the story.

Formulaic in the character description/visual appearance/character choice of the hero.
(So far in this series the heroes are rather similar in looks/ appearance …. Tall or very tall, muscular, handsome or very handsome… what little dissimilarity/differences there are is that they have different eye colors and hair colors not much more…. Some more variation/diversity would be very welcome.)

The heroines awful and toxic mother and that the heroine hardly stands up to her for herself or for her friends etc.
(The heroines mother is a very judgemental and snobbish woman that also enjoys spreading vicious gossip and rumors about everyone… and she does not support the suffrage movement or believe what it stands for...she also is very manipulative and patronizing towards her daughter among many other things.)

The heroes revenge quest/plan and who he targeted for it did not really make sense and was unrealistic/unbelievable.
(The heroine was not close to her brother and had very little contact with him… but also the heroine was not aware what had happened in any way and was totally innocent to any wrongdoing.)

Believability/plausibility issues‎.
(After the heroine gains a little bit of backbone and stands up for herself a tiny bit… both to her mother and the hero… the reader is told that the heroine does not like how her mother behaves towards others ...including her friends and herself…. Why would the heroine have anything to do with her mother after she was married and did not have to spend time with her??
Also the things with the heroes sister and that she was too proud etc. to ask for or want help from the man that loved her and wanted to marry her and help take care of their unborn child...she would rather have a rather precarious living situation as a mistress?)

The aftermath after the hero reveals the truth about why he sought her out and about the reasons/reason behind his revenge quest/plan was clunky and weird… Yes she avoids him and yes she was hurt by what he did… but the reader does not really get any sense of those feelings from the heroine? And the hero does not do any real groveling... they just avoid each other until they both decide that they are going to go see the heroines brother and find out what really happened (but they do this behind each others backs? ) and then all is fine and OK with everything and everyone?

The heroines contradictory/inconsistent personality.
(She is somewhat adventuresome with the hero… but almost a total doormat with her mother
except on a few minor occasions… but then she more or less goes back to being a doormat with/for her mother and letting her mother more or less bully her.)

That the heroine was insecure about her hair color and freckles and her body shape/size.
She also came across as too much of a pushover and a yes person.

➖ 😒👎 The cover is not representative at all…. The heroine is a curvy/full-figured heroine……. The cover shows a slender woman on the cover…. Not at all like the heroine is described/portrayed in the book.

Oh this was so good the wealthy self made man who falls for the wallflower, when all he wanted was revenge. Of course things don’t go to plan & Edie is far more of a handful, in so many ways, than Val ever expected. I loved both Val & Edie the chemistry was off the scale & the verbal banter delicious – I loved their journey to a HEA & there was a big twist which I didn’t expect. A very well written enthralling romance
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

This author is hit or miss so I went in with low expectations. Some hot make out scenes pretty early on and distributed throughout the book with some dirty talk, so I enjoyed that and it’s the only reason for the 2.5 stars. I can’t recall if there was a mirror involved.

The 3rd act breakup dragged so I was bored reading the last couple of chapters.

This is my 72nd book by Scarlett Scott. She is definitely one of my favorite authors. She is actually one of my top favorites. I have been reading her since 2016. I love her stories and her writing and she writes such damn good, long and yummy, hot sex scenes. I know I will always get a good read from her. Can't wait to read this one.

I loved Edie and Val. I loved their story and their personalities and their chemistry. Sex was super hot. I love when rakes can't believe they fall for a virgin. Edie seemed like such a push over with her mom around but once she said enough is enough, she was so feisty. I just loved it. Just an overall great read. I am definitely adding to my favorite read list for March! Every book in this series has been great.

I liked this one, even tho the hero was a manwhore. Not a surprise, its right there in the title so I walked right into it

Thankfully, while it’s explicitly stated he’s sleazed around with lots of STD-trap skanks, it doesn’t get into explicit details. The focus is more on how he has no conscience, no scruples and is hellbent on using the heroine for revenge.

I love the revenge trope, which is why I read this one. It was good and I liked the twist at the end.

The heroine was a shy, scholarly bookish type—but also a dutiful daughter. Which made her intentions to never marry MAKE NO SENSE. I really hate it when authors don’t think thru their characters psychology. Even if the heroine wasn’t dutiful, if she didn’t marry she would remain a spinster under her overbearing mother’s thumb. You’d think the heroine would’ve been smart enough to figure out that her only way out would be to marry.

But other than that plot hole, if was a good story, lots of steam, lots of feelz

Safe. Hero’s past is mentioned, he was a manwhore but appears to have been celibate since the heroine. (At least no mention is made that he fucked another after meeting heroine). Heroine is a virgin and belongs only to her hero, although mentions she has been kissed badly before. Very minor OM, no OW, no cheating or sharing or abuse between MCs. HEA with epilogue

A Dangerous Game of Revenge and Desire
Forever Her Rake is a tempestuous tale of revenge, desire, and redemption. Val, consumed by grief and anger over his sister's tragic fate at the hands of Edith's brother, sets out on a perilous path to destroy the woman he holds responsible. Edith, however, is no ordinary damsel. Independent and fiercely intelligent, she defies societal expectations. Their clash of wills ignites a combustible attraction that threatens to consume them both.

The novel masterfully explores the complexities of human nature, as the characters grapple with their dark pasts and the allure of forbidden love. Val, a man driven by vengeance, is a compelling anti-hero, while Edith's strength and resilience make her a captivating protagonist. The author’s vivid descriptions and intricate plotting create a rich and immersive world.

Ultimately, Forever Her Rake is a short story about the transformative power of love and forgiveness. As the characters confront their demons, they embark on a journey of self-discovery that leads to unexpected revelations. While the novel's plot is driven by dramatic twists and turns, it also offers a poignant exploration of the human condition.

this was fun in a 'I'm determined to wile away my afternoon and get lost in a book and this helped me do just that'

this also made me realise I might like my 300-page HR more than the novellas that doesn't allow for my character exploration. Oh well, it was fun.

Edie and Val
Wow!! What a great and amazing storyline! As always I lovereading Scarlett Scott’s books!
Not everything is as it seems in this book!

This book is about revenge and Mr. Valentine Blakemoore’s slow seduction of Lady Edith and she is part of his revenge. She is his victim because of what her brother did to his sister.
His slow seduction of her gave me goosebumps! This storyline has
seduction and it’s witty!
Mr. Valentine is a self made millionaire.
Val is a gorgeous rake and scoundrel and made his money on his own.
Unfortunately for Edith her mother Lady Featherstone is the biggest gossip around. And she is very strict and controlling of Edith. And Edith wants to be free from her tight hold.
Everything changes when she meets Mr. Blackmore.
This book is just so good! I absolutely loved this book and it’s a definite must read! ❤️🔥❤️

I was wholly unprepared for the level of angsty longing in this wonderful tale. Scarlett Scott definitely put me through the emotional ringer on this one. It was fun, it was dark, it was angsty and it was glorious. I always enjoy Scott's writing but I can honestly say this was the first absolute shocker! That's all I'll say as I don't want to spoil anything. The characters though were such an emotional upheaval. Only Scott can take a villain and send me into emotional flip-flops. You love him, you hate him but you still love him. I can say with clarity that I completely understood Edie's turmoil. It takes a certain skill to make one truly feel the heartache in someone who acted so callously. My heart hurts as he reaches for her, even as I want to wring his neck for denying what he truly feels and letting her see it. He is truly his own worst enemy because all his heartache is self made. And seeing the juxtaposition of Lady Edith/Edie was a delight. It was clear to see in past stories that this was a dutiful daughter with a world of rebellion buried deep, it was only ever a matter of time. I greatly enjoyed this story and this entire series is so much fun!

Disappointed to say the least

If i could give this less than 1 star I would. I have never wanted a MC to die in a historical romance, but here I am. Honestly, I don't even care which of the two. They both are infuriating. It would be a better story than the Jerry Springer story we got. I loved this series up until this book. I don't even know where to start with my disappointment. Maybe it was the way he told her about his revenge plot, or maybe it was the fact that she was forced to marry this POS man. Nope, it got worse. She allows it to happen even though she is so "smart." then, after all that, she has sex with him multiple times willingly and still loves him. What an absolute load of nonsense. From about page 150, I was ready to hurt her for being so stupid and him for being despicable. There's no redeeming quality here. I only finished the book to learn about the sister, who was happy with being a side chick! So it was all for nothing. You're telling me he wouldn't have already confronted the brother? No one mad over the death of a family member would have let that slide. He would have. Don't bother reading. It's not worth the time.

If I found out I was tricked into marriage only for it to be over revenge that turned out to be unwarranted, I would not instantly forgive my husband because I was desperately in love with him or whatever, I would be even more pissed that he ruined my life AND my reputation for literally no reason. I don't think the male lead apologized for ruining the female lead's life and reputation even once! He called himself a bad person constantly throughout the book, and I can't help but agree.

The idiot didn't even bother to confront the man he thought treated his sister so poorly until AFTER he ruined and forced the man's sister into marriage. It's absolutely wild to me that the male lead, based on the kind of man he had been presented as the whole novel, wouldn't have immediately confronted this man when the incident happened or at least hired a someone to investigate/fact check. His revenge plan was incredibly cruel and unfair for the female lead, who not only did nothing wrong but also wasn't even that close with her brother. If you wanted revenge, go after the man who did you wrong, not his poor sister who had nothing to do with it.

The female lead's revenge, if you could actually call it that, and which she really didn't stick to that long because the male lead apparently had a magical penis, truly paled in comparison to his, probably due to the fact that unlike him, she is actually a good person. I still think she should have done worse to him, though, love or not. He very much deserved worse than blue balls and a few hurt feelings.

Speaking of the female lead, she showed herself to be smart time and time again, as well as a little bit of a thrill seeker when it came to romance, but wow, was her characterization something. For no real reason, she fell in love with a man she had only talked to a few times and had a few sexually intimate moments with. It was never really explained why she fell in love with him, let alone why she fell in love basically instantly. It was explained very well why he loved her, but for the life of me, I can't think of one reason she gave as to why she loved him SO MUCH other than he made her orgasm.

Also, her being willing to overlook the fact that he ruined her life, whether he had a vaild reason to or not, feels unrealistic. It did not matter to her even before she got the facts straight in the end, but in real life, that is the kind of grudge you hold onto for years, if not your whole life.

Male and female lead aside, there were a lot of things I think the book should have gone deeper into, and there was a lot of telling instead of showing which I really don't like in books. I also felt that the ending was rushed and that all conflict was fixed within the span of 5 pages right before the epilogue, which felt sloppy and like an afterthought.

This was an all night binge read. And it was definitely worth missing the sleep over.

What was supposed to be simple revenge seduction to ruin Edie in the public of the Ton turns into more because Val has had Edie once already and he wants her again so he sets out to ruin her so that she's married to him to for the rest of her life and she can never see her brother again.

But not only has he ruined Edie's chance at happiness but his own because she's never going to trust him after the way he betrayed her, used her and broke her heart only to get revenge against her brother.

He never thought he would fell passion let alone love for his enemy's sister however the tide has turned around and now that he thought vengeance would be enough to make him happy and whole instead Edie is the one who makes him feel that way.

This story has so many heartwarming moments and many heartbreaking moments that you can't help but to captivated from the beginning to the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I loved seeing Edie evolve from a shy meek lady to bold brave lady.. And I loved how she was able to capture Val's heart.

I can't wait to read the next one!

I received this story as advanced reader's copy in exchange for a voluntary review and this is purely based up my own personal opinion and that of no one else.

This is such a great series. Another romance within the house party! Edith (Edie) and Val’s story is incredible, taking the reader through the gamete of emotions. Val is not a gentleman, as he reminds Edie over and over, but it’s hard not to fall in love with this “bad” boy. Even as we go through the feelings of love and hate that our heroine suffers at his hands, we still root for his reformation. Unpredictable and sizzling hot, you’ll love this one!

I loved Edie and Val. She was a red haired blue stocking that he couldn’t get enough of. The house party where he was to exact his revenge on her brother was the perfect place to fall in love. Only that wasn’t in either of their plans. Another hot and steaming magnetic couple. Scarlett has woven another love story with five star heat for us to enjoy!

Boo. I didnt care for this one. The story lacked heart and the connection between our hero and heroine lacked connection. Everything seemed so very forced. I just was disappointed with this installment.

I'll still continue the series, as the first two were enjoyable. Hopefully the next one will be better!

Yeah, this is what I like. A deceptively plain compliant but strong, passionate h with the mind of a bluestocking. A ruthless, downright nasty Rake with some real vendetta. There is angst, but not too much. I hate too much angst. But here, it's all justifiable. Yeah, my kinda read! Highly recommend this book. It's on the TRA shelf for sure.

Man, this was easily the worst book in the series thus far (which isn't saying much since it's only book three and I wasn't exactly enthralled with the first one either).

To begin with, we see bits and pieces of Lady Edith in the first two of course, and we learn just how far under her mother's thumb she is. So while it's understandable that she wants a bit of freedom, I wish we would have gotten to see more of her defiance, as well as more pushback from the mother. Sure, she defies her by talking to Val, and the other ladies, but her mother doesn't know that she is being defied. Even when she joined the Woman's Suffrage Society her mother didn't learn about it until later and when she did she didn't push back in the way I would have expected. We are told that she is a blue-stocking, a wallflower and a spinster often on the outskirts of social events (even those that aren't balls), and yet she doesn't question a confirmed rake's sudden interest in her? Not only does she not question it, but she almost immediately allows him to take liberties with her (I believe he gets under her skirts the same day they first speak? If not that night, then the one after. And the day after that to get her to invite him to deflower her). Seriously? Where is the gently-bred spinster we had seen before this?

Then we have Val. Who only seeks out Edith so he can enact revenge upon her brother. And sure, it's fun watching him realize that there is a lot more to Edith than he originally expected and that he actually enjoys her company (although I think more of that is him lusting after her, but that is another staple of this particular author's stories). HOWEVER. You're seriously telling me that knowing what he knows about his sister and Edith's brother, he did not confront the Marquess ONE time to demand the truth? He didn't even consider doing so until after he had forced Edith to marry him?

Of course, once the truth on that matter is revealed it makes everything else that happened between them pointless. Him forcing her to marry him by giving the illusion he had ruined her in front of others, her being mad at him and putting up walls between them, heck even him pursuing her in the first place. Personally, if I was determined to keep that part of the story in, I would have given a reason why the brother couldn't have been confronted (perhaps he was off with his wife and child on the continent? Or at some far-flung country estate). I also would have had Val just woo Edith into marrying him that didn't involve pretending to ruin her the one time he actually hadn't done so (something he should have had no trouble doing had he done a better job at proposing to her in the first place) and then had the truth come out after they had been happily married for a couple of months. Perhaps in the form of gossip? Because let's be real here, no matter how hard someone in the ton tried to conceal an affair, having a mistress, or having a child out of wedlock, someone always ferreted out the truth and spread it around.

One final thing I really wish we had gotten the chance to see is Edith's mother taking luncheon at their house. Considering how deeply she hated Val and the invitation had come from him, I was curious not only if she would have shown up, but how the luncheon would have gone. But alas, the visit to the brother seemed to take its place as that happened on the same day (at roughly the same time) and the mother-in-law was never mentioned again.

I'm still hoping this series will finally blow me away, although that hope is starting to dwindle a bit.

I have so much to say. I can’t even comprehend what I’ve felt throughout this book. It was hot as hell but—- I’m angry, I’m heartbroken, I needed to pause at times and walk it off. But Scarlett, she always seems to kill me 😂

I needed to hop on my treadmill to work out my anger because of how furious I was at both Val and Edie. FURIOUS.

Val, for obvious reasons and Edie because I feel she didn’t punish him enough for what he did to her. That could be a me problem. But I literally yelled “ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!” Multiple times throughout it.

So blah blah blah, Val wanted to get revenge for the death of his sister, so he intends to ruin, Edie, who’s brother involuntarily killed her. While executing his plan, both Val and Edie actually start falling for each other and he knows he’s in trouble. This wasn’t the plan. Book smart Edie has always been under the thumb of her mother. Catering to her every wish and desire for her and never just letting her live. When handsome rake, Valentine Blackmore starts showing his affection for her, she’s confused as she’s always been invisible. When things start getting real and they both show real love to each other, Val drops the bomb on Edie that he was only using her to get to her brother, he blackmails her into marrying him. He really is in love with her, and she really is in love with him— even though he did all this crap to her. When she starts pulling away, Val will do anything to get Edie’s love back.

I don’t know why, but this wasn’t the direction I saw it going in and thats my bad, but I didn’t ultimately LOVE the direction it went it. It was kinda eh.

I understand Val was trying to convince Edie he was a really terrible guy, but he was fucking awful to her. He knew he was getting too soft around her, so he fucked it all to prove a point. Got it, got it. But forcing her to marry him and then being a dick to her, reaaaallllly was icky. Like, to the point where I was like okay, even if he does love her, some of this is just inexcusable.

Her “punishment” to him was essentially ignoring him during the first month of their marriage, and I mean it worked. He wound up coming back to her and all. But, he would use sex as a means to get them together and i don’t know, it was gross. I couldn’t imagine wanting to even touch a man who was that nasty and vindictive to me, but that’s just me.

I get that they were in love, but he needed to fucking grovel— pages on pages of fucking groveling is what he should’ve done. And she should’ve been better at ignoring him. The levels of anger I experienced when she submitted to him when he was trying to get to her into bed made me furious. I couldn’t wrap my head around it.

I don’t know which way I would’ve wanted to go because either way, it wasn’t gonna be a good look for Val. I know that. But I think it was the fact that he wasn’t really at all sorry for what he did to just such a kind, innocent Edie. That really hurt. I didn’t want her to forgive him. And that hurts me and kindve made me sick to my stomach. I really was expecting him to show he was indead a good guy, but I didn’t feel that at all.

Revenge trope gone right! Throw in a little dirty bedroom talk, scattered steamy scenes and a coldhearted rake accidentally falling in love, you have a cute love story!

😈 Valentine, you can take the boy out of the slums, but you can’t take the slums out of the boy! And he had a dirty potty mouth to prove it. 😮‍💨 Val rose from poverty and became an extremely successful, wealthy man. Unfortunately, he now finds himself needing to right a wrong done to him, and he was hell-bent upon revenge to do whatever it takes to get even. Enter unsuspecting Lady Edith.

🧴 Edith, a 28-yr old spinster living under her mother’s tight control, she was charming, kindhearted, obsessed with science, history and the making and wearing of perfumes. After meeting Val at a country house party and enjoying his flirtatious ways, she decided that she’s ready to live life and enjoy what it has to offer. Including Val.

“Val cupped her cheek, tilting her head gently, and held her stare. “How interesting. I’m going to kiss you now.”
“K-kiss me?” Fine, red-gold eyebrows rose high on her forehead.
“Unless you object in the next five seconds,” he added, reasoning that he should, at the very least, try to play this game of his fairly. “Five.” Her stupid bonnet was in the way, so he plucked at the neatly tied bow holding it in place. “Four.” The ribbon came undone, and he pulled the millinery away, tossing it to the ground. “Three.”
“My bonnet,” she protested.
But he was too busy admiring the sunlight glinting in her fiery hair to give a damn. “Two.”
“But the mud,” she added lamely.
“It’s a hideous bonnet, and you deserve something far lovelier,” he told her. “One.”

I loved watching Val accidentally fall in love with Edie. The morning after one particular steamy scene where he had lost control, he needed to chain smoke 4 cigarettes in a row in utter disgust and frustration over the fact that he had found Edie to be adorable. 🥰

Once Edie found out about the revenge plan, feelings were hurt and needed to be fixed. Val just needed to figure out how to give his feelings a name and convey those to her. 😍

“He missed her. Not just her body, but her mind. Her smile. Her ever-changing scents. He missed her sharp wit, her freckles, missed the way she’d looked at him when she had thought him a good man. He wanted her to look at him that way again, damn it, and he never wanted her to stop.”

I’m so glad I gave this author another try! I’ll definitely read more. Thanks Yesmina, for challenging me to read a ‘revenge themed book’. 🎉

Forever Her Rake is the third book in Scarlett Scott’s Dukes Most wanted series. Set amid a house party organised by Vivi, Duchess of Bradford [the lead in the first in series Forever Her Duke] in order to raise support for the Women’s Suffrage Society, book three follows Lady Edith Smythe and Mr Valentine Blakemoor.
At 28, Lady Edith is firmly on the shelf. She has spent her life being a dutiful daughter and making small rebellions where she can. She is tired of being a perfect and respectable daughter living under her overbearing mother’s thumb. This house party is the perfect time to cast aside her wallflower ways and indulge in a little independance. And the sinfully handsome, slightly disreputable Valentine Blakemoor might be the perfect man to help her.
Valentine has accepted the invitation to the house party with his own hidden agenda for revenge. Intending to ruin Lady Edith he finds that she is absolutely ripe for seduction. But the more time he spends with Edith the more Valentine’s ideas for vengeance get muddled. Now nothing but marriage and a lifetime with Edith will do. But when Edith finds out Valentine’s true motives can she ever forgive him?
I loved this story. I just love confident, brooding heroes who get blindsided by their intended targets.
Edith is not the shy, meek wallflower everyone thinks she is. She is incredibly clever and has strong will even whilst conforming to the constraints of her day which I find realistic. I loved that she finally found the ability to stand up to her mother and fight for what she wants to do.
Valentine is a ruthless, self made man who has clawed his way to the top. I loved that his plans go awry pretty much as soon as he meets Edith. He is befuddled by his feelings for her and it is amusing to see him justify and try to make sense of his changed plans for her. We can all see that he has fallen hard.
Valentine and Edith make a really lovely and heartwarming couple and I loved following them to their HEA. The house party setting is great because we get to see glimpses of past characters. Loved the glimpse of Decker and am really hoping we get to see more in the series.
I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Another fantastic book in this series! It’s the third book but it reads well as a standalone, although characters from previous books are in this one and scenes from the previous book overlap in this but as they are now from another point of view, reading previous books is not necessarily but I recommend reading the previous books anyway because they are a great read too. The writing style in this series is full of humour, detail and depth.
This book concentrates on the love story between Edith Smythe and Valentine (Val) Blakemoor. An unlikely pair particularly as Edith’s mother has a distinct dislike for him because he’s not of old money but he is very rich now. He has come from very humble beginnings, growing up in the workhouse with his sister, he worked very hard to become one of the richest men in England.
Edith seems to not want to do anything to upset her mother but she is different from many young women in the ton. Her views on women’s rights, interests in chemistry, making perfumes and her bookish ways added to her red hair and the need of unfashionable glasses to allow her to see makes her feel undesirable to men.
Edith is flattered when the handsome Val pays her attention but Val is not interested in Edith because of her looks or views. He wants to ruin her for all others and disgrace her family all to get revenge against her brother. Unfortunately for him, the longer he spends time with her in his attempt to ruin her, he finds he’s becoming more attracted romantically to her than he thought possible.
This story is such a fun romance story. Edith has such a unique and quirky character which is so enjoyable to read. She is very relatable to people even today. The change in Val’s opinion of Edith throughout the book is delightful. There’s a lot of character growth in the two of them that is really interesting to read. There’s shocking revelations that leave Val wondering if the revenge he was desperate for was actually necessary. There are steamy scenes between Edith and Val that are open door and well written. The plot is interesting and I was invested in Edith and Val’s story from the beginning, right the way to the end. There was a sneak peek at the next book which I can’t wait to read. This series has been a blast to read and I would recommend this book and the series to anyone who wants a great regency read with steamy scenes and always an happily ever after.
I received a special copy from the author. I am voluntarily leaving this review. All views and opinions are my own.

He wanted to lift her skirts and caress her from ankle to thigh. He wanted to bury his face between her legs and lick her until she screamed. He wanted to f*ck her hard and rude and noisily on the ground. To rut like an animal. To debauch her with his body, his desires. To take and take and take until she was breathless and mindless and she could do nothing but turn herself over to the endless pleasure he gave her.

Uhm..I’m feeling a bit parched, anybody got a hose? I’m a tad thirsty up in here. I. Am. Gone ya’ll…straight gone over Valentine Blakemore. This man has erased all others before him (sorry Maximillian). Dude is most definitely NOT the hero of this story, he's all villain and bae-bay…he can ruin me all day ANY day. Forget 50 shades…morally gray is now my favorite color. A master of seduction and mischief, Val, in all his wickedness, has one goal and that’s revenge.

Forever Her Rake sparkles with mischief – its characters so vivid and dynamic they practically leap from the pages, ensnaring you in a web of intrigue so captivating you're drawn into its world. Filled with villainous charm, drama, and a heat that will set your pulse racing, this tale of love and deception is something fierce!

Stuck with an overbearing mother, Lady Edith Smythe is just dying to break free and shed the facade of being the dutiful and respectable daughter. Seizing the moment at a suffrage-themed country house party, she decides to indulge in a brief fling with the sinfully attractive rake, Valentine Blakemoor, a wealthy property tycoon with vengeance in his heart and seduction on his mind. However, seducing Edie quickly turns from a simple conquest to an complicated entanglement for Val, as he finds himself unexpectedly captivated by her depth and spirit, craving more than just quick vengeful shag. But nobody cares what he wants, especially when his real intentions come to light.

This book is a whole mood ya’ll and I’m here for every single bit of it. It has all the feels. You'll laugh...cry, fall in love…the whole gambit. If you haven't already…treat yourself to this wickedly enjoyable read. Scarlett truly delivers in Forever Her Rake!

This novel is the third in the Dukes Most Wanted series. What excited me about this series was the fact that some of it has been a rewrite of a previous series (now defunct) that Scarlett took part in. I also happen to really like the theme of the series which revolves around a country house party. Anyone who has read historical romance knows that house parties are famous for lots of secret assignations!
This novel features the main characters Valentine (Val) and Edith (Edie). In all honesty, I had a really hard time liking Val for most of the novel. His main reason for being at the house party is to get revenge for a wrong he believes his sister has suffered. Edie is there to attend a Lady’s Suffragette get together.
Edie is one of my favorite type of heroines- the wallflower Bluestocking. She’s smart but firmly “on the shelf” at 28 and doesn’t hold much hope of making a match, nor does she really want to. She is accompanied by a domineering mother who only finds fault with Edie. This makes Edie somewhat self conscious and affects her self image.
Things between Val and Edie heat to boiling very quickly. Edie decides that she does not want to remain a virgin forever but expects that her relationship with Val will be for one night only. Val, on the other hand, is using Edie as his instrument of revenge. His plan changes somewhat during their time together but his true motives finally out in a dramatic fashion. What follows that is a struggle to find some way to coexist with each other.
The reason I read HR is because I want that happy ending. This novel brings that resolution but not without a lot of soul searching for both lead characters. It’s not a cut and dried sweet story but then Scarlett is not that type of writer. She loves to bring the conflict, whether self made or through outside forces.
I would recommend this novel if you are already a fan of her writing or if you want lead characters who evolve through a story, if you like explicit open door bedroom scenes, and if you don’t mind a little darkness invading the story.
I was given an ARC to read and review. These thoughts and opinions are my own.

The heroine, Lady Edith Smythe, is a shy and bookish spinster who longs to break free from her domineering mother and experience some excitement in her life. The hero, Valentine Blakemoor, is a self-made millionaire and notorious rake who has a hidden agenda for seducing Lady Edith. Now they both can succeed in their own hidden agenda by attending a country house party - Val finds his seduction of Edie embarrassingly easy; but, unknown to him, Edie's plan was to be a willing participant and experience passion. Their attraction is undeniable, but their relationship is complicated by revenge, secrets, lies, and a scandal.

Scott writes with flair and passion, creating a vivid historical setting and a steamy romance that will keep you hooked until the end. The banter and Val's "dirty talk" was witty, and the final twist in the plot was a surprise. The love scenes are scorching hot and emotional, showing the growth and depth of the couple’s bond. The book also touches on some important social issues of the time, such as women’s rights, class differences, and the power of the press.

𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐚𝐤𝐞 is a delightful and satisfying read that will make you swoon, laugh, and I did get teary eyed in a few places. I highly recommend it to fans of spicy, regency romance; it can be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading the previous books in the series, as they are equally enjoyable and feature some of the same characters. This book is a perfect example of why Scarlett Scott is one of my favorite authors - 𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬! I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

There were some fundamental problems with this story that kept me disconnected.

The first main problem is the lack of any central conflict until way too late in the story. Until about 2/3rds of the way through, the hero and heroine just get along. Nothing is really keeping them apart and the heroine was not expecting anything beyond a fun little affair. The revenge doesn't work as a conflict because she does not know about it for most of the book.

The heroine is also a problem. She lacks a desire or motivation that drives her forward. At the beginning of the book I could not tell you what it was that she wanted in her life. She is a very passive character. The author hinted at the heroine having trust issues, but did nothing with it. I mean a plain spinster with trust issues all of a sudden has a hot rake hitting on her, and she never questions it. Her personality was fairly bland too, so I never cared about her.

The hero had issues too. But at least he had something he was trying to do. Unfortunately, his revenge plan was so stupid that I couldn't take it seriously. Also, the author waited until close to the end of the book before she even revealed why he wanted revenge. So much of the book revolved around this revenge, but not knowing the motivation made me unable to care about it. The reason was super anticlimactic too. And I still couldn't tell you why he wouldn't want to do anything to directly ruin the life of his target. Ruining the life of the sister who the target was not even close to seems like a very weak plan.

In the end, I found the book super boring because there was nothing that I could connect to or that was engaging.
